Review: 2022 saw the unlikely return of late 90s New York screamo/"skramz" pioneers Saetia, who have seen a massive surge in popularity in the decades since their initial disbandment, due to being credited as a major influence by numerous affluent modern post-hardcore acts such as La Dispute and Touche Amore. Noted for their expansion of the chaotic "emoviolence" sound by imbuing their cataclysmic compositions with heightened melodrama, spoken-word vocals and poetic lyricism pulling from Greek tragedies, both their self-titled EP and sole full-length have been held aloft as quintessential blueprints for the genre in the decades since their original tenure. Following a hectic reunion schedule which has finally brought the group to new foreign shores across the UK and Europe, the three tracks that make up the Tendrils EP serve as their first new material in 26 years, marking the follow up to 1999's Eronel EP.

Review: Dublin band Sprints quickly return to the fore after the success of their recent highlight 'How Does The Story Go?' This new EP is destined to be heard loud at beer swilling festival main stage all over the world. It has powerful riffs, plenty of fuck you energy and sizeable choruses that will connect on a large scale. Karla Chubb's spoken-sung vocals bring an alt-rock feel with a critique of modern existence served up next to an exploration of what it is to grow up queer in the modern day.

Review: Often credited alongside the likes of Testament and Death Angel as one of the most integral groups of the thrash metal second wave, Phoenix, Arizona's Sacred Reich originally disbanded in 2000, four years on from their at-the-time swan song fourth LP Heal. While the band would reform in 2006 to embark on numerous legacy tours, it would be 23 years until they'd return to the studio to deliver their 2019 comeback Awakening (which marked the first recorded output without original guitarist Jason Rainey who tragically passed away in 2020). It's due to this persistent reforming and adding to their legacy, that in hindsight, Heal has absorbed a stable credence for serving as the initial full stop on the band's original tenure, complete with the OG line up. Reissued on lush red & orange marbled vinyl, the ever-reliable archive keepers at Metal Blade continue to remain as on the pulse as ever with regard to the insatiable appetites of collector's constantly scanning label rosters for overdue represses.

Review: No, not that Sade is the first thing to note or you will very much be in for a shock. This Sade is a gloomy metal band made up of Andrew Pozzy on vocals, guitars, piano, synth, Silvia on bass, backing vocals and Matt Sade on drums and pads with Maurizio Baggio also going for some additional guitar and synth work. This album has been informed by the pandemic and brings all new darkness to the band's sound. Dark-wave and goth moods pervade the tracks which all lay out a pessimistic and nihilistic view of the human condition.

Review: Originally released in 1977 (the year of punk's simultaneous birth and more notably, death), (I'm) Stranded has gone on to become, not only one of the most vital pieces of OG Aussie punk, but commonly considered as one of the quintessential early blueprints for an entire generation of artists. Staying on course and not even wading into the creative differences that would soon loom large over each subsequent follow up, this box set arrives as a joint collaboration between L.A. garage rock label In The Red, Universal Music Australia and spearheaded by Feel Presents and The Saints founder Ed Kuepper (later Laughing Clowns), who collectively deliver the original LP remastered for the time in four decades, along with never-before-pressed-to-wax bonus discs of a five-song live performance from Paddington Town Hall in Sydney in 1977, the band's full set from the Hope & Anchor Front Row Festival, London November 1977, all three tracks from the 1977 This Perfect Day 12" and all four tracks from 1977's 1-2-3-4 double 7" single, as well as the previously unreleased 1976 demo mix of the (I'm) Stranded LP. Also boasting a 28 page 12" x 12" photo essay of the band covering their origins from 1973 through the end of '77, authorised band history, an 8" x 10" 1976 promo photo, and sticker, this is fan service and an album celebratory box set done right.

