Review: Take Me For A Ride is the latest from Luuk Van Dijk on his own label Dark Side Of The Sun. The title track is a peak time tech house workout that is lively and energetic. Reminiscent of house at raves during the mid 90s, the combination of the vocals and rhythm makes this a fun track to listen to. The remix adds a New York house sound to it for a nice alternate version depending on how your set is trending. For the B-side, 'Doin' It' is a more mellow, dreamy and laid back affair while 'Sexy Motherf*cker' is a mid-set groover, all making for a versatile 12" that house music heads should get plenty of plays out of.

Review: Dutchman Tifra is given the reins for the second release on the Dutch label Proxy and does great job of taking inspiration from 90s rave sounds and weaving them carefully into his own futuristic grooves with a tech house and minimal aesthetic. Bold bass and sleek rhythms define these cuts from the slick and spaced out sounds of 'Peninsula' to the warped and pulsing sounds of 'The Algorythm' and broken beat lushness of 'Bio Lab.' Also on the B side, Local Group bring a distinctive mix of UK breaks, d&b and rave into their arresting remix of 'Bio Lab'.

Review: UK's All My Thoughts label has built up a strong reputation the past half-decade. Fans of the label point to it alongside a few others as the perfect blend of house and techno music. Edmondson is equally as strong with a handful of releases that have also garnered high praise for. Vanarama houses four examples of deep house that bridge garage music and dance music to make them both futuristic, deep and fun. We really like the wide range of moods in this EP. All My Thoughts has another winner! Only 80 copies in total so be quick!

Review: Oi oi garage crew, get locked into this one and you won't be disappointed. Introspekt and Jay Ward take once side each with the latter going first. His 'Work Me Gahdammit' is all scuffed up beats, rolling kicks and well placed vocal chops. The D-Dubz 96 dub brings a more brazen and old school feel with classic melodic motifs rinsing down. Ward offers the bump n grind of 'How U Want It' which then becomes more heavy, dark and late night with the Yosh remix. Solid and reliable garage sounds.

Review: The brand new Mush Trax label makes a head-turning debut here with some naught garage and house cuts from the depths of Dorset. Footprint opens up with the straight-up shuffler that is 'Light It Up. It's got old school flavours all over it - the piano stabs, the original Chicago house vocal and the melodies. It's the same story with Dunman's 'Hot' with its filthy backless bass stabs, yelping vocal cries and steel-plated US garage drums. Completing this highly effective EP is Ash Brown with another throwback garage anthem in 'Whompa.'

Review: Luv Shack's compilation style 'Disco Biscuits' series is the very definition of reliable, with each new EP delivering killer cuts aimed at the more cosmic end of nu-diusco dancefloors. Volume five in the series arrives with four more tried-and-tested workouts and little in the way of forgettable filler. Check first Rising Seed's 'Back For More', a driving slab of spacey dub disco/cosmic disco fusion in which intergalactic electronics and samples sitars ride a Prins Thomas-esque bassline and beats, before admiring the chugging and squelchy nu-disco shuffle of 'Suffering of K.P' by B.Visible. Over on the flip, Peletronic's 'Drifting' is a glassy-eyed slab of immersive deep house/nu-disco fusion, while Jon Gravy's 'When U Leave' is a stomping slab of peak-time house headiness rich in bustling beats, memorable melodies and hands-aloft riffs.

Review: We can hear a hint of early New York house heads like Todd Terry in the way the drums are constructed on this new one from Toribio, who has linked up with Sharin for an authentic vocal flourish. Her silky tones lend real quality to the choppy analogue drums and lodge top lines deep in your brain. After the original comes an alternate mix with some extra jazzy chords moving about the mix, and then closing things out is a Crackazat remix. In this one, the drums take on a bit of a garage swing with extra weight making you move while the soulful vocal flair remains in place up top.

Review: Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks In Hell was first established in 2010 and since then has steadily peddled the hottest of sonic metals, either well-known or radar-evading. Review: Long dormant has laid the tried but true practice of dubstep and garage artists sampling classic horror movie dialogue, pre-drop. We're thoroughly happy to hear that new Peaky Beats sublabel Brainjuice have gone and resurrected this zombie for us. This four-tracker from the label hears label heads Peaky and Vel carefully and creatively work in as-yet unknown samples to the stew; some kind of Frankensteinish exclamation on the dubstep A1 laments the feeding of a monster "human brains", while the breakstep A2 'Bacon Dance' hears more timestretched, dystopian vocals amid wobbles. 'Don't' leans more into the kind of melodic dubstep that likes to sample R&B acapellas, and is the most refreshing of the lot.

Review: Young South London dance veteran Ben Hauke delivers a worthy full-length LP for Touching Bass, Club Cute, a self-described love letter to the city's club culture. Feeling outwards from his establishing, Rye Wax-adjacent EPs and 12"s - which sounded more rooted in 4x4 house, albeit with an unmistakably SE-tinged wonky bent - Hauke's latest here leans further into the broken beats and UK garages more befitting of a full-length dance record. Welcoming a star cast of vocal and production plus-ones to the party (Jadasea, Brother Portrait, Shy One, even Katy B (!)), the effortless feel of UK club culture, particularly the midnight moods endemic to quote-unquote 'SELDN' and its many nighttime haunts in centres like Peckham, Deptford, New Cross and Bermondsey, is felt lightheartedly - cutely - throughout.

Review: A new year always brings with it a wealth of new labels and 2024 is proving no different. The latest to fall in our laps is Unknown Musik from Spain, and the production credits on this inaugural EP also go to Unknown Musik, although the two edits are actually by Sadkiel. They first tackle 'Latin Flute' which has some nice fresh tech beats run through with Balearic guitars and soul samples that really bring it to life. On the flip is the more minimal styling of 'September' with its pulling low ends and raw percussion as well as some edgy stabs to keep things from being all too sweet.

Opening track, 'Thanks Felix', moves at lightspeed - a thrilling race through a gritty arrangement of blunted kicks, shifting in and out of focus, moving between order and disorder. 'Fingerclut' emerges with an instantly more house-facing feel - a satisfyingly hypnotic groove spirals in a circle motion, featuring a cyclonic gathering of subtle flecks of percussive variation over the course of the track. Offering a spliced, glitched-out take on contemporary bass, 'Final Bout' journeys through moments of airy weightlessness before being thrown back into the growling, driving bass section of the track. 'What You Want' (feat Colonel Red) opens up with some soul-drenched sounds and lively drum programming topped with a great original vocal. 'Beautiful' is more warm house with smoky chord work that calls to mind early Kerri Chandler. Review: New York's Paradise Garage always had a reputation for championing "knocky" sounds, with its staple genre, garage house, and its auditory coeval, speed garage, co-emphasising a swiftly swung open-and-close hi-hat pattern. But Berlin native Nat Wendrell, now carrying the formative 4x4 garage torch, proves that garage house swing can sound lacklustre even in Paradise: compared even to those earliest releases, these are devilishly swung tunes. The 'Embrasse' EP is far "knockier" and more swung than most other garage house releases that came before it, where each perc and one-shot is put in its draggiest, latest possible rhythmic place. 'What I Need', meanwhile, stands out here as the Strictly Rhythm DX7 organiser of choice, with a deeply nostalgic "yeah-yeah" acting as a focal vocal.
