Look Into My Eyes (reissue)
Cat: BEWITH 012TWELVE. Rel: 22 Apr 20
Look Into My Eyes (6:49)
Express (4:55)
Review: Brit-funk combo 52nd Street are undeniably best-known for their 1983 single on Factory Records, "Look Into My Eyes", which came accompanied by some killer remixes from John "Jellybean" Benitez and sailed closed to the NYC electro sound. The Manchester outfit's roots were in jazz-funk though, as this essential reissue of their 1982 debut single proves. "Look Into My Eyes" is simply superb: a warm, woozy and gently groovy affair full of attractive lead vocals, elastic slap bass, colourful synthesizer lines and dreamy chords. If you're after some more up-tempo dancefloor pressure, check out flipside "Express" - a riotous affair rich in hammered-out Clavinet lines, jaunty lead lines and energetic percussion.

Release The Beast (4:50)
Let Love In (4:34)
Review: American funk band Breakwater is best known for their hit "Release The Beast," which gets a reissue treatment by Be With. Even if you don't know the name, you'll recognise the track's withering lead riff because it was sampled by Daft Punk for their iconic "Robot Rock". It's mad to think such a futuristic sound was created somewhere in Philly in 1979, but it was. The flip side houses the smooth and buttery "Let Love In", a feel good, deep cut funk gem with vocal harmonies, bulbous bass and hip swinging claps.

One Step Ahead (2:34)
I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face (2:43)
Review: "One Step Ahead" by American soul singer Aretha Franklin was released by Columbia Records in 1965. The A-side of the single reached the Rhythm & Blues singles chart of the time and ranked at #18. On the flip, "I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face" was taken from her 1964 album entitled Runnin' Out Of Fools. The single was released two years before Aretha achieved stardom when she joined Atlantic Records. The A side cut was not included on any of her Columbia studio albums and remains one of her rarest releases. The song has risen in familiarity due to its use in recent films, such as the music documentary Muscle Shoals and in the Academy Award winning drama Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins.

Melodies Of Love (5:20)
Walking In The Rain (5:27)
Review: Freeezy does it. John Rocca's more synth-based side project Pink Rhythm continues its reissue revival with this highly sought-after 12" that's not been reissued since 1985. Peak yacht funk with all the lavish production flourishes of the era, and strong traces of jazz, each cut stimulates: "Melodies Of Love" is all about the falsettos and Balearic charm while "Walking In The Rain" is a sultry sax-blaster with some of the most powerful bass walks Beggars Banquet ever pressed. Cult.

(You) Got What I Need (2:57)
Powerful Love (2:06)
Review: Iconic soul from 1968 and Rhode Island wanderer Freddie Scott, famously sampled by Biz Markie, "(You) Got What I Need" is one of those records you know before you even hear it. Freddie's balance of sincerity and swing bring a powerful presence to the big R&B groove where the band and backing vocals are following Scott's lead to the measure. Driven by more of an upbeat northern soul stomp, "Powerful Love" was no fading b-side either. A vital piece of soul history.

Magic (5:34)
Magic (version) (6:13)
Review: Quintessential Brit funk from 1982; Side On was a one off project from three members of Freeez and Potion, and "Magic" was unfortunately, their only official release. Cited by the likes of Dam Funk as an influence, the raw funk oozing through the mix on both versions was ahead of its time and veering towards more of a proto house sound that kicks dancefloors like a mule. The standard vocal is much more focused on Rick Clarke's strong vocal while the version goes all out with full bass runs and the obligatory saxophone solo. Abracadabra... Reach out and grab this.

Review: Serious reissue business: Be With take us back to 1971 for Air's one and only album. The brainchild of Googe Coppola (who you may recognise from Fire Island or cameos with Jeremy Steig) and her partner in jazz Tom Coppola, you can hear vapour trails of the pastoral, laidback folk of the late '60s with a more forthright funk energy and jazz mindset as the lovers and their bandmates dazzle us with meandering melodies and stories; from The Doors level organ frenzy of "Baby I Don't Know Where I Love" to the galloping momentum of "In Our Time" that suddenly stops dead into an almost medieval breakdown by way of ballads such as "Sister Bessie" and Afrobeat-style horn chaos like "Lipstick", this really captures an exciting time in music and, if the music is as honest as it seems, a rather exciting time in the lives of the Coppolas too...

