Review: Originally released in 2003 as the companion piece to the preceding year's equally acclaimed Deliverance, the seventh full-length from renowned Swedish progressive death metal auteurs, Opeth, would mark their first unashamed wade into the waters of retro prog-rock, whilst opting to eschew essentially all metallic machinations. Embracing primary songwriter Mikael Akerfeldt's lush clean vocals, while sonically delving into delicate atmospherics elevated by the prominent use of a mellotron, Damnation has grown in the two decades since its initial release to become a much lauded fan favourite, with many being able to appreciate the sharp turn the group took while noting the reflective balance contrasted against its much more macabre sister album. From the opening notes of essential cut 'Windowpane' onwards, you're pulled into a frosted world of depressive romanticism where the only way out is through. Celebrating its 20 year anniversary with a long overdue reissue, this is a work designed to be spun and absorbed in all its haunting majesty.

Review: Following a successful, vital surgery, Ozzy has left little time to unveil details of his upcoming thirteenth studio album, and follow up to 2020's triumphant, 'Ordinary Man'. Later this year, we'll be introduced to the world of, 'Patient Number 9', which boasts a ludicrously impressive array of guest features from the likes of Zakk Wylde, Jeff Beck, Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses), Eric Clapton and the late, great Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. Black Sabbath guitarist extraordinaire, Tony Iommi, shall also make his Ozzy solo album debut, which essentially everyone can agree, has been a long time coming. Utilizing his own approach to morality and legacy, the great grandfather of all things metal and malevolent appears eager to whisk us around his hallowed ground yet again.

Review: Ozzy Osbourne remains a rock behemoth. Number 9 is The Prince of Darkness's 11th solo studio album and one that finds the heavy metal singer and former Black Sabbath frontman in fine form after a big performance at the closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in his native Birmingham recently. He has a big team of top collaborators along for the ride such as Jeff Beck, late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and Eric Clapton. It is his second solo album in two years and word is there is a new studio being built at his Grade II listed UK pile so expect much more to come.

Review: The fourth album by OutKast, a transcendental funk fantasia and an unequivocal triumph for Southern rap. Andre "3000" Benjamin and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton, known for their inventive personas and distinct styles, push boundaries in this ambitious release. Emerging from southwest Atlanta, OutKast quickly set trends, evidenced by the Kangol hats in Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. They address identity and location with unparalleled boldness, starting each album with an intro track that proclaims their distinctive Southern voice. Each subsequent album refines their mastery, culminating in Stankonia, where they balanced mass appeal and artistic integrity. Hits like 'So Fresh, So Clean' and 'Ms. Jackson' exemplify this, blending catchy tunes with complex themes becoming household names. Produced mainly by the duo alongside Organized Noize, Stankonia features a sonic collage from influences like Lee Perry and George Clinton. Tracks range from the abrasive 'Gasoline Dreams' to the introspective 'Toilet Tisha,' showcasing their dynamic range. The album is politically conscious yet whimsical, street-savvy yet avant-garde. Over two decades later, Stankonia stands as a revolutionary work, as vibrant and impactful as ever.

Review: It's been a while since we've heard from high-end hip-hop helmers PartyNextDoor and Drake. The two superstars usually work together to make ethereal stopovers on otherwise damn hard rap records, especially by the latter former Young Money megastar. Though the pair have never worked on a full-length album together before, Some Sexy Songs 4 U tots up to the third in an unsaid series of Drake collab albums, following ones between 21 Savage and Future. Dealing in themes of sexual jealousy and ongoing personal feuds - especially amid tumultuous fallouts between the larger private-jet-bound artist and various smaller up-and-comers such as Ice Spice - the record offers a stylistic range on an wide trap smorgasbord, working in Mexican rock samples and alt-rock progressions.

Review: If its predecessor shook up the formula for what a superhero animation could be, Spiderman: Across The Spider Verse blew the game wide open in a dazzling display of shape-shifting visual style, heartfelt narrative and spellbinding action. Daniel Pemberton returned to the project to score the sequel and as he explained to Rolling Stone he followed the versatile approach to animation as a guide for how he composed the music. From archaic medieval bombast to grunge inspired squall on to the synthetic sheen of techno, the soundtrack is as wild a ride as the world-flipping action in the film.

