Bunnin' Up EP
Bunnin' Up EP (green vinyl 12")
Cat: VIBEZ93 017. Rel: 22 Jun 23
Janaway - "Reaching Out" (6:05)
InnaSelf - "Re-animate" (6:33)
Evasion - "This Way" (5:40)
Cheetah - "Bunnin'Up" (6:38)
Review: There's just no stopping Vibez '93 at the moment - the Dutch jungle label is swimming in legit gear and sharing it with the world. We're still reeling from the anonymous Punkrocker and Self Aware EPs. This time around there are names on the plates, as four artists throw down in maximum style. Janaway is up first with the ragga jungle badness of 'Reaching Out', while InnaSelf brings some more introspective pads and synth touches to their amen trickery. Evasion weaves a plush tapestry of ragged breaks, dreamy vocal licks and atmospheric flourishes for a curly advanced slice of jungle perfection and then Cheetah rounds the record off with the truly snare-rushing 'Bunnin' Up'.

Minos & InnaSelf - "Look Good" (4:44)
Minos & InnaSelf - "Emerald" (4:55)
Review: Vibez '93 is one of the must-check outposts for the Dutch d&b scene and in four years they've shaped up a mighty catalogue of ruffneck rollers and snare-rush slammers for your raving pleasure. This time around they're making space for Minos & InnaSelf to explore a variety of shades, from Minos' catchy-as-hell solo drop 'Jungle Massive' to the duo's fathoms deep soul cut 'Eclipse'. 'Look Good' takes things into even brighter territory facing diva vocals off against mellow ragga toasting, while 'Emerald' lays down rich synth lines for a truly atmospheric trip.

Minos - "Phantasm" (5:09)
Minos - "Roadblock" (4:31)
Minos & Just Mack - "Apache" (6:26)
Minos & Just Mack - "Run That Choon" (3:54)
Review: Vibez '93 top up their relatively rare named artist series with a new one from Minos and Just Mack, two furtive and undersung artists whose collaborative efforts here move through an insane heat. Minos takes on the two establishing A-siders with 'Phantasm' and 'Roadblock', scoping out most of the midrange in favour of two hellish extravaganzas of plumb bass and mitre-saw breaks decapitations. The Just Mack collabs bring up the B-side, and move relatively dreamier and wildernessy, though they're not without their militant breaks focus; 'Run That Choon' is especially pitch-happy on the sample cutup, twisting and wringing the break out to high asphyxial heaven.

Space Muffin' EP (orange vinyl 12")
Cat: VIBEZ93 011. Rel: 04 Mar 22
Space Muffin' (7:22)
This Sound (6:56)
Space Agent (8:12)
Whispers (6:17)
Review: Few labels are turning out so much high quality drum & bass as Holland's Vibez '93 right now. Most often it is the eponymous in-house production outfit who take care of the beats but here Tommy The Cat steps up after making plenty of big moves on his own Cat I The Bag label since 2019. 'Space Muffin'' is a blissed out post-club comedown with introspective chords, while 'This Sound' is just as deep - a clatter of gentle broken beats and woozy deep space chords. 'Space Agent' then keeps up the insular feels with seductive but sombre chords and spaced out beats and 'Whispers' rigs things to a close on some dusty jungle breaks.

Left Unspoken (6:01)
Fly By (5:25)
Review: 'Stargazer' is the latest upcoming addition to Vibez '93, arguably one of the ultimate pushers of rave nostalgic dance music in recent years. The Rotterdam label are almost entirely concerned with putting out music that came about in the 1990s as opposed to the 2020s: jungle, drum n' bass, etc. Here the label release yet another 'Unknown Artist' addition to the series, adding but four new trax to the jungly retrospective.

Fairtrade (4:41)
It's Love (5:38)
Mug Ya Self (4:13)
Gorilla (3:33)
Review: Vibez 93 returns to the fore with a prime quartered cut of meatiness and freshness in equal measure. The 'Gorilla' EP opens with a reappropriation of Drake's 'Fair Trade' - on which the Canadian rapper denounces every first-world rapper's qualm from false equivalences to fake friends - pairing these with cleansing liquid breaks, musical Rhodesy ghost notes and quaking 808 basses aplomb. 'It's Love' recalls Orca with its fricative breaks and a barely filtered-in but effective vocal sample, while B-siders 'Mug Ya Self' and 'Gorilla' rework choice cuts from The Streets and Little Simz respectively, proving the UK's enduring efficacy on the now global d&b scene.

