Saudade Vem Correndo (DJ Koco edit) (4:10)
Review: 45Trio is a Japanese jazz outfit comprised of Junichi Sunayama, Masahiko Kubo and Shingo Hirakawa that has been turning out fresh jams since 2013 including an album and several 45rpms. 'Saudade Vem Correndo' is a new funk and soul-infused jazz sound that arrives especially for Record Store Day 2023 on limited edition 7". The A-side original is a nice louche and late-night lounge groove with magical melodies and catchy samba rhythms. On the flip is a DJ Koco edit that brings a hip-hop vibe that reminds of the late great J Dilla.

Review: Helmed by producer and multi-instrumentalist Keisuke Yamazoe, Alfex Combo are a deep funk and jazz-funk outfit whose occasional releases are rarely less than incendiary. Their latest outing - their first for two years according to our records - is another special, must-check missive. Check first A-side 'Intermezzo', a killer cover of the Webster Lewis composition that adds righteous horn motifs and hard-wired sax solos to a bustling, life-affirming deep funk groove. Over on the flip, vibraphone player Masami Watanabe excels on a Latin-tinged jazz-funk number that's every bit as essential as the party-rocking A-side.

Review:  Dig Find Sample Chop Repeat is a new American label throwing its hat into the world of funky 45s. They put each one out on black wax as well as on special coloured vinyl. Alex Santos Orchestar has taken care of this one, as well as the debut, and is made up of a fine group of musicians playing guitar, brass, vocals, drums, congas, keys and trombone. 'Devika(Goddess)' is awash with funk and jazz, slide guitar and spiritual percussion and it's a golden groove for late night slow dancing. 'Expansions' is a little more upbeat but just as richly musical and seductive.

Yellow Bird (4:44)
Review: Monty Alexander's 'Love & Happiness,' it might not surprise you to learn, is a cover version of the great Al Green's 'Love & Happiness.' He hooked up with Ernest Ranglin for the occasion and the pair laid it down in 1974, two years after the original came out, with super slick jazz-funk fusion over a reggae tinged beat. The original chords are recognisable, but the whole track i such more mellifluous and bright, the golden chords oozing warmth and the rolling rhythm getting you feeling all snuggly and loved up. Definitely worth a place in your collection.

Mom & Dad (feat Claudia Lennear) (4:23)
Time After Time (4:48)
Review: ,Joe Bataan has been busy in East L.A. with Orquesta Rene for this new Latin jazz double 7" courtesy of Steady Beat. It features four all new pieces drenched in soul and percussion, starting with 'So Fine' (feat Big Sandy), a mid tempo groove with vocal longing and languid horns. 'Mestizo' is a more steamy and intimate piece with sung-spoken lyrics and glowing, golden chords. 'Mom & Dad' (feat Claudia Lennear) has s steamy shuffle to its rhythms and classic Latin percussive sounds next to a call and response vocal and 'Time After Time' closes with a sentimental feel.

Jimmy "Bo" Horne - "Hey There Jim" (2:34)
Lynn Williams - "How Can You Call Love Fascination" (2:26)
Review: Jimmy Bo Horne brings his raw and expressive vocals to this new release on Japanese label Ultra Vybe. The oft-sampled America singer, writer and producer has been turning out such sounds since the mid 70s but remains on top of his game here. The big horns bring energy, the rolling rhythm section gets you up on your feet and the whole thing screams floor filler. On the flip is Lynn Williams with 'How Can You Call Love Fascination,' a much more slow and sensual soul tune with acrobatic vocals and nice piano fills next to a big horn section.

Review: BunnDebrettQuintet has got a monster modern soul tunes on their hands here with the legendary Brian Auger on Hammond B3 helping bring the style. The glorious A-side 'Truth In My Tears' has a raw but heartfelt vocal and big horn energy over driving drums. It's a real dancefloor heater and then the flip is 'Wasn't It You', a more soulful groover with lush backing vocals but still dynamic drums powering it onwards. This outfit's last single went on to become a much sought-after release that is now well spenny on Discogs so do not sleep on this limited follow up.

