I Want To Be Loved By You
Please Truthful
Review: Lotus Land Record's amazing underground funky disco release from Pittsburgh was originally released in 1980 on Jeree Records. Both sides of this 45 have went on to become firm underground classics of today. A side "I Wanna Be Loved By You" is a monstrously catchy uptempo disco tune which instantly captivates even the toughest dance floors, regarded by many as a deep house classic even though it is disco from 1980. B side "Please Be Truthful" is a brooding female vocal accompanied by blaxploitation rhythms. Both tunes are desperately sought after and until now virtually unavailable to the public. Original copies of the records will sell for over US$600, this may be the only chance today's DJs have to own this classic record.

Ladies & Gentlemen
Review: The man with more beats than a Columbian drug lord has marching powder makes his debut release on Freestyle with "Audio Fdelity". Hailing from Perth Australia Fdel has been a name on the music scene down under for many years. Making his name with the Triple J playlisted "El Questro" in 2002, he's been steadily building his career as party rocker number one and sample slinger par excellence. Packed with more cuts and 'breakface' inducing hooks than you can shake a stick at, this one man production outfit is ably assisted by Downsyde's DJ Armee on the scratches. Finding it's home amongst the funk/hip hop/breaks scene, fans of Fort Knox Five, Dynamo Productions and Kraak & Smaak will not be disappointed with the bouncing breaks packed into tracks such as "Rocksteady", "Get Up On Ya Feet" and "Ladies And Gentlemen".

The Regrooved Series II (Juno exclusive blue vinyl 12'')
Cat: GG02 JUNOEXCLUSIVE. Rel: 13 Sep 10
Feature Cast - "Chuck Berry"
QDup Foundation - "Cosmic Soul"
Rephrase - "Get Loose"
Review: One of Good Groove's most popular releases gets an exclusive repress on clear dark blue vinyl before the label ends its run of sample based funk-outs in order to focus on original output. Catskills artist Feature Cast gets busy with a bunch of accapellas including a certain woman of the ghetto over an uptempo horn heavy funk groove. On the flip the mysterious QDUP foundation drown a cavalcade of classic hip-hop samples over a loose mid tempo bump.

The Bull Is Coming (feat The Devil's Personal Band)
Review: One of funk's longest standing representatives, Fields continues to contribute to myriad genres, including contemporary acts like Kraak & Smaak. For this reissue, however, Tramp take us back to 1979 with a snapshot from his debut album Let's Talk It Over. Tight swings and frenetic horn work give both sides a real JBs thrust while The Devil's Personal Band are allowed to let loose on their own on "The Bull Is Coming". Another successful reboot of a once rare-as-hens-teeth 7", Tramp have well and truly spoilt us.

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (feat Brendan Reilly - radio edit) (4:55)
Iguana Strut (5:05)
Review: Any self-respecting funk dancefloor will always react to a good Michael Jackson cover version, that's why there have been so many over the years. Adding to this canon of Jacko cover versions are London jazz funk troupe The Filthy Six who bring their take on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" to this 7" shaped return to Acid Jazz. Long term fixtures of the label, this seven is in fact a prelude to the upcoming third album from The Filthy Six, due on Acid Jazz later this year, and their dashing live funk take on one of MJ's finest cuts will probably remain a dancefloor favourite long after. DJs don't sleep on the taut instrumental cut "iguana Strut" that lines the flip - it's just as good.

Mr Matatwe (Keep It Up) (feat Andy Ross On Flute)
Armon's Theme (feat Matt Cronin On Trumpet)
Review: "Mr Matatwe (Keep It Up)", by Flying Fish, is the debut release on new label Skyline. It is a great new double-header 7". On the a-side, "Mr Matatwe (Keep It Up)" is a superb up-tempo, floor-moving, hip-shaking dance groove that is sure to make you move you feet. On the b-side is "Armon's Theme", a timeless classic, made in honour of the Armon Superpiano, an electric keyboard that instantly evokes the sound of seventies Italian porn flicks and soundtracks.

Criminality
Review: Formed via the Broadway musical Fela!, The Fontanelles serve up their debut on the consistently exciting (and wonderfully unpredictable) First Word imprint. The result is two pieces of raw, emphatic Afro funk. "Pinprick" has a touch of the snake charmer about it with eastern minor key phrases and wild jazz noodles on the muted sax. "Criminality" comes armed with much more gusto with lively drums and a powerful carnival attitude. Strange name but apt... Anyone with a penchant for Afro funk will have soft spot for The Fontanelles before long.

Tripple Cherry (dub)
Tripple Cherry
Review: The first European offering (and the first vinyl release) from San Francisco's minimal electro-funk duo, Foxgluv. Their full live incarnation has built a reputation Stateside as a band not-to-miss with their genre-bending Californian cyber-sex-a-delica, most notably at festivals like the world-famous Burning Man in the Nevada desert. The 12" EP includes the best 2 cuts from their WEA-recorded Flame & Fortune album plus a totally exclusive remix by renowned "ambient techno innovator" (All Music Guide) Jonah Sharp of Spacetime Continuum fame. Triple Cherry is a sparse, sexy slice of down-tempo electronica with a fresh sound and a fat laid-back beat, while the flip-side’s XXX Files raises the stakes (not to mention the eyebrows, or indeed, the pulse) with it's X-rated rap about transexual alien abduction recounted over a booty-licous beat that suggests everything from George Clinton's Mothership Connection to "A Trip-hop Deee-lite..." (The San Francisco Chronicle).

