Temple Duel (limited 10")

Temple Duel (5:06)
Temple Dub (5:02)
Review: Blimey, if this isn't major meeting of musical Midas minds then we don't know what is. Alter Echo, E3 and Headland all collaborating with legendary dub flautist Diggory Kenrick. "Temple Duel" sets the scene in deep underground chambers, untouched by the sun. Reverb space is our only guide and ritual combat is the only way out as we make our way through subsonic 808 bass foundations, a near-industrial mid-range bass guitar groove, stiff snares, stick-fighting percussion and Diggory's torchlight melody. A truly fluid hypnotic narrative that arcs through the dark, if you're looking for an even foggier route flip for "Temple Dub" where the torch is extinguished and you have nothing but your sonic wits to take you home. Only Diggory knows if you make alive or not...

Bluetrain - "Binary Riddim" (13:30)
Hydergine - "Mystic Light" (6:11)
Hydergine - "Lunar Eclipse" (7:32)
Review: Lempuyang's third offering is an outstanding split release between Steve O'Sullivan & Hydergine, label bosses for Mosaic/Bluetrain & Ranges. In 'Binary Riddim' Steve delivers a two-part dub track spanning >13 minutes, seriously heavy in the low end; melancholy strings in the first half, progressing to outright menacing chord stabs in the latter. A versatile track offering something for both warm-up and the dancefloor. Complimenting on the flip are 'Mystic Light' and 'Lunar Eclipse' from Hydergine. Deep, dubby atmospherics meander over a weighty 909 kick on B1. Subtle minimalism a la Terrence Dixon, pitched down on B2. Essential release!

Rasta Forever (DB ART version) (4:23)
Rasta Forever (Rhauder mix) (6:21)
Rasta Forever (Zion Train remix) (6:09)
Review: Mole Audio present a very special new quart of tracks from Daktari (Oliver Linge & Olaf Pozsgay), who've teamed up for a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration with vocalist and dub legend Horace Andy for an original set of versions. Actually, it's a welcome comeback for both artists; Daktari also haven't released anything since the brilliant back-to-back waxes for Luxus in 1997, then 1999. Now that the Y2K scare has abated (25 years later, no doubt) Daktari are back with 'Rasta Forever', which moves minimally and spatiously, and manages to sound much "slower" than its dancehall tempo would initially betray. Andy's star line has to be, "we don't smoke spliff, we smoke chalice," alluding to the kind of cannabis smoking pipe often used by Rastafari. Alt mixes from DB ART, Rhauder, and Zion Train transition from greezier dancehall, to something more dub technical, to a bubblers' delight in a more classic sound; all do stellar reparative justice to Andy's towering, implicit demand for dues and honour paid, and, true to the Daktari name, prove amply effective at remedying our symptoms.

George Dekker - "Sinner Man" (2:44)
Horus All Stars - "Reap What You Sow" (dub) (2:45)
Review: The Horus label's All Stars production outfit serves up some super fresh roots tunes here with plenty of early 70s influences. The a-side original 'Sinner Man' features vocals from former Pioneers singer George Dekker. His carefree style brings a real innocence as he muses on "using the bible as a tool to catch the fool." The rhythms are pure bait with natty guitar riffs just hanging in the air and noodling keys worked in deep. Flip it over for a dub version that is heavy on the knob twiddles and studio effects.

Cuss Cuss (TMSV remix)
Review:  Recently revisited by RSD on the Broken Beats album, Horace highlight "Cuss Cuss" gets two superb reworks from DJ Madd and TMSV. The former goes for a starker, more traditional dub vibe, allowing the original riff to play a lead role in the arrangement while the rich steppy beats drive the groove forward. TMSV flips for more of a traditional dubstep flavour with a more prominent halfstep and uglier bassline. Both versions are incredible. No cussing please...

Hysteric - "Pinball" (4:09)
Review: Having already introduced us to many of their regular 'pals' - re-editors specialising in Balearic and cosmic oddities - Manchester's Drum Chums crew now wants is to meet their 'percussion pals'. They operate within similar sonic territory if this first multi-artist missive is believed, albeit with more of a penchant for dubbed-out drums. There's plenty to set the oulse racing throughout, from the metronomic dub-chug of Spice Route's incredible 'Gruler Dub' - a fine re-edit debut from the long-serving Bristol selector - and the expertly dubbed-out space disco trip that is DJ Pouffsouffle's 'Totally Manic'. Elsewhere, Manc stalwart Neil Diablo delivers the ultra-slow weird-wave pop of 'Starry Night', while Hysteric's 'Pinball' is a blue-eyed soul treat.