Review: Geoff Bastow's Music To Varnish Owls By might just win the title for best album name in history, but don't let that playful label fool youithis is serious library funk. If you're familiar with Bastow's work, it's probably through his disco gems like K.I.D.'s 'You Don't Like My Music' and 'Don't Stop.' Yet, this 1975 classic is the true starting point. Soulful and unfiltered, the tracks are ripe for sampling; think Madlib before Madlib. Forget that elusive L300 original and dive into this reissue instead.

Review: Produced and sleeked out at Opal Studios in NYC, back in 1975, Buari's self-titled LP has been a cornerstone of international highlife music since it was first released. The original is now an arduous item to find at a decent price, so we thanks the Be With label for having repackaged an essential Afro LP that is a must have for anyone into anything outside a constant beat drum. "Karam Bani" opens with a forceful helping of funk, percussive to to the max, and this same hypnotic groove formula is present across the entirety of the A-side, making this a sampler's dream come true. On the flip, "Iro Le Pa" is the stand-out tune for us, a rhythm that makes Theo Parrish's Ugly Edits seems kinda tame! Recommended.

Review: Changes is Keni Burke's most notable album not least because it featured his stone-cold classic and slow motion dance floor heater 'Risin to the Top.' The seductive and warm soul and funk fusion alone is worth the cover price for this one but there is plenty more to enjoy too, This album first came in 1982 and has been pretty hard to find ever since it landed on RCA and it's a true masterpiece of the sophisticated 80s groove sound. Top-notch funky soul comes thick and fast with Keni's buttery smooth vocals front and centre on each tune.

Review: Ian Carr and the Nucleus crew were real favourites of US hip hop master Madlib. He valued their dark, brooding, menacing beats and spooky soundtracks and this album is a perfect example of that adsorbing broodiness. It came on Vertigo in 1973 and was in part funded by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It started off life as a live show and then with an expanded cast become an album recording with help from vocalist Norma Winstone. Be With have remastered the whole record from original tapes and the sleeve has also been restored to its full original glory.

Review: As part of Be With Records' spectacular efforts in reissuing many of the classic albums under Tele Music's 1970s library music belt, perhaps none can be considered so hilariously frank as Pierre-Alain Dahan's Continental Pop Sound, which, truly, has a Continental pop sound. The French drummer, percussionist and composer was a key member of the legendary Arpadys, Disco & Co, Voyage, Tumblack (with Wally Badarou and Sauveur Mallia) and Jef Gilson Septet - but his later work with Tele was smooth exercise in personal mastery, brushing ahainst the many meandering strands of the instrumental funk, rock and pop tree; all the pieces, though myriad in style, tempo and metre, are held together by a beautifully soft and atmospheric touch.

Review: The Tele Music catalogue follows a long tradition of library music mores; stock patterned album art and themed series included. Originally from 1973, Rhythmiques functions as one of the label's most iconic releases. Written entirely in collaboration between French composer and percussionist Pierre Dahan and synthesist Mat Camison, it features tense funk, blunted jazz and heavy breaks all the way. It is considered the rightful sequel to Continental Pop Sound, and despite the origin as library music intended for TV and film, has endured as a vital album for producers and DJs.

Review: A new spate of Tele Music library classics reissues from the 70s houses this one from 1976. Once more, legendary composer and drummer Pierre Alain Dahan hears his timely work reissued - this time in collaboration with his eternal guitar colleague Slim Pezin, a many-timed collaborator with Dahan. Contrasting to Dahan's many more experimental works, such as the prototypical 'Rhythmiques' album (which is far more out-there, almost primordial-sounding) 'Neo Rhythmiques' is an absolute killer of scorching, uptempo jazzy soul-funk, demonstrating what humanity as whole has achieved since, by harnessing said rhythmic primordium for its own funky ends.

Review: Although the UK's Be With Records are indeed masters of reissues, we didn't really expect them to be releasing Ned Doheny material. Don't get us wrong, he is the master of blue-eyed soul in our world, and it is a surprising yet much appreciated release! This self-titled LP is the master's debut, a 1973 cross-over that has always had the diggers' panties in a twist thanks to its funky sensibility and rock-infused backbone. There's hit after hit on here, starting with the Southern-style riffs of "Fineline", and swiftly moving onto more soulful territories with the likes of "On & On" or "Lashambeaux". While his Numero reissues have been clearly disco-tinged, this album is more contemplative, more rooted in country rock and it makes one hell of a roadside companion. Recommended.