Review: More than half a century after its original release, Pink Floyd At Pompeii: MCMLXXII has returned to cinemas. Shot in 1971 at the haunting amphitheatre ruins of Pompeii, the film captured the band in their pre-DSOTM phase, during which time they were moving away from their originally overt psychedelia and space rock ventures and packing their work with a denser thematic and political verve. The DVD edition represents live versions of 'Echoes' and 'A Saucerful of Secrets', among other ashen, ruinous greats, in newly restored clarity - and that's not to mention its accompanying, behind-the-scenes studio footage of an early DSOTM studio session. This is a full 90-minute cut scanned in 4K from rediscovered 35mm negatives, with Steven Wilson providing a lush new audio mix in Dolby Atmos and 5.1.

Review: This historic 1972 performance film marked a definitive evolution of Pink Floyd's artistic vision, and is possibly the moment they first truly escaped the more ephemeral pop of the Syd Barrett era and started to become the prog giants that would go on to dominate the 70s both culturally and commercially. The haunting imagery of Pompeii combined with an expertly remixed sound design by Steven Wilson turns this film from a mere document of the past into a multi-sensory experience. Meticulously remastered, each note of 'On The Run' and 'Us and Them' hang with crystalline clarity in the surround mix and the shifts between searing intensity and quiet reflectionifrom the thunderous opening of 'Echoes' to the fragility of 'Mademoiselle Nobs' - are rendered in remarkable detail. It's a profound exploration of Pink Floyd's creative process, capturing the band at a pivotal moment as they craft the sonic landscapes that would later define The Dark Side of the Moon. This release ensures that the film's timeless allure is as potent today as it was over fifty years ago, inviting a new generation to experience the alchemy between image, sound and performance.

This expansive double LP, produced by Thomas Dolby, is divided into four thematic movements, blending pop, samba, and Steely Dan-esque sophistication. Tracks like 'Wild Horses', 'We Let the Stars Go', and 'Looking for Atlantis' showcase Paddy McAloon's mastery of both melody and lyrical depth. The album explores wide-ranging themesifrom the myth of Elvis Presley's resurrection to the complexities of love, heartbreak, and spiritual redemption. The Elvis suite is a highlight, filled with symbolic references to his life and legacy. Ending on a redemptive note with 'Doo Wop in Harlem', Jordan takes listeners on a journey through McAloon's introspective world. This vibrant reissue only enhances its legendary status.

Review: Latest from the Elvis Presley reissue/retrospective crock comes Memphis, the first fully comprehensive collection of Elvis Presley's hometown recordings. Yes, the entirety of Memphis was recorded, at one time or another, by the King Of Rock & Roll in the prodigal city sandwiched somewhere between Kentucky and Alabama in the American Midwest. Clocking in at 24 tracks, Memphis captures Presley from his earliest sessions at Sun Studio - which occurred 70 years ago this summer - to American Studio and Stax sessions, his 1974 hometown show and his final recordings in Graceland's Jungle Room.

Review: The Purple One had many different official aliases but in 1995 came one of his best/worst - he was asked to be known by the unpronounceable symbol shown on the album cover of this record. Known amongst fans as the "love symbol" it was credited with this album, The Gold Experience, his impressive seventeenth studio long player overall. The whole record was produced by the legendary singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist himself and as with most of his works it reached the upper end of the Billboard chart. Standouts include the likes of 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the World', 'I Hate U', and 'Gold'. One of many essential albums in his oeuvre.