Review: Saltpig are the cross-continental psychedelic duo of US singer and multi-instrumentalist Mitch Davis and Italian drummer Fabio Alessandrini (ex-Annihilator), and together they've crafted a self-titled debut as tart as their moniker. Pulling from retro psych fuzzed out bluesy desert rock, yet interspliced with avant-garde prog noodling, and even forays into the sludgy, heftier side of proto-doom metal; the pair conjure a Venn Diagram style of intersectionality between the genre's early roots and more menacing modernised approach. Lengthy instrumental dirges are broken up by Davis' esoteric croon, while a lysergic hue weaves around the hypnagogic sonic tapestries like the passing of initial nausea before the overwhelming come up.

Review: Following Glenn Danzig's departure from Misfits, but before re-branding/re-establishing all musical endeavours under the name of Danzig, the enigmatic, often controversial frontman would form Samhain, generally mis-pronounced as Sam Hane. With an increased focus on the macabre, occult and a less whimsical, cartoonish flare than his previous horror-punk troupe, their short-lived tenure only covered two full-lengths and an EP, while many regard this live compilation made of two separate performances from Danceteria, New York in 1985, and the Cabaret, Metro Chicago,

Review: Norwegian black metal mainstays, Satyricon, are no strangers to pursuing outlier projects and collaborations with differing artists and ensembles such as Anja Garbarek, Trondheimsolistene, and The Norwegian National Opera Chorus, to name but a few. Their latest endeavour sees an original scoring of arguably Norway's most famous artist, Edvard Munch, and a unique exhibition of his works at the Munch museum in Oslo. One look at Munch's most iconic piece, 'The Scream', should be enough to draw the connections between both artist's meditations on isolation and despair. A singular, 56-minute composition, aural companion-piece that traverses the depths of ambient, folkloric post-black metal in a manner that's been seldom heard from the duo of Satyr and Frost; this is the sound of two equally profound artists and their works coalescing in hideously ethereal abandon.

Review: Over two decades since its initial release, the third full-length from emo veterans, Saves The Day, is still heralded as a high watermark for the pop-punk/post-hardcore scene of the 21st century. Switching out acclaimed producer, Steve Evetts, who manned the desks of their first two albums, Elliot Smith collaborator Rob Schnapf was enlisted to help the band channel their dynamic influences and conflicting emotions into an exceptional work of alternative, melancholic beauty. 'Stay What You Are', is often regarded as one of the focal points of the emo movement arriving on more accessible shores, and you'd be hard-pressed to find any self-respecting list of genre essentials that omits the project. Influencing a myriad of today's most prevalent and dynamic acts, this scene staple belongs on the shelf of any self-proclaimed, unashamed lover of emo.

Review: This 1988 classic is the second full-length album from Chicago pop-punk pioneers Screeching Weasel. The album's quirky title references a phrase coined by friend Matt Carlson, who also inspired the band's name. Marking their first release on the Roadkill label which the band helped establish itself, the record is credited with shaping the future of pop-punk and skate-punk and for blending sharp humour with a melodic edge. This limited edition includes one black LP and one green LP featuring a bonus Live 88 set, an eight-page booklet with an in-depth interview with Ben Weasel, all packaged in a striking gold gatefold sleeve.

Review: The ill-fated Sex Pistols US tour of January 1978 has become as infamous and discussed as the band themselves, as it came at a time of rife turmoil between members whilst it was potentially beginning to dawn on them how out of place they were on their label, how inconsiderate and mismanaged they were being treated and how much more of a travelling circus show those in attendance were paying to see rather than genuinely caring for the music or message in the same manner of their homegrown fanbase. This exhaustion, frustration and evident burnout was all captured during these live performances, which after several semi-coherent releases have finally been isolated, properly sequenced and finally deliver the closest fly-on-the-wall experience to these implosive shows yet. Taken from their set at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, this is peak pissed off Pistols on the cusp of their ultimate breaking point. While the band are currently enjoying a celebratory jaunt with former Gallows vocalist Frank Carter replacing the MAGA man John Lydon, delivering the closest experience to the Never Mind The Bollocks era yet, those who'd rather not spend more than 100 quid on a ticket can now experience the authentic real thing from the comfort of their turntable.

