Cat: RE 27. Rel: 23 Oct 20
Alternate Current - "Borrowed Language" (6:22)
Dreadmaul & Tobe:n - "Homunculus" (6:08)
LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.

Review: Following up releases by the likes of Mark Seven, Florist and Cygnus, Ari Goldman's Washington D.C-based World Building returns with this awesome varioust artist compilation. Neighborhood Watch Volume One features a wide selection of moods and grooves: NativeSun vs JamesBangura get stuck into some dark dubstep on 'Demon Mode' much like The Khan does later on the deeply meditative 'Part Of Me (Ode To DC), while Sami gets their swing on with the classic house of 'Marty & Jack', Juana's tunneling 'It's Low' gives you a dose of heroin house and over on the flip Max D gets deep down and dirty on 'No Snare'.

SO S/NJ - "Cadillac Dog" (3:32)
MS/HT - "Brown Kijin" (5:10)
SO S/NJ - "Torrid Affair VIP" (4:08)
Review: The inspired hook and undeniable clout of the Brothers concept keeps on powering through with this latest round of collaborative tracks. The energy level stays high, the overall sound dirty, and the ideas thick and fast. RW & TJ take to the ring first, slapping lurid synth splatters back and forth over a jackhammer stutter of a beat, creating just the right kind of stupid and not making any bones about it. SO S and NJ meanwhile get into twitchy electro experimentation and slovenly kick drums on "Cadillac Dog", before MS and HT offer up a lighter kind of machine funk that takes its cues from the Drexciya school of fish. SO S and NJ get to play together again on "Torrid Affair VIP" and once more the broken rhythms come in lopsided while plenty of red lining material is on hand to keep things pumping where it counts.

Soul Recovery Beat
Review: Lauri Reponen is Teakup, an electronic artist based in Columbus, Ohio who has dropped only two EPs before now - one in 2018 and one in 2002. He now steps out with his own self-titled new label and an impressive first release that shows off his artful take on techno. 'Vapor Or Floating Stone' opens up with broken beats and clattering sounds next to light, suspensory chords that bring calm to the chaos. 'Sublimation Station' again pairs busy, whirring machine sounds with lush synths that contrast nicely and 'Phase Loss & Pad' has glitchy broken beats and churning metallic texture under light-emitting synth work through which a rhythm eventually appears. Closer 'Soul Recovery Beat' completes this inventive EP with more deft designs.

Abstraction (4:29)
Review: Experienced French fusionist Paul Tenebre has become a firm favourite of the WNCL Recordings boss man Bob Bharma (AKA West Norwood Cassette Library) because this is his third Ep on the label since 2017. It is another brain frying, frothy mix of brutal techno and heavy bass that kicks off with the powerful 'Sub Methods.' Elsewhere 'Hybrids' ships into a more subtle, stripped back rhythm that is fizzing with sinewy synth modulations. There is then the dark and ruching sound of 'Wum' and hyperspeed rave of 'Prototype' before 'Abstraction' closes down on a more atmospheric bit of ambient design.

Swimming With Patsy
Cat: POLY 004. Rel: 12 Feb 16
With Patsy (7:42)
Swimming (7:53)
Review: It certainly feels as if Tessela and Truss are making up for lost time with Poly Kicks. Tessela's all-conquering Hackney Parrot heralded the label's arrival back in early 2013, but Poly Kicks was put on hold until late last year when a fresh 12" from the UK producer announced its return. After a Haroon Mizra-helmed deviation into the first of a series of locked groove releases, Tessela lines up the fourth Poly Kicks 12" with the swift one-two punch to the guts of bass bins everywhere that is Swimming With Dance. Up top, "With Patsy" finds Tessela expertly constructing a tribalist swerver punctuated by an endlessly messed with vocal loop. "Swimming" will be just as deadly in the club!