Review: The Hornin Sounds label invites you to sink deep into a reggae vibe on this superlative 7" from Vin Gordon. Though freshly mastered, the sis actually built on an old instrumental that was dug out of some archives. It was originally played by Fazal Prendergast alongside The High Times Players at the legendary Channel One studio in 1982. Scientist mixed it at King Tubby studio meaning its credentials are unquestionable. Here it is finished with some deadly and devastating trombone from 'Don D Junior.'

King Clyde - "Request Line" (5:08)
Dream Lovers - "For Belgian Friends" (6:24)
The Records We Never Made - "On A Whispered Way" (5:26)
Review: On this multi-artist bonanza, Aficionado owners Jason Boardman and Moonboots have decided to showcase contemporary talents from Manchester, in association with clothing brand Good Measure. Half Sink steps up first, gently unfurling the reverb-heavy guitar solos, booming bass and shuffling samba rhythms of "Tsukimi". King Clyde's loose, groovy and fuzzy "Request Line" is a bouncy disco-funk treat, while Dream Lovers' "For Belgian Friends" is an evocative chunk of meandering bliss. Arguably best of all, though, is "On A Whispered Way" by The Records We Never Made, a glistening, delay-heavy foray into cinematic, post-rock pastures. Clearly, Manchester's got (Balearic) talent.

Review: The third release on the Misadventures label has as solid as the first two. This time out it is Manchester producer Haners who is back at the buttons with the sort of impossibly dreamy and tropical Balearic sounds that brighten up even a drizzly northern afternoon. The supple and sublime 'Denial' kick off with gently titling grooves and wet claps, acoustic guitar riffs and breathy vocals tones. 'Shooter' is a reggae and dub tinged rhythm that lolls up and down like a swaying tide. 'Memories' is for when the sun sets and the party gets more dance floor oriented with nice cosmic disco overtones.

Review: Two dubwise covers, re-issued since Ximeno's first press in 2012. Originally released in 1983, Derrick Harriott's cover of The Dazz Band's "Let It Whip" fuses the best of dub (he was one of the first artists to make sweet music with King Tubby at the mixing controls) and boogie, creating a unique hybrid that works almost too well. Meanwhile on the flip, Susan Cadogan covers the Mtume classic "Juicy Fruit" (also released in 1983), switching the original's R&B flavour for something more sunkissed and sultry. Both will work wonders when the summer comes.

Drifted Entities Vol 1 is his latest offering and is an experimental take on dub, cosmic funk, jazz and drum & bass with the HFP signature unifying it all. Review: Weird balearic acid electro and downtempo from the group known as Hektisch Sprengen DJs (known as the heads of the label Terra Magica). Their efforts until now have been to release oddball music from their contemporaries, but never before have we heard anything from the heads themselves. Drawing on Latin music styles such Cumbia, there are all manner of phoned-in vocal samples thrown in, such as Dr. Alban's refrain from the 1990s hit 'No Hash Hash, No Cocaine'. Main Roots - "Plea My Cause" (3:22)
Review: On their latest deep dive into the vast vaults of Jamaica's Studio One Records, Rock A Shacka has unearthed two largely overlooked gems. On the A-side you'll find 'Chinese Beauty' by vibraphonist Lennie Hibbert, which first featured on his 1971 album More Creation. It's a wonderfully relaxed affair in which hazy organ stabs and Hibbert's fluid vibraphone solos solos rise above a languid, early evening riddim. Over on side B you'll find a genuine rarity: the sole single from Coxsone Dodd-produced outfit Main Roots. 'Plea My Case' is a fine harmony vocal number in which the singers plead their case to the Man Upstairs over a slow, chunky, head-nodding roots reggae groove.