M38 (5:32)
Green Eyes (3:43)
Amalfi Coast Drive (4:29)
Tokyo & Paris (5:32)
Review: The latest EP from Rotterdam drum & bass outfit Vibez 93 is a peaking roll-tastic high. 'Tokyo & Paris' spatters four liquid d&b tunes of various shape and size, with 'M38' opening on an anthemic note to contrast the dynamic liquid sub squirms of the A2's 'Green Eyes'. The B1 hears a sampled verse breezily cruise the Italian Amalfi Coast, before its foil emerges on the hip-d&b title track closes on a stoner-step homage to European travel, soundtracked by the sounds of a concrete jungle.

Electric Relaxin (4:55)
Check The Rhyme (4:17)
Cool Like That (5:08)
All Night Long (5:51)
Review: No production outfit keeps a pace of output quite like Vibez '93. The latest four-track record from the shadowy d&b profuser now hears them summon sampled echoes of A Tribe Called Quest and Digable Planets respectively, culling choice acapella selections from the debut albums Low End Theory and Reachin', exegeting the former's titular theory for a hard transpose into sheller drum & bass. 'Electric Relaxation' and 'Check The Rhime' are blown out across a two-side jazzstep liquescence, while 'Cool Like That' and 'All Night Long' make for finer-brushed summer steps.

Review: Fokuz Recordings' Vibez 93 departs from its typical lineup of unknown artists to present a set of liquid drum & bass remixes on a 12" vinyl, where the original artists are named this time. On the A-side, there are impactful and energetic pop remixes of Racoon's Love You More and Dustin Tebbutt's Resin. The B-side offers a lighter yet equally lively vibe, featuring versions of DJ Spoony's Gabrielle and NxWorries' Where I Go, showcasing the record's commitment to a fluid liquid sound.

Orange Moon (6:39)
Funky AF (5:12)
Review: Just in case the abundance of 90s nostalgists weren't evident enough, Vibez '93 is an entire drum & bass imprint / brand dedicated in name to a specific year. 'One More Time' is the utmost latest in this effort, which has, aside from this very moment, seen to many a compilation and Unknown Artist release across multiple labels. This time around, we're met with a fresh EP spanning reworks of various turn-of-the-millennium fixtures on the A, setting the stage for a more original foray on the B, the highlight of which is the undeniable trip-hop abstraction, 'Orange Moon'.

Breathe (4:33)
Scrubs (5:11)
Fam Affair (5:12)
Just Another Door (5:57)
Review: The cheeky junglist mash-ups continue unabated on Vibez 93 as the Dutch label very clearly spells out its plans on the r&b vs d&b 12". On the A-side we're treated to some crisp and direct flips of Blu Cantrell's 'Breathe' and TLC's 'No Scrubs', and the original songwriting content of the all-time classics is kept well and truly intact. All you need is a snappy, rolling beat dropped into the blend, and crowd-pleasing dancefloor magic is right there in the palm of your hands. On the flip Mary J Blige and Queen Latifah get the treatment too, giving you lot of bang for your buck on this big bad and bold record.

Flights Booked (3:00)
All I Need (6:01)
Blue Dream (5:44)
Selfish (4:51)
Review: Vibez 93's Flights Booked EP brings a fresh take on drum & bass with a blend of melodic rhythms and distinct vocal styles. The title track, 'Flights Booked,' opens the EP with a downtempo groove that carries a futuristic vibe, enhanced by a unique hip hop lyrical flow that sets it apart from typical drum & bass tracks. 'All I Need' follows with an energetic burst, maintaining the EP's momentum and showcasing Vibez 93's knack for dynamic beats and engaging melodies. On Side-2, 'Blue Dream' stands out with its rhythm and blues vocal flow layered over crisp drum & bass production. The smooth vocal performance contrasts with the energetic rhythms, creating a great party track, before the EP closes with 'Selfish,' continuing the exploration of diverse soundscapes while staying rooted in the drum & bass tradition.

