Review: Over the last couple of years, author Justin Hopper has joined folk musician Sharron Kraus and vintage synthesizer fetishists Belbury Poly on stage to narrate sections of his 2017 novel "Old Weird Albion" - a "poetical, autobiographical and psycho-geographical account" of his experiences at Chanctonbury Ring in West Sussex. This album is, in effect, an extended re-recording of those performances, with Hopper reading choice excerpts from his book over an inspired fusion of traditional folk tropes - think recorder, flute, and drifting female vocals - atmospheric field recordings and 1970s style electronic instrumentation. Given that these synths have largely been used to re-record tudor style Baroque tunes (think "Greensleeves" and you're close), the results are not only delightfully eccentric but also admirably unique.

Review: In the early-to-mid 1980s, children's television was decidedly odd. Arguably the strangest show of all was The Moomins, an animated puppet show based on a series of Finnish children's books. When the original show was re-purposed for UK TV, it was re-dubbed into English, with the addition of a fabulously psychedelic soundtrack from post-punk synthesizer enthusiasts Graeme Miller and Steve Shill. Here, Finders Keepers' has gathered together the best of the duo's work for the series. Expect early analogue synthesizer sounds, bizarrely folksy instrumentation, trippy noises, and an array of fragile melodies. It's weird, all right, but also really rather good.

Review: Another one of Ennio Morricone's acclaimed spaghetti Western film scores, reissued by Recording Arts Italy. Once Upon A Time In The West is most likely Sergio Leone's most famous film after A Fistful Of Dollars and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly; Morricone had already lent his compositional hand to both of the former and was by this point a resident favourite in Leone's filmmaking cabinet. This original score was begun before principal photography had even taken place, demonstrating Leone's trust in Morricone to produce a great soundtrack without the need for a visual aid. Leone, in fact, was famously known to have played Morricone's soundtrack during filming, which enabled the embedding of Morricone's polar sound (from haunting to jaunty) in the scenes as they were shot.

Review: Ryuichi Sakamoto has penned many soundtracks over the years, but few are as stirring, tender and emotionally laden as his soundtrack to 2021 Chinese movie 'Love After Love'. The film is described as an "erotic romance drama" set in the 1930s, about a young woman who travels to Hong Kong to further her education, but ends up working for her aunt, seducing "rich and powerful men". Sakamoto's score mirrors the unfurling, highly emotive drama, using reverb-laden piano pieces and string-laden orchestral movements to wring maximum emotion from each scene. It's a brilliant score all told and undoubtedly one of the former Yellow Orchestra Man's greatest works for cinema - and that's saying something!

Review: This 17xCD set is a sprawling testament to Lalo Schifrin's genius, charting his journey as a composer who brought jazz, Latin rhythms, and classical grandeur into the heart of Hollywood. 'Mission: Impossible' still brims with tension, its taut rhythm as sharp as ever, while 'Bullitt' is all about brooding jazz-fusion cool. Then there's 'Enter the Dragon', where Eastern motifs meet cinematic swagger. Even lesser-known gems like the haunting 'Kelly's Heroes' theme reveal his knack for blending intricate orchestration with emotional pull. A deep dive into these discs is less a passive listen and more a front-row seat to cinematic history being redefined.

Review: Belgica is a new movie about two Belgian brothers who run a club of the same name in Ghent. Who better to provide the soundtrack, then, than two Belgian brothers who reside in Ghent. Despite the myriad band names name-checked in the track list (each of whom is seen or heard performing in the film), each of the 16 tracks was written and produced by Soulwax, sometimes in association with guest musicians and actors. It's a neat trick, and one that leads to an impressively eclectic mixture of songs and styles, from post-punk era industrial dub and jangly West-coast indie, to minimal wave, krautrock, dub disco and frazzled post-boogie synth-pop.

Review: A couple of years back, singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens composed the score for a dance work by choreographer Justin Peck. Entitled "The Decalogue" - which apparently means "The Ten Commandments" - the piece was debuted by the New York City Ballet in May 2017. It's taken a while, but now a recording of the solo piano piece, as performed by pianist Timo Andres, is finally available. It's split into ten parts that Stevens says, "sound like etudes in the Romantic-Modernist tradition, as if prompted by Debussy". In practice, that means some quiet and contemplative passages, some jaunty sections and a whole load of superb, fast-fingered playing by the hugely talented Andres.
