Reflektion Tapes 001
Cat: RTAPES 001. Rel: 15 Feb 17
Mizz Beats & Von D - "Dot Compulsion" (6:35)
Mr Lager & Von D - "Some Other Place" (4:08)
Review: For their debut 12", freshly minted label Reflektion Tapes has pulled off something of a coup by signing up Von D, a storied producer who has released killer material on such imprints as Apron, Trojan Audio, Sub Freq and Black Acre. On this outing, the Frenchman showcases a pair of collaborative tracks. On the A you'll find "Dub Compulsion", a deliciously soulful, organic sounding hook-up with Deep Medi and Eglo sort Mizz Beats. While the crispy beats and bassline and suitably heavy, it's the wavering vocal samples and sparkling keys that really catch the ear. Former Diagrams man Mr Lager lends a hand on side two's "Some Other Place", a deep space fusion of delay-laden percussion hits, ultra-deep bass and swirling, intergalactic atmospherics.

NOOD 5
NOOD 5 (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: NOOD 5. Rel: 20 Oct 21
Ossia - "Drum Tangle" (5:25)
Pessimist - "The Price Of Oil" (6:08)
Katatonic Silentio - "Static Whip" (6:29)
Cleyra - "Twined" (5:25)
Valesuchi - "Autopoietic Unboxing" (6:27)
Epsilove & Ployer Fower - "Auguries Of Innocence" (6:16)
Review: Since launching six years ago, Bristol radio station Noods has become something of an online institution, with pleasingly experimental-minded shows from local music heads being joined by essential guest shows from up-and-coming DJs and producers from around the world. Earlier this year they finally launched their own label, which aims to showcase new talent, and here deliver a superb mini-album that was initially intended to drop on the station's fifth birthday. There's much to enjoy, from the murky, dub-wise percussion-fest that is Ossia's 'Drum Tangle' and the break-neck, post-jungle insanity of 'Static Whip' by Katatonic Silencio, to the psychedelic ambience of Ployer Fower's 'Aguries of Innocence' and the gently melodious, sub-heavy shuffle of Cleyra's 'Twined'.

The Nine Bows EP
VARIOUS
The Nine Bows EP (vinyl 12")
Cat: SCCUCCI 009. Rel: 21 Jul 14
Aashton - "I Can't Shake It"
Maverick - "Wait For U"
Jackson Ryland - "Tandem Tech"
Marsupials - "Glider"
Montel - "Lemme Hold U"
Mr Kavalicious - "Moving To You"
Mikki Funk - "Love Inside"
B Moe - "Gambino"
Review: Ah the humble double pack, isn't there something so very satisfying about this format? Sccucci Manucci evidently thinks so as The Nine Bows EP is the label's second release in succession to embrace the double pack. It's another high profile cast that contribute to the eight tracks here, with Montel, Mikki Funk, Jackson Ryland and Aashton all featuring. It's the latter, Brighton-based producer who opens proceedings with "I Can't Shake It", a summer house anthem in the making that showcases his love of a classic RnB vocal. Maverick follows with "Wait For U" which is not only his Sccucci debut but also the Parisian's first production committed to wax - hard to believe! The mood swings through various shades of house from here with "Lemme Hold U" from Montel a mid point highlight thanks to a killer vocal hook.

Luke Vibert - "Africable" (4:38)
Clap! Clap! - "Kulira" (3:55)
With You - "No Resistance" (5:07)
Review: Beating Heart has shared the late Hugh Tracey's archive at the International Library of African Music (ILAM) with contemporary producers and keeping in line with Tracey's vision, all proceeds will be used to assist people in the areas where the music was originally recorded. This time, Warp Records and all round UK electronica legend Luke Vibert gives us the delightful oddball groove that is "Africable", Italian DJ Clap! Clap! Gives us the African polyrhythms via Detroit high-tech soul on "Kulira" while Los Angeles duo With You give us the sublime "No Resistance". Each 1500 albums sold will feed a school of 500 forever! Support a great cause and feed your ears with some wonderful music while you're at it.

Flamingo Hangover
Cat: MWB 005. Rel: 29 Dec 16
Flamingo Hangover (5:30)
Dance Of The Harpy (6:45)
Review: Here's something for fans of dancefloor Afro-futurism to savour: a surprise studio hook-up between Dutch live combo Umeme Afrorave, and Berlin-based drum machine polyrhythm fiends Africaine 808. Both tracks are as vibrant and entertaining as you'd expect. A-side "Flamingo Hangover" doffs a cap to original Trinidadian disco, with bold steel drum melodies and woozy, tumbling synth lines rising above a killer dancehall-disco groove. On the flip, Africaine 808's obsession with tough, testy drums and throbbing, UK-style bass comes to the fore. While these elements are counterpointed by chiming, bell-like lead lines, it's the heaviness of the rhythm track that makes the track so appealing.

Sarah Farina & Yo Van Lenz - "Peace Dub"
Fadi Mohem - "Endless"
Review: It would be fair to say that few "big name" electronic acts are quite as committed to pushing the envelope as Berlin duo Modeselektor. If you're still dubious, then check this fourth volume in their ongoing Modeselektion compilation series, which is packed with bonkers and mind-mangling cuts. Boasting the first fresh Modeselektor cut since 2015 - the left-of-centre acid techno insanity of "Kalif Storch" - the two-disc set is packed full of genre-mangling, boundary-pushing exclusives from the likes of Actress, Italian techno pioneer Lory D, Skee Mask, Brainwaltzera, rRoxymore and Vatican Shadow. There's little in the way of relaxed home listening fare, either: this is balls-out experimental club music right out of the top drawer.

The past few years have seen the label refocus efforts on the cutting edge of electronic music with the likes of Powell, MssingNo, Zomby, Mumdance & Novelist and Special Request jumping on board. Young Turks 2014

Sampha - "Too Much"
Sbtrkt - "New Dorp New York" (feat Ezra Koenig)

FKA Twigs - "Two Weeks"
Sampha - "Answer"
Sbtrkt - "Tamagochi"
Quirke - "Acid Beth"
Jamie XX - "Sleep Sound"
FKA Twigs - "One Time"
Review: As the title suggests, this ten track LP from West London hub Young Turks pulls together highlights of the label's output in 2014 and presents it in rather dashing fashion. There's naturally much to admire, from the sparse and atmospheric outsider electronica of FKA Twigs' anthem-like "Two Weeks", and leftfield 4/4 dark-funk of SBTRKT's "New Dorp, New York" (featuring the distinctive vocals of Ezra Koening), to the delicate downtempo textures and dub-soaked rhythms of Jamie XX. Throw in a slice of immersive, left-of-centre bass music (Quirke's "Break A Mirrored Leg") and a dash of James Blake style fragility from Sampha ("Too Much"), and you've got a formidable package.

Juss B - "Can't Sleep" (4:08)
Smith - "Crisp" (2:08)
Review: Belgian bastions Duploc look back over the last decade of resonance with this crucial ten track set. Launching at a time when dubstep was at its most crass commercial EDM-ified peak, the crew have forever maintained their love for the deeper, underground and innovative side of 140 music and this collection is a kindly reminder of that. Highlights are in abundance as an all-star cast of older pioneers and new young disrupters get busy with the boundary blurring; Mungk's 'Mountain' is all about that loose limbed modern jazz swing, Distance's 'Vigalance' is pure abrasive attitude, Ternion Sound get their creep on with 'Tactics' while Juss B flattens us with pure 808 science on 'Can't Sleep'. And that's not even half of it. Here's to another 10 years.