Review: Nowadays regarded as the stuff of punk legend, the chaotic and ill-fated jaunt undertaken by the Sex Pistols across the US in January of 1978 was hindered by so many differing factors, it was almost as if they were set to fail. Plagued by poor management while trapped on a label with no real idea how to market such a tumultuous roster outlier, the band found themselves performing for those there out of mere curiosity more than their targeted audience or genuine fans, culminating in severe burn-out in real time, captured on these recordings. Finally, for the first time, several of these shows have been retooled to their correct sequencing with this collection reflecting the debaucherous live sets in all their feral glory that took place on January 5th at the South East Music Hall in Atlanta, Georgia, January 10th at the Longhorns Ballroom in Dallas, Texas, and January 14th at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, California. Boasting all of the essential anthems from 'God Save The Queen' to 'Pretty Vacant' and 'Anarchy In The UK', behind the energy is the sound of a band imploding, while today not all wounds have healed with the surviving members currently enjoying a celebration of their iconic Never Mind The Bollocks LP with former Gallows frontman Frank Carter stepping in for MAGA man Jon Lydon, who continues to lob barbs at his former bandmates whenever given half the chance.

Review: Seminal; containing or contributing to the seeds of later development: creative, original. Or at least that's one definition of a word that rarely feels more appropriate than when used in conjunction with Sex Pistols. Quite where we're supposed to begin writing about The Filth & The Fury is anyone's guess. A retrospective compilation encapsulating some of the punk pioneers' most cherished moments, alongside a slew of material that many less-informed fans may have previously been unaware of, let's start by simply saying 'it bangs'. Understatement of the century, despite their back catalogue of just one LP, Sex Pistols actually had an extraordinary output in terms of volume in the run up to debut (and sole) album, Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols. This is a chance to get more closely acquainted, and we compel you to seize it and hold on tight.

Review: Infamous, ill-fated and iconic all in equal measure, the Sex Pistols US tour of January 1978 has gone down in the annals of punk history as a chaotic state of affairs. Mismanaged by their team, stuck on a label only interested in their prowess for generating headlines and performing night after night to crowds more curious than engaged, the resulting jaunt would eventually lead to the band's total implosion. After years of these live recordings being distributed in piece-meal form, the recordings from this tour have finally been accurately sourced, re-sequenced and now delivered as individual live LPs with this pressing coming from their show at the Longhorns Ballroom in Dallas, Texas. The sheer exhaustion, frustration and oncoming burnout are evident through these feral performances, almost as if hearing the once youthful pioneers imploding in real time. Currently undertaking a costly world tour accompanied by former Gallows vocalist, Mr. Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes himself standing in for the now MAGA touting John Lydon, it's the closest fans will likely ever get to experiencing the Never Mind The Bollocks era, with these authentic real thing recordings coming in at a close second, delivered from the familiar comfort of your turntable.

Review: A well recorded, fascinating glimpse into the earlier days of the most notorious punk band of all time, captured at a show at the rarely acknowledged 76 Club in Burton-on-Trent. It's a suitable setting, of course, as British punk was the voice of the suburbs and the small towns around the UK that, ironically, all so often banned them from visiting. The material that would form their only studio album - surely one of the most seminal LPs of all time - Never Mind The Bollocks... was still taking shape at this point, with 'New York' and 'Seventeen' present but nestling under working titles alongside non-album original 'I Wanna Be Me'. There are also outings for a selection of cover versions that show the influences that shaped the revolutionary sound about to turn music on its head, from The Stooges' 'No Fun' and The Who's 'Substitute' to the Dave Berry 1964 single flip track 'Don't Gimme No Lip Child' and The Monkees' '(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone'. Top chaos for cash fun.

