Say You Love Me
Review: While Wilco has often regarded EPs as secondary offerings, their latest release, 'Hot Sun Cool Shroud', defies that trend by presenting a cohesive artistic statement reminiscent of a full album. Unlike previous EPs, which were typically promotional in nature, this six-song collection embraces the format's potential, showcasing the band's versatility and depth. The opener, 'Hot Sun', blends sensations of pleasure and existential anxiety, as Jeff Tweedy questions his role in the face of climate change. Each track feels intentional, flowing smoothly into the next while exploring various facets of the band's identity. The two-part structure features instrumental pieces that punctuate the vocal tracks, showcasing a mix of melody and dissonance that reflects their eclectic sound. From the reflective 'Ice Cream' to the energetic chaos of 'Inside the Bell Bones', Wilco exhibits an impressive range, seamlessly blending elements of rock, country and experimentation. 'Hot Sun Cool Shroud' not only stands as a remarkable addition to their discography but also redefines the possibilities of the EP format in their artistic journey.

Say You Love Me
Review: First released on streaming platforms last summer, Wilco's 'Hot Sun Cool Shroud' EP was uniformly praised by critics. Much more than a stop gap between albums (it arrived roughly 12 months after the outfit's lauded 13th studio full-length, Cousin), the six-track set bristles with inventiveness while flitting between styles and tempos. So, opener 'Hot Sun', a sticky slab of Americana-tinged jangly indie brilliance, is followed by the reverb and solo-laden alt-rock squall of 'Livid' and the gentle, string-laden swoon of 'Ice Cream'. And so it continues, with the fuzzy positivity and weary vocals of 'Annihilation' being joined by the pleasant, impossible-to-pigeonhole experimentalism of 'Inside The Bell Bones' and the twinkling, heartfelt melancholia of 'Say You Love Me'.

Review: Let There Be Rock, AC/DC's powerhouse fourth album, embodies the raw, unbridled energy that defines rock and roll. From the raw, almost Albini-like production of opener 'Go Down' onwards, the relentless drive of the title track to the riotous closing of 'Whole Lotta Rosie,' the album exudes a 'do it live' ethos. Bon Scott's raucous vocals and the band's frenetic guitars and driving rhythms push the limits of their musical abilities, resulting in a sound that's both unapologetically aggressive and irresistibly engaging. With its electrifying execution and high-octane performances, this album not only captures the essence of AC/DC but also makes a compelling case for their influence on the punk movement, landing as it did in 1977.

It's 1977 and AC/DC are not-so-fresh after a spell as the support on Black Sabbath's tour. Looking for a new bassist, after a disagreement over whether to pick Manfred Mann's Colin Pattenden, the band agree on Cliff Williams, who would remain in place until 2003. Recording what became Powerage, their fifth studio album, Atlantic Records soon complained there wasn't a sellable lead single. 'Rock 'n' Roll Damnation' took form, one of the group's outliers, which comes without standard guitar solo but with maracas and hand claps. While this proved divisive among die hard fans, the album itself has gold waiting to be discovered deeper down. 'Gimme A Bullet', for example, has been cited as the finest track the late Bon Scott would write, his lyrical flair and deft metaphorical wit shining through on a tune that won't let up. This was his final LP, and tragically three years later he was no longer with us, marking an end to the group's iconic first chapter.

Review: Frampton Comes Alive? Jeff Mills Live At The Liquid Room? Pah! There is only contender in the park when it comes to the best live album of all time and that's AC/DC's 1978 classic, recorded at the Glasgow Apollo and featuring their original vocalist Bon Scott. From the deft riffing of opener 'Riff Raff' - recently covered by men of the moment Black Midi - to the 12 bar frenzy of traditional closer 'Rocker' via big hitting groovers like 'Bad Boy Boogie' and 'Problem Child' and audience participation-fests like 'The Jack' and 'Whole Lotta Rosie', this is dripping in crowd atmospherics, improvised solos and big walls of riffs. Just about as great an advert for live music as ever existed.