Everybody Loves Sunshine '23
Brasilia
Review: It's never easy keeping up with Vibez 93 and his all-out assault on the D&B scene, from the roughest jungle cuts for the underground through to canny crowdpleasers like this record right here. 'Video' is a no-nonsense flip of India.Arie's 2001 soul classic, with a righteous lyrical message which sits perfectly atop some fresh and funky breakbeats. 'Westchester Circles' meanwhile doffs its cap to Adam F's none-more-iconic 'Circles' and its source material, 'Westchester Lady' by Bob James. No prizes for guessing the reference material on 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine '23', but this is a different version to the Roy Ayers classic which is going to be peak festival fodder this season. Then cap it off with a perfect slice of sunshine rollage in 'Brasilia' and you've got a record primed for tonnes of fun wherever it gets dropped.

Review: Vibez '93 has established itself as an essential destination for anyone interested in modern jungle iterations, not least the deeper end of the spectrum where ambient atmospherics meet with sharply-sliced breakbeats. Just check this new 12" on the label, credited to Vibez '93 itself and diving into some pitch-perfect amen juggling dreamscapes across four tracks. The pads are richly melodious, the beats rolling, the subs massive - sure, you might well hear the sound Bukem and co. pioneered back in the 90s on the likes of 'Affluence', but who could ever tire of that immaculate sound when it's done so right?

That Once (5:31)
Teardrop (5:57)
Honey (6:29)
Who Got Me (4:58)
Review: Vibez 93 offer an eclectic mix of bootlegged drum & bass remix styles on their latest unknown artist EP here. In the ten-or-so minute interval that makes up the A-side, we span hip-d&b to instrumental liquid: 'That Once' functions as a rattling remix version of Beyonce's 'Yonce', acapella culled from her Homecoming Live album. Then 'Teardrop', you guessed it, serves an incredibly well-mixed version of Massive Attack's eponymous pre-eminent. B-siders 'Honey' and 'Who Got Me' move increasingly r&b come d&b, the B1 plot-twisting Erykah Badu's 'Honey' and 'Who Got Me' reworking Alina Baraz.

Review: Fokuz Recordings' Vibez 93 sidesteps its total usual unknown artistry for a set of liquid drum & bass flips on 12", whose original artists are this time named. On the A comes an impactful, knockabout and yet tenor-toned pair of pop rerubs, of Racoon ('Love You More') and Dustin Tebbutt ('Resin') respectively. Then the B brings up a lighter and equally snappy energy, the record backing itself with strong claims to a free-flowing liquid langue, here with versions of DJ Spoony's 'Gabrielle' and NxWorries' 'Where I Go'.

Call Tyrone (5:52)
Review: Vibes 93 is having a whale of time rinsing out all kinds of upfront drum & bass and jungle, but this takes the fun to a whole new level. The Dutch producer isn't making any attempt to mask the source material on his summer-scouting new release, calling on hip-hop and r&b legends for vocal samples in the midst of straight-up, feel good rollers. Eschewing his rowdier, underground material for something more universal, this is the kind of record which will bring a massive swathe of people together for some proper moments, but more to the point it's done with panache.

Review: Vibez '93 top up their seemingly ever-flowing V/A series with a fresh one. 'Return Of The Mack' continues their recent spate of hip-hop flips, with Biggie Smalls, Mark Morrison and Sunshine Anderson adorning the various rollages on display here. Given the historical interplay between hip-hop and drum & bass, the fusion is unsurprisingly neat, though '93 lends things an extra energy we're confident few others could summon.

Then & Now (5:32)
Lucky (5:55)
Danny's Keys (5:33)
Nero Noctis (5:32)
Review: Vibez '93 bring four new effective jungle heaters to the fold, as ever welcoming yet another unknown (perhaps the same all along) artist. Here they successfully hark back to he early days of jungle (again, as ever), conveying the full retroactive meaning of the sound, 'Then & Now', in conjugating a full sonic sentence. Such is the way with carefully composed music, "lyrical" in comparison with well-written verse; the vibewise arc of the record is sinusoidal, with the title track kicking things off with a colossal shellage, preceding only the glossiest, least viscous of industrial liquids, 'Lucky'; with Vibez 93, ours never really runs out. Then there's 'Danny's Keys', a midnoon synthesis of the two, an outlet for plinky pianos and urban sonic sunshine; then 'Nero Noctis' casts a benevolent shadow upon all the land, guiding us through territories rendered invisible by way of an intense propulsion forward.

