DJ Hell Presents My Definition Of House (Part 3)
Cat: GIGOLO 186. Rel: 20 Oct 06
33 1/3 Queen - "Searchin'"
Earth People - "Reach Up To Mars"
Review: With this the 3rd instalment of Hell's my definition of house 12" series, two new massive Gigolo old-school tracks are resurrected for the pleasure of a modern listening public. In 1986, three young DJs began making music on a 4-track recorder in a Baltimore basement studio. Little did they know at the time that more than 15 years later they would be viewed as pioneers of American dance music. 33 1/3 Queen (aka Basement Boys aka Jay Ateinhour, Reddy Souglas, and Thommy Davis) took samples of A Guy Called Gerald's classic "Blow Your House Down" (originally released in 1988) and made their single "Searchin'" which quickly turned out to be an underground club favourite. To date, the boys have remixed songs such esteemed acts as Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, The Shamen, Angie Stone, Lenny Kravitz and Paula Abdul. In addition, they continue to expose and nurture new talents on their own label, Basement Boys Records, which was established in 1995. The Basement Boys have been responsible for some of clubland's biggest anthems and their hit "Searchin'" is as relevant today as it was ten years ago. Earth People's (aka Pal Joey) house masterpiece reach up to mars originally released in 1990 on Underworld Records finally gets a re-issue on Gigolo Records. The original with its monster drums shuffling guitars synth stabs great use of vocal samples and incredible production skills still withstands the test of time sounding like it could have been made yesterday. This is classic material here that will destroy any dancefloor!! House maestro Pal Joey released this tune, a funky cross-pollination of garage classics from Toney Lee ("Reach Up") and Dexter Wansel ("Life On Mars"), in 1990, and you have to thank Hell for making it available now once again to a 2006 audience. There's a fine line between classic and dated. Hell knows this well and selects only for his 12" series "My Definition Of House" those which were groundbreaking when they first appeared and still sound hot to 21st century ears. So keep your mind and ears open, for you never know what Hell will dig up from the basement next. Stay tuned for "My Definition Of House part 4"!

Remedy (Josh The Funky 1 & The House Moguls remix)
Review: Asle with this latest 12" from the Funktion label. "Remedy" is a pumping peaktime houser that utilizes a strong vocal from Engelina atop a thumping bed of solid primetime house beats, electro-touched synth lines, bumping bass, and a kickin' piano line. Plenty of mixes to go at here too, as Josh The Funky 1 & The House Moguls go for a grittier, subtly acidic pumper, while The Sucker DJs go for a more old skool vibe, with some great analog twists blended with driving beats and a stellar new bassline.

Wonderlust (short version) (2:44)
Review: Alex Attias is the man behind the El Mustang Project and here he teases his upcoming album with a couple of new tunes on Visions Inc. As always, they find him fusing the organic with the synthetic to make for deep and silky house tunes that straddle genres and ages. 'Love Me Better' opens with a gorgeous vocal and rickety drums that ooze charm. 'Dream Drumz' gets a little more raw and edgy with pixelated melodic spirals and 'Life' gets old school. Cowbells ping about the mix as distorted bass and frazzled pads add texture to this subtle throwback jam.

Review: There's a fair chance you'll already have heard "Cola", experienced production duo Camelphat's collaboration with vocalist Elderbrook. The original version, with its rumbling bass, atmospheric builds, subtle bassline house influence and "she sips the Coca-Cola" refrain, has become something of an anthem since first appearing on digital download earlier in the year. For this first vinyl release, Defected has packaged the now-familiar original mix with a trio of reworks. The most impressive of these comes from German veteran Mousse T. He brilliantly re-casts the track as a bumpin' chunk of celebratory disco-house complete with thrilling piano riffs and an elastic bassline.

Land Of The Monkey Snak (Sampler #2)