Folds' clever songwriting shines throughout the album as he weaves poignant lyrics with catchy melodies and infectious hooks. From the anthemic 'Brick' to the playful 'Kate,' each track showcases the band's unparalleled musicianship and dynamic range. The album's raw emotion and authenticity still resonate and create an intimate connection that transcends its era. It is the rich harmonies, memorable tunes and heartfelt storytelling that make this one such a classic in the alternative rock genre.

Review: Following on from last year's triumphant return to pop-punk glory that was Blink-182's ninth overall full-length One More Time (yet seventh with original vocalist/guitarist Tom DeLonge and first since 2011's Neighbourhoods), the band return to remind fans that the extensive good will they've been awarded by their devout followers on this comeback is very much reciprocated. Too early to drop another full-length, yet clearly rejuvenated to the point that new material keeps rearing its head during their continuing global tour, the trio opt to meet themselves in the middle with One More Time Part 2, which is essentially a mega deluxe version complete with ten bonus tracks, adding an additional half hour of new material (a new album in pop-punk terms). Boasting refined anthems such as 'No Fun' and 'All In My Head', while making room for darker synth-laden moments such as 'Can't Go Back' and even more Box Car Racer indebted buzzsaw post-hardcore in the form of 'Everyone Everywhere', this definitive collection offers far more than a forgettable batch of cutting room floor B-sides, and provides a comforting notion that this (one more) time around, Blink are back for themselves and the creative reward as much as for the fans and the payday.

Review: The sixth studio album from US rockers Cage The Elephant arrives after a turbulent time for the band. Deaths of loved ones, a lead singer arrested then hospitalised, and the slow mental recovery from our collective free fall during the pandemic betray just how challenging recent years have been. The remarkable part is these experiences, and the resulting emotions, have been thoughtfully distilled into Neon Pill. A record that's just as much of a rollercoaster ride, we veer between the funk-laden 'Ball & Chain', the garage-y title track, gritty romanticism of 'Float Into the Sky', and rousing, lo-fi closer, 'Over Your Shoulder'. Scarcely stopping for breath, the ideas come thick, fast, and varied - leaving us feeling like we've been on an odyssey of psyche-blues-post-punk-indie. A combination that can only really sound like Cage the Elephant.

Review: Luke Combs, a prominent figure in contemporary country music, steps away from the mainstream fray with his latest release, Fathers & Sons. Amidst the competitive landscape dominated by lengthy albums from stadium-fillers, Combs takes a refreshing turn. This 12-song acoustic concept album dives deep into the timeless theme of paternal bonds. Fathers & Sons stands as Combs' most authentic and lyrically compelling work to date, embracing a traditional country sound that resonates with heartfelt sincerity. Co-written by a talented team including Lori McKenna, Jessi Alexander, Rob Snyder, and Erik Dylan, the album strikes a delicate balance between sentimentality and raw emotional depth. Each track, enriched by contributions from musicians like Sam Bush, Bryan Sutton and Charlie Worsham, creates a contemplative atmosphere akin to a serene Sunday morning. While some moments may veer into sentimentality, the album overall delivers a poignant exploration of fatherhood's various facetsifrom joyful homecomings to poignant reflections on loss and separation. Combs' ability to capture profound human connections through his music while offering a compelling narrative that transcends the typical country music formula is both refreshing and needed.

Review: 'Luck and Strange' was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour's first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with alt-J and Marika Hackman, with lyrics mostly written by Polly Samson, Gilmour's co-writer for the past thirty years. The album features eight new tracks along with a beautiful reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers' 'Between Two Points', which sees Romany Gilmour, who performs backing vocals across the album, on vocals and harp. Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt & Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry & Roger Eno on keyboards and the string and choral arrangements are by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 during a 'Barn Jam' at David's house. The album's cover image, photographed and designed by renowned artist Anton Corbijn, is inspired by lyrics written by Charlie Gilmour for the album's final song 'Scattered'.

Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Ision (Blu-Ray)
Review: There has long been an obsession in rock circles with Jimi Hendrix's fourth, unreleased album, a set he imagined to be a double or triple set and recorded a wealth of tracks for in the New York studio he created, Electric Lady Studios, over ten months in 1969-70. This fantastic box set, comprising three CDs, a Blu-ray featuring a new documentary and 5.1 surround sound mixes, and a booklet full of contextualising liner notes, tells the story of Hendrix's final recording sessions in full. Some 29 tracks of the 38 on show - a mixture of studio demos, completed tracks, alternative versions and jams (including one astonishing, 26-minute medley) - have never been released before. Properly remastered and mixed, it offers an authoritative glimpse of what would have undoubtedly become a classic rock album.

The set includes 20 new 5.1 surround sound mixes of First Rays of the New Rising Sun and three bonus tracks, along with a Blu-ray of the acclaimed documentary detailing the studio's creation. The set also includes previously unreleased versions of songs such as 'Angel [Take 7],' which come from Hendrix's final creative months before his death but show he still had that same magic he always had.

Review: A true classic, British Steel would serve as the sixth full-length from British metal titans Judas Priest and is often considered to be their crowning achievement. Referred to by Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly) as the "essential thrash metal; I'm sure you can ask Metallica, if it wasn't for British Steel they wouldn't be here", and with notable footage of the aforementioned Metallica members James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett rocking (nerding) out at a recent Priest headline show, it's really no big secret how lofty of regard this razor-riffed gem is still held today. Boasting their iconic hit single and easily one of the best metal openers of all time with 'Breaking The Law' (which due to the lack of digital sampling at the time the band had to use analogue recording of smashing milk bottles for the desired sound effects), as well as mammoth cuts such as 'Metal Gods' (a subtle omen), and 'Living After Midnight', British Steal still breathes the like giant it is that welcomes all subsequent thrash metal acts to rest on their intimidating shoulders. Repressed on limited lush black and white splattered vinyl for National Album Day 2024.

Review: It's been almost 15 years since Kasabian were awarded the Q Awards 'Best Act in the World Today', and 27 years since the Leicester lads first got together. Rising to fame through their riotous version of boisterous indie rock, informed by electronica as much as Britpop's ferocity, we always knew they would eventually soften and become less swagger-ish, a transition that seems to be in full effect on Happenings, their second record without the presence of lead singer Tom Meighan. Their poppiest effort to date is still powerful stuff - there are choruses and chords here big enough to fill six Wembley Arenas, and other mammoth venues they've packed with lager-throwing disciples. More than enough to keep the old guard onside, Happenings also has plenty to win over new followers befitting the band's new era.

Review: Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Jollification by The Lightning Seeds returns on a stunning 'Jump Into The Blue' marbled vinyl. Known as the band's most successful album, it houses hit singles like 'Lucky You', 'Perfect', and 'Change'. Ian Broudie's knack for crafting irresistibly catchy, guitar-driven pop shines throughout, with each track offering its own earworm-worthy melody. The upbeat and infectious 'Lucky You', is brimming with joyful energy, while 'Perfect' creates a dreamy atmosphere with its lush instrumentation. The production may lean into the sweeter side of Britpop, but that's part of its charm. Broudie's smooth vocals and layers of harmonies and synths add a warmth and optimism to each song, making the album a breezy, feel-good listen. Other tracks like 'Marvellous' and 'Feeling Lazy' highlight his playful lyricism, with a sound that's both polished and nostalgic. Though some moments are more whimsical than others, the album remains a beloved pop masterpiece. Jollification is packed with vibrant, sing-along tunes that make for an uplifting listening experienceiperfect for any fan of infectious, feel-good music.

Review: The Lightning Seeds' 1999 album Tilt signaled a departure from their cheery indie-pop origins, embracing a more electronic vibe and delving into deeper lyrical themes. Collaborating with talents like Terry Hall, Stephen Jones, and Mike Pickering, and under the production guidance of Simon Rogers (with Tim Simenon overseeing "Get It Right"), the album unveils a shift towards a somber, introspective musical landscape. Despite garnering acclaim for its bold experimentation, especially evident on singles such as 'Life's Too Short' and 'Sweetest Soul Sensations', "Tilt" faced commercial challenges, prompting Ian Broudie to put the band on hiatus thereafter. This record captures a pivotal moment for The Lightning Seeds, navigating uncharted musical waters while staying true to their knack for crafting resonant melodies and thought-provoking compositions that resonate deeply with listeners.