Hidden Sequence inaugurate it with a limited edition 7" that sets a great standard from the off. 'Studio A' is a liquid dub with delicate hi-hats sprinkled over loose, tumbling drums and rich sub-bass. It's vast in sauce and impossible not to sink into. Review: Manchester's Hidden Spheres becomes the latest artist to showcase his cosmic, percussion-heavy reworks and re-edits on Talking Drums' offshoot Drum Chums. As you'd expect, the sometime Lobster Theremin, Moods & Grooves and Rhythm Section International producer is in fine form from the off, delivering ear-catching, mildly Balearic reworks of genuine obscurities. The highlight for us is 'Stolen', a version of an early South African kwaito number that's big on proto-house bass, densely layered percussion, lo-fi synth melodies and fine lead vocals. Over on the reverse, 'You Better Dance' is a deliciously dreamy, reggae-influenced, mid-tempo Afro-Balearic treat, while 'Together' sounds like a re-wire of an eccentric bit of mid-to-late '80s bubblegum brilliance.

The Arthur 'Duke' Reid-founded label's latest must-have missive is a strong double-header. The Miami-based Jamaican made some seminal, stunning music that presaged the increasing importance of synthesisers in disco and dance music overall. This time the label have decided to give a regal airing to a cut previously only available squeezed onto the Deep Reggae Roots LP. "Safari" is a heady brew that keeps a necessary skank in the groove while channeling the nagging funk of The Meters and heading somewhere exotic. Review: This tasty 7" first saw the light of day back in 2013, and has been an in-demand, hard-to-find item ever since. The demand can be partly be attributed to Mike The Glove's A-side version of MJ classic "Rock With You", which expertly combines the King of Pop's original vocal with an irie, decidedly dusty reggae backing track. By the standards of these kinds of mash-ups, it's immaculately produced and almost sounds like an original production. Tucked away on the flip you'll find obscure El Salvadorian funk band Hielo Ardiente's brilliant 1974 cover of Cymade's "The Message". Boasting some killer organ solos and vocals delivered in Spanish, rather than English, it offers a brilliant spin on a stone cold classic.

Review: The Pioneers return here on this Amalgamated Jamaica reissue alongside Hugh Malcolm and between them they are renowned for their popularity and numerous hits produced by Joe Gibbs and Leslie Kong. With approximately 40 recordings under Gibbs alone, this track embodies the classic elements synonymous with their collaborations and comes complete with a distinctive penny whistle. Bursting with energetic vibes and trademark topical lyrics characteristic of the Pioneers, this song resonates with the musical essence that defines their legacy.

Fazal Sounds (4:30)
Review: The much loved High Music Showcase long player has been taken apart here with two of the most crucial tunes from it now served up onto their own 7" for the first time. These tunes are always in demand and have been cut at 45rpm "heavy and loud and shaped for sound systems," which means that will always be the best way to play them. 'Agent 27' is full of rolling drums and fills with neat acoustic guitars and jangling chords, then 'Fazal Sounds' is deeper and more spiritual.

Mercedes Benz (version) (3:36)
Review: Prince Fatty's 'Mercedes Benz' with Shniece and Horseman is a rub-a-dub version of a 1970s hit from Janis Joplin that now gets a very special pressing courtesy of Lovedub Limited. The A-side kicks off with the spine-tingling and epic original vocal before disappearing into a world of reverb. At that point the dubby low end arrives and brings a different vibe to the stunning vocals but one that really makes a mark next to new bars from Horseman, police sirens and funky riffs. It's a tough sound system groove that is backed with a fine version and has been a firm fixture of Prince Fatty's record box for a while now.

And The Beat Goes On (dub)
Review: Fatty's dub reversions never fail to impressive - his cover of Ol' Dirty Bastard requires repeat reloads every time - but this hook-up with fellow Mr Bongo artist Hollie Cook takes things never level. Taking the classic 1980 one-hit-wonder from The Whispers and giving it a royal dub swing, Fatty and Cook have created a superb cover that takes the original disco funk number into a whole new pasture. Unmissable.

Review: After a recent Pressure Sounds compilation put together the best of Caltone Records - documenting the truest gems of a great Jamaican dub label - the horse's mouth is now heard neighing. Caltone themselves have now reissued Devon Russell & The Tartans' 'Making Love', a long-lost from the late 1960s troubadours. Ne'er released before, it also comes backed exclusively with a bluesy Heptones, Tommy McCook & The Supersonics lamentation, 'Crying Over You'.

Review: Culture Dub continue to celebrate 20 years of big tunes with this latest 12". The A side houses UK dub outfit Vibronics who serves up a cut imbued with the spirit of proper sound systems in 2 parts. Part 1 is all shiny chords and swaggering bottom end, while the second is darker and drenched in more reverb before reggae and dub sound system crew O.B.F add a "Deep & Spiritual" touch to their remix. High Tone oversees the B side and brings his French dub touch via "Dub Culture" before handing over the reins to Zion Train who brings plenty of weight to his remix.

