Jb Green & Band - "Time" (5:55)
Review: US label Now Again follows up the success of its recent Forge Your Own Chains compilation with another, and this time one that has never before be available on vinyl like this. It features a fine selection of small run private presses that are all incredibly hard to find or long out of print. The bands behind the music range from legends of the krautrock scene to Turkish teenagers to Icelandic prog-rock outfits, prison funk ensembles and even the uncle of E-40. It's real, raw and full of plenty of visceral funk thrills made between 1970 and 1975 but suitable for all occasions.

Review: If Music presents: You Need This! An Introduction to the Handson Family from the legends at BBE is a must-have double album that highlights the rich heritage of Black music, not that we really needed reminding of course. Compiled by London DJ duo the Handson Family, this collection features tracks from plenty of key artists such as Emanative, Ty, Cecilia Stalin, and Xantone Blacq and across all 14 songs, the diverse sounds and styles of recent Black music are laid bare and offer an educational experience in Black music genres while also capturing the essence of the duo's influential DJ sets and radio shows.

The album kicks off with the rare 12" mix of Samuel Jonathan Johnson's wonderful 'You' and includes previously unreleased gems from Glenn Jones, Earth, Wind & Fire and Gladys Knight & The Pips. Highlights include Glenn's 'Share My Love' and Gladys's timeless 'How Deep Is Your Love' as well as EWF's 'Club Foot,' all of which were omitted from their original albums. Side two features Phyllis Hyman's 'Forever With You' and downtempo classics like Tyrone Davis's 'Never Stopped Loving You' and The Dells' 'Somebody's Gotta Move' round out an exceptional compilation.

Lloyd Price - "Music-music" (3:56)
Review: For hardcore soul fans, the tax scam label TSG Records is legendary. Finding original copies of the tunes it put out is all but impossible these days, especially for an affordable price, and so this new collection helps make having them all to hadn't a reality. It's is a one-stop shop for top-drawer rare groves, sensual sounds and fiery funk sounds that were all originally recorded around the ends of 70s in the United States. Ricardo Marrero & The Group opens up with the steamy South American sounds of 'Babalonia' and Lloyd Price shuts the whole thing down with the more swirling, airy and feel-good summer soul vibes of 'Music-music' and in between are plenty of gems.

In its heyday, it became a hub for soulful music with its flagship band the Commands scoring a hit in 1966 with 'No Time For You.' Their success led to 20 more singles over 30 months and Epstein's inclusive studio welcomed a diverse racial mix of Texas talent which in turn created a melting pot of sound. This collection reflects that across 28 gems from groups like the Tonettes, Little Jr. Jesse & the Tear Drops and Bobby Blackmon & His Soul Express all exploring different soul niches.

Review: A year after the first superb volume, The Key To Our Love Vol.2 again dedicates itself to the sweetest soul sounds of black and brown musicians from days gone by. The label say that each release is put together in direct collaboration with the creators, which is also important practice. And so to the sounds - they come from the late 60s onwards and were all put out on private press indie labels so have remained rather obscure. There is heart-aching material like Andre & Zero Plus's 'Sparkle In A Woman's Eye' with its sumptuous strings and vocal harmonies and more sentimental lullabies like Fred Moss's 'I'll Always Love You.' Perfection.

Review: Symphonical's The Key To Our Love series has proven exceedingly popular with soul lovers and this third volume shows there is still plenty of mileage in it yet. As always there is an in-depth exploration of black and brown American artists here who are the foundations of the sound. Most of those featured will be obscure to many - but not for long, as their music makes a lasting impression. There is the vulnerable lo-fi sound of Laurene Lavallis's 'Love Don't Change,' Delbert & The Stewart Sensation's sentimental swooner 'How Far Can Our Love Go?' and Carrie Riley & The Fascinations offer up some lovely harmonies on 'Living In A Lonesome House Without You' amongst many other standouts.

Review: Barely a week goes by without another Soul Jazz compilation, and never are they anything else than superb. This time out we're cerated to another collection of tunes from Kingston's seminal Studio One, but rather than the straight up reggae we're used to, it is more of a melting pot of funk, soul, jazz and dub. All of these tunes were written in the 1970s under the watchful eye of studio chief and producer Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd and there is a wealth of deep, sunny, funk cuts that have more than stood the test of time.

Review: Jazzman recently served up a big and freaky old collection of Halloween themed jazz sounds from Greasy Mike. Now the venerated digger and collector opens up his archives once more for another deep dive, this time under the heading of 'Shipwrecked On A Tropical Island.' As such these are Afro-tinged jazz sounds with shimmering steel drums and gently breaking waves. There are Afro-Cuban spinners like Phyllis Branch's 'Babalu' and samba shufflers full of soul. An epic and escapist collection that takes you to another world.

Review: Loving On The Flip Side compiles overlooked ballads from the flip sides of funk 45s in the Now-Again and Truth and Soul vaults, all presented in the same format as the Soul Cal anthology. This collection showcases incredible music that pairs heavy funk with sweet soul to create a sound the label calls "sweet funk." The journey began nearly a decade ago with the discovery of the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy's unique two-sided single which sparked a search that led to their full inclusion in this anthology. The process unearthed other soulful gems and now culminates in an essential exploration of black American creativity and musical innovation.