Review: Cloudcuckooland, the 1990 debut by The Lightning Seeds, is a delightful exploration of nerd-pop, infused with whimsical and earnest lyricism. Spearheaded by Ian Broudie, the album features 12 tracks that blend imaginative daydreams with Casio presets, creating a twee, sentimental atmosphere. The standout track, 'Pure,' achieved significant success, charting in both the UK Top 20 and the US Billboard Top 40. Its gentle strumming, synth arpeggios, and Broudie's evocative lyrics evoke a sense of innocent love. The follow-up single, 'All I Want,' continues this trend with its protective, poetic tone and toy harpsichord melodies. While some tracks, like 'Control the Flame' and 'Bound in a Nutshell,' experiment with genre to unique results, others, such as 'Joy' and 'Frenzy,' offer catchy synth-pop moments. Though not as danceable as contemporaries, Cloudcuckooland remains charming for its dainty sentiments and hopeful suitor's perspective, making it a timeless piece of twee pop.

Review: With their almost-sickly sweet vocals and incredibly catchy riffs, it's safe to say The Lighting Seeds were pop personified for a while - and this, their second studio album and a follow up to the acclaimed Cloudcuckooland, was right at the height of that period. One listen to opener and title track, 'Sense', should be enough to invoke memories of a bygone era in music, at least in those who were actually there, while the follow up, 'Life Of Riley', will bring back more vivid recollections thanks to that gold-standard guitar hook. Listening to this simply as a retro or nostalgic exercise isn't really fair, though. Framing Sense as a record worthy of reappraisal reveals a lot about what really captured attention and imagination at the time. These background details that add depth and resonance to otherwise relatively light arrangements betray Iain Broudie's storied track record as a studio producer.

Review: The Lightning Seeds' Dizzy Heights is a shining example of mid-90s Brit-pop brilliance. Led by the talented Ian Broudie, known for his production work with Echo & The Bunnymen, this album beautifully blends light pop-rock with majestic acoustics and New Order/Pet Shop Boys-esque keyboards. While the music exudes a happy and upbeat vibe, Broudie's lyrics reveal a deeper, more introspective side. Songs like 'Touch And Go' and 'Imaginary Friends' explore themes of friendship and loneliness, adding layers of emotional depth. The track 'Waiting For Today To Happen,' co-written by Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers, is a poignant piece likely influenced by the disappearance of Richey Edwards. The cover of 'You Showed Me' is both chilling and sexy, offering a fresh take on a classic song. Despite a consistent sound throughout the album, each track brings its unique charm. Dizzy Heights is perfect for those moments when you want elegant pop music that resonates emotionally. While it might not revolutionize the genre, its sheer listenability and thoughtful composition make it a standout in any music collection.

Review: "This could stand a little more bite," The Chicago Tribune wrote of Cloudcuckooland back in 1990. Suffice to say, Greg Kot hadn't listened to enough by The Lighting Seeds before penning his thoughts on their debut album. As we all know, the Liverpudlian combination of Ian Broudie and Original Mirrors never really had much bite, and instead preferred to float on the wave of sweet and often soft indie pop. Nevertheless, despite the lack of weight and heft, The Lightning Seeds did make a big impact back in the day, with this, their debut album, even managing to bag a spot in the US Top 40. Listening to it now, Broudie's enviable credentials as a producer for the likes of Echo & The Bunnymen, Wall of Voodoo, and the Fall are more than audible in the pitch perfect polish, each tracks boasting that infectious, singalong quality.

Review: The Welsh rock icons' first new studio album since 2021's The Ultra Vivid Lament Door To The River and - remarkably - their 15th studio album. Recorded at their studio in Newport and the legendary Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, produced by regular collaborators Dave Eringa and Loz Williams and mixed by Caesar Edmunds (Beach House/Suede/Wet Leg), the album captures Manics in their melodic prime. James Dean Bradfield's voice is one of the treasures of modern rock - somehow sounding as fresh and powerful as it did in the 90s. On the single 'Decline & Fall' you can hear the immediacy and synths and guitar sounds coming together like a fireworks display celebrating the opening of a new chapter. We even get, if not quite a diss track then certainly a retort song, to a certain Mr Morrissey in the shape of 'Dear Stephen', in which Nicky Wire concocts an imagined belated reply to a postcard he genuinely received from the Smiths singer back in the 80s. The Manics don't have anything to prove at this stage of their career, but the fact they keep knocking it out of the park is astounding. Long may they keep finding this type of form.

