Review: Guadeloupean artist Celia Wa's debut album Fasade is a sonic journey that transcends borders and time while carrying echoes of a rich past and the promise of a bold future. The path to Fasade has been preceded by three fine EPs and more so than ever here, Celia's determination and powerful Creole identity shine through. With raw emotion and powerful interpretation, she conveys stories in Creole, overcoming pain and anger to emerge resilient. Joined by Xavier Belin, Kristof Negri, and David Walters, they create a sound that blends Caribbean rhythms with global rhythms and urge soulful liberation and full-body movement.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve slightly damaged, slight surface marks on record***

To say that Tom Waits' eighth studio album marked a stylistic shift would be like saying winter is markedly different to summer. Having established himself as one of the finest piano-based songwriters of his generation - or any other for that matter - Swordfishtrombones was the first LP from the artist to lay out what was to come. Something very, very unusual, as visionary as it is bizarre, a celebration of the beauty of surrealism and the joy of having fun with music. Whether it's the opening number, 'Underground', and its strange, almost cartoonish chain gang jazz-blues stomp, the quiet keys and solitary vocals of 'Johnsburg, Illinois', or the distorted, compressed electronic jangling and organ riffs of 'Dave The Butcher', within the first few tracks alone you're presented with a vast and varied universe of ideas.

Review: English new wave popsters Wang Chung return with a brand new career retrospective, reenlightening us as to the very best of Nick Feldman and Jack Hues' patented blend of disco-baller new wave and dance pop. Though packed with easily recognised hits like 'Everybody Have Fun Tonight' and 'Dance Hall Days', this record also makes light of the band's lesser known favourites while arranging each in curatorial fashion, striking a balance of chronology and versatility: Wang Chung were known for their inspirational garrulity, channelling a seemingly endless array of international stylistic curiosities into their pop music: from Burundi shuffle to electronica to Motown to prog, this mix of both radio hits and deeper cuts makes for a desultory listen, where many influences are often reeled off in the space of a single track.

Review: According to the blurb we have for Doomed Utility, Alex Wang is a firm believer that if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around, it still makes a massive noise. "Sound existed before there were human ears to hear it," we're told. Not to mention the fact we have now surrounded ourselves with machines and digital tools that immerse us in tones we don't necessarily derive pleasure from. Industrial, frenetic, electronic, post-club, deconstructed and, in moments, straddling that genius-lunatic border. Doomed Utility makes no apologies for its most intense moments, and panders not to our inherent desire to understand and make sense. These are beats, basslines, distorted walls of tormented chaos and abstract moments don't lend themselves to meaning making. Welcome to the future. It's confusing.

Review: New Zealand-born dream pop legend Dean Wareham made his name in the Rough Trade-signed Galaxy 500, where his off-kilter vocals and stark/lush songs struck a chord. He then went on to form beloved indie greats Luna, in New York, and is still having success with them today. As a solo artist, Wareham has created this album with Galaxie 500 producer Kramer - the pair working together for the first time in 34 years. It's a long overdue meeting of minds because the album lands with awe-inspiring charm. Listen to its highlight, 'You Were the Ones I Had to Betray', where notes drift with a sense of weightlessness and joy, and you'll get exactly what we mean. This is music that makes life that bit better.

Review: Brit folk rock troubadours The Waterboys have put together an evocative exploration of life's complexities with this, their 16th album, all while being inspired by actor Dennis Hopper's defiant spirit. The album blends folk-rock, Americana and poetic lyrics into an introspective look at mortality, legacy and transformation. With Mike Scott's distinctive voice and emotive songwriting, the tracks balance philosophical musings with gritty realism and so embody Hopper's famously raw and rebellious energy, the sort that made him such a star of the silver screen and movies like Easy Rider. The album's atmospheric instrumentation includes sweeping strings and soaring guitars that enhance its reflective nature. Life Death & Dennis Hopper is an ambitious record but one that resonates with depth.

