This isn't one of Claussell's dubbed-out edits, rather a full rebuild, toughened for long-form dancefloor play, road-tested globally, and now hearing a second press on green vinyl after the initial 100-copy black vinyl run vanished in an hour. Review: Amid a comprehensive Doors reissuing effort by Rhino Records comes a new re-press of their storm-whipping sixth record. Infamously the last album to feature the band's leading symbolic light and 27-club member Jim Morrison - who died two months after the album's release - LA Woman does indeed sound like a last hurrah, reigniting the band's debutant rollicking rock flame after a relatively dozy lull in sound at their career mi point. Marked by rip-roaring blues and a latterly throatier vocal delivery by Morrison, 'Been Down So Long', 'LA Women', and 'Hyacinth House' evidence a loyalty and an obsession with classic and raw blues. The jangly hit single 'Love Her Madly' would be one of the few songs on the record not to incorporate the Southern American sound, by and large. Steeped in a controversial history encircling the Doors' later career - Morrison had been charged with profanity and indecent exposure for stripping naked at a concert in Miami in the year before recording - LA Woman does indeed have a righteous, raunchy, flippant, "f*** it" charge about it.

Review: This is The Doors' masterpiece - their Led Zeppelin IV; their Dark Side Of The Moon. Jim Morrison and co. dimmed down the synth, brass and strings of their previous album, The Soft Parade, and cranked up their blues rock DNA. Already home to the likes of the Yardbirds and Cream, the British public lapped up this invigorating new sense of direction and upon its release in 1969, it became their biggest UK chart success. 'Roadhouse Blues' is a rabble-rousing performance with a sense of swagger and snarl that reflects the character of the then bearded Morrison, who was looking a far cry from the clean shaven boho poet that entered the scene earlier on in the 60s. Another banger on here is 'Indian Summer'. Although for totally different reasons. It's no wonder this track was used to soundtrack the desert peyote trip in Oliver Stone's Doors film, as it's among their most languid and psychedelic work ever.

Review: "I've always loved the Doors. I know it's kind of fashionable to think the Doors are naff, but I don't give a f*ck about that." The words of Matt Berry, not ours. But we have to agree. The songs here on The Doors' second album are some of the finest to ever be pressed onto wax. 'People Are Strange' is one of the most stunning singles ever and 'Love Me Two Times' is one of the catchiest songs of the 60s. The Doors were at the forefront of innovation in rock and so they included a wide range of instruments, including the marimba and they were among the first in rock to incorporate the Moog synthesizer. Their producer, Paul A. Rothchild, was instrumental in this, providing a then cutting edge eight-track recording machine. The results of recording to tape like this are supreme and it's no wonder people are returning to this style, favouring it ahead of clunky computer-based programmes.

Review: The third album by The Doors from 1968 made heavier use of improvisation, opposing their earlier reliances on pure composition. Responsible in large part for what has become known as "third album syndrome" - the tertiary equivalent of the infamous "sophomore slump", whereby, in either case, bands struggle to come up with original material after a stonking debut or two - the album provoked mixed reactions on release, owing to its loosened, comparatively slack sound, in contrast to their raucous debut and second LPs. While Jim Morrison's worsening alcoholism provoked such skepticisms at the time, the album was embraced by fans in hindsight, and now this Rhino Records release cements that legacy with new original liners and rare photos. Elements of their original sonic buzz still remain, as on the title track, where twinging stereo twangs complement expectant, purgatory tenors from Morrison.

Review: The Doors' fourth album The Soft Parade was a remarkable return to form in the milieu of jazz rock and pop rock. This was a bold stylistic move made in seeming response to fan distaste at their third LP, 1968's Waiting For The Sun, an album deemed lethargic by some critics compared to their earliest smashes. And yet despite gruelling tour schedules and tumultuous intra-group dramas, The Soft Parade remains a controversial record, again inciting critical accusations of sellout co-optation by the AOR industry machine in the blue corner, and in the red, curious endearments to the Doors' brachiations in jazz ('Touch Me') and banjo blues ('Runnin' Blues').

Review: By 2004, Harold Budd was a sufferer of chronic "no, really, this is my final album" syndrome; he had claimed Avalon Sutra as his artistic curtain call, which would reach its apotheotic height under the David Sylvian and his label Samadhisound. The reality was that Budd did go on to record many another album, including a Philip Glass tribute and a solo piano album, Perhaps (2007). But this, his intended retirement, was probably his most interesting. Florid neo-noir soundscapes - mured behind soft-saturated limits of sax and trellised piano - glean an unusual sense of a Lynchian underside to domesticity and normality. A soundtrack to a part-corrupted life, this "Arabesque" record transitions into utter serenity by the time of 'Little Heart', whose faint triangles and swelling pads nail an impure and contradictory sense of alterity, resignation and peace.

