Review: AKSK is the collaborative project consisting of Adda Kaleh and Diego Herrera aka Suzanne Kraft. They present their debut LP on Running Back entitled 'Things We Do' which was recorded over the last several years between Kaleh's hometown of Bucharest, as well Los Angeles and Amsterdam - where Herrera divides his residence. His neon-lit and mysterious mood music that's typically awash in FM synthesis creates the perfect backdrop for Kaleh's captivating vocals on tracks like "Breaking", the sensual slow burner "Work" or the low slung and balmy balearica of "Special Times & Places". Coober Pedy University Band (Tornado Wallace and William Paxton) also provide remixes of the tracks "Four Lonely Words" and "Strong Like Nature".

Review: Running Back celebrates the history of Frankfurt's legendary Wild Pitch Club with this first of two parts of its eye-opening compilation. Both of the two 2 x 12" collections invites Playhouse man and club co-founder Ava alongside Panorama Bar's very own nd_baumecker to do the curation. The venue was a place to hear the very freshest US house sounds in the face of what was a fast emerging techno take over. That is represented here with an authentic snapshot of the club's vibe across a superb series of cuts. A real bit of European house history this, for sure.

Review: Wild Pitch Club is next up in the excellent and ling running Running Back Mastermix series. It's a legendary space that has very much defined the Frankfurt and wider german scene and was also something of a predecessor venue to the new well-loved Robert Johnson. That club was itself a place where Panorama Bar's very own nd_baumecker really made waves and it is they alongside co-founder Ata who have curated these tunes. The venue was hooked on the US sounds and often hosted the likes of Robert Hood and Claude Young to Kerri Chandler all of which shows in the sounds of the tunes.

Review: Written, produced and recorded in Sheffield and Ibiza between 2016 and 2018, Nature Sounds Of The Balearics is Mark Barrott's third full length album following up two volumes in his Sketches From An Island series.. The International Fell boss described the musical outcome as a techno album of sorts, with influences harking back to the days of Warp's Artificial Intelligence compilations or SSR's Freezone series (as heard on the zeitgeist of '90s IDM like "TRIX/Ichimoku"), chill out ("Donchian Reprise") and Detroit's mellower moments like on the evocative "Point & Figure".

Paper Tears (Tribal Tears dub)
Review: The phrase "Gerd Janson does it again" seems to be uttered all too often here at Juno HQ, with his Running Back imprint somehow maintaining a standard of quality that's matched by the lack of fuss Janson makes about it. The latest 12" reeks of Running Back brilliance with finely judged artwork complemented by superb music - courtesy of mysterious producer BDI who was last seen dropping the brilliant "City & Industry" on Rush Hour. Described with typical verve as "Vatican house", this three track release has the erstwhile BDI operating under the Compassion Crew name drawing out three variants on "Paper Tears" with the jangly insouciance of the Tribal Tears Dub perhaps the pick of the lot.

Review: There was much gnashing of teeth from committed vinyl enthusiasts when Maurice Fulton decided to release his latest Boof full-length - the follow-up to 2011's inspired Sshh, Dandelions at Play - solely as a digital download. Having rescued that album from obscurity via a physical release, Gerd Janson has decided to do the same with The Hydrangeas Whisper, here delivering a vinyl version. Given the album's undoubted quality, it's something of a result for wax-maniacs everywhere. While Fulton takes a few odd turns - see the dubbed-out, trippy title track and after-party techno throb of "Backlash" - for the most part it's as expected, with the Chicagoan-in-London delivering a typically jazzy, disco-flecked range of sweet, life-affirming dancefloor cuts.

Review: Having dropped digitally a few weeks back via his own Bubbletease Communications label, Maurice Fulton's latest album as Boof has finally landed on wax courtesy of Gerd Janson and Running Back. It's worth picking up, not least because Fulton's musical vision is so vibrant and distinctive. Over two slabs of wax, the Sheffield-based American delivers a swathe of ear-pleasing, off-kilter deep house numbers laden with colourful synthesizer sounds, jazzy electric piano stabs, opaque chords and rubbery bass guitar. There are of course plenty of interesting and oddball diversions to be found throughout (see "Ana's F Is Chillin", the intoxicating and exotic "Japanese Indian Shrimp Curry", and the totle track's kaleidoscopic space jazz), as well as a handful of ultra-percussive peak-time beasts (see "Luam Has Found Her Z").

