Review: Expansion have been busy recently with a wealth of superb releases all dropping in relatively quick succession. This one comes from 70s and 80s Us soul family, Family Brown. They put out just one album in 1978 and a couple of singles with these two tunes now pressed onto 45rpm some of the best. On the a-side is the slow motion stepper 'Never Had A Love' which has pirouetting strings and male and female vocals playing off in seductive fashion. On the flip is the more groovy but just as melodically lush 'Listen.'

Review: Given the critical reception rightly afforded to Tahliah Barnett's superb debut album as FKA Twigs, it makes perfect sense for Young Turks to rustle up a swift reissue of FKA Twigs, the four track 12" that announced her to the pop music world last year. This EP was the first instance of Barnett's ethereal vocals weaved in amidst production work from Arca that was at times floating, others crushingly pressurised. Naturally the effects of the music are heightened when combined with Jesse Kanda's mind bending videos ("Water Me" especially) but late comers to the magic of Twigs will be all over this. Do check "Papi Pacify" as Arca is on some "Cry Me A River" era Timbalaand tip.

Review: Ramsel casts it all the way back to 1968 for this new 45rpm. It's a reissue of Wade Flemons, an American soul singer from Kansas who put out only one album but plenty of singles. 'Jeanette' is one of them and is one that fetches almost four figures on the reg whenever it pops up in original format on second hand markets. This faithful reissue is an exact replica of the '68 version and features the up-tempo soul-drenched sounds of 'Jeanette' on one side and 'What A Price To Pay' on the flip, a more slow and heartbroken sound.

Review: The Florence label is back with more of its high grade funk here with the eponymous artist or artists behind another healthy dose on this new 7". 'Dancing' is a raw sound with slapping drum hits and plenty of noodling synth lines that elevate the whole thing next to big horns. But the icing on the cake is of course the raw vocal lead that is offset by some more sooth female coos. A more funky and bouncy break is the foundation of the flipside joint 'Be My Baby' with its alluring vocals and raw 60s aesthetic serving to get you up on your toes.

Review: As you will well know if you are reading this, prog house is back and it has been for ages. As always with any revival, there is good stuff and weak stuff. This EP is very much the corner from Forces of Nature, with authentic 90s soundscapes mixing up lush ambient synth designs, dreamy Italo drums and real musical depth. 'Jupiter' is super smooth and seductive as it cruises at high altitude, then 'Tripping' is a downbeat workout and 'The Bomb' takes you to the heavens on gorgeous melodies while the bass plunges low. Review: The Foster Jackson Group are one of those forgotten but highly coveted one-hit disco wonders that exist in the bottomless pit that is often classed simply as 'soul'. All that aside, these people made an incredible 12" back in 1979 that has been going for serious bucks on the second-hand market, but thankfully the prodigious P&P Records have saved the day yet again. "Feel The Spirit" is a devilish, inimitable disco jingle that is split between the more percussion ridden "Long Disco Version", and a more contained, more floor-focussed "Disco Version" They both contain that instantly addictive dose of piano, though. Review: Arthur Foy was a popular solo performer and band member in the late 70s and early 80s. He was born in Alabama but raised in Mississippi and later lived in Louisiana. His masterpiece 'Love Dreams' came in 1980 and has his rich and soulful vocals front and centre with great arrangement and tight rhythms. It is a super hard to find original and prove expensive rarity. Here it gets pressed up with southern strutter 'Love Storm' which was co-produced and written with the legendary Carl Marshall. Arthur passed in 2018 and this official reissue is dedicated to his memory.

Review: Rock A Shaka comes thorough with more of the sort of sun-kissed and horizontal reggae sounds that have us dreaming of summer. This one finds Phil Francis working with The New Horizon Band on the heart-melting 'Smile On My Face'. It has fat, lazy drum wobbles with steamy trumpet motifs ringing out into a cloudless blue sky. Neat guitar riffs compliment the groove with a blue-eyed soul vocal up top and plenty of lovely lo-fi production finishing it in style. On the flip-side is a version without the vocal that still makes its way into your affections, but the vocal really is the one to beat.

Review: Frank Ocean's 'Pink + White' was produced by Pharrell Williams and features some uncredited backing vocals from Beyonce. The track details Ocean's memories of his youth and a time when someone close to him died - someone who had taught him lessons that stayed with him - and so naturally the theme of mortality features a lot. The title comes from the sky he saw while driving with this old friend and it's a gorgeously deep and sultry piece of r&b that comes backed with 'Nights' on this limited edition 7".

Review: Before making it big with Maze, Frankie Beverly was the man behind Raw Soul, a heavyweight, politically conscious band whose fuzzy, full-throttle sound sat somewhere between the J.B's and Sly & The Family Stone. The band's most famous moment was 1975 single 'Color Blind', which was originally recorded as 'What's The Color?' Here that never-before-heard recording is finally issued. Rich in fuzz-soaked horns, crunchy drum-breaks, weighty bass and clipped funk guitar licks, the track features some superb, James Brown style lead vocals from Beverly. Brilliantly, there's also a chance to savour the unheard Raw Soul instrumental version, which features an extended, DJ-friendly drum solo midway through. A slice of history that's well worth picking up. As played by DJ Koco....

