Peter & The Wolf, Op 67 (27:11)
Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra, Op 34 (17:12)
Review: This recording of the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Sergei Prokofiev's 1936 story and orchestral score Peter and the Wolf was recorded in 1977 and was originally released in 1978. The role of the narrator on the recording was initially offered to both Peter Ustinov and Alec Guinness who both turned it down, before David Bowie agreed to take on the role, supposedly as a Christmas present to his son. On the B-side is another equally as charming piece of recent classical history, Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra as narrated by Hugh Downs.

Review: Tin Machine II is the second and final studio album by Tin Machine. It was rebased in 1991 by Victory Music and marked the last time Bowie fronted and toured with the band. After this he focused on his solo career but the album quietly, in the background, continued to pick up fans, praise and an increasing reputation. It's often cited as one of the best lost albums of the last millennium and is packed with strong tracks that power along on big, angular guitars with Bowie's vocals soaring up top. This is the first time the record has been on vinyl since its initial rase and comes on limited edition coloured wax.

Review: Tin Machine II was first released by Victory Music in 1991. It was the second and last studio long player from Tin Machine and was followed by a tour. Once it was done, the band's legendary frontman David Bowie went back to his solo career and never looked back. Over the years, the album has take on cult status with Uncut magazine once calling it "extraordinary" and placing it in their list of 50 Great Lost Albums. It is a must-have record with plenty of pure-Bowie moments such as 'baby Universal' and singles like 'You Belong In Rock N Roll,' which did well in the charts at the time.

Review: Ska and rocksteady legend Desmond Dekker was originally a welder before he found fame in the music industry. It only came about after his colleagues heard him singing at work and encouraged him to follow his passion. He eventually went on to become an icon of Jamaican music and is also said to have helped launch the career of fellow former welder, Bob Marley. In 1993 he linked up with UK ska heroes The Specials for this spice album on Trojan Records. It features a suite of songs by Dekker's favourites such as Byron Lee, Theophilus Beckford, Jimmy Cliff and Derrick Morgan.

Review: Music on Vinyl serve up a special green vinyl reissue of this legendary The Upsetters album from 1978. All the individual copies are hand numbered and the whole thing was of course produced by the late great Lee 'Scratch' Perry. It was the last record he did in his legendary Black Ark studio before he closed it down (and later burnt it down thinking it was possessed by evil spirts). It is another superb highlight of his skill on the studio mixing desk, with taped out dubs, hissing hi hats and meandering melodies that burrow deep into your brain and body.

Review: Woody Shaw was one of the more influential jazz musicians of his time. This album was recorded in 1985 and finds him in full flow with his Tone Jansa Quartet. The American jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, and band leader very much shows off his improvisational skills on flugelhorn and trumpet while his sidemen Renato Chico on piano, Peter Herbert on bass, Dragan Gajic on drums and Tone Jansa on tenor sax do not disappoint either. This is the first time the album has been reissued since its original release and comes in limited quantities.

Review: Tad's Inhaler emerges as a hidden gem in the grunge landscape, a powerhouse album that deserves far more recognition. Produced by J Mascis, its grunge-meets-metal sound is relentless, filled with saturated riffage and infectious melodies that rival the genre's biggest hits. Tracks like 'Throat Locust' and 'Grease Box' pack punchy, memorable choruses that should have propelled Tad to fame alongside their peers. Despite its quality, Tad's rise was thwarted by a mix of overlooked promotion and, ironically, political correctness, exemplified when their label dropped them over a controversial promotional poster. This reissue on magenta vinyl serves as a timely reminder of their legacy, showcasing the album's enduring appeal and its rightful place in the grunge canon. Tad Doyle's uncompromising vision and the raw, unapologetic spirit that defined the genre's golden era is harnessed here in this one album to enjoy.

Review: Erik Tagg's Rendez-Vous is a gem from the late 70s that captures the essence of smooth jazz and soft rock with a soulful touch. Originally released in 1977 and produced by Hans Vermeulen, this album offers a rich blend of jazz, pop, and rhythm & blues, with mellow melodies and sophisticated arrangements that evoke a sense of warmth and romantic escapism. Tagg, known for his work with Beehive and Rainbow Train, delivers intricate harmonies and lush arrangements throughout Rendez-Vous, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the smooth, soulful sounds of the era. His vocals, soulful and warm, are complemented by a stylish horn section, strings, and light piano phrases that all contribute to the album's elegant feel. Although the album didn't achieve mainstream commercial success, it found a dedicated following and garnered critical acclaim within niche music circles, often compared to the works of John Valenti. The reissue of Rendez-Vous on translucent yellow vinyl includes four bonus tracks previously available only on CD. A celebration of one of the standout blue-eyed soul albums of the era.