Review: Roman Flugel is back with his seventh full length titled Eating Darkness. The nine tracks were created during the coronavirus lockdown of 2020, and are testament to the Frankfurt legend's penchant for mixing elements of pop with sounds of the underground - a scene he has been affiliated with since the early '90s. A variety of moods and grooves are all delivered in his idiosyncratic style: from the woozy and broken slow burner 'Chemicals', to the majestic and spellbinding dancefloor drama of 'Wow' or the raw hardware acid jack of 'Jocks And Freaks' which harks to his days as Alter Ego. Elsewhere, there's the heartfelt and bittersweet ambient house of 'Cluttered Homes' and the downbeat bliss of closing epic 'Charles'.

Review: Sometime Klaus Schulze collaborator Andreas Grosser spent much of the late '70s and early '80s making experimental syntheszier music inspired by the (then) West German kosmiche scene, handing out cassettes of his recordings to anyone who was interested. The best of these unreleased works were first gathered together on 1981's Venite Vessum, a cassette-only release that now exchanges hands for large sums online. Happily, Running Back has decided to make it available on vinyl for the first time, stretching the spacey and otherworldly ambience of Grosser's deep space compositions - some of which bubble along gracefully for 15 minutes at a time - over two slabs of wax. Thrillingly, this edition also includes a previously unheard track, the Philip Glass style synthesizer cycles and sun-bright positivity of "The Quantum Jump".

Review: Second time around for one of German house music's most significant releases. Recorded in 1995 and released as the first record on the now legendary Playhouse imprint 'Surprise' is a killer chunk of First Choice-sampling mid-90s, NYC style garage-house/deep house fusion produced by Alter Ego under the alternative Holy Garage alias. This expanded reissue on Running Back bundles the pair's original version with a quartet of reworks, most of which first surfaced in 1996. There's a pleasingly low-slung, off-kilter deep house rework from a then-young Isolee, the snappy, vibraphone solo-sporting 'Fake Jazz Mix', the bleeping, trance-inducing, acid-laden peak-time hedonism of the 'Holy Bassline Mix', and a deep, dusty and pleasingly percussive revision from future Playhouse hero LoSoul.

Review: A couple of years back, Running Back boss Gerd Janson wrote an in-depth article for Red Bull Music Academy about Tony Humphries' legendary "Mastermixes" - all-action mixes originally created for NYC radio stations in the '80s and '90s. With this in mind, it's perhaps unsurprising that he commissioned the legendary DJ to give the Running Back catalogue the same treatment. Predictably, Humphries has come up with the goods, delivering a loved-up, melodious and classic sounding trip through mostly synth-heavy, classic-sounding label highlights. That it sounds like the kind of set you'd actually hear from Humphries is testament not only to the quality of his track selection and mixing, but also the suitability of the Running Back catalogue.

Review: Strahil "Kink" Velchev may well be the hardest-working man in dance music. Each new-year brings a succession of fine singles, with little in the way of fluff or filler. Even so, the vast Playground is only his second album to date (his first, "Under Destruction", appeared in 2014). It is arguably his strongest collection of tracks to date, though. Over the course of the 12 tracks, he brilliantly demonstrates the depth and variety of his influences, variously turning his hand to cinematic downtempo beats ("Samodiva", "The Universe in Her Eyes"), warehouse-friendly peak-time anthems (stab-heavy smasher "Russian"), DJ Sneak/Dj Duke-style big room house ("Perth", 'Organ"), mind-altering experimental dub ("Peter Piet Pete"), Industrial ("Tate of Metal") and, of course, angular analogue techno ("Five", "Teo Techno").

