Review: Alpha Games is the sixth studio album from perennial millennial indie heroes Bloc Party. It's been six years since their last record, Hymns, so what has happened to Kele Okereke's band in that time? Notably, the line-up now features Justin Harris and Louise Bartle and this is the first record they had a direct influence on the songwriting. Listening to lead single 'Traps', there's a fierce urgency which positively leaps out of the speakers. The rhythm section rushes, and Okereke cavorts across the top with a theatrical performance which shows off his range perfectly. There's no doubt they'll be lighting up indie dancefloors and festivals alike as they ride the energy of this album into the great wide world this summer.

Review: There's no band more timeless than Blondie, nor any band more likely to nonsense the idea that pop music is the preserve of the young - Debbie Harry is 71 years old, yet 'Pollinator' is as fleet of foot as anything the band have made, not to mention their finest album since their late-'90s comeback with 'No Exit'. Recruiting the production skills of John Congleton, not to mention a galaxy of stars in the writing department (Charlie XCX, Sia, Johnny Marr, Dev Hynes, Nick Valensi) may have helped them on their way, but 'Pollinator' would be nothing without our Deb's imperious charisma, nor a pop suss that has lost none of its sharpness with the passing of the ages.

Review: The Blow Monkeys' classic debut Animal Magic sees a well-deserved 4xCD reissue, physically looking back on the year of 1986, in which elegant lead singles such as 'Digging Your Scene' took New York by storm. The album blends pop, funk, new wave and soul, likening the human condition rightly to that of animals - and it's no surprise that there's an anticapitalist bent running throughout the album too. A wealth of bonus material here appears too, as sophisticated sax, synth and reverb sway off into the horizon.

Review: Swedish-American rockers Blues Pills really don't do things other than on their terms. Birthdays is album number four, and sees the band once again returning to a mainstream rock sound that is very much them. Chart-worthy, but perhaps not quite right in terms of where today's big saleable sounds are, it unashamedly throws caution at the wind and goes all out on everything from emotional quality to musicality. In the end, you've got riffs that wouldn't sound out of place on a Bon Jovi record, vocals that nod to the likes of Pink and Lady Gaga at various points, and an overall feeling that these guys have been doing their business a lot longer than they have. If anyone is looking for where the late-1990s guitar-pop-rock sound is, then we've found it.

Review: Finally, the debut Bochum Welt album Module 2 has been reissued after an initial run on Rephlex. Bochum Welt (Gianluigi Di Costanzo) has just recently celebrated 30 years of releasing music. His brand of IDM, electro and techno has been often copied but never equaled. His futuristic music seems to always be forward thinking and ultimately, timeless sounding. This edition is on matching green vinyl and includes all the classic material of the first release. Fans of AFX, Squarepusher and Cylob are sure to be aware of Bochum Welt. But for those who aren't....

Review: Fans of veteran rock band Bush have long been waiting for the arrival of this ninth full-length. It is their first new release since their hugely successful and widely acclaimed 2020 album The Kingdom and it has a punchy, uptempo swing to it that finds them in top form. Plenty of tunes retain the band's signature moodiness with infectious hooks and big riffs detailing each of the tracks. 'Kiss Me I'm Dead' is a real standout with its heavy guitar jabs and strained vocals well as an epic chorus.

Review: Originally released in 1984, the debut EP from Swiss extreme metal pioneers, Celtic Frost, ushered in an entirely new era of malevolence, theatricality and abrasion to a genre in dire need of macabre redirection. Morbid Tales introduced many to the more occult musings the metal scene could ponder, while their hyper-aggressive re-imagining of thrash riffage cast a desolate shadow over the jovial spirit many initially brought to the forefront. Replacing tattered jeans and leather jackets with corpsepaint, and a stoneface seriousness to their delivery, it's little wonder how much of the developing black and death metal scenes would (and continue to) be shaped by this first collection, almost four decades on.

Review: Following their early slew of EPs that would slowly begin to reshape the modern metal landscape, it was 1985's full-length debut, To Mega Therion, that would immortalise Swiss extreme metal provocateurs, Celtic Frost, as the macabre saviours of a scene unaware of the perils that awaited it. Credited alongside Venom's aptly titled, 'Black Metal', as the true genesis of a scene and formula still not altered too greatly in the near four decades since inception, it's little wonder how many classic acts from Mayhem to Darkthrone cite the band, and this project in particular, as an integral influence. Sporting some of the literal greatest extreme metal cuts to ever grace tortured ears, such as, 'The Usurper', and the twisted epic, 'Circle Of The Tyrants', along with the iconic H.R. Giger drawn artwork, this classic can be traced back from the vast majority of black, death, doom and almost any other horrific subgenre of metallic origin.

Review: The seminal sophomore effort from Swiss extreme metal icons, Celtic Frost, heralded the dawn of their avant-garde greatness, by eschewing the majority of the thrash fury that made the, 'Morbid Tales', EP, and momentous debut full-length, 'To Mega Therion', such vital genre staples. Plumbing the depths of gothic, atmospheric, cavernous chaos, 'Into the Pandemonium', originally released in 1987, showcased the bleak artistry that could be imbued into the metal scene without sacrificing an ounce of aggression. Drawing on outsider influences and sonics more akin to industrial and modern classical arrangements, as well as being the first LP to feature bassist and backing vocalist Martin Eric Ain, it's little wonder why the project is still held in such high regard more than three decades on. Where their earlier work can be intrinsically linked to the second wave of Norwegian black metal, these more expansive, latter-day offerings would serve as a vital blueprint for avant-garde metallics, with its ripple effect still being felt to this day.

Review: Swiss extreme metal pioneers, Celtic Frost, are arguably one of the most quintessential acts of the late 80s scene, who along with the likes of Venom and Bathory, managed to usher in a grim era of the most challenging, abrasive, occult-inspired variety. The Danse Macabre boxset serves as a time capsule of the band's formative years, spanning their early works from 1984 to 1987, including the seminal full-lengths, 'To Mega Therion', and, 'Into The Pandemonium', along with a slew of their early EPs, including, 'Morbid Tales', 'Emperor's Return', and, 'Tragic Serenades'. Complete with glow in the dark vinyl, an additional 7", cassette, as well as miscellanea including a badge, patch, poster, and the 40-page book, 'A Morbid Tale', this is fan service done right, and a restorative gem of the band's early, glorious, evil reign.

Review: Having battled through a variety of trials and tribulations in recent times, including the loss of drummer Jon Brooks to cancer in 2013, The Charlatans sound both reflective and re-invigorated on Modern Nature, an album that manages to both underline their status as am outfit both possessed of a unique charisma and more than capable of surprises. The mood may be melancholy on occasion, but Tim Burgess' vocals have rarely sounded more heavy-lidded and charming, nor the band more vibrant and effervescent. Far removed from the baggy or Britpop tags that have dogged the band over the years, Modern Nature is a spirited and warmly-hued modern psychedelic masterclass.