Review: It might be getting cold and dark and wet here in the UK but music will always be able to transport us to warmer, sunnier, happier climes. And so it is with this new 7", which includes a booklet, from Discodelic. It's a two tracker from Cizana and La Nueva Generation that is flame hot and bristling with energy - Cizana's 'She Sold Her Soul' kicks off with its joyous flutes, hand drums and percussive Latin grooves then La Nueva Generacion slow things down and up the brass with their carnivalesque Afro-funk workout 'Uhru Sasa'.

Review: Considering their Sessions LP was just one long single-track jam, this five-piece EP from the irrepressible Japanese jazzsters is genuinely super generous. Naturally, there's a theme throughout as the duo leap between parts, returning to soft organ melodic motifs and chord structures that are all built on the soft vocal harmonics of the original piece. Making references to Latin dynamics and contemporary electronic soul, it's yet another unique expedition from the C&C family. Much love.

Review: The Description Is Not The Described is a much anticipated debut solo release from the hotly tipped Nathaniel Cross. Rolling Stone Magazine once dubbed him The Quincy Jones Of Catford for his mad and diverse skills, and the arranger and trombone player has walls backed up that talk with action. He has recorded and performed with pop giants like Stormy, Emile Sande, Kano and Solange and worked on both Moses Body albums. on his own EP, he masterly draws on the rich heritage of black music from gospel to soul to hip hop and dancehall, but arranges them all in slick jazz styles.

Sombre Guitar (Star Dish latin remix)
Review: What a great Japanese only reissue! As far as we know this supreme jazz dance classic never came out as a single, apart from on a 12" sampler via the Counterpoint label 12 years back. The track itself was taken from the Creation One album on the USA label Thimble and can fetch several hundred pounds when you can actually find a copy! Tried and trusted by the jazz dance DJ elite, the track was a firm favourite with the likes of Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge during the heady days of legendary weekly sessions at Dingwalls. A great vocal and infectious vocal is underpinned by killer percussion and a memorable brass lines, while the Star Dish mix attempts to update the track with a somewhat heavier club feel. Nothing short of essential.

A Day In A Life (2:57)
Review: WallenBink is reissuing a serious clutch of essential jazz 7"s this month. Wolfgang Dauner is one of them and this marks the first time these tunes have ever been on an unedited 45 single made from audiophile-grade vinyl, with mastering by Grammy-winning engineer Sean Magee and new artwork authentically recreated on heavyweight gloss sleeves. The music goes beyond Dauner's usual remit and takes in elements of raga, psyche, and eastern melody that makes it all the more intoxicating. 'Sun Is Rising' is s trippy opener and 'A Day In The Life' is a Beatles cover stripped back to masterful minimal sounds.

Regards From Freddie Horowitz (4:39)
Review: The Dave Pike Set was a five-piece jazz band active for only four years from '68 to '72. But in that short time that manages seven albums, and had some standout single success. Two of their biggest - 1969's 'Mathar'/'I'm On My Way' - are repressed here on a 7" that will cost you upwards of L300 if you can find an original. There are some heavy sitar vibes on the a-side to start with, eventually making way for a strident 60s beat that is all psyched-out jazz stylings and raw drums. The flip is a much more after-dinner vibe, with harmonic keys setting a silky tone.

I Don't Fuck Around (6:19)
Review: This project stems from the mutual admiration between Daru Jones and Devonne "DJ" Harrison who, upon discovering their collaborations with Jack White, had the idea of blending rock with jazz. DJ Harrison's vintage keyboard skills and Daru's versatility made them perfect for such a rock-influenced project. Legendary guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, a longtime friend of Mr. Mandel, was ideal for the guitar role and after several years they finally got together to record this album in 2022. The result is a first 12" single, mastered at 45 rpm for exceptional sound. Here's hoping there will be more to come.

Review: Anyone who has heard DJ Marky do one of his "non D&B" sets will know that his love of funk, soul, disco and boogie is real, while there's far more classic Brazilian music in his record collection than some may expect. It makes sense then that he's been asked to provide the follow-up to DJ Format's Brazil 45s box set and pick some vintage carnival-ready gems of his own from Mr Bongo's bulging vaults. There are naturally some stone-cold classics present - see Jorge Ben's floor-slayer 'Take it Easy My Brother Charles' and the boogie-era smoothness of Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetta's 'Eva' - but also plenty of lesser-known samba and MPB gems stretched across the five "45s".