Review: Livity Sound crops back up again, this time with a little but charming EP made between first time collaborators Azu Tiwaline and Al Wootton. Hailing from Tunisia and London respectively, we hear both cities channeled into each producer's now laser-focused, hotly fused sound world. 'Nine Points' is the EP's refreshingly swaying techno-into-future-garage bit, while 'Last Scene' takes us into dubbier and more ambient backroads.

Latitude (7:51)
Longitude (7:20)
Review: Sub Basics is back on his own fledgling label Temple of Sound - but under a new alias. As Tommy Basics he leads into a fresh house sound but still serves it up with plenty of his textbook bass-heavy low ends. 'Latitude' is a bubbly groover with dusty drums and fleshy basslines that get you moving and warmed up. 'Longitude' is even deeper, with smeared dub chords and woody percussive hits peppering the laid-back and inviting groove. Two stylish sounds from this versatile producer.

Review: Toupaz is a new name on our radar but he'll stay firmly on it after this release on forward-thinking London label, Well Street. The EP kick-starts with a fusion of techno, bass and club rhythms spliced with brilliantly bubbly toms & synths that fall down the face of broken beats. The flip side explores a new take on UK funky with whirring machines and fractured vocals, whilst the closer 'Maudlin Lakitu' features the most experimental and skeletal rhythms of the project.

Basement Traxx (Lando remix)
Review: Trikk's third release - and second for ManMakeMusic - is the Basement Traxx EP. The title track sees skittling rim shots, a punchy bassline and thumping tom drums pound away in a production that teeters dangerously close to Boddika & Joy O's "Mercy", while "Rounded" introduces French-housey chords and Brawther like beats and percussion to the EP. Lando - the artist formally know as Lando Kal - drops his first remix and production as his new moniker by reducing the repetition of "Basement Traxx" and adding some swung and swaggered groove which gives a grungier musicality to Trikk's otherwise linear mix.

Metamorphism (7:36)
Coma (7:15)
Fraction (5:34)
Spectre (4:46)
Review: Beatrice M's amusingly entitled Bait label has in fact become exactly that - very desirable to those who know. Its latest is a four tracker that serves as a taster of a forthcoming digital album by Trois-Quarts Taxi System. Behind the moniker is Eloi Petillon, a versatile producer, DJ and live act who has a knack for blurring genre lines. On this one, they mix up elements of dubstep, techno and d&b into soundscapes that are cerebral, hypnotic and psychedelic. Each one is made from futuristic sound design, field recordings and intricate polyrhythms: 'Metamorphism' warped, linear, deft and brilliant deep techno. 'Coma' is more busy, 'Fraction' has wispy synths and a sparse soundscape and 'Spectre' is a fizzy, skeletal sound that tickles the brain.

Black Dog (feat Luru) (5:14)
Headshot (Lokane remix) (4:38)
Mass Production (7:27)
Review: Nervous Horizon co-boss TSVI takes the reins for the label's second outing and it's every bit as stark, dark and futuristic as Wallwork & RZR's debut. Sitting somewhere between Grime, dubstep and Detroit techno, each of the four originals punches with a titanium robotic first: "Set You Free" is a scratchy, rough-ended glitch stepper, "Headshot" slaps with sheet metal bass/kick shots on an industrial strength level, "Black Dog" takes the rave deep inside the molten metal wells of a steel foundry while "Mass Production" reminds us of the roots with a squat party style slice of insistent techno. For added pleasure Lokane has provided a slightly lighter (but still wholly paranoid) twist on "Headshot". Ugly.

Review: AD 93 is fast approaching a century of releases and helping them on their way is this fresh 12" from TSVI and DJ Plead. It brings plenty of bouncy to the party with elastic opener 'Triple It' layering up big kicks and hits with playful bass. 'Swanky' is another blend of Afro rhythms and UK funky, fizzing synths and heavy bass and 'Gallop' picks up the pace with a more lithe and loopy groove. 'Breath Work' flips the script with Eastern string melodies and percussive beats and 'Twos & Fours' is a fourth and final fantastically inventive sound that will stand out in any set for all the right reasons.