Take that as you will - it's not for us to start guessing why one of the most economically disenfranchised parts of Britain has a tendency to encourage insane imaginations - The World That We Drive Through is typically escapist stuff from the outfit in question.

First unveiled in 2004, two years after The Tangent got together and around 12 months - give or take - following their debut album, it certainly set out a stall at the time. Weird musical-esque balladry complete with flute, insane blues-hued riff-a-thons, keyboard-driven atmospheric tomes, and metal-edged, grinding-yet-funky fare, it's varied and littered with big ideas.

Following on from 1997's self-released demo album In The Skin, the band would sign to Roadrunner Records for their major label debut Bitterness The Star in 2002; a project frontman Brock Lindow continues to consider his personal favourite. Over two decades on from initial release, the beautiful people over at Music On Vinyl are offering a long awaited reissue of this seminal beast on a lush 180 gram audiophile translucent blue vinyl LP, with each copy individually numbered for that additional collector's high.

Review: Irma Thomas, born Irma Lee in New Orleans, is routinely hailed the Soul Queen of the city. Once billed among Aretha Franklin and Etta James, Thomas eventually found her own recognition as an originary light repping New Orleans, less an international, commercial success story. Beginning her career in 1959, she was one of many voices who sung for a watershed moment r&b and soul, as labels like Minit and Imperial helped solidify the genre's identification with Louisiana, with its designs on the Southern soul genre at large. In 1966, Thomas released her second solo album, now reissued here through MOV. Including the iconic song 'Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)', which was co-written by Randy Newman and country star Jeannie Seely, the track became a hit, finding a toehold on the Billboard Hot 100. Beyond its commercial success, the ballad has garnered widespread recognition, notably appearing in several episodes of the hit series Black Mirror. But it's the record as a whole that really stirs our guts, obviating Thomas' early-career openness to romance and excess: "oh-oh, take a look at this girl, I'm the girl that wants you..." goes the title track...

Review: Prolific dub vocalist Linval Thompson has got a vast catalogue but is there any tune better in it than the title track from this newly reissued album originally from 1978 on Trojan Records? Sure, it's silly, it's juvenile, but for any tokers of the dope out there it is an anthem to live by. That one is worth the cover price alongs, frankly, but the rest of the tunes on this green audiophile pressing are just as natty, with heavy dubs and stoned sounds from front to back. Plenty make their praise to jah and if you put this one on it is sure to make your BBQ 100% more sunny no matter the actual weather.

Review: Following on from 1989's majorly successful and admittedly more commercial sounding fourth full-length Intuition, Trondheim glam metal-tinged hard rock heroes TNT would find themselves on the radar and eventual roster of Atlantic Records, who in 1992, would distribute the band's fifth album and first on the major label, Realized Fantasies. Praised by fans for its exceptional production with ludicrously bombastic percussion the whole way through, the project saw a sonic retracing of their more hardened edges, so as not to lose sight of their creative prowess. That being said, cuts such as the cheerful 'Easy Street' and epic ballad 'Lionheart' seem like they were purposefully designed to keep snooting record label execs off their proverbial backs. Never mind what glassy eyed nostalgia-baters say, Realized Fantasies goes hard as hell while delivering barrages of riffage, melody and playfully epic grandeur.

Review: To truly understand what's happening here you first need to know the background. Snowflakes Are Dancing is the delightfully evocative and - let's face it - wonderfully endearing title of Isao Tomita's second studio album. But this isn't really the Japanese musician's own work. Instead, it takes the arrangements of Claude Debussy, particularly the French composer's so-called 'tone paintings', and splashes new colour across the palette by way of some modern toys.

So while the guy who wrote the notes did so in the midst of industrialisation in Europe, his interpreter from the Far East worked on those tunes at a point in time when modernism was in full swing, and marching forward so quickly the future was already in sight. Using a Moog synthesiser, still then very much an experimental toy, and Mellotron, the result is an electronic overture worthy of the best sci-fi scores.

It features a number of covers of material aimed quite specifically at the English market such as John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads." Though first recorded in 1974, it still packs a punch and of course delivers plenty of the Jamaican band's melodic reggae with beautiful vocal harmonies. The whole thing oozes soul and is underpinned by a certain sense of spirituality that makes it all the more alluring and enduring.

