Review: The fourth edition in Original Gravity's Down In The Basement series, which gathers instrumental soul and swing cuts onto worthy 7" slabs, resounding the fervent 1960s decadal gap in which mod reigned supreme. With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.

Review: Roy Ayers at his most transcendent. 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' is more than a summertime anthemiit's a spiritual moodboard that's shaped jazz-funk, soul, r&b and hip-hop for nearly 50 years. Ayers, born in Los Angeles and raised in its fertile fusion scene, places the vibraphone at the music's heart, coaxing heat-haze tones from sparse chords, synths, and that honeyed chorus. Flip it over and the instrumental version unlocks a deeper layer: stripped of vocals, it becomes a pure groove, drifting and hypnotic. What lingers is the balanceibetween melancholy and bliss, rhythm and release. A rare track that feels entirely unhurried yet quietly radical, now preserved in a limited pressing that looks as golden as it sounds.

Review: This orange 7" is a miniature monument to one of soul's most quietly influential figures. Roy AyersiLos Angeles-born, jazz-schooled, funk-mindedicrafted 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' not to dazzle but to dissolve. It moves with a drowsy clarity: shimmering synth, near-whispered vocals, and a lazily tumbling bassline that never quite lands. Released during a golden run of Ayers' mid-70s material, the track has since become shorthand for warm-weather introspection, equal parts ease and ache. The instrumental version on the reverse keeps the spirit intact, offering a meditative glide through the same terrain. Limited to 300 copies, this orange pressing pairs a low-lit groove with a deepening sense of legacyiAyers' influence isn't just heard, it's felt in the space he leaves behind.

Review: Few recordings capture the easy intensity of a summer afternoon like 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine'. Released in 1976 and wrapped in slow-drifting synths and soft falsettos, the track became a touchstone not just for Roy Ayers, but for 70s soul and beyond. Born in Los Angeles, Ayers helped define the jazz-funk crossover, placing the vibraphone at the centre of a sound both hazy and sharply detailed. The original vocal take on the A-side still melts under its own warmth; the instrumental on the flip uncovers the careful architecture beneath. Issued here on 7" black wax following Ayers' recent passing, this reissue feels like both a keepsake and a quiet honouring of an artist who shaped a whole way of listening.

Review: Japan's Fourth Wave Record Factory sure does know how to serve up brilliantly beguiling sounds that ate you well out of your here and now. Next up is this, 'Dondon Bushi' 7" by Shoukichi Kina, Champloo and Tomoko Kina that explores a mix of Okinawan traditional sounds and modern grooves. The Mbira dance mix of the A-side jam is a bubbly rhythm with worldly percussion and soulful melodies that echo folk majesty and are topped with a wonderful weird vocal from Shoukichi Kina. On the flip, there is a more lazy and downtempo style dub rhythm, 'Tie Island' (No Man's Island mix) which is another worldly trip.

Review: Finnish jazz standout Timo Lassy returns with Live in Helsinki, a smashing new live album on We Jazz Records that again spotlights his dynamic trio. It comprises Lassy on tenor sax, Ville Herrala on double bass and Jaska Lukkarinen on drums and was recorded at G Livelab in 2023. The album breathes fresh life into tracks from Lassy's celebrated catalogue and mixes up raw, immediate cuts that are full of energy. The trio's chemistry is clear to hear and is driven by deep friendship and real musical trust. Compared to studio work, this live set captures a freer, edgier side of the group but it is still heartfelt, hard-swinging jazz that proves why Lassy packs hometown shows with ease.

Drawing deep inspiration from John Coltrane, Torrent blends intricate harmonies with raw, unfiltered improvisation, crafting a collection that is both a tribute and an exploration of new sonic terrain. The album opens with 'Danse Tropical, a reflective and richly textured piece where Torrent's saxophone weaves through intricate scales, searching yet controlled. The steady rhythm section acts as an anchor, allowing the melodies to expand and evolve organically. In contrast, 'Quannassa' injects a restless intensity, shifting through complex harmonic movements while the quartet navigates its dynamic ebb and flow with effortless cohesion. The title track, 'Buleria', is perhaps the album's centerpieceian eight-minute odyssey that fuses modal jazz with flamenco's hypnotic rhythms. Torrent's improvisation feels deeply intuitive, soaring over a meditative backdrop that evokes the vast, open landscapes of Iberia. The interplay between the quartetipiano, bass and drumsiis both fluid and instinctive, fostering an environment where the saxophone can push beyond conventional boundaries. While deeply rooted in Coltrane's legacy, Buleria is far from a mere homage. Review: Espen Berg's Maetrix captures the pianist and composer at a bold creative high, as he upscales his craft, this time working with the celebrated Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Originally premiered to a full ovation at the 2017 Molde International Jazz Festival, this six-part suite finally sees release, recorded between Oslo's Rainbow Studio and Ora Studio in Trondheim. Berg furthers his rep for rhythmic complexity and emotive depth to a 14-piece ensemble featuring standout artists Daniel Herskedal, Rob Waring, and Hayden Powell, while vocalists Kirsti Huke and Sissel Vera Pettersen ensure a graceful vocal topline. Echoes of Pat Metheny and Kenneth Dahl Knudsen waft through the compositions, but Maetrix stands firmly in Berg's own voice, radiating the sense of a collaborative effort years in the making.

Review: On the second instalment in his Requests LPs series, veteran jazz pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto leads an iron-clad trio with Hiroshi Kagawa on bass and Toshio Osumi on drums, successfully dispatching yet another recorded magnum made up of well-recognised sheet pieces from his own discography. Made up entirely of Yamamoto standards solicited by fans in advance of the recording, the pianist was solicitous in turn, reeling off each piece with ease: 'For Once In My Life', 'Gentle Blues' and 'The Third Man' all make for headsy selections besides the usual repertoire, cementing Yamamoto's extemporary playing; his ad-libbing, cufflink-flicking talents as a pianist.

Review: Stanley Turrentine's debut as a bandleader arrived in June 1960, just a few months after his notable sideman role on Jimmy Smith's Midnight Special and Back at the Chicken Shack. With these albums cementing his status as a standout player, Blue Note boss Alfred Lion wasted no time bringing Turrentine back into the studio to record his first outing as a leader. The result announced the arrival of his deeply soulful tenor saxophone, immediately marking him as a key figure in the hard bop scene. Turrentine's approach was distinctiveieach note infused with emotion and a deep sense of groove. His compositions, like 'Look Out' and 'Minor Chant', alongside tunes by Parlan and Clifford Brown, revealed his mastery of both melody and rhythm.