Review: Dresden producer Purple Disco Machine presents his third studio album Paradise, riffing off his mature and developed passion for the intersection of house and disco. Building on the intense fervour for hits such as 'Hypnotized', 'Fireworks', 'Dopamine' and 'Substitution' comes this new lilac-hued opus. Implicitly nodding at the legacy of pop music's most short lived star, Prince - his ultimately symbolic, purple reign - Purple Disco Machine, as the name suggests, machinates the essence of such a sound in nu-disco form, successfully tributing to the new age of disco and once again sporting a star cast of features

Review: Addison Rae's debut album has been long-awaited by fans and is finally here via Columbia Records and marking the bold step into full-fledged pop stardom many have expected for a while. Featuring previous fan-favourite singles like 'Diet Pepsi,' 'Aquamarine' and 'High Fashion,' the album showcases Rae's evolution from viral sensation to polished pop artist. It was co-written and produced with Luka Kloser and Elvira Anderfjard, and pairs bright, glossy production with playful, high-glam energy that is sure to cut through all summer long from festal stages to car radios. The latest single 'Headphones On' embodies the album's confident tone - it's fun, flirty and unmistakably self-assured. A surprisingly self-aware debut full of chart-ready appeal.

Review: Rag'n'Bone Man, born Rory Charles Graham, is "embracing joy and balance in his life" as he releases his new album What Do You Believe In?. Review: It's vital that the uninitiated understand one thing about 21-year-old Alexander O'Connor - his infectious and well crafted pop tunes are almost destined to bore a hole into your brain and stay there for quite some time. Like Michael Buble meeting Ed Sheeran at someone's Macmillan Coffee Morning. If that sounds even vaguely off-putting then this one clearly isn't aimed at you. But it is aimed at those who appreciate artists that can switch between a kind of Grammar school rap delivery, croonerdom and uptempo boy band business. From the piano and vocal R&B number "Pluto Projector", to the chart-friendly freight train of "Never Had The Balls" and the light acoustic guitar soul effort "Stressed Out", O'Connor's third studio album "Pony" is an incredibly sweet introduction to an artist who's clearly packing plenty of talent.

Review: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, known for their remarkable work with Nine Inch Nails and film scores like The Social Network, deliver a techno-charged soundtrack for Luca Guadagnino's tennis-themed love triangle drama Challengers. The score is a pulsating mix of electroclash, synth-pop, and driving techno, expertly weaving traditional instruments with electronic beats. Reznor and Ross take Guadagnino's vision to heart, crafting a soundtrack that not only drives the narrative but also challenges expectations with its bold, rhythmic energy. Tracks like 'Compress/Repress', co-written with Guadagnino and featuring Reznor's vocals, showcase their ability to blend artistic expression with the film's themes of control and power. Overall, this is a excellent soundtrack that works well to support the visual or just listening to it without having seen the movie.

Review: Rosalia's third album, Motomami, boldly blurs the lines between classical and contemporary music with humor and confidence. Spanning diverse genres like dembow, reggaeton, and electro, Rosalia effortlessly navigates through experimentation while paying homage to her influences. The album's eclectic production and Rosalia's pristine soprano voice shine across tracks like 'Saoko' and 'Candy,' where emotional depth meets musical innovation. MotomamiI's exploration of themes like love, faith, and empowerment showcases Rosalia's evolution as an artist. With references to cultural icons and unexpected collaborations, Rosalia asserts her artistic autonomy and global impact.

Review: Undoubtedly, one of the most influential groups to emerge from the eighties music scene was Run-DMC. With their bold beats and insightful lyrics delivered through a tag-team style among band members, they revolutionized rap music. Their eponymous album stands as a pinnacle not only for the band but also for the entire genre, boasting timeless singles like 'Rock Box' and the global hit 'King Of Rock'. Remarkably, this album was the first rap full-length to attain Gold status, solidifying their impact. Run-DMC continued their momentum with two subsequent albums, further cementing their status as rap icons.

Review: Sade's first album in ten years at the time, 2010's Soldier of Love reaffirmed her unique place in music. In an era dominated by bombastic pop acts, her signature blend of smooth grooves and restrained emotion still stands out today. The album maintains that classic sound while subtly incorporating new elements, like the dub-esque snare crashes on 'Babyfather.' Sade's music, often characterised by its tasteful understatement, captures moods with nuance and precision, such as the haunting piano motif that runs through 'Morning Bird'. With its soothing allure and timeless appeal, Sade once again proves why she remains unparalleled in her craft.