Review: Williamsburg-based Truth & Soul Records is fast becoming one of the most reliable sources of modern soul and revivalist deep funk. Should you be unfamiliar with their output - and you should be, given that they set up shop in 2003 - this double LP trawl through the label's bulging back catalogue should be an essential purchase. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the Cuban and Caribbean influenced instrumental brilliance of Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band's "Pimp", and the stripped-back deep soul of Beau Williams' "I'll Be Home Soon", to the raw, Hammond-heavy 60s jazz-funk of The Fabulous 3's "Night Bird" and fuzzy analogue afro-funk of Zafari's "King Masuru".

This compilation features a mixture of previously released gems and unheard material from the label's growing roster of artists. Highlights are plentiful throughout, with our picks including the heartfelt, piano-sporting brilliance of 'Nobody's Clown' by Lost Yesterdays, the Motown style stomp of Jason Joshua's 'Language of Love', the close harmony bliss of Thee Sacred Souls' 'Will I See You Again' and the slow-burn sweetness of the Altons' EP-closing 'Tangled Up in You'. Review: The Colour Purple is one of those films that went against the odds in the wrong way - the second adaptation of Alice Walker's novel about a Black couple living in the Deep South around the turn of the 20th Century, it built on a legacy of acclaimed literature and cinema (Steven Spielberg's 1985 film), came with a strong cast and had $100million spent on it. Yet, after its release in 2023, despite great reviews and multiple award nominations, it grossed just $67million at the global box office. Musicals aren't for everyone, of course, although it's hard to find fault here. Songs range from super dramatic, almost tribal and certainly stage-filling epics, through to kitchen sink soul, roots, blues, R&B, hip hop, and power pop, and listening through even without the visual focus, leaves a big, long-lasting impression.

Review: Numero Group is one of our top labels and it is albums like this which make it so. Eccentric Soul: The Saadia Label is collection of 15 of Saadia's funkiest and most deep and soulful jams from the years 1968 to 1970. It comes from talented names like Pearl Dowell, Joey Gilmore, Little Beaver and Frank Williams' Rocketeers and is a great source of gold for Das but also sample diggers. It is 20 years since the label did their first volume of the long-running Eccentric Soul series but all these years later it still bangs.

Review: Eccentric Soul: The Tragar & Note Labels is yet another superb journey into the lesser-known realms of soul music curated by one of our faves, the Numero Group. This particular compilation unearths rare gems from the Tragar and Note labels and offers a glimpse into the vibrant soul scenes of the 1960s and 1970s. From raw and gritty performances to polished and sophisticated arrangements, each track tells a unique story of love, loss, and perseverance. With soulful vocals, infectious grooves, and lush instrumentation, the album captures the essence of a bygone era while remaining relevant and compelling to contemporary listeners. Essentially, it's a treasure trove of forgotten classics waiting to be rediscovered.

Review: The Wiz is a vibrant urban adaptation of the classic musical turned spooky-as-hell movie The Wizard of Oz, and it is set in Queens, New York, rather than the deepest Kansas as was the original. Featuring a talented Black cast, the musical stars iconic artists like Diana Ross, Nipsey Russell, Michael Jackson, and Quincy Jones and was a huge success. The soundtrack, certified Gold by the RIAA, was just as much of a hit and now it arrives on vinyl. The album includes hit singles such as 'You Can't Win,' 'Ease on Down the Road' and 'A Brand New Day.'

Review: Soul Jazz Records' Delta Swamp Rock Volume 2 delves into the musical fusion of country, rock, and soul in the American South of the 1960s and early 1970s. Southern rock's rise in the 1970s, led by The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, created a unique sound blending country, rock, and black music, reshaping white southern working-class youth identity. The roots of this movement trace back to the legendary Muscle Shoals, Alabama, where white studio musicians and r&b legends like Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett collaborated. The release captures that time and includes an extensive book, photographs, interviews and all on lovely double vinyl.

Review: Soul4Real returns to southern roots with a collection of 11 tracks from legendary names Malaco, Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and Alarm Records. In the 1970s and 1980s, Malaco in Mississippi and Muscle Shoals Sound in Alabama were pivotal in shaping southern soul as Alarm Records in Louisiana added its own unique contributions to the scene. This album shines a light on that great time and opens with Dorothy Moore's classic 'Girl Overboard' followed by stellar performances from male singers including Bobby Bland and King Floyd. Three tracks debut on vinyl, with Jimmy Jules' 'Having A Little Talk With Love' one of those standouts to be making its first appearance.

Review: The record Store Day releases are coming thick and fast for 2024 and this is a gem in amongst them. It is said that the so-called "Golden Age of Southern Soul" lasted from about 1962 to 1975, after which point it was disco that shot to prominence and took all the headlines. Although the ensuing fusion of country, gospel, and r&b from the legendary Memphis and Muscle Shoals in the '60s appeared groundbreaking, southern soul drew from diverse influences. Horn lines from Louisiana's swamp pop, blues' lyrical themes, country music's melodies, and profound inspiration from black churches all contributed. As part of the 'History of Soul' series, this LP uncovers southern soul's musical roots with insightful notes by John Ridley, so prepare to be captivated by a truly authentic narrative and electrifying sounds.