Review: This Record Store Day 2025 exclusive marks the vinyl debut of First Love, Last Rites-the 1997 indie film soundtrack composed by D.C. alt-rock band Shudder To Think. The album features collaborations with Jeff Buckley, Liz Phair, Billy Corgan, John Doe and Robin Zander among more. Notably, Buckley's rendition of 'I Want Someone Badly' stands out as one of his final recordings and finds him delivering an emotionally charged performance. The soundtrack's blend of indie rock and poignant lyrics in fine vocals captures the film's introspective tone and now this limited edition release makes this '90s classic available on vinyl for the first time.

Review: Side By Side could definitely have made a bigger impact. Spawned from the already well-established and frighteningly fertile New York hardcore punk scene of the late-1980s, they would only offer up a couple of releases, both of entitled 'You're Only Young Once', coming in the form of an original EP, and subsequent expanded edition taking the number of tracks up to 22, landing almost a decade later.

Both arrived on Revelation Records, an imprint that was particularly revered at the time and credited with creating, or at least providing a platform for, the 'youth crew' hardcore movement. Which is exactly where you'd place Side By Side. Right place at the right moment, then, running through the songs here there's no denying the talent at play, either, from the raw, gnarling rhythm of 'The Time Is Now' to sublime guitar chaos on 'You're Only Young Once'.

The creative pair's debut album Grave of A Dog put them right up there with the best bands in the heavy metal scene. They now follow it up with another album that redefined heavy guitar sounds. Lockstep Bloodwar is an eclectic one sound wise and it features some big names making guts appearances such as Gangsta Boo from Three 6 Mafia, YoshimiO from Boredoms, plus Midwife, Lane Shii Otayonii and more. This version comes on limited translucent red marbled vinyl for a look as freaky as the music sounds.

Review: Sihir's Ular Akan Patuk is a debut LP that delivers fifteen minutes of intense hardcore reminiscent of a burning police station. The album features razor-sharp feedback and industrial sounds intertwined with traditional music to create a euphoric yet brutal experience. This collaboration of punk musicians from Colombia, Nusantara, Spain, and Sweden presents raw punk with crashing intent all driven by phased percussion. The striking artwork by Javanese artist Enka Komariah illustrates a supernatural narrative that enhances the album's thematic depth. With lyrics in Bahasa Melayu addressing issues from imperialism to women's rights, this one is a powerful, euphoric protest.

Review: Best known as the powerhouse frontwoman for Dutch symphonic metal collective Epica, the enigmatic, operatically trained Simone Simons makes her solo debut with Vermillion. Written entirely in collaboration with Arjen Lucassen (mastermind behind prog rock opera project Ayreon) at his home studio, the material marries Simons' grandiose cadence and overwhelming delivery with sonics both familiar and alien to her recorded output, drawing on lush orchestral arrangements as well as bombastic, melodic death metal-inspired riffage and more subdued moments of lysergic, melodious prog. Longtime bandmate Mark Jansen of Epica also makes an appearance, along with Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White-Gluz and Apocalyptica's Perttu Kivilaakso.

Review: Still going strong since their 2016 reformation, even dropping their latest full-length Destination Dusseldorf in 2023, Dunfermline's sons Skids originally formed in 1977. Within six months of their inception, the band had dropped the Charles EP which would lead them to the attention of legendary BBC radio DJ John Peel, with whom they would record five separate sessions over the next two years while working on their first three LPs released during that period - Scared To Dance (1979), Days In Europa (1979) and The Absolute Game (1980). This 2xLP collection collates all of these sessions and boasts choice from some of the aforementioned albums such as 'Six Times', 'Masquerade', and the highly popularised once covered by U2 and Green Day 'The Saints Are Coming', while also offering never officially released cuts like 'Hang On To The Shadows' as well as their frenetic cover of Lou Reed's 'Walk On The Wild Side'.