Kingz Of The Castle (5:05)
Review: What happens if you take a big vocal sample and drop it over a rinsing, old school jungle break beat? The first tune here, 'Opus III', that's what. It's a high energy affair that might well raise some eye brows given the vocal, but you can't help but admire it's all out joyousness and air of celebration. Flip it over and you'll find something just as divisive - another clattering jungle tune filled with kinetic kicks and flurries of snare, and once more a well-known vocal from Whamdo Project's 'Kings Of The Castle.'

Transgressive Bells (5:40)
2093 (5:49)
Review: The sound of filtered Amen breaks diving down and deep and then rising back up into the mix is not one that's ever likely to go out of fashion, and 'Transgressive Bells' makes the most of this evergreen sonic trick, counterbalancing the roughneck beats with floatation tank ambience. As its name suggests, '2093' has a futuristic vibe that echoes the ongoing drum & bass obsession with the Bladerunner soundtrack, set to hard but chopped up beats. If you're a fan of Dillinja's more celestial, soaring productions - we're thinking 'The Angels Fell', 'Jah' or 'Silver Blade' - you'll be lapping these two tunes up like the cat who got the cream.

Review: Vibez 93 is keeping shut on who they are, but word on the street is they are an already huge and established artist. Frankly, who cares, because the music has plenty to say for itself. This is the latest in a long line of big hitters that jungle fans old and new will immediately fall for. There are airy, spring time vibes on the lovely opener "One" and more dark and complex drums on "Evil Forces". "Passenger" ups the ante again with a flurry of snares and driving bass stabs, then "Ten Eighty Eight" closes out in elastic fashion with a real face melter.

Review: There is just no stopping Vibez 93, one of the busiest and most relabel beat makers in the drum & bass world right now. This new EP, Punkrocker, is another hard-hitting one in several different ways. The opener 'Aquatic Rock' makes an emotional impact - the soulful sounds, ambient pads and delicate floating breaks get you in the mood before things get darker with driving bass and ragga vocals. 'Herault' is another one with jazzy melodies and warm, spring-day atmospheres over tumbling drums and the title cut then gets playful on broken beats, undulating rhythms and filtered melodic loops. 'Serious (Style & Niceness)' is icy and minimal and brilliant.

The Desolate EP is another transportation divide to the early 90s jungle scene. You can almost see the sweat, feel the heat of the rave and smell a sweet whiff of THC when these drop. Review: Special tunes require special treatment and so it is that this monster drum & bass remix comes on its own light blue marbled, hand-stamped, one side and limited edition 12". The artist is unknown but the tune won't be. It is a throwback jam with a hefty piano line dropped in over a rugged bassline. The pitch shifted vocal soars and tugs at the heart strings, while low end wobble really minces your grey matter. The hoover sounds, sci-fi twitches, snatched vocal yelps and snares so sharp they pierce your ear drums all make this an absolute bomb.

Cool Down (5:39)

Vulkaan (4:52)
Review: Vibez 93 veers heavier than usual on their latest almost weekly jungle top-up, released again on their eponymous label (it's been so long, and yet it's still so not clear, as to whether Vibez is one person or many different "unknown artists"). So too is 'Brain Storm' an ironic name, since most brainstorming is usually done in silence, whereas this is just utterly cyclonic, flaunting an equally apt potential to the compel the body. On the A1, a suspenseful set of whodunit piano plinks pepper an otherwise industrial-strength dose of breaks shreddages. We're barely afforded any time to 'Cool Down' neither, not least since Vibez' idea of downtime amounts to little less than a further set of gnashings by the same backbeat. Only do 'Amigo' and 'Vulkaan', on the B, meanwhile, fully wrangle the listener with the ragga influence that was only teased so flirtatiously on the A, with straight-up taped-and -elaid soundclash samples, and lesional rapid-echo breaks, aplenty.