Review: Like the two previous volumes, Volume Three of this series is another beautiful compilation that digs deep into some of the most obscure and emotive soul ballads from the Chicano and blue-eyed soul genres' heyday. This wonder album continues to uncover hidden gems and passionate performances that span decades and have aged to perfection. Review: Since its inception in 2020, Kunimondo Takiguchi's City Music Tokyo compilation series has emerged as one of the most authoritative and reliable sources of 'city pop' gems - in part because he traditionally looks beyond the style's 1980s heyday and includes older and newer songs that fit into the celebrated style's colourful and Western pop-influenced aesthetic. There's naturally plenty of goodness to be found across the latest edition, subtitled 'Anagram'. The plentiful highlights include the joyous, boogie-era disco swell of Ami Ozaki's 'Love Is Easy', the quirky, big band-sporting eccentricity of 'Maya Maya Beach' by Yuko Kanai, the slow-motion reggae-pop warmth of Seiko Ito's 'Nagisa No Unlucky Boys' and the low-slung wonder that is Parachute's 'Kowloon Daily'.

Each one is set to include what they deem to be "an essential collection of tracks" that they hope offer fair representation of a number of key musical movements and genres from across the 80s. The first volume presented the best in HI-NRG and POP and this one, a double album, focusses on Soul & Disco. All the names you'd expect are here from Prince to Daryl Hall & John Oates, Loose Ends to Rufus & Chaka Khan, so it is a useful one indeed.

Blending funk, soul, jazz, pop and Latin influences, this genre-defying band has remained a cornerstone of Los Angeles's scene for over five decades.

Review: PM Warson's latest album, A Little More Time via Legere Recordings, builds on his reputation as a standout in modern r&b. It is his third album and one that broadens his 60s-inspired vision. While not a complete departure from his r&b roots, it ventures into a range of styles and moods with a vintage sonic palette that will capture the hearts and minds of series soul heads. Recorded at London's famous analogue studio Lightship 95, A Little More Time features 10 original tracks that blend live performance energy with refined songwriting and production and the title track, which was also the lead single, exemplifies the album's blend of vintage pop and soul.

It is a sublime album of blue-eyed soul with overtones of country and Americana that make it all the more evocative and escapist. The songwriting is reflective, the musicianship is tight, the melodies impressive and the vocals effortlessly captivating. The NuNorthern Soul label has been serving up these sorts of nuggets and obscurities for over a decade now but this is right up there with the best of them.

Review: Trinidad's Wild Fire was a popular local group that formed in the 70s and disbanded in 1985. They amassed plenty of varied tunes after their name change from the Sparks, a name they had as far back as 1962. They were a house band at clubs like Disco Tracks and Upper Level so knew how to get a party going with their hot mix of Caribbean sounds, disco and funk. This Dance Hits album is a great collection of their more dance-friendly material. Some are slow burners like 'Check It Out' which brings racial issues to the fore and the more sunny funkers like 'The Rebels.'

It is a first-ever reissue for this much sought-after album and it arrives just in time for summer, which is when it sounds best, some 43 years after it was first self-released back in 1980 on their own self-titled label. This is the best of the four albums they released - a warm and immersive blend of funk, soul and disco. .

Review: Cassandra Wilson originally released Blue Light 'til Dawn in 1993 on Blue Note. Gathering together selected covers of blues and rock classics, Wilson and her band turn them to sultry, smoky jazz pieces with an evocative, late-night mood. From Robert Johnson and Joni Mitchell to Ann Peebles and Van Morrison, there are some heavy hitters covered here, but don't overlook the original title track. Amongst everything else it shows off Gib Wharton's stunning pedal steel guitar, which lends itself to this moody hue Wilson and her cohorts conjure so effectively.

The album compiles live performances from various radio shows, each of which showcases Winehouse's soulful voice and magnetic stage presence, and all recorded between 2004 and 2009. The sessions feature stripped-back renditions of her iconic tracks like 'Rehab' and 'Love Is A Losing Game' as well as covers that highlight her deep musical roots in jazz and soul. This is a fine behind-the-scenes look at the great artistry and emotion of one of the greats of the last 50 years.

The album now gets reissued and commemorates a milestone in Amy's career as well as a chance to relive the magic of her timeless sound.

Review: The late, great and still sorely missed Amy Winehouse performed one of her famously absorbing live shows at Presqu'île de Malsaucy, Belfort, France for the Eurockeennes de Belfort Festival on June 29th 2007. Four years before her death, it was when she was quite possibly in the form of her life, before her battles with addiction and mental health woes truly took hold and she was able to dig into her emotional reserves and translate that through the mic. That means her renditions of the likes of her own classic tracks 'Back To Black', 'Valerie' and 'Rehab' have rarely sounded better.

Amen Brother (extended mix) (2:50)