Review: Stronger Than Pride marks a subtle shift in Sade's sound, emphasizing a more stripped-down, meditative approach to romance and introspection. Recorded after a hiatus, the album exudes a breezy, unhurried vibe, with compositions that loop back on themselves and melodies that leisurely unfurl. While not as minimalistic as later efforts, the album showcases softer rhythms and lighter melodies, allowing Sade's airy vocals to shine. Songs like 'Love Is Stronger Than Pride' and 'Turn My Back on You' capture emotional honesty and candor, buoyed by sparse arrangements that enhance Sade's directness. Throughout the record, Sade's writing maintains a mantra-like quality, repeating phrases to imbue the songs with quiet anguish and introspection. Leroy Osbourne's background vocals add warmth to Sade's cool melodies, enhancing the emotional resonance of tracks like 'Paradise' and 'Nothing Can Come Between Us.' The band's cohesion and faith in each other are evident on Stronger Than Pride, with each member contributing to flesh out Sade's ideas or provide space for them to bloom. While lacking the glitz and melodrama of previous hits, the album's emotional clarity and restrained production make it a compelling addition to Sade's discography, showcasing their ability to evolve while staying true to their signature sound.

Review: Sade's debut album Diamond Life (1984) introduced a distinctive blend of minimalistic soul and jazz-infused pop, contrasting sharply with the synth-heavy trends of its time. Lead vocalist Sade Adu's modest contralto and understated elegance enchanted listeners, earning comparisons to legends like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. The album's standout track, 'Smooth Operator,' showed the band's penchant for crafting sophisticated, emotionally resonant music amidst a backdrop of serene instrumentation. Diamond Life navigates themes of love, commitment, and everyday struggles with an understated grace, epitomized by tracks like 'Hang On to Your Love' and 'Your Love Is King.' Sade's ability to convey depth and desire with concise lyricism and atmospheric melodies set her apart as a master storyteller in the realm of blues-infused pop. The album's subdued tones and atmospheric production create a stunning sonic landscape that remains impactful. Diamond Life made Sade a household name as a pioneering figure in minimalist soul, setting the stage for her illustrious career and leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.

Review: Promise solidified Sade's signature sound with lush, unhurried compositions that blended jazz, Brazilian pop, and soul. Building on the success of their debut, Diamond Life, this album established Sade as masters of mood music, transporting listeners with their sophisticated arrangements and Sade Adu's soft-touch vocals. The lead single, 'The Sweetest Taboo,' epitomizes the album's accessibility, with its infectious midtempo groove and breathy vocals. However, it's the opener, 'Is It a Crime,' that steals the spotlight, showcasing Sweetback's (the trio behind Sade) talents with Hammond organs and djembes, while Adu's vocals soar over big band-style crescendos. Throughout Promise, Sade explores the varied stages of love and relationships, with Adu's autobiographical lyrics conveying melancholy and introspection. Tracks like 'War of the Hearts' and Jezebel' delve into the complexities of human emotion, while 'Tar Baby' addresses themes of racial identity and unexpected pregnancy with sensitivity and depth. With each track, the band reaffirms their commitment to crafting music that moves and transports listeners - an approach that continues to resonate with audiences today.

Review: Sade's Lovers Rock marks a significant evolution in the band's sound and image. Departing from their signature luxuriance, the album embraces a sparser, knottier sound that beautifully balances past influences with contemporary trends. Adu's vocals, thick and low as ever, blend seamlessly into the breezy landscape of acoustic guitar, reggae bass, and simple percussion, creating an atmosphere of understated sensuality. The album's themes range from new love to motherhood to societal issues, showcasing Adu's lyrical prowess and her ability to navigate the complexities of human emotions. Lovers Rock also pays homage to the cultural influence of Caribbean Britishness, both in its title and its musical style, adding depth to Sade's sonic palette. While the album was released amid a pop landscape dominated by shiny, slick productions, Sade remained true to their sound, avoiding obvious trends and opting for a more introspective approach. The album's impact reverberates through contemporary music and allowed Sade to maintain their unique identity and continue evolving with each release.

