Yo Yo Riddim
Cat: BTG 001. Rel: 02 Jun 16
Etch - "Yo Yo Riddim" (4:58)
Etch - "Yo Yo Riddim" (Gantz remix) (3:52)
Ilk - "Yes, Ruff!" (6:17)
Ilk - "Yes, Ruff!" (Moresounds remix) (4:34)
Review: Bun The Grid: a fine adage for us all to live by and an exciting new label from Etch and Ilk. Focusing on the experimental pastures between bass, dubstep, hip-hop, jungle, halftime and UKG there's a free-spirited anything-goes attitude from the off. "Yo Yo Riddim" is a stop/start halftime jam with a slight whiff of Scrilla to the aesthetic while Gantz completely shreds the blends and turns it inside out. "Yes" leans heavier on a jungle stance with its sinewy amen flurries and ominous bass drones while French man-of-the-moment Moresounds does his deep dark thing for the rub. There's no messing around with this label launch... A strong sign of things to come.

Cat: FBFWD 002. Rel: 26 Feb 25
Now Eh! (Sascha Muller & Baze.djunkiii Mental Inertia remix) (4:47)
Review: Heavyweight global fusion... This vinyl only release began on a South African label (Sneja), was composed by a Colombian artist (IAM JDP) and is now being remixed by two respected German producers Sascha Muller and baze.djunkiii. That's before we even get to the actual sonic melting pot. Spacious and intoxicating, doffing its cap to Jamaican soundsystem, US footwork sounds, Latin Baile and South African gqom elements in the percussion and fat dollops of Bristolian bass; Sascha and baze have cooked up something super special here. Limited and unifying.

Caffeine Dream (7:26)
Gold (4:18)
Light Armour (4:46)
Microfunk Lament (3:22)
Hawksworth Woods (7:29)
Review: It's been a long time between drinks for Leeds lad Iglew, a producer whose last significant release of any sort came way back in 2015. There's a definite "making up for lost time" feel about this comeback EP on Wisdom Teeth, a five-track set that pulls UK bass in a myriad of different directions, all of which are hugely attractive. Check first opener 'Caffeine Dream', a mutant techno excursion full of beefy sub-bass, trippy electronics and hazy chords, before admiring the weighty depth and dreaminess of the leisurely, hot stepping 'Gold'. Elsewhere, 'Light Armour' is a delightful dab of instrumental experimental synth-pop, 'Microfunk Lament' sounds like Akufen-style micro-house and 'digital disco' given a 2021 twist, and 'Hawksworth Woods' is a chiming ambient delight.

Review: The buzz surrounding UK producer Imami has developed to the point Apothecary have promoted this debut EP from digital to vinyl. Beautiful white vinyl at that. Refusing to sit still, each of the five tracks here tickles a different corner of the dance with detail. From the stuttering jacks and Classic Records style wonk of "Melted Love" and the uncompromising techno tenacity of "Skellies" to the lush west coast sleaze-funk of "Ghost2Ghost", debut EPs are seldom so successfully extensive. Rich in creativity, expect big things from Imami in the near future.

Winbread (ALXZNDER version) (3:40)
Winbread (Somah version) (2:53)
Review: Bristol's Hodl Tight crew make their first foray into the vinyl world here with a new and heavy EP from Inner Echo Ft Redders & Buggsy. The label has long aimed to serve up the best in new music inspired by roots and dub culture and continue in that fine tradition here. 'Winbread' is a fresh contemporary cut with hi-speed and grimy vocal deliveries, tight flows and plenty of references to modern culture while swaggering beats and a fluttering flute bring the vibes. An instrumental is included for more heads down dance floors and ALXZNDER offers a darker version while Somah makes it smooth and deep.

Echidna VIP (4:50)
LIA (5:16)
Program (4:42)
Peregrine (5:31)
Review: On his first full EP release and already steeped in praise from Duploc and Trusik, US newcomer Inyoka is making all the right noises. Here are four cases in point: the tripped out vocal sample dynamic on the VIP of "Echidna", the spacey funk and slurring soul of "LIA", the groaning, unsettling harmonic machine tones and sudden human vocal splash of "Program" and the rolling tech-laced stepper "Peregrine", Inyoka has set out his stall with clarity. We can't wait to hear what he brings next.

Deadeadead (1:59)
Phix (feat Gantz) (2:26)
Review: Previously spotted on Boomarm Nation, Turkish bass experimentalists make their debut on Innamind's Blacklist imprint with four of the nuttiest, most far-out tracks you'll hear this season. Sitting somewhere between Modeselektor and Squarepusher but with dubbier roots, highlights include the tripped out harmonic headiness of "Heavy Machyn Gun" and "Phix", the slo-mo white knuckle ride with fellow Turk Gantz. Off the planetary hook.

Re Entry
The Flood
Froze Up
Review: Ital Tek joins the likes of Reso and Starkey and jumps to Civil with four brand new flavours - each one as sparkling, uplifting and rhythmically complex as his ace body of work on Planet Mu. Sonically smelting the best aspects of juke, dubstep, techno and good old fashioned electronica, each moment on "Hyper Real" is an urgent call to the dancefloor while giving your mind plenty to chew on: "Hyper Real" reaches for the sun without any protective clothing whatsoever, "Re Entry" is more somnambulant shuffle that gets interrupted by a massive classic electro bass riff. "The Flood" looks to Detroit for inspiration while "Froze Up" takes a techno tablet. Let's get real now people; hyper real!