Lee Coombs - "Control" (feat Katherine Ellis - Meat Katie remix)
Jem Stone & Elite Force - "Outta Sight"
Review: Well, with his "Land Of The Monkey Snake" compilation and it's first, excellent sampler you can certainly say that Lee Coombs and his Thrust Recordings are in wonderful shape and here he goes again with yet another amazing sampler! Following from Coombs' remix of Steve Bug's "Creeps" and his collaborator Grant Plant, Sampler 2 features yet another all-star line up. First up is a rare collaboration between Elite Force and Jem Stone in the form of "Outta Sight". An almost perfect definition of the term "tech-funk", this snake of a tune wriggles and twists before rearing up and biting with deadly effect. Last, but by no means least, is Coombs himself, this time featuring Katherine Ellis with the fantastic "Control". Remixed by the ever-quality-assured Meat Katie, this is a vocal break/house cut with serious balls, and one which has been slaying crowds at the hands of its makers. If only all compilations and their samplers were like this! DJ Support: The Plump DJs, Meat Katie, Friendly, Chris Carter, Laurent Garnier, Soul Of Man, Nils Noa, Ralph Lawson, Crystal Method, Tayo, Slacker, Rogue Element, Santos, Madox, Elite Force, Jay Cunning, Atomic Hooligan, Soto, Uberzone, Rennie Pilgrim, Satoshi Tomiie, Hector Romero, Vigi, Steve Lawler, Will Brunner, Chris Carter. "Great tracks, the Meat Katie mix works best for us thanks!" - The Plump DJs, "Elite Force track sounds already really good on my computer; looking forward to hear it on a big system" - Lauren Garnier, "Loving the Coombs tune!" - Soul Of Man, " I really like this, will play it at space on Sunday." - Ralph Lawson, "Both of these have a kind of 90s kind of feel. Both will be enormous." - Chris Carter.

Beyond digital releases, they're now diving into vinyl with a series of exclusive drops; the first is a Category 1 Music Sampler, a 12" of four standouts by Terry Dexter, Michael Gray, Dr Packer, Richard Earnshaw, and DJ Spinna. Organic but still well cooked Ibiza house predominates the set menu, whether by way of the ultrasoul wateriness of Terry Dexter's 'You Saved Me' or the tighter but still dreamy entreaties of Shawn Christopher's 'He's Got It', both translated in exquisite mashup form by the likes of Gray and Packer.

Review: This cultured collaboration between Dirty Channels and Eternal Love extends beyond the Italian house scene with their debut single 'Take Me Up.' Featuring the talented vocalist Mariseya, the track's infectious energy is driven by a captivating piano groove that is very much reminiscent of the artists' deep Italian house roots but with all new style added in. Also featuring is a Diano Ross referencing gem in the form of 'I'm Coming Out' which is a pure house bumper for unadulterated good times. It's got loopy drums and string samples as well as sumptuous vocal harmony then Borka & The Gang keep the feel-good vibes alive with 'Kidding Feelings and Even Funkier's' Dance With Your Feet' is another smile-inducing bit of disco warmth with withering sic-fi synths and hip swinging claps. Re Tide & Lukas Setto - "Me & You" (Dr Packer remix) (7:07)
Review: Next up on the Fool's Paradise vinyl sampler is a four-tracker of glitzy and emphatic proportions. Vol. 3 opens with Dr. Packer and Elektrik Disko's 'My Lovin', which vexes us of our infidelities in the promise of being lent "all our love tonight", a vocal motif that swirls endlessly around its discoic mix. Mattei and Omich follow up with exactly the same theme, though it would seem that the former promise has been foreclosed upon, since the central vox is now asking the listener to "just give me your love", with an added dash of urgency to boot, and not the other way round. The B-side, not purely coincidentally, we think, dominated by the producer known as Re-tide, moves much more profligately, abandoning much of the A-side's glamour for the more immediate appetites that drive, but do not temper, disco's soul.

Review: Coming from the Constant Black family but distinctly committed to the evergreen sound of disco, Cardiology is a label committed to club music with heart and soul. First up on this label is Earl, who wastes no time in setting the mood with "The Fantasy", a tastefully funked up house joint with French Touch leanings. "No You Don't" brings the disco to the fore even more, but not at the expense of hard-pumping beats and a killer diva lick or two. "No Speed Limit" is tough and pounding, which makes the sliced up samples dig in all the deeper - you could totally imagine DJ Bone juggling this one to death. "Strictly Real" takes things even further with a spaced out breakbeat speckled bumper lavished with gorgeous string shots - a curious blend that works like a dream.

Inside Out
Inside Out (Groove Junkies Funky dub)
Review: The wealth of goodness continues to flow from Richard Earnshaw's Duffnote camp-this time teaming up with James Vargas for "Inside & Out". Another one of those special moments from the Miami parties, this hefty slice of feel good vocal house gets a rather tasty reworking thanks to that ever impressive Californian duo-The Groove Junkies. Pure smoothness is definitely the order of the day with sweet bubbly bassline, funky beats and lush keys provide the ideal backing for James's sultry vocals. Finally completing the musicalness that dominates Mr Earnshaw's productions, a searing sax solo works in and out adding a real dancefloor edge. Normal service resumed!

