Review: Nicola Conte returns to his regular haunt of Far Out for another excursion into sweetest spiritual jazz and jazz funk, steeped in the sound of 70s studio gold and full of feeling. As a veteran of Blue Note, Impulse! and Schema, the Italian artist has a serious legacy behind him, and his series of Brazilian compilations in the Viagem series cemented his deep knowledge for the full global spectrum of jazz. Such spirit comes through in abundance on Umoja as Conte folds elements of Afrobeat and North American jazz into his spiralling, joyous and soul-charged sound, with the likes of Zara McFarlane and Myles Sanko lending their added talents to this outstanding record.

Review: For his latest full-length excursion, veteran bossa and jazz-dance revivalist Nicola Conte has found himself a muse. While it's Conte's composition, production and pitch-perfect playing that provides the canvas, Natural sparkles more than some of his albums due to the vocal presence of Stefania Dipierro. The Italian singer's breathy, sweet and hugely atmospheric delivery - seemingly in a trio of languages - sits somewhere between classic jazz and Astrud Gilberto, a stylistic trait fully in keeping with Conte's jaunty, sun-kissed instrumentation. As a result, Natural sounds like a long lost Brazilian classic - all lilting bossa, sprightly samba, with a sprinkling of summery soul-jazz - despite its' contemporary Italian roots.

Review: Although he made his name primarily as a maker of revivalist bossa and jazz, in recent years Nicola Conte has made several forays into the compilation market to show off his skills as a heavyweight crate digger. His Viagem series, in particular, is worthy of note. This fourth volume continues where 2011's third installment left off, showcasing a decidedly celebratory selection of little-known bossanova and samba-jazz gems from the 1960s. There's a great balance between the two, and plenty of material that will be new to all but the most dusty-fingered of Brazilian collectors (and, of course, Far Out boss Joe Davis). If you have even the slightest interest in Latin jazz, it should be an essential purchase.

Review: Fans of original Brazilian bossa nova have been spoiled recently. Following hot on the heels of Soul Jazz's thrilling collection of 1960s originals, Brazil Bossa Beat is this excellent compilation of similarly vintage Brazilian rarities. While Soul Jazz's set focused entirely on bossa nova, Viagem Vol 3 - compiled by Italian bossa revivalist Nicola Conte - casts its net wider, taking in a fine selection of samba jazz alongside the bossa beats. It's actually these cuts that really hit the spot, with stand-out contributions from such little-known artists as Octoons, Luiz Carlos Sa and Carlos Sondres, whose Afro-flavoured "Samba De Negro" is outstanding.
