Review: Rashied Ali had a unique talent for transforming unlikely sound pairings into masterpieces. Following Interstellar Space with John Coltrane and Duo Exchange with Frank Lowe, he joined forces with violinist Leroy Jenkins for this album in 1975. Jenkins was fresh from the Revolutionary Ensemble and composed all pieces for this rare duet, which is now reissued on vinyl for the first time in nearly half a century. The deluxe set includes an unreleased session exploring standards, the sounds of Coltrane and some truly wild improvisations. A top treasure for jazz-heads.

Review: Jazz could bait controversy with a sense of mischief even back in the 50s, as Chet Baker and Art Pepper demonstrated when they released the pin-up sporting Playboys in 1957 with tracks like 'For Minors Only'. Of course, Hugh Hefner had something to say about that and so the album was reissued as Picture Of Heath in 1961, and it remains a marvellous entry in the discographies of these two jazz masters. As such, Blue Note turned back to this record for their Tone Poet series, as Baker's trumpet and Pepper's alto sax interact with Phil Urso's tenor sax, Curtis Counce's bass, Carl Perkins' piano and Lawrence Marable's drums. It's an all-time great sounding better than ever on this edition.

Review: Taking off where he left us on his Ubiquity albums, Whiskey Baron Bosq flies 1600 miles due south to Puerto Rico to work with a decorated troupe of local musicians and explore the island's sonic cauldron where calypso, Afrobeat, reggae and Latin all lick up a fiery furore. All wrapped up in Bosq's intoxicating dancefloor twist across the eight tracks we're hip-slinking to piano-stroking "Aquarembe", we're nodding and shaking to the sweet skanks of "San Jose 51", we're getting deep, down and slo-mo to the smouldering "Ron Blanco Con Coco" and whole load more. Vinyl only.

Review: Soul On Top has always been one of James Brown's more surprising and under celebrated albums. It was released in 1970, at a time when the Godfather of Soul was at the peak of his powers. Yet while most of Brown's releases of the period showcased his thrusting brand of sexually charged funk, Soul On Top saw him cover jazz, soul and big band standards in the company of Louie Belson's 18-piece "jazz orchestra". While hardly revolutionary - unlike, say, many of his albums of the time - the combination of Brown's impassioned vocals and Oliver Nelson's swinging arrangements still sounds fantastic. The cover of Brown's own "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" is particularly potent, and almost worth the admission price alone.

Review: Record Store Day and Black Friday 2023 continue to serve up the treasure even now as we roll into 2024. This latest pice, Creative Improvisation Ensemble, is from Marion Brown and Leo Smith who explore an experimental and avant-garde world of challenging jazz. It is freeform, unbound by rules and expectations and very much keeps you on your toes as the saxophones burst to life, express tortured emotions and peel away to nothing. Some cuts are more heavily percussive with tribal drums like 'And Then They Danced' and others are persuasive numbers that make you move.

Review: Polish producer Latarnik and American vocalist Anthony Mills collide on this new album for Polish label Astigmatic to explore lo-fi hip-hop, soul, dub and experimental electronics. Mills's falsetto vocal brings great Neo-soul warmth to Crack Rock with emotionally charged tones soaring over the production which ranges from sugary and 80s-tinged disco and boogie on 'Crack' to deep, seductive and gooey on 'Passive Lover' which is a more romantic sound. Latarnik's work is often minimal yet immersive which creates space for Mills' voice to shine and is delivered in equal parts spoken word, chant and soulful croon. The hypnotic, slow-burning soundscapes that result are both intimate and confrontational, ready to make you dance but also often just to feel. Unapologetically raw and deeply human, this one lingers long after the final track ends.

He has put out some well received albums on Brownswood, The Steve Reid Foundation and Jazzman Records and also tries his hand - successfully - at electronic music. Vocalist Liz Elensky has been part of the project since 2006 and this album finds the duo head in a new direction that delves deep into electronic sounds but with soulful jazz vibrations and contributions from the likes of Rocketnumbernine, The Maghreban and Khalab & Jesica Lauren amongst others. It results in an album that is as alluring as it is inventive.

Review: Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong came together first of all for their 1956 album Ella and Louis. Just a year later, the enduring jazz icons hooked up once more on Verve Records for the simply titled Ella and Louis Again. It was recorded at Radio Recorders and Capitol Studios in Hollywood and where their first album was all duets, this one features seven solo vocal tracks by either Armstrong or Fitzgerald amongst its dozen duet tracks. Louis only played trumpet on six of these tunes but there was such a vibe between the two artists that it was never seen as an issue.