Review: This 15th album from The Manic Street Preachers sits snuggly with all the bands' previous releases. Hints of irony, at times it's anthemic, euphoric, one that's difficult to put down and a collection of music that offers hope and belief yet again that the world can and will become a better place. It's an album bookended by songs with Nicky Wire on lead vocals. On opening (title) track 'Critical Thinking' he tells us "It's OK to not be OK!" and to believe in ourselves. 'Decline and Fall' that follows could be one of the best songs the band have written for years. It reminds us of everything we've always demanded from the band, a rousing chorus ready for airing in large arena's (as do many of the songs on this album) and for a selection of music that may have started a little slowly, 'Brushstrokes of Reunion' continues the comforting audio experience these fifty somethings remain capable of providing after over three decades of their existence. This again boasts another infectious chorus you want to be singing long to after just a single listen. Then we're back with Nicky Wire singing on 'Hiding in Plain Sight', his best vocal performance on the album and 'Dear Stephen', a heartfelt message to Morrissey (but one 'with no moral judgement' according to the writer) inspired by a postcard sent from Morrissey in the early 1980's. The following track 'Being Baptised' boasts a guitar sounding not a million miles away from one Johnie Marr would have put his name to. The second half mirrors the first half dozen songs. 'My Brave Friend' and 'Out Of Time' Revival are certainly songs worthy of being a singles, 'Deleted Scenes' is another arena ready anthem and Late Day Peaks recognisers a decline in the creative industry ("So move indoors, be happy to hide, avert your gaze as the cinemas die") - All vintage Manics material that is just as identifiable as everything the band have provided us with in the past. Final track 'OneManMilitia' is a collection of soundbites that could easily have sat comfortably on Generation Terrorists. It's a great way to wrap up the album. Critical Thinking is an album you won't want to put down after first listen, it's the next chapter of the Manic's story, one that still doesn't feel as though it's about to end and there's nothing on this album gives you the feeling they're not ready to let anyone down just yet.

Delving into themes of love, loss, and the complexities of growing older, McAlpine's heartfelt lyrics and captivating vocals resonate deeply with listeners. The album opens with the enchanting 'The Elevator,' setting the tone for what's to come with its harmonious melodies and introspective lyrics. From there, McAlpine navigates through the highs and lows of relationships in tracks like 'Come Down Soon' and 'Like It Tends To Do,' where she grapples with insecurity and uncertainty. Throughout Older, McAlpine's songwriting prowess shines as she candidly explores her personal experiences, including the death of her father and her own struggles with mental health. Tracks like 'All Falls Down' and 'March' offer poignant reflections on grief and resilience, while 'Vortex' delivers a powerful climax with its haunting vocals and stirring instrumentation. With each track, McAlpine expertly crafts a sonic landscape that draws listeners in, weaving together lush instrumentals with her emotive voice. From the tender piano chords to the soaring violins, every element of Older feels purposeful and deeply evocative.

Review: Modest Mouse's Good News for People Who Love Bad News marks its 20th anniversary with a reissue, offering fans a chance to rediscover the album's enduring brilliance. Originally praised for its unique fusion of rock, folk, and indie sensibilities, the album remains a standout in the band's discography. Review: Celebrating its 50th anniversary, this iconic release - arguably one of if not THE msot famopus rock album of all time - gets an anniversary edition remastering, bringing its revolutionary sound into sharp focus while maintaining the spirit of its original recording. The remaster captures the depth and complexity of the band's vision, from the eerie pulses of 'Speak To Me' that lead into the tranquil yet ominous 'Breathe (In The Air),' to the iconic synth-driven chaos of 'On the Run.' The haunting 'Time' sounds even more immersive, its ticking clocks and swelling synths fully realised in this updated mix. And then there's the unparalleled vocal energy of 'The Great Gig in the Sky,' which now resonates with even greater emotional intensity. On the second side, 'Money' continues to provide that inescapable groove, its jazzy bassline never failing to captivate. 'Us and Them' brings with it a sense of melancholy and philosophical reflection, while 'Any Colour You Like' serves as an entrancing bridge before the chilling introspection of 'Brain Damage' leads into the album's climactic conclusion, 'Eclipse.' For both long-time fans and newcomers, this remaster offers an opportunity to hear the album as it was always meant to be heard, with every nuance and every note given the space it deserves.

