Expansions (6:05)
Cosmic Funk (5:31)
Review: A rare jazz-funk 12" documenting the timeless work of an epistemic classic. Lonnie Liston Smith's 'Expansions' is normally known as an album, but it's only the central theme, composed first and without an initial ambition to craft a full-length around it, which said album took its name. The high strings of the track 'Expansions' bring a filmic tension to an otherwise louche funk line, laying down a stark contrast that more than justifies its use as the 1974 album's opening track and namesake. On the B-side here, however, comes not one from Smith's Expansions, but rather another opener, 'Cosmic Funk', which was released just six months earlier and documents a much wilder, Afrobeat-adjacent wah-fest, with Smith himself referring to the track and resultant record as an example of 'sci-fi funk'.

Linda Lyndell - "What A Man" (2:41)
Billy Hawks - "(O Baby) I Do Believe I'm Losing You" (3:03)
Review: This Juno colour vinyl exclusive finds Linda Lyndell serve up her own majestic cover of the classic "What A Man." Her vocal is smooth and buttery but also laden with gravitas, while the sweeping horns and jazzy keys all around her help to lift the spirits. On the flip is an ice cold slice of funk from Billy Hawks in the form of his "(O Baby) I Do Believe I'm Losing You". It's raw soul that glides at high speed with plenty of hip swinging claps. This is a much sought after reissue that will shift quick, so make sure you do too.

Louis Armstrong & Leon Thomas - "The Creator Has A Master Plan (Peace)" (4:06)
Review: 'The Creator Has a Masterplan (Peace)' might have been performed beautifully by Louis Armstrong but it was written by Pharoah Sanders and Leon Thomas. Sanders was the first to record and release it on February 14, 1969 and it has since been covered by the likes of Don Cherry, Krokodil, The Dynamics, Lord Echo and many more artists right up to the present day. Here we get the Leon Thomas versions from 1969 as well as the one he recorded alongside Louis a year later. Two sublime sounds that make the whole world feel at peace.

Review: Lonnie Liston Smith's third LP with the Cosmic Echoes, from 1974, was the second to mark his discovery of the success-driving formula that was spiritual jazz-funk. The record's impact has indeed resounded through the decades, like a chakra-prodding gong. Though for all its crystal-clear recording and effortless performances, Expansions is perhaps best known as a precursory informant on clubland, prophesying some of the most storied developments in electronic dance music and its uses of jazz. The phasy drums on 'Shadows', zilling fills of 'Voodoo Woman', and of course the banging suspensions of 'Expansions', have been sampled the world over by electronica musicians - a trend which begun not long after the record's release on Flying Dutchman.

Review: Legendary keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith worked with jazz greats like Dakota Staton, Max Roach, Abbey Lincoln, and Roland Kirk, formed a notable partnership with Pharoah Sanders and Leon Thomas, toured Europe with Gato Barbieri and played Fender Rhodes with Miles Davis, all before putting out his own solo album. Smith's debut, Astral Traveling, released on Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman label features his Cosmic Echoes and includes life-affirming cosmic jazz tracks like 'Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord' and 'In Search Of Truth.' This reissue includes a gatefold sleeve and liner notes by jazz critic Nat Hentoff.

Review: Lonnie Liston Smith's legacy in the world of spiritual jazz, soul and funk is huge, but he remains an often overlooked figure only discovered by those with a dedication to the music. As such, his albums are always worthy of reissue to hopefully reach more ears in need of the gifts they possess, and while Expansions is rightly considered his landmark offering, this swift follow up with The Cosmic Echoes is just as essential. Just melt into the bubbling, fast-slow reverie of 'Beautiful Woman' and let Smith's exquisite talents carry you away. If you already know the music, then take a chance to cop a freshly remastered edition, and if you're not familiar with Smith's work then take this golden opportunity to expand your horizons.

Review: Described as "Sci-fi Jazz", this slice of New York's jazz scene from 1974 is getting a well sought-after repressing. In the homes of thousands, the 9-piece group symphonically combine a spiritual blend of percussion, sax, and drums to compliment Smith's refined vocal. The real magic is in-between the sang passages however, with the organic progression of acoustics building up to create a relaxing jazz-funk and jazz fusion sound that is completely distinct. 'Cosmic Funk' and 'Naima' are real highlights, especially vocally with Smith's 'Cosmic Funk' powerful scream and belted vocals counteracting the gently flowing sounds emitting all around the listener (this record is a joy to hear in stereo sound by the way). Snap this vinyl up before it goes away again, they may not land back on earth for a long time.

Review: Of Lonnie Liston Smith's many outstanding achievements, his work with The Cosmic Echoes will surely go down in history as his finest. The six-album run from 1973 to 1976 is utterly flawless, and in the midst of it comes Renaissance. This soaring work, which opens up with the heavenly tones of 'Space Lady', sounds as vital now as it did back in 1976, and it's quite remarkable it's never been repressed since the time of its release. Well, sharks be damned, for now this glittering prize of jazz funk is available once again.

Review: Johnny Lytle was a key figure in the early acid jazz scene who became renowned for his anthem 'Selim.' The Ohio vibraphonist also gained fame with his 1965 album The Village Caller on Riverside and after it closed he teamed up with label owner Orrin Keepnews for two albums on Detroit's Tuba. Ace reissued The Loop last year, and now BGP does the same with New And Groovy featuring a stellar lineup: Milt Harris (organ), Wynton Kelly (piano), George Duvivier (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums), Montego Joe (congas), and Lytle on vibes make this a gem that includes original tracks like 'The Snapper' and 'The Pulpit,' plus the radical reworking of Miles Davis' 'Miles.' Though poorly distributed in 1967, this record has been acclaimed by DJs like Gilles Peterson.