Review: This album has never been reissued before which is something of a crime: it is heavy duty NYC salsa served up with a tropical Colombian 'CosteNo' filter. Each tune brims with vitality and skilled musicianship as trombone, accordion and deep bass are all layered up and led by rebel accordionist Alfredo Gutierrez. This is a copy of the original tracklist but with the addition of three hot new bounces cuts and some liner notes. Noted singer Lucho Perez of Sonora Dinamita fame is the final addition and brings extra flare to each of these irresistible jams.

Inner Life - "I Like It Like That" (7:26)
Metropolis - "I Love New York" (8:30)
Leroy Burgess - "Heavenly" (10:02)
Aurra - "A Little Love" (7:45)
Review: Unlike most disco re-edit EPs, Salsoul's latest instalment of 'Reflex Revisions' are "proper" remixes, making full use of original master stems and session tapes sourced from the parent artists themselves. With all four tracks handled by French producer and remixer The Reflex, we know we're in good hands here - he's been at it since 2012. Reflex Revisions don't just add a janky kick beneath a beatgridded 16-bar loop, but rather, they move and sway with the tracks' original feels. Our case in point: 'A Little Love' completely reimagines the drum section found on Aurra's 1983 original, making the whole sonic experience much clearer and brighter. As much can be said for Metropolis' downtempo 'I Love New York', on which Reflex here makes the song grander, wider. Compared to most re-editors, this is an impressive feat occurring in a different ballpark.

Review: Vijay Iyer lands on ECM with a new album that finds him helm a powerful new trio in which he is joined by creative musical powerhouses Tyshawn Sorey and Linda May Han Oh. The album was recorded at Oktaven Audio Studio in Mount Vernon, New York in December 2019 and finds the group play some of Iyer's finest original material from over the last 20 odd years. Also featured are Gerri Allen's 'Drummer's Song' as well as version of Cole Porter's 'Night and Day' that is nothing short of radical.

This jazz-funk delight pays homage to legends like Jimmy McGriff and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Previously collaborating on Lucas's Feel the Spirit album, they launch Galactico at Saint Paul Soul Jazz festival in France. Highlights include the James Brown-inspired 'Double Take,' Meters-esque 'Hey!', and the Latin groove 'El Gato' featuring Sam Bell and Haggis Horns' Malcolm Strachan. With nods to Sixto Rodriguez and a funky title track, this album showcases their vital musical prowess.

Review: A stunning album of big band music from Finnish composer, Kerkko Koskinen, featuring Linda Fredriksson on saxophone and the UMO Helskinki Jazz Orchestra, Agatha 2 is a sequel of sorts to their original Agatha album released in 2007. Tracing Koskinen's signature immensely emotive and dramatic approach to composition, this album sits beautifully between moody atmospheres and fully immersive rushes of cinematic sound. It is clear that Fredrikkson and Koskinen share a clear vision with her solo performances shining against the undulating orchestral backdrop. Taking on a distinctly melancholic and nostalgic mood, especially with the pieces 'Promenade' and 'Piana', the drums are positioned at a purposeful distance to the driving dynamics of the composition, adding a hint of melodic colour to the overall piece rather than being a central force. An inventive project that journeys forwards and backwards in time.

Review: North Carolina's L'Orange has been making his own path for a decade now. He makes music that is hazy and often a little delirious. This new album is him wanting to "confront my own creative process and day-to-day wellbeing managing mental illness in a healthy way for the first time." It is an inventive one from start to finish with a deeply personal vibe and additional vocals from none other than Nish Kumar, musical maverick Marc Rebillet and Mark Cox amongst others. The beats are deep and laced with soul, loose percussive jumbles and hooky melodies that linger long in the brain, and the heart.

Review: Few sounds transcend time like Afrobeat, and few artists defined it as profoundly as Tony Allen who has long been the genre's legendary heartbeat. In 2011, Allen recorded a masterful rhythmic session for Comet Records' Afrobeat Makers Series where his drumming, unconstrained and deeply expressive, speaks a universal truth through its unique cadence. On this album, La BOA-La Bogota Orquesta Afrobeat-engages Allen's legacy in a remarkable dialogue led by Daniel Michel. The Colombian band blends Afrobeat's essence with their unique rhythms and merges Caribbean beats, Pacific grooves and Andean influences into a fittingly lively tribute and a seamless cultural exchange where Bogota meets Lagos.