Weaving Dub (6:31)
To The Club (5:44)
Pushin' (6:47)
Ruff Elements (3:34)
Review: Following Mr G and Stingray's hefty refix session, the ID crew lay down four more dot-joining exercises between tempos and techniques. "Weaving Dub" is a future flexback to jungle's heady formative era, "To The Club" is a dub house gem with a winningly awkward vocal texture used as a hook. "Pushin'" takes us deeper into the sub swamp with rolling broken beats and layers of squelchy lava bass while "Russ Elements" takes us back to the 170 zone with a dynamic that places the hook about a mile ahead of the faraway drums. Woozy, weird and wonderful.

U Smart (with Tim Parker) (4:10)
Spooky Dub (3:59)
Berlusconi (3:24)
Review: Stray, Sabre and Halogenix cannot do anything wrong right now. Their actions on the very frontier of halftime are causing ripples so deep we won't even understand their effects for a few years. "Fortuna" is their largest body of work since their debut album last year; the sci-fi neo-soul of "Can't Say No", the far-away metallic clanks and bangs of the title track (with Alix Perez), the sticky gooey weirded out wonks of "Salt Toffee", the 22nd century gangster jam "U Smart", the haunted harmonics and twisted church bells of "Spooky Dub" and the muffled operatics of "Berlusconi".... Sounds as far-out and far-thought as these can't be found anywhere else right now.

TOYC - "Kicks" (Deft remix) (3:57)
Itoa - "Snake Pass" (4:45)
Itoa - "Snake Pass" (Etch remix) (4:33)
Review: It's time, once again, to bun the system and go feral for a spell as Etch & Bulu's imprint returns with another far-out bass/beat communique. Toyc's "Kicks" really does what the title promises with this rising bass tone that wouldn't have sounded amiss on a Plasticman record 20 years ago. Remix-wise Deft removes the tech traces and adds a whole cavern of alienating, creeped out tones. Itoa cooks on more of a jungle heat but cleverly buries the beats beneath layers of rhythmic elements and a ghostly chord sequence in the background. Etch dusts of his harp and jumpiest kicks for ultimate honours. Not to be bunned.

Hazefield (feat Sweyn J & Jessy Lanza)
Review: It's been a while since Ikonika dropped a full-length excursion. In fact, Distractions is her first album since 2013. It largely sticks to the bass-heavy fusion script she's been perfecting since making her debut on Hyperdub back in 2008. That means attractive and weighty R&B and hip-hop beats, aural ticks lifted from techno, the surging low-end movements that mark out British-made dance music, and occasional blasts of boogue-flavoured synth riffs. Pleasingly, the guest list of vocalists and collaborators includes MC Jammz, Andrea Galaxy, Jessy Lanza and Night Slugs' Sweyn Jupiter, all of who make fine contributions to enhance Ikonika's "futurist and industrial" approach.

Review: More bass therapy courtesy of the Tectonic camp. This time Jack Gibbons aka Ipman (who has previously collaborated with Killawatt) debuts and delivers some serious darkside power. Wasting no time, he launches into his full frontal attack with the junglised strength of "Regicide" while there's typical label fair in the form of the tough, four to the floor stomp of "Technicolor" and "Last One In The". "IPA" is far from the acronym you'd think; there's nothing drunk about this grinding, building slow mo techno jam. Ending things nicely is the dark, brooding epic "Strong Ones" with its angelic female vocals backed by the dichotomy of sombre church organs and a body bashing beat.

Restless Tundra (feat Anneka)
Review: Following on from his debut artist album Cyclical in 2008, Brighton based producer, Ital Tek brings us his sophomore outing, Midnight Colour on the highly respected Planet Mu imprint. Kicking off with "Neon Arc" - a deliciously fuzzy broody number, with a nod to the Joker-style 'Bristol Sound' in the synths - it's a promising start to what soon unfolds into a magnificent album. Moving through the melodic, reflective Mount Kimbie style "Talis" with its evocatively drawn dripping and chiming, and hollow textured soundscape, to the more abrasive "Moonbow" and "Babylon", it's easy to see why Ital Tek has garnered such a reputation for himself in such a short time. Midnight Colour picks up on the sound that has come to define Ital Tek, taking the whole 'post-dubstep' tip to new lengths, weaving 2-stepping garage rhythms round sonic textures with plenty of moody atmospheric melancholy.

Review: Planet Mu usher in the return of Ital Tek and a new sonic approach for the long-term label associate, as Hollowed finds Alan Myson switching up his approach. The chance to immerse himself in a new studio set up was the impetus for Myson to engage in laying down countless hours' worth of loops, drones and textures. It is apparently a method he used as a teenager, but armed with years of recording experience he was now able to make the record he had then envisaged. Fans of the crisp style of dubstep Ital Tek made his name on might be a bit taken aback by this new direction, but there is plenty of fine music to explore here for those that like their sounds abstract and impressionistic.
