Review: A veritable time capsule of a bygone era that now seems enviably innocent - fallout of Thatcherite politics, economic crises, and wars in the Middle East aside. Perhaps not too dissimilar from today, then, irrespective of your personal feelings towards Happy Mondays the baggy Mancunian swagger-ers did contribute one of the most distinctive voices to the Madchester and indie-acid crossover era, and one that oozed an air of disassociation from mainstream politics of the day. Adding to the sense of this being a period piece, Balearic Beats comprises four remixes of Ryder et al's original work, three of which from one of the leading figures in the dominant narrative about house music arriving in the UK - Paul Oakenfold. The tracks are low-slung, hypnotic, and have an atmosphere that's as thick as the air on a Mediterranean evening.

Review: UK electronic innovators Orbital have been revisiting their early roots with Orbital LEDs, a limited-edition series remastering their old greats. Now fully remastered and paired with striking new artwork by Julian House, the latest drop highlights the duo's groundbreaking early sound when tracks like 'Midnight' innovated with a blend of hypnotic house rhythms and minimalist influences from Philip Glass and Wim Mertens. Also included here is 'Choice' which stands out for its anarcho-punk edge and bold vocal sampling. Paul Hartnoll has often said he aimed to inject house music with a sense of rebellion and social commentary and these reissues reaffirm Orbital's ability to do that while pushing boundaries from the start.

Review: UK rave pioneers Orbital are revisiting their early 'Brown Album' EPs with the launch of a new and ongoing Orbital LEDs ('Limited Edition Drops') series. These 12"s are being re-issued with newly commissioned artwork by Intro. This one was originally released in September 1992 and is one of the group's most famous because it contains their most iconic track 'Halcyon' which blurs ethereal vocals with hypnotic breaks that define 90s dance music and still get huge reactions to this day. The EP also includes 'The Naked and the Dead' which is a darker techno track, plus 'Sunday' and the previously unreleased dub version of 'The Naked and The Dub.' Essential.

Lush (3-5 CJ Bolland remix) (6:16)
Review: A cornerstone of early 90s electronic music, Orbital's Lush resurfaces with renewed energy through the Orbital LEDs reissue campaign. Originally released in 1993, the EP is a masterclass in melodic techno, featuring the iconic 'Lush 3-1' and 'Lush 3-2', two seamlessly interwoven tracks that exemplify the Hartnoll brothers' knack for crafting emotionally resonant, rhythmically complex soundscapes. Reissued on 12" with striking new artwork by Intro, this edition includes heavyweight remixes by Underworld and CJ Bolland, whose reworks push the tracks deeper into the club stratosphere. Underworld brings a dense, propulsive momentum, while Bolland injects a sleek, hard-edged urgency. Yet it's Orbital's originals that remain the centerpiece. Those epic gliding arpeggios, layered synths and rolling percussion conjure both introspection and euphoria. A vital part of their Brown Album, Lush helped define the progressive techno movement, influencing generations of producers. Three decades on, the tracks still pulse with a timeless vibrancy.

Review: Second time around for eccentric Sheffield trio The All Seeing I's sole full-length excursion, 1999's Pickled Eggs & Sherbert, which here lands on vinyl for the first time. The album, a celebration of Steel City creativity featuring cameos from Cocker, Tony Christie, Babybird and the Human League's Phil Oakey, is best remembered for hit singles 'The Beat Goes On', 'Walk Like a Panther' - lyrics reportedly penned by Jarvis Cocker - and 'The First Man in Space', but there are plenty more highlights amongst the unique blends of fractured dancehall rhythms, redlined electronica, oddball easy listening references, experimental d&b rhythms and genuine leftfield pop nous. For proof, check out blissful acapella number 'No Return' (where Lisa Millett plays a starring role), the breathless, bass-heavy house of 'Sweet Music', the weighty madness of 'I Walk' and the exotica-goes-big beat flex of 'Happy Birthday Nicola'.

Review: Not to be confused with the sweet dessert made from milk, cream and sugar, thickened via rice flour, gelatine, or Irish moss. To us, Blancmange refers to the English synth pop outfit formed in London circa 1979. Over seven years, Neil Arthur and Stephen Luscombe gave us a lot of incredible music, before calling time in 1986, only to return in the late-2000s eventually putting out a fourth album, Blanc Burn, in 2011. For the most part, Everything Is Connected celebrates their most fertile period through ten quality tracks (more are included on CD and DL versions), although technically what's here does span a 45 year period. Curated by Arthur, UK top ten singles 'Living On The Ceiling', 'Blind Vision' and 'Don't Tell Me' are here, but so too are some of their more overlooked gems.

Review: Surely one of the most iconic of all the British funk bands of the 90s, The Brand New Heavies split the difference between the heads-down seriousness of the rare groove scene with a sharp pop instinct which found them great success. This best of collection gives you hit after hit, and as soon as the irresistible groove of 'Never Stop' kicks in you'll be taken right back to that era. There's a house sensibility to some of the tunes which speaks to their proximity to Soul II Soul, but this is a funk band first and foremost, and their dynamic flow as a group is what resulted in such evergreen hits as 'Shelter' and 'Apparently Nothing'.