Just months after packing the Empty Bottle, the band returned to an even larger crowd, which served as proof of their ever-growing Chicago fanbase. Determined to keep the raw energy of their LA roots alive, they built a bright red round stage in the centre of the hall and were surrounded by fans dancing and singing from every side. The night was captured on film and tape by longtime collaborator Jacob Butler and now, the much talked about performance featuring original tracks, classic cumbia covers and a Smokey Robinson ballad finally makes its way to wax.

Review: La Mambanegra was founded by saxophonist Jacobo Velez in Cali, the world capital of salsa on the Pacific coast of Colombia. According to Salvador de Bahia, Cali is the city with the most African descendants. This strong Afro influence is clearly heard in the songs of the 15-member orchestra. El Callegueso y su Mala MaNa combines traditional salsa from the streets of New York City during the seventies with elements of Jamaican, Cuban and Colombian music, as well as funk and current hip-hop influences. Velez raised the genre "break salsa" for his simmering brew. It is presented by some of the most accomplished musicians in Colombia, including the living Latin jazz legend Eddy Martinez and the salsa band Niche, and stretches over ten, roller-coaster-like songs, with stories from the Colombian everyday life on the family history of the band founder. "El Callegueso, was the godfather of the album, but it is only when it comes to love, for example in the piece "Cantare para vos" or "El Blues de Yemanja", that is the tribute to one Ocean goddess.

Funk, Latin and soul are the foundations but plenty of regional styles like cumbia, guaracha, champeta and psychedelic melodies all add extra colour. It's rhythmically playful and restless from the group about which we know very little. This is their debut album after a few singles since 2019 and for those who like their music percussive, expressive and free flowing it is about as good as it gets so do not sleep on this limited bit of Colombian gold.

Collaborating with long-time partners like producer Gaby Kerpel and composer Daniel Martin, La Yegros crafts a mesmerizing fusion of acoustic and electronic elements on HAZ as she navigates funk, Andean flutes, electro-Cumbia, and more and cooks up a vibrant tapestry of emotions.

Certainly, there's plenty of variety in the textures, styles and tempos, from the disco-funk stomp of Herbal T hook-up "Brown Sugar" and sweet Northern Soul blast of "The Contender" (all fuzzy guitars and pleasing horns), to the soft soul shuffle of "Making It Right" and Breakestra-ish hip-hop funk of "Here We Go Again". Despite the variety, Gibbons is still at his best when really cutting loose, as the superb opener "Freedom" adeptly demonstrates.

Review: Having dabbled in numerous instruments from a young age - he's tinkled the ivories, blasted the alto sax, banged a few funky beats out on the drums and plucked a few tunes on the guitar - Lack Of Afro certainly isn't lacking in creative stock. This funky young dude has been making music since the age of 7 and now, at 26, Adam Gibbons has all but earned an honorary afro with the release of his debut album, "Press On".

Review: In 2013 Nicole Wray's Lady project shook speakers, massaged dancefloors and melted hearts the world over with its authentic soul and surging sentiments. Two years later, Truth & Soul re-amp the power with this collection of instrumentals; from the life-affirming, northern soul stomps, horns and strings of "Hold On" to the epic bluesy swoons of "Karma" to the big band motifs of "Please Don't Do It Again", this collection of instrumentals is a showcase of the attention to detail that went into the entire album's production. Seductive.

Review:  Lady Blackbird is the first singer to grace Foundation Music, and you'd best be paying attention to this vital new voice in the realm of soul jazz. Hailing from LA and blessed with a smoky voice to rival some of the greats, one listen to 'Blackbird' is all you need to be utterly captivated. The sultry playing from Deron Johnson, Jonathan Flaugher, Jimmy Paxson and Troy Andrews perfectly matches Blackbird's arresting voice, gliding between stormy explosions and the softest of touches to match the mood. Black Acid Soul is perhaps the perfect description for the music, shot through with a streak of 60s psych but taking it to some dark corners - a true expression rendered in sumptuous, noirish hues.