Review: Prefab Sprout's Jordan: The Comeback stands as their most ambitious work, now reissued on stunning translucent blue and red vinyl. This expansive double LP, produced by Thomas Dolby, is divided into four thematic movements, blending pop, samba, and Steely Dan-esque sophistication. Tracks like 'Wild Horses', 'We Let the Stars Go', and 'Looking for Atlantis' showcase Paddy McAloon's mastery of both melody and lyrical depth. The album explores wide-ranging themesifrom the myth of Elvis Presley's resurrection to the complexities of love, heartbreak, and spiritual redemption. The Elvis suite is a highlight, filled with symbolic references to his life and legacy. Ending on a redemptive note with 'Doo Wop in Harlem', Jordan takes listeners on a journey through McAloon's introspective world. This vibrant reissue only enhances its legendary status.

Memphis is the definitive collection of Elvis Presley's hometown recordings, capturing over 111 tracks from his earliest sessions at Sun Studio to his final recordings in Graceland's Jungle Room. Produced by Ernst Jorgensen, with new mixes by Grammy-winner Matt Ross-Spang, this comprehensive set reveals Elvis' deep connection to Memphis. From the groundbreaking rock 'n' roll at Sun Studio to the heartfelt performances at American Sound in 1969, Memphis showcases Elvis' artistic evolution. The 1973 Stax sessions highlight his emotional depth during personal struggles, while the live show at the Mid-South Coliseum in 1974, complete with a full orchestra, underscores his enduring stage presence. The stripped-down Jungle Room sessions of 1976 offer an intimate look at Elvis' passion and perseverance despite his declining health. Accompanied by insightful liner notes from Robert Gordon, this release offers a profound understanding of his enduring bond with the city that shaped him.

Review: Latest from the Elvis Presley reissue/retrospective crock comes Memphis, the first fully comprehensive collection of Elvis Presley's hometown recordings. Yes, the entirety of Memphis was recorded, at one time or another, by the King Of Rock & Roll in the prodigal city sandwiched somewhere between Kentucky and Alabama in the American Midwest. Clocking in at 24 tracks, Memphis captures Presley from his earliest sessions at Sun Studio - which occurred 70 years ago this summer - to American Studio and Stax sessions, his 1974 hometown show and his final recordings in Graceland's Jungle Room.

Review: Santana's Supernatural, turning 25, remains a landmark album despite its time-stamped sound. Released on blue vinyl, this Grammy-winning 1999 record catapulted Santana back into mainstream fame. The album's success is anchored by the ubiquitous hit 'Smooth' featuring Rob Thomas, whose infectious Latin rock groove still resonates. Tracks like 'Corazon Espinado' with Mana, and 'Migra' retain the classic Santana flair, blending Latin rhythms with rock elements. However, many guest-heavy tracks, such as 'Maria Maria' produced by Wyclef, feel more like a pop compilation than a cohesive album. While Supernatural may not be a favorite for fans of Santana's experimental 70s work, its commercial triumph allowed Carlos Santana the freedom to explore new musical territories in subsequent projects. This duality of artistic compromise and subsequent liberation makes Supernatural a pivotal album in Santana's illustrious career. One of the most successful albums of the past 25 years, this album is enjoyable regardless of what genre or style of music you like.

Review: Sony Records has decided to reissue a slew of early albums from British shoegaze and dream pop sorts Slowdive, a band that has enjoyed a successful comeback since reforming late last decade. Here they take us back to the formative years of the Reading-born band and 1991 full-length debut Just For a Day. Recorded in leafy Oxfordshire (Abington specifically), the set is as lush, densely layered, effects-laden and gently psychedelic as you'd expect from a set that's (rightly) still regarded as one of the strongest shoegaze albums of all time. For proof, check the hypnotic, slow-motion pulse of opener 'Spanish Air', the low slung bass and hallucinatory textures of 'Catch The Breeze', the near-ambient immersion of 'Erik's Song', and the jangly sparkle of 'Brightness'.