Review: Buffalo Springfield's second album hears a reissue through Analogue Productions US. In the words of AllMusic, this record saw a decentralising of Springfield's band, with a tacit sprawling out of instrumental and production duties by the members informing on this blues folk-tinged, early psychedelic rock magnum. The mood is quotidian but fantastical at the same time: "Every day's a killing time, sun comin' up outside, no matter what this time, Saturday's child stays home..." goes the idling line on 'Everydays', just before a searing distorto-guitar note interrupts and cuts across an otherwise picturesque scene. Smooth to the point of cosmic, the record also benefits from orchestral Americana romances, which hardly signify the to come later: there's no way the idyllic 'Expecting To Fly' could predict the endless twangoffs of 'Hung Upside' for a second.

Review: This vinyl-only survey refracts Okinawan folk traditions through vivid jazz-funk and big band arrangements, creating a prismatic, highly listenable archive of Japan's southern soul. Kiyoshi Yamaya's influence runs deep, his arrangements glowing with cinematic elegance on 'Ryukyu Miyabi 2' through to the festival-like drive of 'Ryukyu No Matsuri 1'. The percussive triptych 'Nishinjo-bushi/Asadoya Yunta/Tanchame' shifts with deft energy, while his solo pieces like 'Ryukyu No Sora' feel airier, almost impressionistic. Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys stir big band verve into 'Tanchame-bushi' and 'Hatoma-bushi', while Minoru Murayama's 'Asadoya Yunta' leans more contemplative. Kifu Mitsuhashi's takes on 'Tanchame' and 'Asadoya Yunta' feel grounded in breath and space, balancing the brassier moments with shakuhachi-led intimacy. The sequencing cleverly blurs the line between groove-heavy reimagination and respectful homage, shaping a dialogue that's rhythmic, emotive and alive. Review: Ryan Coogler's 2025 period horror epic gets a double-barrelled musical treatment courtesy of longtime collaborator Ludwig Goransson, who helms both a star-studded original soundtrack and an original score. The Swedish composer, now LA-based, grounds the first in deep, smoky blues and soul i recorded live with Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Hailee Steinfeld, Rod Wave and more i while the second is a sprawling instrumental suite full of spectral folk motifs and aching melodic fragments. Both releases came out the same day as the film in April 2025, via Sony Masterworks and Sony Classical respectively. From the soulful chug of 'This Little Light of Mine' and Rod Wave's moody title track, to the resonator-led gothic tension of 'Clarksdale Love' and 'Grand Closin'', the project fuses vintage fidelity with modern production flair. The musicianship is staggering throughout, captured across Royal Studios Memphis, Electric Lady in New York and more. Goransson's use of the same Dobro guitar carried by lead character Sammie Moore adds an uncanny weight to his score i the whole thing is textured, world-building work. This is Southern Gothic by way of jazz, blues, doom metal and chamber music i and a major release in both the soundtrack and score worlds.

Review: Now receiving a reissue with a focused selection of four key tracks, Africa/Brass remains one of the most distinctive entries in John Coltrane's catalogue. Originally released in 1961, the album marked his debut for Impulse! Records and a bold detour into large ensemble territory. On the surface, it does not radically redefine jazz, but its genius lies in how it reimagines familiar structures with fresh perspective. The title track, taking up an entire side, is a masterclass in minimalism and expression. Anchored by a single chord and two double bassesione bowed, one pluckediit unfolds with dynamic shifts in tone and texture, moving from spiritual calm to orchestral thunder. Despite its scale, the arrangement breathes, allowing space for Coltrane and his group to explore vast emotional terrain. 'Greensleeves' and 'Blues Minor' are sturdy companion pieces. The former is a reinterpretation of the folk classic, transformed through Coltrane's rich phrasing and Elvin Jones' explosive drumming. 'Blues Minor' swings harder, spotlighting the full ensemble with more open solo sections. Arranged by Eric Dolphy, the album trades some spontaneity for depth and cohesion. It remains grounded and earthy, another ace in Coltrane's heayweight pack.

Review: South Korean survival drama Squid Game took the post-lockdown viewing world by storm. Depicting 456 financially desperate contestants accepting a mysterious invitation to compete in a series of deadly children's games for a massive cash prize, the series, penned by Hwang Dong-hyuk, seemed to successfully mirror a dour reality that was true even before and despite our pre-COVID collective scotoma: no capitalist subject has the luxury of escaping debt cyclicality. Jung Jaeil's highly idiosyncratic soundtrack is therefore complementarily ridiculous, juxtaposing elephantine trombones and toy flutes with dramatic electronic orchestral buildups, prompting audiences the world over to consider the real stakes behind the otherwise farcical situations depicted in-universe.

Review: Keeping to a sadomasochistic touring schedule - juggling the dates of which with album releases between 1974 and 1977 - Bad Company were in sore need of a break following the completion of their fourth LP, Burnin' Sky. After two years, they made their return on March 17, 1979, with their fifth studio album Desolation Angels, named after the Jack Kerouac beatnik classic of the same name. A 10-track collection of blues-influenced rock was met with strong chart performance, proving that even amid the rise of punk and new wave, Bad Company's signature sound still had significant appeal. The album's standout track, 'Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy', became a gold-selling single, while tracks like 'Gone, Gone, Gone', 'Lonely for Your Love' and 'She Brings Me Love' emboldened the vocal prowess of lead larynx Paul Rodgers. The album sports a relatively polished production sheen compared to Burnin' Sky, suggesting renewal after disenchantment.