Yet madly it's not been available on vinyl for almost its entire lifetime. Here newly emerged vinyl-revivalists Be With have reissued 500 copies. Review: Cleveland Eaton had an accomplished life as a jazz musician, whether throwing down on piano, saxophone, trumpet, tuba or bass, up to his passing in 2020. As well as recording for the legendary Black Jazz, in 1973 he also released this armour-plated heater on Gamble. The cover is something else, it must be said, but the grooves contained within will soon dispel any prior judgements. These are hot and heavy instrumental funk-outs for crate-diggers, beat-flippers and those who simply enjoy losing themselves in the finest funk money can buy. With some familiar versions slipped in from 'Day Dreaming' to 'Betcha By Golly Wow', there's also a comforting familiarity to the music, even if it sounds like nothing else you've heard before.

Still as swampy, woozy and immersive as it was 13 years ago, From The Soil To The Soul stirs a bewitching brew that includes ingredients from every corner; bluesy, sleazy funk, Balkan folk, hip-hop and large doses of cosmic soul. Now sounding warmer and wavier on heavyweight vinyl, fans have been pulling kickflips for this for a long, long time.

Review: For their latest deep dive into the world of library music, Be With Records has plundered the catalogue of German outlet Selected Sound. Comprising cuts in a variety of related styles recorded by a string of in-house outfits, 'Blue Butterfly' was originally mailed to subscribers in the film, television and advertising industries way back in 1971. It has largely stood the test of time brilliantly, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the fuzz-fuelled, flute-sporting car-chase heaviness of Hardy Jet Band's 'Sorry, Doc!', the 'Relight My Fire'-inspired big band funk-rock of 'Safari Track' by the same combo, the spaghetti western-on-the-moon flex of 'Lady In Space' by Orchestra Klaus Wuestoff' and the appallingly titled but utterly joyous 'Pop Happening' by the Jan Troysen Band.

Review: Al Hirt's Soul in the Horn is a standout in his catalog, offering a surprising detour into soul-jazz that captures a genuine and expressive energy absent from his typical easy listening work. While Hirt may not be synonymous with soul-jazz like Blue Mitchell, this album shows his fierce talent and willingness to explore new territory. The standout track, 'Harlem Hendoo,' is a majestic soul-jazz fire that has become legendary among crate diggers for its slinky groove and timeless appeal. It's a song so vital that it towers above everything else on the album. However, Soul in the Horn offers more than just one gem; tracks like the opening cover of Booker T & the MG's 'Honey Pot' and the bluesy 'Sweetlips' also shine with soulful energy. Remastered by Simon Francis and expertly pressed by Record Industry in Holland, this reissue ensures that Soul in the Horn sounds better than ever.

Review: The late, great Walter 'Junie' Morrison may be best known for his contributions to killer records by Parliament/Funkadelic (whose 'One Nation Under a Groove' he wrote) and Ohio Players, but between 1975 and '84 he released a string of mostly excellent albums. Arguably the best of the bunch is 1976's Suzie Super Groupie, which has now been given the reissue treatment courtesy of Be With Records. Musically, it's a thrill-a-minute ride through P-funk, Ohio Players style flash-fried funk fusion, Sly Stone style funk-rock, synth-laden proto-boogie and cheery, soul-fired dancefloor workouts. That's there's no filler, just a string of killer cuts, is testament to Morrison's immense, sadly missed talents.

Review: German library institution Selected Sound is a revered source of music that for the second time here Be With dive deep into. Sound Inventions was made by Niagara drummer and library funk don Klaus Weiss Rhythm And Sounds and first put out in 1979. It pairs abstract funky grooves with Morodoer-esque synths, plenty of weird and wonderful samples and tripped out studio trickery to make for a real collector's item that will work in any setting, and especially knowing dance floors. Synth drenched, darkened Italo and deep disco all makes subtle appearances to help bolster this super cool record.

Review: Steve Leach's Ocean Potion, set for reissue on Be With Records, is a hidden gem of Balearic beach-funk from 1976, featuring Leachiknown today as Seasick Steveiin his earlier incarnation. Originally released exclusively in France on Philips, this LP is a funky AOR and blue-eyed soul masterpiece, brimming with vibrant, pop-funk energy. Recorded with the Crystal Grass Orchestra, the album boasts a lush orchestral sound that perfectly complements Leach's smooth vocals and the rich harmonies of a stellar ensemble of backing singers. The supporting musicians are legends from the French music scene, including Don Ray as arranger and synth player, Marc Chantereau on percussion, Slim Pezin on guitar, Andre Ceccarelli on drums, Christian Padovan on bass, and Pierre Halation on flute. Their combined talents create a groove that is both immediate and infectious, making it hard to believe this record has remained relatively obscure. The reissue by Be With Records has been carefully remastered by Simon Francis, ensuring the sound quality is impeccable. Cicely Balston's expert cutting preserves the record's integrity, while the original sleeve artwork, featuring a topless Leach reclining on a piano-laden flatbed truck at the beach, has been beautifully restored. This long-overdue reissue brings Ocean Potion back to the spotlight, where it rightly belongs.