Review: Lady Wray is one of the brightest talents in the field of neo-soul, and now she's back with her second album. There's something ultimately classic about her sound on this new record, tapping into the deep heritage of US soul as you might expect to hear from Gloria Ann Taylor or Minnie Ripperton, with bombastc songwriting and a gutsy, 70s-indebted production that sounds like honey in your ears. Throw in a tough boom-bap slant on the drums - not least on 'Games People Play' - which should have old-skool hip-hoppers nodding with approval, and you've got a new essential from the ever-strong Big Crown stable

Review: Strut has managed to secure the rights to the first official remastered reissue of Lafayette Afro Rock Band's rare funk and Afro gem, 'Malik,' which originally dropped in 1974. In 1971, the Bobby Boyd Congress, an undocumented Afro-American septet, ventured from the US to France, seeking new horizons. They transformed into Ice upon Boyd's return and then connected with producer Pierre Jaubert who helped to shape their sound amid Paris's vibrant African scene. Then again later renamed, this time as Lafayette Afro Rock Band, they delved into instrumental Afro-funk, birthing classics like 'Soul Makossa' and 'Darkest Light.' Initially overlooked, 'Malik' gained hip-hop acclaim, with 'Conga' and 'Darkest Light' becoming iconic samples. This meticulously remastered reissue celebrates Lafayette Afro Rock Band's musical legacy.

Review: Lagartijeando is a key figure in the alt-Latin electronic scene alongside the likes of Nicola Cruz and Chancha Via Circuito. He makes an essential return here with 7 Caminos, a fourth career long player with Wonderwheel. Recorded between Cholula, Mexico and Tarapoto in Peru, it transports you in double quick time to the South American jungle and Mexican Altiplano volcanoes. Sunny melodies take flight over shuffling rhythms, dubby basslines unfurl like flowers at dawn and intimate vocal whispers bring a human touch to the rhythms. A gorgeous soundtrack to a perfect afternoon of escapism.

Arriving with 13 original tracks, Lage's compositions navigate a rich tapestry of American music genres, from gospel hymns to California singer-songwriter vibes and skronky jazz. The album's lead single '76' showcases a hard-driving blues essence, while 'As It Were' offers an atmospheric acoustic ballad. With contributions from Kris Davis, Patrick Warren, Levon Henry, and his trusted trio with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, Lage presents a multifaceted musical journey that captivates and enthrals in equal measure here.

Review: Somewhere between Latin guitar and six-string melancholy lies the wistful works of Julian Lage, whose latest LP 'View With A Room' hits heavy with a reminiscent string of 10 pieces for solo guitar. Teaming up with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, Lage expands his horizons from the inward-focused 'Squint' to include new collaborations, including several cameo appearances from Bill Frisell on accompanying guitar and voice. Affecting and emotional; the perfect soundtrack to a Midwesternly desolate holiday or a mutual, not-too-bad breakup.

Review: Reissued and remastered for the first time, with its original tracklist and cover, Francis Lai's eerie-romantic soundtrack for A Man And A Woman, directed by Claude Lelouch, matches the film's subject. That is, two widowers meet for the first time at their children's school, and find themselves plagued by haunting visions and flashbacks of their former spouses. Netting the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1966, the film has gone on to set the benchmark for French romantic soundtracks, a mark set by the score's rose-tinted sonic scenery, diegesis-breaking narrations and almost automatic singing.

Review: Claude Lelouch's 1966 romantic drama, translated into English as A Man and A Woman, is simultaneously filled with hope and tragedy. It's a passionate story but not one without warnings and lessons about the challenges of getting over loss and learning to trust again. It was also a huge success at the time of its release, grossing $14million at the US box office, which was big bucks back then for a foreign language movie. As the title suggests, the plot follows two single parents - he and she - who lost their spouses in horrible circumstances, namely suicide and an accident, and set about building new lives for themselves, which then cross paths. To complement this, French composer Francis Albert Lai created a sexy, playful, but highly emotional score, which ranges from heartfelt songs to jazz cool and laidback rock 'n' roll.

Review: On Good Together, Lake Street Dive embraces a renewed sense of purpose and focus on unity amidst social divisions. Described as "joyful rebellion", the album blends energetic, danceable sounds with a defiant, principled message that makes a long-lasting impression. "There's so much pain and division but living in anger isn't sustainable," drummer Mike Calabrese explains adding, "Joy is a powerful way to sustain yourself, and we wanted to remind people of that." The album he has made with his bandmates was produced by Grammy-winner Mike Elizondo and is the first time they collaborated on songwriting from the start. In turn, this expanded their creative range and has brought a new depth to their sound.