Review: Returning with their follow up to 2023's major breakout third album Take Me Back To Eden, London's mysterious, masked prog-metal mystics Sleep Token make their boldest statement yet with Even In Arcadia. Known for their brazen genre-fluidity that melds elements of djent, metalcore and post-rock with even further leftfield elements of post-classical, hip-hop, trap and indie-pop, the band led by the enigmatic Vessel have seen a massive expansion in popularity since the release of their previous full-length. Headlining Download 2025 before embarking on their first US Arena Tour, this latest endeavour maximises their sonic abandon and expands upon their own blueprint in the process with the lead single 'Emergence' beginning life as a piano ballad before morphing into ambi-trap groove metal anthemics before finally fading into a lush, jazzy saxophone and piano finish. Set to be one of the highest selling/streaming/controversial/debated/discussed metal-centric releases of the year, Sleep Token appear set to take on the world with their newfound fame and fearless disregard for sonic boundaries or metal elitism.

Review: .Yorkshire self-proclaimed "swamp death" trio Slimelord have spent the past half-decade slowly crafting their impenetrable, murky brand of heaving, sludgy doom-laden extreme metal over the course of several challenging EPs. A mulchy path littered with festering fauna, alien plant-life, and hallucinogenic colours finally leads to their mind-melting debut full-length Chytridiomycosis Relinquished. Committing further to their style and aesthetic than ever before, the material lyrically delves into geology, ancient myths, world history, environmentalism and fantasy; weaving these facets into a Lovecraftian swamp world of cosmic dread, emboldened by field recordings of marshland and swamps to imbue the kaleidoscopic, hyper-technical compositions with an incomparable immersive quality. You may feel the need to take a shower after spinning.

Review: At the turn of the 21st century, Slipknot opted to take the newfound fame and success rewarded by their self-titled debut, and run it into the ground in, what has to be, one of the most intriguing examples of chaos and inner band turmoil lending to an integral work.

Named after their home state, 'Iowa', still remains an utterly frightening project, driven by addiction, depression, and encompassing negativity. Refusing to pursue a more accessible route regardless of the ensuing momentum around them, the collective would lash out with an extremely severe batch of material that remains challenging even by today's standards.

While the now iconic leads singles, 'My Plague' and 'Left Behind' remain embedded in the metal spectrum, deeper cuts such as the caustic 'People = Shit', nihilism rally of 'The Heretic Anthem' or the decrepit defeatism of 'Skin Ticket' offer the bleakest look into the band's psyche at their most temperamental of conditions.

The fact that frontman Corey Taylor has confessed that the 14-minute closing title-track was recorded while highly inebriated and cutting himself with a broken liquor bottle, should be all the background one could need when approaching this complex, unforgiving beast of an album.

Reissued after far too long an absence, this beautiful new rendering finally allows for a timeless endeavour to be rediscovered in all of its violent glory; rarely bridging the vast dichotomy between mainstream and extreme metal.

Review: Upon the strange reception received by the creatively uncertain, '.5: The Gray Chapter', many wondered where the Iowa collective would set their sights to next. Processing the lingering grief of losing their bassist, Paul Gray, proved a major undertaking that many naturally assumed would be the final output from the 9, but 2019's, 'We Are Not Your Kind', proved to be a malodorous mission statement, reminding all just how and why Slipknot are one of the biggest metal acts in history. With utterly intense cuts such as 'Nero Forte' and 'Unsainted', this sixth full-length proved to be the revitalised rebirth many anticipated from its predecessor, while foreshadowing a creative future seemingly impossible a few years prior.

Review: Continuing the onslaught of Slipknot back catalogue reissues, '0.5: The Gray Chapter', saw the collective channel the shared grief and inner turmoil of losing their bassist Paul Gray, into a dynamic, vicious fifth full-length that served as a twisted follow up to 2008's global success, 'All Hope Is Gone.' Harboring some of their darkest singles in over a decade, such as the blistering, 'The Devil In I', or the claustrophobic assault of, 'Custer', many may consider the project to be the outlier within the 9's canon, but with drummer Joey Jordison's last recorded performance, and before the rebirth of 'We Are Not Your Kind', this work served as a complicated reflection of artists lost in a deep state of bewilderment and trauma; utilising their connection and artform to process and heal in ugly, chaotic abandon.