It is one of many consistently high quality long players they put out and features a warm and familiar reggae sound that veers from stone reggae groove to rocksteady. Toots himself sadly passed away late in 2020 but his musical legacy will always live on through records like this, which have very much stood the test of time. Check stone cold classics like 'Just Like That', 'Gone With the Wind' and 'Let's Get Together'.

Review: There was a significant outpouring of grief when the death of Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert was announced in September. It was evidence of the ongoing love affair that many in the UK have with the music of Toots & The Maytals, a band who had been serving up ska and reggae records - and performing them live in Britain - since the late 1960s. The good news is that Hibbert lives on through his music, and 1981 album Knock Out - here reissued on vinyl - is one of he and his band's best. Breezy, warm and quietly soulful, the album boasts such as memorable songs as 'Revival Time', the synth-sporting 'Spend The Weekend', the loved-up 'Beautiful Woman' and the jaunty, Clavinet-heavy 'I Know We Can Make It'.

American r&b and funk band Tower of Power hail from Oakland, California and have had several lead vocalists, the most notable being Lenny Williams. Their most successful album was their self-titled third long player in 1973 - the first Williams featured on. It went gold in the US and has their most well-known single 'So Very Hard to Go' alongside plenty of other silky soul sounds that go from the downbeat and string-laced wallowings of 'Will I Ever Find A Love?' to the more funky and upbeat grooves of 'Get Yo' Feet Back On The Ground.'

Review: American r&b and funk band Tower of Power hail from Oakland, California and have had several lead vocalists, the most notable being Lenny Williams.

Review: Jupiter were kings of the middle of the road indie sound that dominated back at the turn of the millennium. If you don't remember the name you will remember the music as they topped charts and got heavy TV play, not least for most notable single 'I Wish You Would'. All in all this is an album of heartwarming and emotional indie pop niceness you're likely to fall head over heels for again, hence the fact it has been covered by innumerable stars since its initial release. In many ways, once you know the story the track takes on a very different form - far less amorous and much more about longing and lamentation. This latest reissue comes in red and black marble vinyl.

Review: This 1970s Brazilian soul and funk album is a hidden treasure, bringing together smooth vocals, lush harmonies, and vibrant rhythms that capture the innovative spirit of the era. The trio's seamless fusion of traditional Brazilian sounds with the contemporary funk and soul influences of the time results in a timeless groove that feels both familiar and fresh. Standout tracks like 'Sol Quarenta Graus' and 'Sempre Existe Alguem' showcase the group's dynamic range, blending rich melodies with deep, infectious rhythms. 'Sol Quarenta Graus' rides a sun-soaked vibe with its breezy, laid-back beat, while 'Sempre Existe Alguem' brings in a more introspective yet soulful sound, revealing the trio's ability to balance upbeat and mellow moods effortlessly. Raul Seixas, at the helm of production, elevates the record with his deft touch. The warmth and clarity of the sound give every track a lasting resonance, making it one of those albums that begs for repeat listening. With its blend of Brazilian and global influences, this album is truly one of those overlooked gems in Brazilian music history, deserving far more recognition for its contribution to the soul and funk movement of the 1970s. A must-listen for fans of classic funk with a tropical twist!

Released in 1971, Turrentine's smooth tenor saxophone melodies dance effortlessly over lush arrangements to create an atmosphere of warmth and sophistication. The album's title track is a standout that showcases Turrentine's unparalleled improvisational skills and ability to convey emotion through his music. Review: It's been far too long since this seminal slice of sprightly, swinging jazz from Stanley Turrentine and Milt Jackson was in arms reach. Originally released in 1972, Cherry is a stunning piece of work that also features the mighty Billy Cobham on drums, Ron Carter on bass and Bob James on keys, backing up Jackson's dexterous vibraphone flexing and Turrentine's lyrical sax. This repress on Music On Vinyl comes housed in a numbered, gatefold sleeve with the music itself pressed into gorgeous pink wax.

Review: Yellowstone is an American neo-Western drama centered on the Dutton family, whose massive cattle ranch borders Yellowstone National Park, the Broken Rock Indian reservation, and land developers. Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, and Kelly Reilly play the crossfire-caught Dutton family, and composer Brian Tyler, influenced by his experience in a Native American music group, evokes such turmoil and unchecked exploitation, through traditional Native American sounds and Western elements; percussion, woodwinds, and exotic instruments alongside cellos and basses are all incorporated, invoking the harrows of modern factionalism.