Review: Dreadsquad's latest single marks the first glimpse of an upcoming instrumental dub album and pays homage to a pivotal moment in world music history. In 2005, Jim Jarmusch's film Broken Flowers introduced global audiences to Ethiopian jazz, particularly through the hauntingly beautiful 'Yekermo Sew' by Mulatu Astatke, who is considered the father of Ethio-jazz. Now reimagined as a reggae dub track, Dreadsquad has replaced electronic elements with live instrumentation and worked with an international team of musicians. These two tunes are taken from the album and come on 7" for useful DJ deployment. Review: BDQ's next limited 7" is a superb three-way collab between Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity. Their long-lost version of classic dancer 'Jeannine' is powered by wandering basslines and swinging Hammond Organ chords that bring warmth to the free-flowing jazz vocals up top. Review: 'My Soul' is a jazz-dance giant from George Duke. Jerome Richardson and Luis Gasca also feature on this crucial 7" with the superb funky that is 'Au Right' on the flip. Both of these jams are taken from The Inner Source, a landmark album from George Duke back in 1971. It was way ahead of its time for the way the Duke paired electric experimentation with Latin percussion and African instrumentation. He did so while he was a pianist playing for Cannonball Adderley. This new 45rpm has been taken from the master tapes and pressed at Pallas so sounds superb.

Known for his late 70s jazz-fusion album Graffiti, Franzetti recorded Dedos after returning to Argentina from Mexico where he was musical director at Fermata International. Their Deeper Than Black EP is a magic one that draws on all forms of jazz, soul, Latin, bossa, funk and house to cook up broken beat explorations doused in sunshine and with one eye on the stars. Review: There's no doubt that Matthew Halsall is a modern British jazz great. Like the giants of jazz who came before him, Halsall is also prolific - a creative whirlwind who releases at least one album a year without fail. His latest release, The Temple Within, is not a full-length but rather a mini album - and one composed with his latest collective of Manchester-based musicians, during improvisations and rehearsals for their weekly residency at Yes. It's an utterly lovely four-tracker all told. It sees Halsall and his contributing musicians opt for a sultry, summery sound rooted in spiritual jazz and progressive jazz, with (very) occasional nods towards deep electronic music. From start to finish, it's a thing of great beauty.

Review: On his second limited-edition CD single/mini-album of 2022, Matthew Halsall has delivered a delightful four-tracker inspired by his concerns for humankind's changing relationship with nature and the spectre of climate change. As you'd expect with such inspirations, it's a highly emotive, bittersweet and melancholic affair, with fine contributions from not only the trumpeter himself, but also flautist Matt Cliffe and harpist Maddie Herbert. For proof, check the clips of the deep, slow-burn wonder that is 'Positive Activity', the meditative 'Yogic Flying' (where subtle Indian instrumentation catches the ear), and the dream-like spirituality of 'Upper Space'. Arguably best of all though is 'Changing Earth', a delicate but seemingly hopeful chunk of spiritual jazz brilliance that's one of Halsall's most endearing compositions to date.

While the latter two are generally better-known for their deep and sometimes tech-tinged house and ambient productions, the original mix of 'Watarese' (featured here on side B) is a dense, immersive jazz soundscape laden with evocative Japanese vocals, improvised piano, moody orchestration and definite nods towards vintage free-jazz. Spiritual Life supremo Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell provides the remix and, somewhat predictably, steals the show. His take is gently rhythmic, sun-splashed spiritual jazz full of hand percussion, fluid piano motifs and rubbery double bass.

Review: Colin Curtis Presents is dropping some real heat this month with a pair of fine fusion EPs including one from GeeW and now this one from JuJu. This is another excellent transmission from the forefront of the contemporary British nu-jazz scene by Roderick Stewart. 'Black Samba' is one of those nimble and ass-wiggling rhythms the is punctuated by big horns, funky chords, busy percussion and a cool sense of style. 'Musa' (Cumulative Collective rework) keeps the life-affirming Roy Ayers melodies going over more effortlessly funky bass and 'Cla Samba' (feat Josue Ferriera) and 'So Da Manha' bring more Brazilian vibes to this superb EP.