Review: The much anticipated follow up to 2003's, 'Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses', almost painted Slipknot into an uncertain corner, but once the now iconic 'Psychosocial' dropped, essentially all reservations were laid to rest.

Continuing to stray further from the bile and limescale grit of their earlier work, 'All Hope Is Gone', took the melodic lessons of its predecessor, and expanded upon them with dynamic and controversial results. From the crushing breakdowns and visceral fury of 'Gematria (The Killing Name)', to the Stone Sour leaning, big melody hooks of 'Sulfur' and 'Dead Memories', all the way to arguably one of the strongest points of contention, the utterly vulnerable and melancholic 'Snuff', would reveal dimensions of the Iowa 9-piece some never thought possible.

Possibly the most misunderstood entry in the collective canon, the project has garnered its own cult status in recent years, and also poignantly marks bassist Paul Grey's final effort with the group before his untimely passing in 2010.

Review:
The nu-metal scene of the late nineties/early noughties arguably birthed no act as seminal or incomparable as the masked, nine-member Iowa collective known as Slipknot.

Their highly influential self-titled full-length debut marked the first studio appearance of now iconic vocalist and frontman, Corey Taylor, whose unkempt aggression and visceral performance would help chart a course for a group destined for exposure and acclaim far beyond their murky compositions.

With buzzsaw riffs, a claustrophobic percussive assault and Taylor's vitriolic pennings, cuts such as '(Sic)', and 'Eye Less' have maintained their integral ferocity decades on while the rap-metal frenetics of 'Spit It Out' and melodious lead single 'Wait & Bleed' have remained the high water mark for all chasms of mainstream metal to this day.

Out of print and resold at extortionate prices for years, this reissue is a vital piece of the puzzle for any fan of the nine or collector of genre staples. Don't sleep on this rare chance to lock down a twisted classic.

Review: Originally formed in London in 1976, The Slits made major waves with the frenetic post-punk energy of their acclaimed 1979 debut LP Cut, whilst their 1981 sophomore follow up (aka "difficult second album") Return of the Giant Slits would arrive mere months before the group's initial disbandment. Highlighting the internal creative differences occurring at the time of recording, the material showcases a major expansion of sound, pulling from rhythmic afro-pop and dub, conjuring a unique "world music" approach to post-punk before the likes of Vampire Weekend were even a twinkle in their father's eyes. The album would also serve as their last output until their return with the 2006 Revenge of the Killer Slits EP followed by 2009's third full-length Trapped Animal.

Review: Drunkenly steamrolling their way out of Indianapolis, Indiana in 1984, punk shithead extraordinaries Sloppy Seconds committed themselves to their "junk rock band" ethos with a bevvy of chaotic, catchy, and most importantly provocative bangers that made light of everything from pornography to homophobia to obesity to drug addiction. Musically indebted to The Ramones (only if they mainlined crack into their eyeballs), and bizarrely inspired by 1976's KISS album Destroyer, the members would begin crafting what would eventually mutate into 1989's Destroyed with zero label interest or backing. That was until Toxic Shock (yes, that is the name of the original label) feasted their ears on some early demos before decreeing that the entire worldwide punk community needed to be this offended. Boasting snarky anthems that have aged like old milk such as the quintessential 'I Don't Wanna Be A Homosexual', as well as the ode to underage pornographic actress Traci Lords on 'Come Back, Traci', few punk classics set the bar as low as Sloppy Seconds, and ain't that the point?

Whilst receiving somewhat of a mixed reception upon release due its more radio-friendly oriented sound, longtime staples such as 'Frederick', 'Seven Ways Of Going' and 'Dancing Barefoot' all make appearances, exuding Smith's unbothered stance towards critical reception, while also making room for Easter deep cut 'Space Monkey', as well as a reliably hefty dose of material from her classic 1975 debut solo LP Horses, including 'Redondo Beach' and 'Kimberly'.