Review: It's the anime that changed the format forever, from storytelling to character design - Neon Genesis Evangelion is still, to this day, one of the most beloved, divisive and iconic animated series of all time. From influencing 'Madoka Magicka', 'Serial Experiments Lain' or 'Kill La Kill' to its resurgence in popularity thanks to social media and the infinite memes that the show continues to spawn off almost 30 years later. Many will know 'Cruel Angels Thesis' and the bossa nova cover of 'Fly Me to the Moon' performed by J-Pop singer Yoko Takahashi, which are used as the intro and credit sequence songs, but don't neglect the electrifying orchestral composition from Shiro SAGISU that backsets the action sequences. This is the first time the full OST is pressed on vinyl. It comes in a beautiful gatefold featuring frames from the show inside, housed on black and blue vinyl to reflect the colour palette of this hugely influential show.

Review: Santana's Supernatural, turning 25, remains a landmark album despite its time-stamped sound. Released on blue vinyl, this Grammy-winning 1999 record catapulted Santana back into mainstream fame. The album's success is anchored by the ubiquitous hit 'Smooth' featuring Rob Thomas, whose infectious Latin rock groove still resonates. Tracks like 'Corazon Espinado' with Mana, and 'Migra' retain the classic Santana flair, blending Latin rhythms with rock elements. However, many guest-heavy tracks, such as 'Maria Maria' produced by Wyclef, feel more like a pop compilation than a cohesive album. While Supernatural may not be a favorite for fans of Santana's experimental 70s work, its commercial triumph allowed Carlos Santana the freedom to explore new musical territories in subsequent projects. This duality of artistic compromise and subsequent liberation makes Supernatural a pivotal album in Santana's illustrious career. One of the most successful albums of the past 25 years, this album is enjoyable regardless of what genre or style of music you like.

Review: This release marks the first offical vinyl outing for Gustavo Santaolalla and Mac Quayle's soundtrack. It is the highly anticipated 2020 sequel, The Last Of Us Part II and features stunning new artwork by Tula Lotay and liner notes by Co-Writer and Director Neil Druckmann. Musically it is a striking and emotive listen that takes in moments of bass heavy impending doom next to gentler tracks of acoustic guitar that soundtrack tearful moments. The dual narratives of revenge and differing perspectives of the game all shine through in beautiful fashion.

Review: Following on from the tragic Astroworld Festival crush of November 5, 2021, in which ten people lost their lives, it was always going to be a difficult rollout for the next full-length from hip-hop megastar Travis Scott. With any potential onus or responsibility placed on Scott being removed by a grand jury earlier this year, focus has since been re-directed to the highly anticipated Utopia; serving as the long awaited follow up to 2018's critically acclaimed Astroworld and 2019's JackBoys collaborative compilation with Cactus Jack. Clocking in at a beastly hour and 13 minutes and boasting a ludicrous array of guest features and producers including the likes of Drake, Playboi Carti, Beyonce, The Weeknd, Dave Chappelle, Young Thug, Kid Cudi, James Blake, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), The Alchemist and Metro Boomin, the LP serves as yet another epic portrayal of why the MC continues to be heralded as one of the most forward thinking, single-minded and creative forces within the realms of modern hip-hop and trap.

Review: After the fatal crush of 2021's Astroworld Festival, which caused the death of ten people and saw several hospital admissions, any anticipation for trap giant Travis Scott's next album was always going to be mired in controversy. Acquitted of all blame in July of this year, attention has since turned to the much-anticipated Utopia; which serves as both the follow up to 2018's masterwork Astroworld as well as the 2019 JackBoys collaborative compilation with Cactus Jack. Arriving on the heels of the experimental anthology film Circus Maximus (featuring shorts directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, Harmony Korrine and Gaspar Noe), with a gargantuan 73 minute runtime and boasting a who's who of features from some of today's most vital artists and producers, including the likes of Playboi Carti, Beyonce, Drake, The Weeknd, Dave Chappelle, Yung Lean, SZA, Kid Cudi, James Blake, The Alchemist and Metro Boomin, the LP offers up yet another markedly impressive sonic display of why Scott (all controversies aside) continues to be heralded as one of the most progressive, single-minded and unique forces within the realms of modern hip-hop.