Review: Scottish rock veterans return with an ambitious concept album that chronicles a life marked by rebellion, excess and reinvention. Crafted with cinematic scope, the album pieces together the journey of an individual navigating shifting cultural landscapes, embracing chaos, and emerging on the other side transformed. Spanning 25 tracks, the music unfolds like a series of vignettes, moving from youthful idealism to reckless abandon and eventual redemption. There's a raw energy pulsing through the arrangements, from raucous, blues-drenched rockers to more introspective, soul-baring ballads. 'Hopper's On Top' barrels forward with driving rhythms and swaggering vocals, channeling a period of artistic ambition and Hollywood turmoil. Elsewhere, moments of reflection soften the edges, drawing the listener deeper into the story. Produced by Scott alongside James Hallawell and Brother Paul Brown, the record's sonic palette is rich, blending folk-rock roots with cinematic flourishes. Guest appearances from Bruce Springsteen and Fiona Apple add weight to the narrative, their contributions enhancing the album's dynamic range. Packaged on "burnt" vinyl 2xLP, this release is both a tribute and an exploration of resilience, art and survival. It's a bold addition to their storied career.

Review: The tale of Weird Herald - a lost band of the 60s hailing from the South Bay of California - is one of talent, misfortune and mystery. They embodiy the essence of West Coast psychedelia and folk-rock, though they never got the recognition they deserved. Their lone official releaseia 45 with 'Saratoga James' and 'Just Yesterday'iwas just the tip of the iceberg. Their unreleased album from 1968, recorded before tragedy struck with the death of guitarist Billy Dean Andrus, features haunting folk-rock, spacey acoustics and electric jams that recall Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane. With tracks like 'Untitled' and 'David of Bijou,' the band's mellow, harmonic side shines, while songs like 'Reapin' Seasons' show their harder edge. Their album was tragically shelved due to management issues, but reel-to-reel copies survived, and now, over 50 years later, they're finally available. With demos, outtakes, and bonus tracksiincluding rare 1967 basement recordingsithis release offers a fresh glimpse into the music behind the story.

Review: Come and Get It was the fourth album by Boston's Westbound Train, and it was originally released in 2009 on Hellcat Records. The album is a smart mix of traditional Jamaican music with classic notes of r&b and plenty of contemporary influences that offer a great glimpse of the band's refined, soulful sound with rich horn sections and groove-driven rhythms. From uptempo ska anthems to heartfelt ballads there is plenty of ground covered here and all with trademark energy and musicianship. The album was produced by David Hillyard of The Slackers and Obi Fernandez, and this reissue marks the first-ever vinyl pressing with two bonus dub tracks for extra pleasure.

Suffice to say, John White might not have had the same ideas about what constitutes Machine Music back in 1976 as you do today. This is also the first time we've ever managed to get a reference to Welsh rarebit into the first line of writing about a record, so everyone is learning something today. "The Machines" White refers to are the individual tracks themselves, all recorded between 1967 and 1972 and all comprising different combinations of a thing. Six pairs of "bass melody instruments" made 'Autumn Countdown Machine', different permutations of "the articulations 'ging, gang, gong, gung, ho!'" comprise 'Jews Harp Machine'. And 'Son of Gothic Chord' is crafted from the sequential chord progression of four keyboard players, spanning an octave. Conceptual experimental and wildly imaginative stuff on the borderline of electronica, abstract, mathematical and something otherworldly.

Review: For their latest red-hot reissue, the admirable Be With Records takes us back to Paris in 1979 and the sole album by Who's Who - one of the numerous aliases of songwriter, musician and producer Daniel Bangalter, AKA Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk's dad. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, right? The six tracks showcased on the eponymous set are very in keeping with French disco of the period, with attractive (and then cutting edge) synthesiser sounds being combined with glassy-eyed male and female vocals, infectious "walking" basslines and Cerrone-esque drums. Highlights are plentiful, from the peak-time disco joy of the tropical-tinged "Palace Palace", the Moroder/Patrick Cowley-influenced mid-tempo spaciness of 'Hypno Dance', to the Tata Vega style jauntiness of 'Roll kacky Roll' and the fantastic 'Dancin' Machine'.

Review: Often touted as a "masterpiece of jazz-funk live albums," The Wooden Glass's 1972 live recording proves it's more than just hype. Featuring vibraphonist Billy Wooten who previously played with Grant Green, this record was recorded at Indianapolis' The 19th Hole club and captures the essence of fusion driven by soulful 60s influences. Wooten's gentle melodies contrast with the gritty, distorted sound of Harold Cardwell's powerful drumming and Emmanuel Riggins' Hammond organ while the energetic performance from the band, including guitarist William Roach, creates a tapestry of intensity and dreamlike vibes. It's raw, electrifying, high-energy jazz.