Review: While now - rightly - hailed as one of the greatest shoegaze albums of all time, Slowdive's sophomore full-length Souvlaki was initially panned by critics - a fate that also befell the Reading combo's debut Just For a Day. Now remastered and reissued on CD for the first time in years, the 1993 set remains a pleasingly saucer-eyed, heavily layered and decidedly dreamy affair. Musically, it's generally brighter and more jangling than its predecessor, leaning more heavily into the dream-pop end of their sound whilst still retaining the reverb-heavy, suitably psychedelic guitar textures of shoegaze. Highlights include the funky, late 60s nostalgia of '40 Days', the dubby and spaced-out headiness of 'Sing' and the stretched-out heaviness of 'Souvlaki Space Station'.

Review: A nostalgia-packed journey through one of pop music's most exciting years, featuring an impressive lineup of extended and remixed tracks from the decade's biggest stars. This four disc collection brings together a mix of chart-topping anthems, cult classics and dancefloor staples, each in its extended 12" glory. Things start with Wham!'s infectious 'Freedom' (long mix) and keeps the energy high with Culture Club's politically charged 'The War Song' (Ultimate dance mix). New Order's 'Thieves Like Us' and Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder's 'Together In Electric Dreams' add a synth-laden sheen, while Eurythmics' haunting 'Sexcrime (Nineteen Eighty-Four)' is a bold statement piece. As the tracklist moves on, iconic tracks like Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'Relax' (New York mix) and Duran Duran's 'The Reflex' (dance mix) capture the decade's indulgent soundscape. Meanwhile, softer gems like Talk Talk's 'It's My Life' (extended mix) and Echo & The Bunnymen's 'Silver (Tidal Wave)' provide balance. Closing with Paul McCartney's heartfelt 'No More Lonely Nights' (extended) and the ever-catchy 'Somebody's Watching Me' by Rockwell, this compilation offers a comprehensive snapshot of 1984's pop brilliance. Having these extended versions together in one set is more than a greatest hits package - it's like having all the maxi singles together like an experienced DJ ready to rock a party.

Review: It's never easy to have a huge breakthrough single and then keep the momentum. But Tom Walker, who shot to massive fame and acclaim through the 2018 hit 'Leave A Light On', seems to have managed it pretty well considering he's gone five years between first record, What A Time To Be Alive, and the September 2024 follow-up, I Am. That's an age in modern music's relentless march and production line gutter ethics. I Am is certainly a case of picking up where things left off on the last long form. The track list is a mixture of hyper emotional main stage acoustic-electronic pop balladry, and quiet piano-vocal solos seemingly poised over your bleeding body, ready to cut heartstrings with a love letter from the loss of your life. Elsewhere, EDM and hip hop-hued uptempo numbers make a similarly big impression. Comparisons to Ed Sheeran still ring true, then, but that's not to say there's nothing new happening here.

Review: Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds - The New Generation revisits the 1978 classic with a fresh cast, packing a powerful punch. This updated version, like the original, evokes the feel of an old-style radio drama, now narrated by Liam Neeson. His softer Celtic tone contrasts Richard Burton's original sombre delivery, although his cues are sometimes overshadowed by repetitive music. Notable contributions include Gary Barlow's plaintive 'Forever Autumn,' Joss Stone's thoughtful 'The Spirit of Man,' and Ricky Wilson's fervent ''Brave New World.' The revamped instrumentation and eerie new Martian music add a modern twist, yet the piece retains its grandiose symphonic rock roots. The music recalls early Rice/Lloyd Webber and John Barry's film scores, blending nostalgia with innovation. The sound recording delivers a hefty impact, perfect for the UK tour celebrating H.G. Wells, the father of science fiction. Now available on double vinyl, this release honors the timeless appeal of Wells' visionary work while introducing it to a new generation.