Review: Soul Brother present two sublime cuts by Carolyn Franklin, younger sister to Aretha, for their debut appearance on the seven inch format. On top of her significant body of work as a songwriter and background artist for Aretha and several other acts of the 60s and 70s, Carolyn Franklin record four solo albums and several singles for the RCA label. Rare groove heads favour Franklin's fourth LP If You Want Me in particular, issued in 1976 but originally recorded three years earlier, and Soul Brother have licensed two highlights for this 7" which demonstrate Carolyn's range for anyone not familiar with her work. "Sunshine Holiday" is a psyche delight akin to Linda Lewis' "Reach For The Truth" whilst "Deal With It" is pure funk.

Review: Burning Sole does a fine job of putting Switzerland on the map for red hot funk and it has for a long old time now. The latest missive from the mountains is a heavily limited 7" from Freethinker Funk Essence that kicks off with 'Just Need Your Love' (feat Ria Currie). It has plenty of swing to it and warm organ chord vamps that bring an old school feel while funky riffs and the belting vocals really make it standout. 'Motorcycle Girl' is a low slung funker with more guitar riffs piled up next to loose percussion.

Review: The Burning Sole label deals in small run 7"s that pack a massive punch and that is the case with this latest 45. As well as offering it up on stand back wax they have pressed these tidy blue versions of Freethinker Funk Essence's latest missive 'Just Need Your Love' (feat Ria Currie). It swings and has arm chords right thorough the middle as well as a perfectly energising vocal. Flip it over and you will find 'Motorcycle Girl' which is slower but no less funky.

Produced by Darryl Gibbs of The Strikers and expertly mixed by Tony Humphries, this disco boogie gem soared in underground dance clubs across Chicago and New York, championed by DJs like Mancuso, Larry Levan, and Ron Hardy. Review: Little is known about Friction Band's hyper-rare 45" besides the fact it's a brilliant example of outsider, slightly experimental style of modern soul, it's passed hands for strong triple figures in recent years and it's just been injected with a whole new lease of life by Fryer. "Watchin' You" is a footloose boogie jam with unabashed use of freeform keys while "To The Sky" flips for a softer, more sentimental soul affair that's fringed by just the right amount of dreamy cosmicity. Review: The Fruit Band hails from Jacksonville and is one of the finest funk practitioners the city has ever produced. The sharp earned amongst you will already know that Athens of the North released a previously unrelated album from the group some years back. That is now resisted and some of the key tunes from it get their own real on a standalone 45 in a handmade folder cover. It is a one-time pressing with the upbeat energy of 'If You Feel It Say Yeah' and the contrasting mellow magic of 'Lost The Love ' on the flip.

Review: The Epsilon Record Co label has been digging deep again to turn out some obscure soul treasure. This one has never been released before and so is sure to become a staple in the sets of DJs like Hunee and Floating Points. 'What Will I Be' is a busy dancer, with hard ass chord work and big drum hits all softened by a speedy but emotive falsetto. On the backside is Let's Try It Again' from 1980, another heart aching and tender soul nugget with expressive melodies and nagging bass under rolling drums. Both are stone cold gems.

Review: Athens of the North has a famously busy rate of release and so it is no surprise that they keep that up even in the first months of the year. A slew of singles and an album are all dropping at the same time and this is one of them - yet another gold standard reissue, this time of Charles Barnwell's band The Funnybone Express. Review: The seventh in this series of 7" singles is by Bristol and Avon's Kinlaw and Franco Franco and it is a rare mix of sounds with R&B, Italian rap and twisted basslines all defining the tracks. 'Crocs On The Plough' is industrial and experimental in its production - earth-shattering bass, police sirens, and soot-black synths, but background chords bring light as the vocals are delivered with guttural rawness. On the flip, the OSVMVSM version slows things right down to a crawl and the distorted synths and crunchy textures take on even more otherworld character.

Review: Eclectic Beats Music is building up a fine head of steam and the sixth outing is a tidy 7" featuring two red-hot Latin broken beat cuts. The opener is a collaborative remix from Born74 and Fradinho who do a superb job of flipping Jorge Ivan Martin's original gem 'Yo Tambien Baile La Conga' into something more contemporary with fresh broken beats, plenty of steamy Latin flavours all finished off in electric fashion with Frank Santiuste's trumpet solos. Flip this one over and you will find Fradinho unearth an easier cut and again update with some compelling broken beats and funk as well as a rich bassline and silky synth solos.

Review: Prepare to be wowed by this reissue of a classic Roberta Flack album. It is one that is now 50+ years old so comes on special clear vinyl. It topped the charts in 1972, some three years after it was actually released in 1969. Of course, it is best known for the tune 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' which was in Clint Eastwood's movie 'Play Misty for Me'. It went on to stay at number one for six weeks and then won the Grammyr Award for Record of the Year in 1973. Allegedly the record only took 10 hours to complete in its entirety, and what a record it is.

Review: "A revelatory blast of soul, R&B and off-the-rails piano jams". Rolling Stone magazine could not have been much clearer in its recommendation of Plain Sight. Neal Francis' second album, released in 2021, nodded to everyone from George Clinton to Sly and the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield to Prince. It was pop songwriting in the truest sense - free and experimental yet somehow universally enjoyable and captivating. The third, Francis Comes Alive, offered, not more of the same, but equally generous helpings of funk-infused, r&b topped soul-groove with a lashings of overbite. Now Return To Zero proves those were no flukes. That familiarly unpredictable yet soothing Francis sound is more refined and elegant than ever, but still seems to want to take you towards the hazy neon glow of a backstreet dancefloor long after dark.
