Review: Isobel Campbell's sixth studio album, Bow to Love, released via Cooking Vinyl, is a wonderful example of her distinct blend of wisdom and musical dexterity. Campbell, formerly of Belle and Sebastian, navigates the complexities of the modern world with humour and optimism, addressing toxic masculinity, social media, and political polarization.Bow to Love shines thematically as a nuanced state-of-the-world reflection. Tracks like 'Everything Falls Apart' and 'Do or Die' poignantly critique societal issues, with Campbell's voice serving as a comforting presence. The title track cleverly subverts the notion that love is a cure-all, suggesting instead that it's 'not enough to bow to love'. The single '4316' changes pace with a catchy hook, critiquing the rise of artificial intelligence, while 'Keep Calm and Carry On' subtly protests Brexit. Bow to Love concludes with a hopeful cover of Dire Straits' 'Why Worry,' encapsulating Campbell's belief in human resilience and kindness amid uncertainty. Campbell's ability to blend insightful lyrics with soothing melodies is highly underrated but very much appreciated.