Review: "Be odd, be future, be not too serious" is the official tagline of ANUS Recordings and with a name such as theirs it's clear the fledgling Rotterdam operation don't take themselves that serious! Amusingly named they may be, but ANUS Recordings clearly know what constitutes a good release, turning to the ever excellent Tuff Sherm for this Solvent Dreams 10". There was a time when Tuff Sherm was considered the less prolific alias of Dro Carey aka Australian producer Eugene Hector but under the TS banner he's been in imperious form this year, issuing beat tapes as well as appearing on TTT, Merok and Clandestine Traxx. Solvent Dreams continues his run of form, laying down four tracks of grizzled techno abstractions filled with desiccated sampledelica with "Navigator & Hostage" and B Side hugger "Guirow" standing out.

Missing In Action (3:50)
Review: Given that they debuted on Livity Sound last year, it's perhaps unsurprising that Two Shell's take on dance music is fiendishly polyrhythmic and rooted in the sub-heavy pulse of contemporary British bass music. "N35", their follow-up on fresh imprint Mainframe Audio, is equally as impressive. The title track is particularly potent, with the pair peppering a loose-limbed rhythm track reminiscent of Roska with tight bass stabs and cut-up vocals straight out of the Todd Edwards playbook. Flipside "Missing In Action" sees them explore dreamier pastures, with spine-tingling choral vocal samples rising and falling above a dense, polyrhythmic tribal beat. It's ear catching, though we'd argue that the more sparse and tightly focused A-side is superior.

Review: The mysterious UK duo Two Shell continue to disrupt techno conservatism with their woozy, unpredictable brew. This time on Mainframe Audio. Non-linear, disarming yet soft-focus and awash with different textures and instruments, we're eased and teased between hypnotic, lo-fi flavours... the percussive insistence and dubby ripples of 'Memory', the intergalactic big beat of 'Mainframe' and stuttering cosmic moombah of 'Ghosts' are just three of the provocative and intriguing highlights. Iconic.

Review: Two Shell are well known for following in the mega-produced techno tradition of Overmono or Objekt. But as we all know, they set themselves well apart for their inclusion of well known R&B and pop vocal samples, easily blowing their fellow tech-heads out the water with an extra pinch of accessibility. 'Home' is a heater that has bubbled about for a while now on IOM and Reddit, curiously sampling CHINAH's 'Away From Me' and its B-side 'No Reply' sampling Dani Sylvia's 'Zachariah' - two songs which we'd wager don't need official sample clearance. Filtrating in and out of weighty downtempo-techno stomps, Two Shell capture modern hypertechno at its finest.

Review: The excellent and stylistically varied Banoffee Pies label comes through with another of is talent-packed various artist releases here. Yushh opens with churning, bass heavy melodic techno that floats you high up in the atmosphere, Kincaid's 'Inside' (feat J Caesar) is an eerie minimal piece with ambient synths and a percolating post-jungle rhythm, then Tristan Arp's 'Circling The Abyss' peppers a skeletal beat with toms and hits to make you move. PinballSpider and Johnny Hunter close out with a pair of rhythmic techno tunes that are utterly futuristic.

Review: Software's first release of 2014 sees the label move into further uncharted territory, with Death After Life, the debut album of Chicago-based artist Ryan McRyhew, otherwise known as Thug Entrancer. Relocating from Denver to Chicago in 2011, the seclusion and proximity to Chicago's rich dance music heritage afforded him the time to create what the label describe as "in-depth and unconditional music" recomposing both Chicago juke and house. Nominally fitting in with the current trend for stark, monochromatic hardware productions, with a "pitch-dark motif" running through the album, Death After Life was mainly recorded "on the fly with very few overdubs and zero reliance on sampled sources." Unlike the woozy textures of last year's excellent Huerco S LP on the label, Death After Life is a noise-influenced album of techno and experimental beats marked out by its high fidelity sound.