Review: REPRESS ALERT: What hasn't been said about this timeless classic that hasn't been already? We'd be preaching to the choir but for what it's worth: Pal Joey's 1990 released, Chic sampling classic "Dance" is one of those tracks that never gets old and always sets the dancefloor alight. In all these years it has been thrown down by NYC house legends and Detroit techno's finest alike. Likewise, your record collection isn't complete without it! Features the energetic original version on the A side, as well as the dub with that nice bass solo section that comes in. Finally, on the flip is the wicked bonus beats version that was favoured by techno DJs and sampled by everyone from Jeff Mills to Jerome Sydenham. Reissued on Joey's own Cabaret Records.

Review: The imperious Athens of the North goes hard with this latest stomping disco thumper from East Coast Love Affair on limited 12". Anyone who has been to the Athens of the North Disco Club at Sneaky Pete's in Edinburgh any time recently will likely have heard these as they are frequent classics there. They always get such good and sweaty reactions that the label has pressed them up - in limited quantities though so don't sleep on it. 'I'm So Glad' is a hard and heavy and steamy banger then 'Miracles' is a more loved up victory lap for end of the night fun.

Get Down (4:25)
Can You Deal (4:41)
Review: Athens Of The North can usually be found honing their expert craft of unearthing nigh impossible to find disco, and reissuing it in the utmost quality. However, the work of East Coast Love Affair (Euan Fryer and Nick Moore) is deceiving, as it adopts the image of one of said reissues while actually being fully contemporary music. 'Get Down' tops up a slew of master-quality releases for the label, expropriating a vocal line from obscure Minneapolis 'lo-fi' band Quiet Storm and putting it back into an entirely new, drunk-and-high instrumental context (think lasers, whistles, funk basses, an overall hazy sound). 'Can You Deal', on the flip, lends Quiet Storm a similar treatment, albeit for a cleverly hi-lo-fi disco house treatment.

East Coast Love Affair - "Love Chug" (7:00)
BDK - "Pure Sass" (6:46)
Review: Love Chug by East Coast Love Affair and BDK delivers two distinct approaches to peak-time dancefloor energy, perfect for any house club setting. Side-1 features 'Love Chug' by East Coast Love Affair, a track that expertly builds with a driving disco vibe. A powerful guitar riff takes the lead, while a filtered hook pushes the sound deep into house territory, creating an immersive experience that evolves throughout. On Side-2, BDK's 'Pure Sass' offers a strong, uplifting house track that borders on gospel house. Its vibrant energy and soulful vibe are reminiscent of classic Jasper Street tracks, making it an irresistible choice for the dancefloor. Together, these tracks provide a dynamic balanceione that builds and one that never lets upiensuring that the energy stays high all night.

Review: Lucy Lee is proud to present 'UNO' the second single of EBBRO, project of Gianluca Pandullo. Gianluca's other projects include I-Robots and Nemesi. I-Robots came into the light with the 'VV.AA.', 'Italo Electro Disco Underground Classics', together with the Nemesi tracks, they have immediately gained support among the most important DJ's around the world and from specialized music press, I-Robot's 'Frau' (produced together with Und from Trapez Records) was included on Ivan Smagghe's Fabric 23 mix CD. Later, Kid Alex produced 2 remixes of the single for his Berlin-based label, Boys Noize. Gianluca Pandulo also released 'Cosmica' which was remixed by the famous neo-disco duo Lindstrom & Prins Thomas.

Do My Thing (Dixon rework)
Your Love
When You Need It
On My Mind
Review: Innervisions continue their exploration of house music's myriad sub-genres with this EP from Berlin-based Ede. The title of the record is instructive, as this breakthrough artist from the label's Secret Weapons series seeks to fuse the unmistakable sound of Detroit with an unabashed pop streak. The vocals are front and centre on these tracks, and they sound absolutely huge when strapped to a stadium-sized remix of 'Do My Thing' from the mighty Dixon on the A1. 'Your Love', 'When You Need It' and 'On My Mind' are equally powerful though, charged with those star-scraping synth lines which make Detroit techno such an eternally cherished sound.

Review: Featured on this double 12-inch is "O Qui Ser Vai" (What's It Gonna Be), recorded for You Global Entertainment's Soul Of Brasil release, sure to hook music lovers even before they realize the track's Portuguese lyrics. Edmon effortlessly moves through Brian McKnight's classic with the aid of spoken word artist Nichelle Holiday. This double 12-inch promo receives the full monty with treatments from the seminal production duo Blaze; West End's Anderson Soares serves up two mixes from south of the border in Sao Paulo; and topping things off with the original mix, this double pack release has just about everything a MAW, Blaze, Osunlade or Spinna head could want.
