Review: Having previously issued Akiko Yano's 1976 debut "Japanese Girl" - an eccentric set of East-West pop fusions marked out by the artist's distinctive vocals - Wewantsounds has returned to raid her vaults once more. "Iroha Ni Konpeitou" first appeared in 1977 and garnered great hype in Japan thanks to the success of its predecessor. It's a similarly eccentric but inspired set, with Yano confidently flitting between synthesizer-heavy instrumental soundscapes (see superb opener "Kawaji"), drowsy country-inspired songs ("A Long Wait"), seductive jazz-funk ("Hourou"), head-nodding reggae-boogie ("Hai Hai Gasa") and breathy, post-soul ballads ("On The Way Home", a song that boasts both pedal steel and synthesizers).

Review: Wewantsounds continues its Akiko Yano reissue series with a celebrated gem: 1980's "Gohan Ga Dekitayo", a set whose title apparently translates as "Ready For Dinner". The double album is significant in part because the music underpinning her distinctive J-Pop vocals was provided by Yellow Magic Orchestra, with band member Ryuichi Sakamoto acting as co-producer. As a result, the set offers a distinctive blend of far-sighted synthesizer sounds, power-pop and American style AOR rock, with Yano's famed vocals and piano playing featuring prominently throughout. There are nods to multiple styles - early electrofunk, reggae and so on - and some genuinely surprising highlights, including a killer cover of YMO's "Tong Poo". Bonkers but brilliant!

Review: Last year marked four decades since Boris Blank and Dieter Meier released their first album as Yello, alongside then third member Carlos Peron. To celebrate the milestone, they've decided to offer up this exhaustive but - given the length of their career - surprisingly tight retrospective. CD one chronicles their career highlights from the first two decades of their career, when they enjoyed their biggest chart hits (see 'Oh Yeah') and were renowned for an eccentric form of synth-pop that relied heavily on unusual samples and off-kilter rhythms. Disc two looks at their second 20 years, offering up a similarly odd but inspired mixture of eccentric pop and dancefloor electronica. Fittingly, it finishes with a rousing 2016 live version of 'The Race', another of their brilliant 1980s singles.

Review: Composer and producer Adrian Younge has enjoyed a diverse career, variously releasing dusty hip-hop collaborations, psychedelic workouts, and deliciously funky film soundtracks. For The Electronique Void: Black Noise, he's changed tack entirely, delivering an album that was, bar a few live drum breaks, recording entirely using vintage electronic instruments. That means a mixture of analogue synths - including, to our ears at least, some modular ones - and dusty drum machines, with the resultant music sitting somewhere between the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Klaus Schulze, Conrad Schnitzler, David Vorhaus and, on the impressive "Voltage Controlled Orgasms", horror legend John Carpenter. Throughout, Younge maintains impressive control over mood and melody, despite his experimental intentions.