Review: Wonky meets jazz in this impressive new jazz mini-LP from Japan. Takuya Kuroda is a highly respected trumpeter and arranger born in Kobe, Japan and based in New York City. 'Midnight Crisp' is Takuya's seventh studio album, entirely self-produced and following 2020's highly acclaimed 'Fly Moon Die Soon'. Learning jazz in a higher education environment, he's reapplied his skills to a new solo outing here, blending with his one true loves, afrobeat and hip-hop. The ensuing album is one of myriad midnight moods, tempered by many a virtuosic and mournful piano, digitally-edited drum brush, and trilling trumpet from the mouth of Kuroda himself.

Get Up Featuring Vanessa Freeman (DJ Kawasaki 45 edit) (4:11)
Get Up (DJ Kawasaki Roy Vibestrumental mix) (3:35)
Review: Kyoto Jazz Massive's most recent album, the critically acclaimed Message From a New Dawn, was packed to the rafters with highlights, with their surprise collaboration with jazz-funk legend Roy Ayers, 'Get Up', arguably being the best of the lot. Here the track gets a deserved single release, albeit via two 45-friendly re-edits from Japanese scalpel fiend DJ Kawasaki. He subtly snips and chops the track on the A-side '45 Edit', finding room for both the various instrumental solos and vocal sections while keeping the original's focus and energy in-tact. Over on the flip he chooses to showcase Ayers' superb vibraphone solos, jettisoning the original version's vocals on an all-instrumental revision that's a genuine jazz-funk-goes-disco treat.

Review: Rindert Lammers' debut LP is a kaleidoscopic suite in five movements; pelican wingspans of twinkly, retentive but then also generous jazztronica, centring on two distinct themes: Japanese cinema and YouTube confessions. Japanese culture is seen through a grateful lens, as theatrical titans such as Kirin Kiki are homaged; the B1 especially is inspired by a poignant moment in the actor's portrayal of Hatsue Shibata in the 2018 film Shoplifters. Seemingly firstly inconsequential digital traces are lent an upscale gravitas, meanwhile, as a voice clip from a YouTube comment on an algorithmically boosted Hiroshi Yoshimura video evolves into the ride-embellished upswell 'Thank You Hiroshi Yoshimura'. Mastering the art of appreciation from afar, Lammers brings a mood of gobsmacked reverence for Japanese enviro jazz and its offshoots, suspending us over an endless realm of forms circa 1989.

The two 7"s are also being served up separately as is the case dee with 'The Christmas Waltz Edition' coming on festive green vinyl. Perfect for bringing warmth and joy to your seasonal celebrations, these are two short but super sweet sounds with intimate soul vocals on the title cut and on the flip, 'Love To Keep Me Warm' is a romantic sound with dainty piano chords and s subtle jazz styling.

Family (Birdland Love Theme) (4:52)
All I Do (4:34)
Review: This excellent 7" single dips into the archives of flautist Hubert Laws, offering up two rarities that date from 1981. On side A you'll find a superb live version of Laws' then recent single 'Family', which first featured on the Japanese-only LP Aurex Jazz Festival: Super Fusion Jam. A languid jazz-funk number featuring Laws' younger sister Eloise on vocals and plenty of fluid solos from the man himself, it's argualy a better version than the one originally featured on the 1980 album of the same name. Over on the flip you'll find a previously unissued recording of Hu Eloise and the rest of their top-notch fusion band giving their interpretation of Stevie Wonder's 'All I Do'. It's as fresh, breezy and emotion rich as you'd expect, with Eloise Laws' delivering a brilliant lead vocal.

Alfredito Linares Y Su Salsa Star - "Mi Nuevo Ritmo" (3:26)
Review: Last year Rocafort Records delivered a rather good retrospective of the early works of Peruvian band-leader Alfredito Linares, an unheralded star of Latin jazz and later salsa and boogaloo who made some seriously good music in the late 1960s and '70s. This sequel, which features six scintillating tracks stretched across three seven-inch singles, tells the next chapter of the story, following Linares' relocation to Cali, Colombia in the early '70s. What's an offer is a heavy, club-ready mixture of righteous boogaloo - all infectious grooves, loose-limbed South American percussion, breathless group vocals and rising, big band style horns - and breezy salsa workouts, all of which hits the spot and then some.