Review: Sauveur Mallia's Spatial & Co. hears a well-deserved reissue on Be With, harkening back to the synth-drizzled French disco producer's creatively dreamy opus from 1979. With instrumental bits from the opener 'Future Vision' to the future-facing outback-ambience of 'Star Odyssey', this is a masterpiece of cosmic, electronic disco-funk that quite literally intends to transport its listeners through the cosmos (whether said journey is literally undertaken via an actual rocketship, or simply remains in the listener's drug-altered mind, is up to them).

Review: Be With Records continues to reissue gems from the vast archives of the KPM music library. They're planning on releasing a number of sets from legendary incidental music composer Keith Mansfield, starting with this gem from 1976. What makes the album so essential is its' super-funky A-side, which sees Mansfield and his band of musicians laying down a series of smoking, breakbeat-driven soul, funk and jazz-funk jams that were clearly inspired by Blaxploitation movies of the period. In keeping with library music albums of the period, the second side is a little more string-drenched and laidback, with far more luscious orchestration, big band style arrangements and "Pages From Ceefax" melodic motifs. It's all still great of course, just different in tone to the club-ready A-side cuts.

Review: Way back in the early '80s, Alec Mansion delivered a couple of albums that blended the sound of American electrofunk with a European synth-pop sensibility. Here, the most sought after of the two, 1983's eponymously titled effort, gets the reissue treatment. Featuring Mansion singing in French over backing tracks packed with squeezable synth bass, glistening guitars, wavy D-Train style solos, P-Funk motifs and hazy West Coast rock ticks, it's an album that should excite both boogie diggers and Balearic selectors. Certainly, there's a loved-up blue-eyed soul feel to some of the tracks, while others may notice subtle nods to classic Wings (the "Band on the Run" synth sound is all over the album) and early '80s Fleetwood Mac.

Taking in diverse styles from funk, soul and jazz through to Latin, Brazilian, samba and Afro-Cuban, Percussion Spectrum was originally produced in 1979 by legendary percussionists Barry Morgan (of Morgan Studios/Blue Mink fame) and top session musician Ray Cooper on Themes International Music. Remastered with audio from the original analogue tapes for vinyl, plus artwork restored from archive scans, this is another one of those essential library records that Be With themselves state 'should be out there for anyone who wants a copy.'

Review: Be With are busy reissuing a number of Nucleus albums and Alleycat sure is one of their best. It is packed with stone cold rhythms as well as having a red hot sleeve. The band put it out in 197 and it was their last for the Vertigo label, all meticulously produced by Jon Hiseman. It's as good as any of their work with its funk fusions of prog, jazz and rock all ageing brilliantly well. There are big riff-laden tunes, cop-funk chases and more lush and laidback pieces that will have you deep in the groove. It has all been remastered from original tapes so sounds as good as ever.

A number of their best records are in the process of being reissued now and Under The Sun is the latest. Review: Not to be confused with the US electro outfit of the same name, Nucleus was - as many readers will know - a pioneering British jazz-rock outfit helmed by Ian Carr, whose releases frequently drew on a wide palette of influences (think funk, soul, pyschedelic and progressive rock). They made a lot of great albums during the 1970s, though few are quite as inspired as 'We'll Talk About It Later', a wonderfully laidback and atmospheric 1971 set that has now been given the reissue treatment by the consistently impressive Be With Records. The many highlights include - but are in no way limited to - the bluesy, slow-motion shuffle of 'We'll Talk About It Later', the wah-wah guitar sporting summer bliss of 'Sun Child', the gently unfurling brilliance of 'Oasis' and the pleasingly heavy jazz-rock pulse of 'Ballad of Joe Pimp'.

Review: First released on Vertigo in 1975, the growling basslines and irresistible rolling grooves of Nucleus emerge in full force for Snakehips Etcetera - an infectiously energetic record that sounds as though it has barely aged a day. Opening onto the unctuous grooves of 'Rat's Bag', where a jubilant trumpet solo takes centre stage, this track instantly takes us into the heart of Nucleus' entirely distinctive terrain. On the B-side, the title track emerges at a slower pace and with synthesised elements moving to the fore - this is a release that perfectly demonstrates how electronics and instrumentation can be combined to reach new heights. With original copies of this release proving virtually impossible to score, we're thankful Be With have gifted the world with a much-needed re-release.
