Review: Brooklyn record distributor Atypical-dopeness offer the next edition in Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs series. Following a four-tracker of largely unnamed tracks released in 2020, Iboga continues the series, this time with an iterative avatar to top up Claussell's ever-moving house continuum. Claussell's output has lately taken on an ancestral turn, influenced by the hallucinations caused by chewing the roots of an iboga plant, a chemico-spiritual fixture of initiation ceremonies found across Central Africa (whether Claussell actually did take ibogaine isn't clear). What we do know is that, in dialogue with his heritage, Claussell found himself inspired by these initiatory rituals and so set about producing this eleven-track heart-rouser, fusing the overdubbed recorded sounds of Gabon, Cameroon and Congo with his own summative, spiritual, salubrious house sound.

Review: Mysterious UK music collective Sault are now, rather amazingly, onto their 11th studio full-length album. Acts Of Faith keeps faithful to their terrific blend of deep soul, funk and modern gospel, and yet their collective identity remains elusive despite many a Mercury and MOBO garnered over the years. A core virtue of theirs is to sidestep industry pressures and rules in favour of a rawer expression in moods of spiritual uplift, and Acts Of Faith is no exception, manifesting without (much) PR fanfare. From the driving, hangout pysch-funk of 'I Look For You' to the aseptic spaghetti groove 'Soul Clean', not to mention the closing clasp 'Pray For Me' - replete with wide, intervallic string leaps reminiscent of a Bernard Hermann score - this is another sensitive record by Sault, representing the grief-stricken but ever open integrity of an inimitable modern soul "choir".

But while the world fixated on ideological rifts and military standoffs, a parallel story unfolded in the Soviet Union and its satellite states: the quiet, defiant blossoming of jazz. This second of a two-part Jazzman compilation mini-series lifts that curtain, tracing the emergence of bold, genre-spanning jazz from the early 60s to the 80s. These recordings reflect the arm-in-arm influences of hard bop, modal, cool and Latin jazz, refracted through the lens of European folk traditions and hard-distilled through filters of restriction, secrecy, and sometimes outright prohibition. Review: Described as "one of New York City's most in-demand guitarists", Mary Halvorson adds new dimensions to her Amaryllis sextet on About Ghosts, expanding the lineup with saxophonists Immanuel Wilkins and Brian Settles across five of its eight new compositions. Out via Nonesuch, the LP was written in late 2023 and hears Halvorson layering dense horn arrangements and unexpected timbres into an otherwise well-established audio apparatus. Addressing a cabinet of friends and guests, she also notably folds in throughout an overdubbed synth bed, using a Pocket Piano gifted by a childhood friend. Produced and mixed by John Dieterich of Deerhoof, the album builds on the direction set by Amaryllis, Belladonna and Cloudward, foregrounding Halvorson's fascination with structural friction, sly detours and collaborative elasticity.

Review: Painkiller, the legendary experimental trio of jazz saxophonist John Zorn, Napalm Death founder turned electronic maverick Mick 'Scorn' Harris and Material bassist Bill Laswell, return with another slab of nightmarish intensity, this time drawing inspiration from Arthur Machen's 1894 horror classic The Great God Pan. Known for their blistering fusion of free jazz, metal and avant-garde chaos, the group takes a more measuredithough no less menacingiapproach here, delivering two sprawling, doom-laden pieces that creep through the shadows with unrelenting dread. 'Ercildoune' builds slowly, its eerie atmospherics punctuated by Zorn's tortured sax wails and Laswell's cavernous basslines, while Harris keeps the tension tight with percussive restraint that feels more like a lurking presence than a rhythmic backbone. 'Secret Sins' takes the descent even deeper, a brooding, oppressive soundscape where distorted drones and spectral echoes coil into a suffocating fog of unease. Less outright feral than some of their past work but just as unsettling, this latest offering in Painkiller's ongoing trilogy proves they can summon horror in more ways than oneisometimes, the slowest burns leave the deepest scars.

Review: Cleo Sol's long-promised debut album, which hit record stores in mid-2020, was a genuinely impressive set: a fine collection of soft-focus jazz, neo-soul and R&B songs that did a great job in showcasing her talents as both a singer and songwriter. Inspired in part by Sol's experiences as a new mother, it's another superb collection of deliciously sweet and soulful songs that should resonate far beyond Sol's growing band of fans. Musically sparse but detailed - think shuffling acoustic guitars, languid beats, ear-catching electronic melodies, twinkling painos and sumptupus bass - Mother is perhaps a more obviously "neo-soul"-themed effort than its predecessor, but that's no bad thing. It has the feel of an album that will be considered a British soul classic in years to come.