Review: Dynamite Cuts continue doing good justice to the label's obsession with Jon Lucien, the soul and funk crooner who eluded overt popularity but refused to let that crimp his style. Four of his most timeless classics here get the reissue treatment, and are compiled into one EP, traversing the lengthy ranges of b-boy breaks ('A Sunny Day'), percussive soca ('Ghetto Song'), post-highlife prayers ('Listen Love'), and everything in between.

Review: James Mason had a voice like no other and the ability to project it loud and proud. Thanks to the likes of Floating Points and Red Greg his music has been brought back to the fore for a fresh generation and while his 'I Want Your Love' will always be his biggest tune, he has plenty more up his sleeve. Four of them feature on this reissued 7" by Dynamic Cuts: 'Sweet Power Your Embrace' is impassioned jazz funk with big horns and bigger vocals, 'Free' is a tight high speed funk groove and 'I've Got My Eyes On You' is more high octane jazz-funk then 'Slick City' slows it down to a more groovy, hip swinging pace.

Review: The elusive Minus Group was a mysterious outfit that was headed up by the multi-instrumentalist Enzo Minuti who is also known as Ezy Minus. They recorded this superbly good psyched-out and dubbed up masterpiece in 1981 and here both sides offer the same tune in different arrangements. There is more of an afro vibe to the opener with great sax and synth phrasings and vocals from a choir that are weirdly processed. On the flip is a more downtempo mix for Carribean and chilled out vies. They are both versatile and sure to liven up any club.

Review: Belgian beatmaker Marc Moulin is a master of the downtempo groove but shows a different side here with two tracks alongside Kiosk. First up is the busy and jazz laden 'Mona Call', a bristling workout with dancing drums and noodling chords that are wholly expressive and free. 'Waterproof' on the flip carries on in the same vein, with big horns bursting though the arrangement and the live drums offering a prickly and relentless rhythm. Two high power tunes that will enliven any set and have jazz fans moving and grooving.

Review: Japanese outfit Nautilus offer-up Hammond-rich jazz-funk and superb covers of the classics on a steady basis. They dropped their Revival album back in January and now return to a tasty 45 with some easy-going late-night jazz lunge sides on the A-side. 'Half A Minute (feat Mizuki Kamata)' comes with fresh and clean drums and a superlative bass line that's warm and funk while airy chords and a crystal clear soul vocal up top finishes it in style. 'Dirty Old Bossa Nova' has the signature Hammond sounds this band is known for with a noodling groove and curious melodies all offering whimsical escape over subtly shuffling samba rhythms.

Review: Nautilus' second European tour is just kicking off and now, ahead of their new album Pacific Voyage, a special 7" single has emerged. This gem features a track that didn't make the album cut due to time constraints but now shines and has you wondering just how good the album. The A-side has a jazzy rendition of Leon Ware's soulful classic 'Why I Came To California,' sung by Californian vocalist Eki Shola and supported by Denise M'Baye. Their fresh vocals, combined with Nautilus' vibrant instrumentation, create a contemporary take on the original. The B-side features a funky remix of Bobby Caldwell's 'What You Won't Do For Love' by Soul Supreme that showcases rising Japanese star Ryuto Kasahara.

Review: Nimbus was a local student band in Mecosta, Michigan, and was well regarded in the world of self released AOR, mellow fusion and blue eyed soul back in the 1980s. This 7" is take from Children of the Earth, the band's only album and one that was privately pressed in limited quantities so is not widely available. P-Vibe have the full rights to it and boy are we glad because 'Nezarai' is a joyous bit of jazz that doesn't in any way sound 40 years old. '
Free Yourself' is more deep, with glowing Rhodes and plenty of positive forces in the drums, vocals and keys.

Review: This is another fine addition to the Four Flies 45 series: it is a first-ever 7" taken from one of the few soundtracks that legendary producer and composer Paolo Ormi ever wrote (namely a rather underwhelming parody of Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam). He is best known for his mix of Italian funk, disco and library music, both for underground labels but also stars like Raffaella Carra. All three of the instrumentals here are seriously funky - two of them have actually been put out before as part of this label's hard-to-find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.