Review: Live set recording is an underrated art. It's about capturing the feel of the room as much as it is about showcasing a band's live prowess. Thankfully, punk godfathers Social Distortion appear to realise this and have nailed it with their live acoustic recordings. The band are known for their signature sound of punk, bluesy rock n' roll and outlaw country and the acoustic versions give the band a chance to highlight their versatility, ramp up the country/folk side and gives singer Mike Ness the spotlight. Swapping out the thrashy power chords for something janglier and jollier, their Johnny Cash cover 'Ring Of Fire' is pure joy. 'Cold Feelings' features a terrific counter melody from the accordion and the overall atmosphere of the song makes it easy to feel transported to a ye olde tavern somewhere in Ireland, sat around a table with a roaring fire, with the wind blowing outside. Elsewhere, 'Down Here With The Rest Of Us' is Social Distortion at their emotionally charged best. Remarkable here is the restraint shown by a band who usually just let rip. You'd be forgiven for thinking they weren't full-time into this acoustic thing.

To mark the anniversary it is getting a special 40th edition reissue and has been freshly mastered from the original analogue tapes and pressed up to 180-gram vinyl for the occasion. The nine songs that were on the original release of the album all feature such as the much loved title track 'Mommy's Little Monster' and single 'Another State of Mind'. Proper original punk business from the US greats.

Review: Originally released in 1992, the fifth full-length from the German thrash metal pioneers marked a notable embracing of more modern metallic composition, pulling from the burgeoning death metal sound to help sharpen their sonic assault. What resulted was a band who originally formed in 1981 proving they could still go riff for riff with any of their more youthful contemporaries with a barrage of their most frenetic, fast-paced speed-thrash up to that point in their career. Their final effort with founding drummer Chris Witchhunter, the LP also marked the debut of guitarist Andy Brings and now comes home newly remastered and spread out across a lush red vinyl 2xLP.

Review: In 1981, as the punk genre began to simultaneously expand and collapse in on itself, well across the pond, a group known as Solucion Mortal would stake their claim as arguably the most vital Mexican punk band to ever exist. Hailing from Tijuana, the bevvy of crusty influences smashed against the group's own perception of what punk meant to them, evidenced greatly by their pummelling debut, 'Live At Fairmont'. This self-titled compilation includes the entire full-length, along with the cassette release, 'En Iguanas', as well as a choice cut from, 'Al Filo De Abismo.' If you feel a slight pang of fomo (fear of missing out) that you've never delved into the criminally overlooked work of Mexico's seminal punk contributors, this collection serves as the perfect crash course.

Review: While the Cavalera brothers would become renowned for their work with Sepultura, many will admit to having little reservations about jumping ship to Soulfly when the time came. With frontman Max Cavalera's penchant for ferocious thrash riffage, husking growls and tribal infusions, this later project would bolster some of the most vicious thrash-punk both sides of the millennium. 'The Soul Remains Insane' compiles all four studio albums, released between 1998 to 2004, along with a bonus LP of b-sides, rarities and unreleased tracks. A book with rare interviews offering insight into each record is also included, making this 4 album/1 compilation, 5xLP collection a true spectacle of fan service to behold.

Review: Tim Barnes, Marco Fusinato, Aaron Hemphill, Brad Laner, Katsura Mouri, Ralf Wehowsky, and C Spencer Yeh are drafted to collaborate with Sissy Spacek for this new outing from the Los Angeles experimental outfit. Now 26 years young, the group originally emerged from the very anti-Tinsel Town sounding noise and grindcore scene in Southern California, but to say that was just the beginning of their journey would be an understatement. Quite where we've ended up now is anyone's guess, mind. Entrance seems to be a noisy place that has little by way of structure but plenty in terms of ideas. Concerned with at least some of musique concrete's principles, one of the best ways to describe what's here is by asking what's not here. This is the sound of a loud world full of clangs, bangs, whirs, bolts, brittles, emotions and fantastical masterplans. A place that's about the atmosphere and feeling, rather than the tune.