Review: Bristolian turntablist and crate digger Andy Smith has long been renowned for the depth of his funk, soul and hip-hop selections, though it's only in recent years that we've discovered the quality and diversity of his disco collection. He continues to flex those credentials on the third instalment in his Reach Up - Disco Wonderland series. While there's plenty of obscurity on show, as you'd expect, Smith has chosen to include contemporary nu-disco cuts and fresh re-edits alongside vintage picks. So, while we cuts from The Sunshine Band, the disco-highlife of Orlando Julius and some late 70s electro-disco courtesy of French outfit Quartz, we're also treated to fresher tracks and edits from BB Soul, Birdee and Nick Reach Up, Yam Who and Full Intention. Throw in a killer DJ mix of the same material by Skratch Bastid and you have a genuinely essential collection.

Review: We can think of few finer stocking fillers for funk aficonados than this fifth Funk & Soul Club compilation from actor/comedian-turned-radio host Craig Charles. As with previous volumes, the Red Dwarf star and BB 6 Music host has included a mixture of original funk era cuts and recent revivalist gems. In the latter category you'll find a stellar instrumental cover of Rick James' "Super Freak" by The Traffic, the dancefloor-burning sound of Nicole Willis and the UMO Orchestra and the brilliant boogie revivalism of Australian singer Kylie Audist. In terms of deeper older selections, look no further than the 1973 jazz-funk re-make of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues" by Brian Auger's Oblivion Express and the Afro-funk explosion that is "Nawa" by Ginger Baker & His African Messengers.

Review: Will Holland's first official mix release under his most familiar alias is a snapshot of a global career spent building communities across Bogota, Brooklyn and Brighton. Opening with the warm introspection of JJ Whitefield's 'The Mind Is A Palace' and the hazy psych-funk of The Heliocentrics, the selection soon tilts into submerged electronics via Dialect and Alfa Mist's brushed jazz motifs on 'In My Defence'. JKriv's 'Pifeiro Malandro' and Quantic's own 'Twang' bring syncopated bounce, setting up cumbia futurists Frente Cumbiero and a percussive remix of 'Theme From Selva'. Later, 'Eko Eko' and a live version of 'Motivic Retrograde' thread together low-slung breaks and synth-rich ambience, before Meridian Brothers' 'Un Grande Nubarron Se Alza En El Cielo' and The Maghreban's 'Covent Garden' ramp up the oddball charm. Anna Morgan and Ehua lock in high-BPM club energy on 'Throw Dat Azz' and 'Scintille', while Turbo Sonidero's 'Kumbia ESSJ' and Sobredosis's 'No Llores Por Mi' land like final toasts to dusk before the sun vanishes entirely. The journey ends, naturally, with a continuous mix of it all.

Review: For the latest volume in their essential Spiritual Jazz compilation series - the eleventh overall - Jazzman has decided to take a trawl through the archives of Danish imprint SteepleChase, focusing specifically on "esoteric modal" and "progressive jazz" originally released between 1974 and '84. It's an impressively bright, breezy and crystal-clear affair - you can hear every cymbal hit, saxophone solo, piano note, snare and rim-shot in glorious clarity - with highlights appearing thick and fast throughout. Our current favourites include the haunting flutes, glistening guitar solos and skipping grooves of Rene McLean's "Aida", the hard-to-pigeonhole inventiveness and cross-cultural fusion of Jim McNeely's "Tipe Tizwe" and the vibraphone-laden up-tempo hustle of Khan Jamal's "Dark Warrior". That said, every track is superb, making this a must-have for spiritual jazz enthusiasts everywhere.

This three-disc retrospective, which comes accompanied by detailed liner notes by the Guardian's Alexis Petridis, tells the story of the label via a mix of genuine disco anthems, early boogie gems, key 12" versions mixed by the likes of Shep Pettibone, John Jellybean' Benitez and Jonathan Fearing, and lesser-celebrated cult classics. All the label's key artists (think John Davis & The Monster Orchestra, K.I.D, Gary's Gang and Rhyze) are present, along with noted 'one-hit wonders' such as David McPherson, Mike & Brenda Sutton, Vicky D and Lucy Hawkins. Review: Boston-based drummer and producer Terri Lyne Carrington reconvenes Max Roach's 1961 landmark with a sharp eye on both lineage and forward motion. Originally conceived as a civil rights-era protest suite, the project blends jazz, voice, and African-diasporic rhythm to address racial justice with clarity and force. This reinterpretation is not a soft tribute - it's a generational handover. Christie Dashiell takes on Abbey Lincoln's vocal role with arresting precision, while the ensemble (including Morgan Guerin, Matthew Stevens and Milena Casado) brings freshness without losing tension. Julian Priester, the sole surviving member of the original lineup, offers a subtle but weighty cameo. Tracks like 'Driva' Man' and 'Triptych' are stretched into wider shapes, drawing on funk, gospel and Afro-Latin idioms without softening the message. As Carrington puts it, this isn't just homage - it's a new freedom suite for now. The message, more than 60 years later, still burns brightly.