Review: As one half of acclaimed German duo Arto Mwambe, and half of the Chicago-inspired Tuff City Kids alongside Gerd Janson, Philip Lauer arrives with his debut solo album for Janson's Running Back. Displaying a wide range of influences, it nevertheless offers a typically melodic German take on early Chicago house, electro and disco. Opening with the 80s TV theme styles of "70000 AC" the album moves through the deep electro flex of "Sheldor", the guitar led pop soundscape of "Frontex Slowfox", the slo-mo grooves of "Sandalscene", before finishing with the deep Chi town grooves of "Trainman". Essential stuff.

Review: Whether operating solo or alongside Gerd Janson as Tuff City Kids, Phillip Lauer's productions have always tended towards the loved-up, glassy-eyed and retro-futurist. "Power" - his first solo album for three years - ripples with giddy references to vintage dance styles of the '80s and '90s, from the synth-heavy Italo-disco revivalism of "Phaser7" and "Mirrors", to the rush-inducing electro positivity of "Direction" and the almost overwhelmingly sun-kissed pulse of Balearic-minded ambient opener "Blissos". While his inspirations are overwhelmingly old-fashioned in nature, the resultant tracks are rarely less than brilliant, with the instrumental synth-pop rush of "Realistic" and muscular, Bobby Orlando-esque sing-along "Power" amongst the many sparkling highlights.

Review: Back in 1996, Losoul's first outing on the now legendary Playhouse label caused such a stir across Europe and the U.S that it ended up being licensed and reissued - with additional reworks - by labels in Detroit and the Netherlands. This double-pack from Running Back brings together Losoul's original mix - a loopy, is-it-house-or-is-it-techno loop jam that cannily builds in intensity over the course of 11 and a half minutes - and two of the smartest revisions: Theo Parrish's mesmerising, deep and hypnotic revision (one of his best, we'd argue) and Dutch producer Gerd's jazzy, warm and sub-heavy shuffler. Also included is original B-side '00000000', a fine slab of minimal house hypnotism, and the previously unreleased 'D1', a more laidback and stripped-back disco-house loop jam.

Review: Gerd Jansen's faultless Running Back is back with another of its hard-to-define but essential albums, Keep Looking Where The Light Comes From, this time from Panoram. It is a record that blurs the line between chaos and beauty, with fuzzy synths and improvised rhythms offering up some intriguing sound designs and unusual textures. There is a psychedelic feel to many of those, but so too a dream-like quality where barely-there melodies and half-remembered vocals drift in and out of earshot. Both maximal and minimal compositions feature with nods to ASMR pleasures and a mix of synthetic and acoustic sounds.

Review: Gerd Janson's Runing Back encourages us all to take a moment to relax, sink in deep and get lost in some reverential thoughts with this new album from Panoram. The artist's first album came on Edinburgh's Firecracker Recordings and this one is just as sublime. It is surreal ambient with vocal whispers, strings that signify new dawns and wide open blue skies that cast you adrift on the Med. The colours are muted hues of orange and yellow, the occasional rhythms are lo-fi and rickety, beautiful, slow-moving melodies washer you repeatedly and the whole thing has its own uniquely out of this world atmosphere.

Review: The immaculately coiffured Gerd Janson has overseen a magnificent 2011 for Running Back - ensuring the label's status amongst the nu disco fraternity is maintained with efforts from Tiger & Woods and Toddney Terje, whilst digging up industrial curios from the 80s and slipping out curveball releases from the likes of Hammon Decks, Suzanne Kraft and Disco Nihilist. Running Back make a further compelling stake for variety with On Da Floor, a label debut from Redshape, Delsin's resident mysterious crimson avenger. The title track is vintage Redshape, creeping across the length of the A Side, driven menacingly by those signature synth waves, whilst the more tightly attuned "Goom" is low reaching, deviant body music at its finest.

Review: New to Running Back is the latest record from Raphael Schon, best known for his enduring hit 'Fiesta 2000'; here the Augsburger develops that track's sound with a similarly irreverent set of lub-dubs, six to be exact. Never once skipping a beat (don't panic, palpitators), the likes of 'Baerhit', 'Breathe' and 'Do You Like That' scour the recollective depths of a childhood spent ingesting Italo, house and electro-disco, albeit bringing a modern flair to the mix via warming pad cloaks and janky, intermittent lead synthetic daggers, all to back up the crucial 4x4. Despite its mood of joy, 'Heart Times' was conceived during a very emotionally turbulent time for Schon, owing to its later vocal beltings and emotional groundswells. Danke, Schon.