Review: BBE Music continues to delve into the exceptional back catalogue of Detroit's Strata label. Overall, there's not a huge amount there, with just ten albums released during the imprint's tenure. Nevertheless, what's there has plenty worth diving into, not least the stunning cover designs by iconic jazz poet John Sinclair - aesthetics to set the mood, make no mistake.
Sphere's Inside Ourselves was the third record put out on the platform. Recorded live at the Detroit Institute of Arts on 28th June 1970, and like much of the Strata stuff, this is about boundary-free jazz that captivates and compels the listener as much as it seems to entrance and possess those playing it. Indicative of the overall standard that came out of the camp itself, collective memories of Sphere themselves seem hazy, but John Dana, Jimmy Peluso, Keith Vreeland, Eddie Nuccilli and Larry Nozero made up the outfit, so props to them.

Review: Arizona doom-metal outfit, Spirit Adrift, are set to follow up last year's exceptional, 'Forge Your Future' EP, with '20 Centuries Gone'; a collection of covers from a diverse array of artists all intrinsic to the band's core dynamic. Running the gamut of deep, underrated tracks from the likes of Type O Negative, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Thin Lizzy and Pantera, this mini-LP of sorts offers a unique insight into the essential components which primary songsmith Nate Garrett constantly finds himself reverting back to, in search of inspiration and rejuvenation. Featuring two brand new songs; the pummeling 'Sorcerer's Fate', and the aptly titled, 'Mass Formation Psychosis', as well as some major surprises (the rendition of Metallica's 'Ride The Lightning' deep cut, 'Escape', is exceptionally potent), this collection keeps the momentum churning on from 2020's last full-length, 'Enlightened in Eternity', and serves as testament to the band's inability to sit still for more than a few months.

Review: .Sydney based Aussie pop-punks Stand Atlantic return with their follow up to 2022's F.E.A.R. in the form of fourth full-length Was Here. Embracing the "pop" side of their subgenre signifier more than ever before, the material on display strays further from the Hopeless Records alumni Blink-182/New Found Glory worship and careens headlong into synth-laden euphoric arena-level pop-rock, with several features from the likes of PVRIS, Sueco, and Polaris. Still one foot firmly planted in their punk origins but with eyes set on a grandiose, maximalised versions of themselves, the "Stand Atlantic Was Here" mantra feels entirely apt and fitting.

Review: Formed in Santa Rosa, California in 2010, State Faults grown to become underground heroes in their respective scenes due to their seamless coalescing of anguished sonics to paint an aural image of panic. Marrying the chaotic abandon of screamo and post-hardcore with elements of black metal, shoegaze, post-rock and ambient, their cathartic wall-of-sound feels initially oppressive before eventually enshrouding like a blanket of overwhelming emotion. Returning five years on from 2019's Clairvoyant, the band's fourth full-length Children Of The Moon seeks to eclipse each preceding endeavour with a grandiose collection of avant-hardcore post-screamo that searches to quell the pain of love, grief and existence through spiritual enlightenment, both transcendental and occult..

Review: Originally formed in 1977 in Belfast at the height of The Troubles, Stiff Little Fingers should require little to no introduction for any self-proclaimed punk aficionado, with the band credited as the first punk outfit to ever record and release output in Northern Ireland. The aptly titled The Singles 1978-1983 offers a double CD compilation collating all of their A and B-sides issued during their initial tenure, including the hit singles 'Straw Dogs', 'At The Edge', 'Nobody's Hero', and the haunting 'Bits Of Kids', as well as a bevvy of deeper, overlooked cuts. Complete with a booklet containing detailed liner notes on each single plus illustrations of all relevant sleeves, the collection serves as both a crash course for beginners and a triumphant nostalgia trip for lifer-listeners.