Review: You can probably work out what's going on here from the title: a superb collection of reworked Hall & Oates classics inna reggae style. They are the fine work of Black Market Dub who likes to reimagine classic sounds through a 70s Jamaican lens. The techniques used throughout are superbly authentic with hissing hi-hats, lazy tumbling beats and snaking baselines. The vocals remain in their original, often polished, falsetto style and extra horns are added for a lush sunny impact. Great fun, but also great quality.

Review: Beres Hammond's venture into soul and r&b, backed by a lineup of reggae legends, offers a surprising break from his usual style. The album blends disco-inspired elements with Hammond's rich vocals, yet tracks like 'Keep My Wheel Turning' and 'I'm Lonely' stand out with a raw edge, adding grit to the smooth soul vibes. The title track showcases Hammond's emotional depth in a yearning romantic ballad, yet it's the overall feeling of experimentation that gives the release its unique charm. While this detour into soul isn't a permanent shift, it finds Hammond working at the peak of his expressive powers, offering an unexpected but satisfying listen.

Review: Formed in the early 60s and initally recorded at the now world-famous Studio One studios in Jamaica, Heptones are most famous for bridging the genres ska and rocksteady.. In 1971 they left to work with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and found international success with re-recording and or updating many of their tracks again. Cool Rasta was their first new recording for the legendary Trojan Records in 1976, an album that has all the hallmarks of early ska - see 'Do Good To Everyone'. Elsewhere, 'Dreadlock' is a great example of their rootsier side, and the the album is not short on political, conscious messages either with tracks like 'Black On Black' and 'Suffering So'. Cool Rasta is an album that always hits the mark - and this version comes with limited hand-numbered copies on 180-gram orange vinyl.

Review: You can't overestimate the importance of The Heptones in the evolution of Jamaican music, after they defined the transition from ska to rocksteady and on to reggae. This album, "Back On Top", captures the band in the early '80s, when they had reached an international audience after working with Lee 'Scratch' Perry and releasing on Island Records. By this point they were back producing themselves, creating a perfect spanning sweet ballads and upbeat skankers, not to mention a cover of The Beatles' "Yesterday". Lovingly repressed on 180 gram red vinyl, this is a welcome reissue of an album that's been tricky to get hold of for some time, from one of the all time great reggae acts.

One way to remind ourselves of that is to check in with any of their magnificent back catalogue albums. In A Dancehall style is one of them from way back in 1983 and as the title suggests it finds them exploring a sub-genre of reggae in their own inimitable style. It is a classic of the genre with both sides of vinyl packed with irresistibly good tunes.

Review: Habibi Funk does a great job of introducing or reacquainting the world with niche but rich musical scenes from all across the Arab world. This latest album takes us to the reggae sounds of Libya and specifically the work of Ibrahim Hesnawi, who is known amongst those who know as "The Father of Libyan Reggae." He draws on roots, dub and dancehall with a distinctive Arabic twist that plots a line from Tripoli to Kingston. This artist is so revered for the way he fused the those two musical worlds so effortlessly while colouring it with elements of jazz, soul and disco. An enchanting album that was first recorded more than 40 years ago.

It's an album that fuses digital reggae sounds with rub-a-dub rhythms and while sounding utterly fresh it also comes riddled with a sense of 80s authenticity. The vocal refrains are catchy and pithy, the verses deliver forceful lyrics and flourishes of rocksteady with notorious singer Payoh SoulRebel. Tenor Mario also debuts in an unusual role as lead vocalist and serves up a message of love between men and women. John Vanilla is the man behind the artwork, making this an even more vital offering.

Review: A sticker on the front of this third full-length from Tru Thoughts stalwart Jonathan James (aka Hint) claims that it could "improve daily happiness by 119%". While that may be a touch optimistic, Daily Intake is certainly James most exuberant and lively set to date. While previous excursions have seen him paddling in the muddy waters between broken beat, future jazz and downtempo, Daily Intake is a boisterous exploration of the world of bass music. With a string of guest vocalists and collaborators lending a hand (Zed Bias, Natalie Storm, Tenor Fly), James gleefully charges between dancehall, UKG, hip-hop, dubstep and, most surprisingly, 80s synth-funk flavas (the brilliant "Give It Up").