Review: Hamburg's Front club was a fixture of Germany's underground club scene throughout the '80s and early '90s, with resident DJs Klaus Stockhausen and later Boris Dlugosch championing house music (amongst other things) long before it was fashionable to do so. It certainly made an impression on Gerd Janson, who asked Stockhausen and Dlugosch to put together a celebratory retrospective of Front favourites. This second part (of two) contains some real gems, from Dlugosch's edit of Toyin Agbetu's Dream 2 Science influenced deep shuffler "After The Storm" and the Bobby 'O' style '84 sleaze of Mark Imperial's "J'Adore Danser", to the mid-'80s NYC house flavours of CT Satin's "I Found A Friend (Underworld version)" and the Italian dream house colours of inspired early Fila Brazillia single "Mermaids".

Review: Amazingly, it's been some three years since the last single from former Crosstown Rebels and Music For Freaks mainstay Matthew Styles. As you'd perhaps expect given its release by Running Back, this comeback EP is pretty good, with the hirsute producer offering up a variety of flavours across the five tracks. The title track, for example, is little more than a freaky, beatless DJ tool, while "Polee" channels the spirit of space disco and Chicago jack. "Scale" is unfashionably deep and careful, whilst "Galaxy 21" is a heavy percussion work-out with a twist. All are overshadowed by impressive lead cut "Don't Call Me Again", which sounds like a swinging house take on the classic Carl Craig sound.

Review: Zanzibar born, Sheffield-based vocalist Mim Suleiman presents her fifth album on the ever reliable Running Back imprint - and is produced by legend Maurice Fulton. Ultra-modern African music merges with pop, house and disco, while lyrics sung in Swahili deal with a variety of sentimental themes. Suleiman has been described as "Mama Africa of the modern era" and is in fine form on "Si Bure": from the spiritual life music of "Aruka" and "Na Mia", to the uplifting soulful house vibe of "Usiogope" or "Kuemenora" - which are geared for some evocative moments on the dancefloor. We're also loving the powerful techno beats of "Haki" which provide an intense backing for Suliman's powerful vocal delivery as well as lo-slung boogie "Wewe" and the Animal Collective vibes of "Patosha", where Suleiman's celestial voice calls out over a wide open plain.

Review: There was much excitement when Pink Eye, Maurice Fulton's first album under the Syclops album for five years, first appeared online last month. In typical fashion, Fulton hadn't let anyone know it was coming. As with some of his other projects, it's now available on physical formats via German titans Running Back. As with previous Syclops albums, it's wonderfully bonkers and hard to pigeonhole, with the Sheffield-based Chicagoan combining mind-altering electronics, skewed drums, riotous analogue grooves and cheery piano and synthesizer motifs in a variety of hugely impressive ways. There are naturally some suitably filthy club workouts present - check the intergalactic madness of "Sarah's E Is Back", the druggy, afro-tech romp that is "Spin Cycle" and the sub-heavy insanity of "Kelly Is On Her C" - alongside loved-up compositions and productions that indulge Fulton's less discussed often overlooked jazz influences.

A Blink Of An Eye
Review: Shout outs to Gerd Janson and Running Back for doing the decent thing and issuing the surprise Syclops LP from the master Maurice Fulton on double vinyl. Having seemingly abandoned his Syclops pseudonym following the critical and commercial success of the superb 2008 full-length, I've Got My Eye On You, Fulton elected to resurrect it for a surprise sophomore album. Predictably, A Blink of An Eye is a bit good. Picking up where the previous album left off, it delivers a warped fusion of titanium-plated electronics, leftfield acid jack, freestyle jazz flourishes and intergalactic mutant disco. Formidably twisted but hugely enjoyable, it gleefully charges off in many different directions, mixing shirts-off anthems (see the brilliant "Sarah's E with Extra P"), with curious percussion jams (the afro-centric "Jump Bugs") and curiously blissful, Boof-ish excursions ("5 In"). Stellar stuff.