Review: Lakeside's Fantastic Voyage dates back to 1980 and is also the name of the number one hit the Dayton, Ohio group had in 1981. The song topped the r&b chart and marked their one and only ever entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 55. Sample hounds may know that hip-hop star Coolio used parts of this song for his own hit of the same name in 1994. The rest of the tunes are just as much a great and funky fusion of soul, disco and r&b with great vocal harmonies, guttural male growls and infectious drums.

If you're a lover of Brazilian psychedelic folk, you will already be well familiar with this utter masterpiece from Brazilian actor and musician Guilherme Lamounier. He recorded three such records in the 1970s, and this, the second of them, is widely regarded as the best. It has long been a real rarity and holy grail amongst diggers after being created with composer Tiberio Gaspar and recorded at Radio Gazeta Studios in Sao Paulo. Element sou US hippie culture as well as love song stylings, angular funk and piano ballads all feature with plenty of great musicianship and rousing lyrics. Truly escapist stuff.

Backed by a band made up of fellow Philly musicians such as percussionist Keno Speller and Baba Robert Crowder, other influential figures like Tunde Kuboye also featured and help to lend it its richly musical, afro drenched sound. Full grooves, trademark flutes and plenty of spiritual, positive vibes abound throughout the tracks which surfaced as one of the label's final CD releases in 1995 and has never before appeared on vinyl.

Review: Simultaneously reaching back into the roots of Samba whilst reconfiguring the sound for a new context, Dominco Lancelloti's Sramba is an ingenious contribution to the world of Brazilian jazz. Recorded over two months in Lancelloti's home studio in Lisbon, and inspired by a couple of Russian-designed synths that came into the artist's possession, this is a project that was born out of experimentation. The opening track, 'Ere', features hypnotic guitar riffs and skittering drum sequences that gradually build into an infectious groove over the course of the track. On the B-side, 'Nada Sera De Outra Maneira' takes a softer turn with glittering hints of piano and a central narrative driven by velvety vocals. This is an exciting new take on Samba that opens up a new world of creative possibilities.

It's a comforting, welcoming, soothing and serene ambient-jazz blend with thoughtful melodies a plenty and nice lazy rhythms. It's 'desert music inspired by the city' says the artist and is a pleasurable escape to emotionally rich places that go gentle on your soul. The pads are soft and smudged, the percussion is organic and deft, the melodies often fade to nothing as if distracted and the whole thing is a timeless work of great beauty.

To prove his point, Fryer has trawled through the Philadelphia musician's archive of recordings (it stretches back to 1979) and put together this essential retrospective. There's much to admire throughout, with the assembled cuts mostly mining the overlooked artist's soul, disco and 1980s rhythm and blues work. We'd highlight individual tracks for praise, but such is the quality throughout that naming favourites seems pointless. Take our advice: grab a copy while you can.

Review: Although hardly known outside of synth-nerd circles, Teddy Lasry made some incredible records during the 1970s and '80s. The son of musicians whose eclectic careers included stints in one of France's first experimental electronic music bands, Lasry first rose to prominence as part of pioneering prog rock band Magma before embarking on a synthesizer-fuelled solo career. This fine compilation gathers together the cream of his mid-70s-to-mid-80s solo career, focusing on a mixture of Wally Badarou style jazz-funk, Balearic-minded synthesizer reggae, colourful ambient soundscapes, worldbeat workouts, fretless bass-sporting soundscapes and atmospheric late-night workouts. It's a genuinely brilliant collection all told and one that we'd highly recommend.

Review: Timo Lassy is one of Finland's leading jazz artists and one of the scene's best tenor saxophonists. Here he is back on We Jazz with an album that sees him introduce a new combo in the form of bassist Ville Herrala and drummer Jaska Lukkarinen, who are both We Jazz artists in their own right. Together they have a super tight sound with swing and funk to spare. Riff-ready sax sounds drive each tune, whether sinking to melancholic depths or soaring to crisp and airy highs. Each tune is also elevated by some subtle electronic additions from Lassy, Dalindeo frontman Valtteri Laurell Poyhonen and Ilmiliekki Quartet pianist Tuomo Prattala.