Here we have four classic samples dropped into big tunes and pressed on turquoise vinyl to pump any party. 'I Need Your Lovin'' (dirty '97 mix) has a killer vocal that will never fail, then 'Sweet Love' douses you in rolling drums and heartfelt piano chords as well as another old school soul vocal. It's Muniz's '5 On It' that lends the next tune is deep baseline and catchy hook, before closer 'No Diggity' reworks the hip hop classic into a high energy roller complete with the OG keys.

Flipside (8:36)
Save My Soul (8:23)
Let It Move (8:25)
Warlord (7:18)
Review: Vibez '93 is on a banging run of late, with plenty of killer cuts served up on a hugely regular basis. The quality remains high each time and this new one continues that trend. Landing on clear blue 12" vinyl, this one opens up with 'Flipside' which pairs plunging bass and silvery snares with soulful chords. 'Save My Soul' has an aching vocal to it that really elevates the whole tune and then 'Let It Move' plunges into a deep and cavernous world with hard-edged breaks and jumpy bass. 'Warlord' is a kinetic and catchy roller to close.

Ripples (5:29)
Blue (7:24)
Review: The mysterious Vibez 93 returns to their white label series with more timeless breakbeat treats. Having moved away from the big bootleg styles, Vibez is now finding their own vibe with these powerful jungle-influence broken funk bombardments. Each cut sitting round that mid-late 90s era where both techstep and jungle were both dominant styles, highlights include the Moving Shadow style grace and breezes of 'Ripples' and the big dark booms of 'Self Aware'. The horn-heaved party power of the finale 'Blue' can't go without a shout either. Vibez by name, vibes by nature...

Never Say Never (6:01)
Believe (5:18)
Touch (5:04)
My Luv (6:00)
Review: A cheeky new haul of waspish, sampleholic drum & bass from Vibez 93, the jungle producer-outfit whose exact articulation as an artistic identity, we can never quite place. But this is one of the exact reasons we've warmed to his craft, aside of course from the sparsely calculating yet vasodilatory ecstasy emissive from their music. 'Never Say Never' coolly samples the eponymous Brandy song - a morbid fixation of the jungle and 2-step garage scenes, to name but one - to the point of hardly even needing to quantize it to the breaks-grid, and yet it still works. 'Believe' complicates matters with boxier breakbeat blisters and emphatic "mashup!" jeers, while 'Touch' makes a subtler series of contacts, tacitly stroking both lobes with no less aggro beat clutches and high-reg plucksynths. We end on 'My Luv', another cool reprieve from the fatally unrelenting grind of breaksweight.

Selekta (5:35)
Review: The mysterious Vibez '93 are as prolific as they come; the 'Bad Kingdom' EP is certainly not the first of this productive drum & bass project/imprint's outputs to make it through our floodgates this year. Four slices of various productive forces - ranging from paddy jungle ('Jelly Swim'), to an unusual foray for '93: drilled-out techstep ('Labrea'). Otherwise, expect no nonsense, as this record spans both casual and not-so-casual floorfillers.

Illusions (7:25)
Review: Vibez '93 is on a roll, as we recall several of the Fokuz Recordings sub-outlet's best works through a throng of EP reissues. The 'Execution' EP is on the moniker's dirtier and rawer side, launching the listener's fledgling pirate voyage with 'Wheel Up' (its breakdown driven impeccably forward by acapella vocals from A Tribe Called Quest's 'Scenario'), followed shortly by the atmosfear-strikers 'Skazka' and 'Execution', and finally coming in to land on the axe-touting 'Execution', recalling the earliest of dark LTJ in its messy-hazy breaks, tribal calls and wiggly sound effects.

Midnight Owl (5:19)
Violet (5:15)
Forgotten (5:16)
Tropical (5:44)
Review: From deep within the Fokuz empire, Vibez 93 continues to bring the fiercest blend of old-skool junglism and nu-skool production flair to utterly essential cuts for the widest of raves. On 'Midnight Owl' the pads spell out a smoky, immersive atmosphere, but that doesn't mean there's any hold back on the rolling breakbeat science. 'Violet' is a bit breezier in its demeanour thanks to some mellow chord licks and 'Forgotten' plummets into dank surroundings for a proper slice of breakbeat science as we've come to expect from this essential modern jungle label.