Just Can't Give You Up
Party Down
Review: The mysterious Freaky Funk boys have been locked away for a while now. Some say Harlem, others think the East Midlands. The boys have been busy digging through the crates to deliver a series of disco/funk bombs, re-edited in fine style and destined to shake up any party. They start off with 80's disco funk boys Mystic Merlin. Originally called Mystic Merlin’s Magic Band, they started off their musical careers by incorporating magic into their live shows before being taken seriously on the soul/funk scene. The Freaky Funk boys re-edit in fine style "Just Can't Give You Up" which was originally released on Capitol in 1980 and was also a top 20 hit the same year! On the flip they deliver "Party Down", a block party funk nugget destined to make train spotters everywhere foam at the mouth. Little Beaver (AKA Willie "Beaver" Hale) released this track in 1974 on RCA Victor (France). It's a block party classic and extremely hard to find on vinyl. The track gets cut up and extended and turned into a sure-fire dancefloor bomb.

Fresh Mark & Black Hawk - "I Got The Number" (vocal mix)
Black Hawk - "I Got The Number" (feat The Soul Investigators - instrumental)
Review: Pretty unknown to this day, Fresh Mark and Black Hawk are two new producers of superfunky HipHop grooves which hopefully attract more attention in the near future. Their first release is in fact something special. The vocal version of ´I Got The Number´ has a typical deep funk feel combined with rough mc-ing over the top. The instrumental side is a collaboration with one of the finest deep funk bands ever came out of Europe, The Soul Investigators.

Party Of The Century
Manifest Party
Review: The inimitable funkateers known as Funk Burners return with a second round of self styled Funky Burner party heaters effortlessly proving there ain't no party like a Funk Burners party across the five tracks/tools. Anyone with a base appreciation of samples will recognise much of what makes up the two variants of "Funky Music Party" though it's the devilish potency with which the Burners assemble the bumping rhythms and funked out riffery that impresses on both the beat heavy and scratchadelic versions. An accapella tool is also included for the more imaginative minds out there. On the flip "Party Of The Century" is a pretty self explanatory shameless melding of many a party mentioning track across a neat mid tempo disco rap bump, whilst "Manifest Party" ramps up the speed but retains the hip-hop feel.

Stop The Bus
Soul Food (reprise)
Review: "Stop The Bus" is another superb release from the home of funky beats, Skyline Recordings. This is the second single from Funkshone. "Stop The Bus" is an instrumental feast for the dancefloor and the scratch DJ alike. No horns this time around, but with a wider focus on heavy drums, bass and chunks of good old Hammond organ to keep you satisfied.

Purification (part 1) (3:45)
Purification (part 2) (3:17)
Review: Funkshone are Mike Bandoni (former Acid Jazz/Ninebar Records musician and producer) and some of the UK's finest session musicians. This debut single 'Purification' Parts 1 and 2 sees Mike playing every instrument, bar the brass, which was laid down courtesy of Andy Ross and Ralph Lamb (Easy Access Orchestra/Roots Manuva), and gives this tune its anthem-like feel. Don't be surprised if you find yourself humming or whistling the main horn-line after a couple of spins - it's infectious! One of the most noted aspects about this record is the sound. Authenticity is dear to the heart of Funkshone, and this is evident when the needle drops on this heavy-weight funk dance-floor smash, as the listener is taken back to the 1960s. Another attractive feature for many a battle/scratch DJ are the breaks. Both sides of this 45 are riddled with clear, crisp and downright enormous drum breaks that will leave any Purdie, Idris or Clyde Stubblefield fans more than satisfied.

Droppin (instrumental)
Review: Welcome to the Seventh release from Skyline, 'Droppin', yet another funk bomb from Funkshone. This time a vocal driven track featuring explosive vocals courtesy of Natasha Watts fused with a killer head-nod groove which is loaded with the usual party tricks; super heavy drums and wicked musicianship across the board from this one man band. On the A-side 'Droppin' is a hard mid-tempo groove, taking the Funkshone act into a whole new territory. Vocals by Natasha Watts who smashes home a great funky song. While on the B-side 'Droppin (Inst)' is a wicked instrumental version, with booming drums and a razor sharp groove that, at times seems heavier than the vocal cut.

Yemana (Funky Bompa edit)
Review: Brussels' leading tropical enthusiast and global groove selector takes two traditional African standards and reshapes them playfully for the floor. "Mesida" is one of his wildest constructions to date, taking a biguine drum track and chant he's applied all manner of SFX and sirens. File under 'post apocalyptic Afro beat'. "Yemana", meanwhile is much more light-hearted, taking a sun-kissed benga standard and anchoring it with a warm, weighted 4/4 kick it's the perfect feel-good foil to the craziness of the A.

Florence Miller - "The Groove I'm In"
Four Below Zero - "My Baby's Got ESP"
Review: Brilliant limited-edition special 7" release to this signing of the P&P Records group of labels. Both of these rare 1970's early Disco stormers have been in great demand over the last few years, both from Modern Soul and early Disco collectors. The 'A' side features the irresistible nitty-gritty early R'n'B Disco of Florence Miller's hypnotic "The Groove I'm In" which never let's up from the git-go! The 'AA' side features a record that has been in demand for the last 20 years and has never stopped being a massively collectible rarity whatever the era, so welcome to the original 7" mix of Four Below Zero's magical "My Baby's Got E.S.P." - a beautiful Patrick Adams-produced mid 1970's Disco rarity which should be in everyone's collection. As with all Suss'd 7" releases, this will have a one-off pressing run and will never be re-pressed.