Review: Press reviews of Henning Severud's long-awaited debut album have been universally positive, and it's easy to see why. While the Norwegian touches on numerous styles across Vibe Telemetry - new age, ambient house, Scandolearic, Italo-disco, vintage Italian deep house and even saucer-eyed techno - each have been filtered through his hazy, hard-to-define desire to create music with its own distinctive sense of atmosphere. As a result, it's a hugely vibrant, colourful and inventive set, with Severud effortlessly creating a set of tracks that works as a coherent, easy to listen to whole, despite the presence of numerous future floor-fillers. As debut albums go, it's something of a cracker.

Review: While he'd been building a reputation for a few years already, it was 2009's In The End (I Want You To Cry) EP for Running Back that first thrust Marco 'Tensnake' Niemerski towards the spotlight. Some six years on, Gerd Janson has decided to put together an expansive new package of remixes. There's plenty to enjoy, from Pete Herbert and Dicky Trisco's breezy, guitar-laden boogie rework of "Holdin' Back (My Love") and Prins Thomas's dense-but-wonky, Scandolearic disco revision of the same cut, to the bright-and-breezy, rush-inducing melodiousness of Lone's sublime rework of "In The End (I Want You To Cry)". Tiger & Woods' remix of "Holding Back (My Love)" - all relentless build followed by thrilling boogie-meets-house release - is also pretty darn special.

Review: ** Running Back Repress for the Terje Fans **Terje Olsen doesn't release many records, but when he does they tend to be pretty special. This surprise EP for Running Back is his only his fifth original single in seven years, but it's arguably his best yet. "Ragysh" is devilishly simple, a naggingly hypnotic house/ electronic disco head-nodder that builds to a gasping climax of chic, intergalactic melodies. It's partnered by "Bonysh", a dubwise beats track that ekes maximum thrills from little more than ever-changing percussion. B-side "Snooze For Love" - available in dancefloor and downtempo versions - continues the stargazing theme, offering up an uber-Balearic mix of bleep melodies, dozy chords and sleepwalking percussion.

Review: On their third album, Tiger & Woods have decided to flip the script a little, paying tribute to Italy's remote, rural clubs of the early 1980s. To do this, they've sampled up a wealth of material from Rome's boogie-inspired, Italo-disco era Full Time and Goodymusic labels and turned it into slow motion and mid-tempo gold. As a result, the album's eight tracks are altogether more sun-kissed and Balearic in feel than their electrofunk-inspired club jams of old, though this is no bad thing. In fact, there's an argument to suggest that "AOD" (it stands for Adult Oriented Dance apparently) is their most enjoyable and listenable album to date, with less reliance on heavyweight loop jams and more intricate musical touches. However you spin it, "AOD" is a glassy-eyed, loved up triumph.

Review: Since shifting his focus more towards atmospheric, Balearic-minded sounds a few years back, Tornado Wallace has delivered some of the most deliciously humid and glassy-eyed music around. Hopes are naturally high, then, for this long-anticipated debut album. It picks up from where his sublime ESP Institute, Beats In Space and Second Circle releases left off, delivering a warm, evocative, sun kissed blend of shuffling Balearic grooves, horizontal soundscapes, gentle tropical workouts, and rich, synth-laden explorations. There's a pleasing haziness throughout, with live percussion and instrumentation rubbing shoulders with glistening synthesizers, ear-pleasing electronics and pulsing drum machine hits. In other words, it's a fine debut album.

Review: Having contributed a stellar track to Gerd Janson's Musik For Autobahns 2 compilation, it's little surprise to see Leon Vynehall pop up on Running Back. Rojus (Designed To Dance) is an expansive affair, with eight tracks stretched across two slabs of wax. It's also predictably varied; contrast, for example, the drowsy ambient chords and twinkling electronics of opener "Beyond This", and the deep-jack-goes-rave sweatiness of "Beau Sovereign". Vynehall also finds space for the Balearic jazz-house swing of "Paradisea", the wall-of-sound Detroit deep house of "Blush", and the African influenced drum workout "...There Is You". In other words, it's a versatile cracker.