Review: Synthpop trio Bronski Beat's 1984 debut The Age of Consent is a rarity in musical history; it both defined a generation and challenged the status quo. 40 years later and The Age Of Consent remains as prescient and vital as ever as it did on its original release; transgressive, defiant, queer, and laden with hooks. To celebrate its anniversary, London Records revisit the album across a series of formats, uncovering sonic archival gems, new mixes and more. This new edition technically contains two LPs: The Age Of Consent and Hundreds & Thousands, with five bonus tracks for each, plus remixes from Absolute., Planningtorock, The Knocks, Dave Aude, Tall Paul, and Superchumbo. Also coming with a detailed insert doubling up as a timeline by project consultant Barnaby Ashton-Bullock, this is the definitive retrospective product for anyone looking to complete their Bronski Beat collection (as best they can, anyway, for the love'll probably never end...).

Review: The Durutti Column prove just how fertile the North West England music scene was during the mid-late-1970s and through the 1980s. Taking their name from an anarchist military movement active during the Spanish Civil War, the band was formed by Vini Reilly, who brought together a bunch of players from the nascent punk and post punk scene, and managed to turn heads in the process. One of which was Tony Wilson. One of the first acts to sign to his now-legendary Factory Records, they would remain on the imprint until its demise, by which time the project had become a solo thing for Reilly, whose name was already shorthand for risk taking with bold ideas. Take this record, for example, veering from Southern Mediterranean folk to experimental indie, sample-based rock-opera and more, it still defies expectations.

Review: Echo & The Bunnymen's What Are You Going to Do with Your Life?, their eighth studio album, reflects a more introspective and matured sound from the post-punk icons. Released in 1999, this album marked a departure from their earlier work's grandiose, bass-driven rock, offering a gentler, acoustic-driven atmosphere. Tracks like the title song and 'Rust' highlight Ian McCulloch's soulful vocals, with lush string arrangements and a restrained yet heartfelt delivery. The addition of horn accents on 'Get in the Car' and 'When It Blows Over' brings unexpected warmth, while 'History Chimes' closes the album on a melancholic piano note. The album showcases a thoughtful evolution of their signature sound, offering a reflective soundtrack for both longtime fans and new listeners. This album demonstrates a band comfortable in its musical maturity, resonating with the contemplative themes of aging and legacy.

Review: Echo & The Bunnymen came back with renewed vigour when they reformed in 1997 and recorded Evergreen. The album was headed up by 'Nothing Lasts Forever', which lodged in the UK's musical psyche as the Britpop wave receded and everyone was craving a little more maturity in their indie bands. 25 years on, the album ranks as of the band's finest, as vital to their story as the classic 80s records, and it's a welcome treat to see it pressed up once again, on fetching white vinyl with a yolky centre, no less.

Review: London never really came close to matchign Manchester in the baggy stakes, but Flowered Up's album A Life With Brian and its unique fusion of indie rock, dance, and psychedelic influences, is as close as it got. Originally released in 1991 and now reissued on limited orange vinyl, the classic 90s record is a vibrant exploration of youth culture and urban life in London with infectious grooves, catchy hooks, and anthemic choruses all present and correct and ready to deliver a dynamic and energetic listen. The album's title track stands out as a definitive highlight with its distinctive sound and lyrical depth, but really all of these tunes offer a nostalgic journey back to the early 90s and celebrates Flowered Up's enduring legacy.

Review: Goldie's timeless remains a drum & bass benchmark, but also one of the most seminal albums in all of electronic music. The man behind it celebrated its anniversary last year with various different projects and now follows that up by handpicking a selection of remixes to take his most treasured material. There is a mix of old school dons and new school talents from all over the world here, each adding their own unique spin. Searchlight, aka Irish drum and bass producers ZeroT and Beta2, are signed exclusively to Goldie's Fallen Tree 1Hundred label and bring some lush jazz and broken beats to 'State of Mind' and later 'Sensual' while Metalheadz tastemaker J Kenzo brings dark, minimalistic and tribal sound to his Tribute remix of 'Jah'. These are just some of the many standouts.

Review: There is no more iconic figure in the world of drum & bass than Goldie. In fact, he has pretty much transitioned to natural treasure in the years since he operated at the genre's bleeding edge as a DJ, label boss of Metalheadz and producer. His Timeless album, now a hard to believe quarter of a century old, was his big breakthrough and took d&b into new realms. The epic title track will always be the benchmark by which all others are judged by the whole flow the record, precision beat work and lush synth sounds have rarely been bettered.

Review: Northside courted controversy in more ways than one. Emerging from North Manchester in 1989, cynics were quick to point out their glaring sonic similarities to other Manchester groups, not least The Stone Roses, while the BBC, among others, moved even faster to ban lead single 'Shall We Take A Trip' due to its copious drug references, especially LSD. Nevertheless, the music itself was of a high standard, if led by others, and that quality meant the lead track broke into the Top 50 singles chart despite its lack of radio play. Produced by Ian Broudie, the album would produce one more track that made a chart impact - 'My Rising Star', which reached 32 and stayed in the league table for seven weeks - while as an LP the package peaked at number 19. Victims of circumstances, a follow up record was planned but the collapse of Factory Records in 1992 put an end to that, with the group disbanding shortly after.

Review: Originally released in 1993, seminal UK duo Orbital's Brown Album marked a bold leap forward in emotional depth and sonic ambition for electronic music. Tracks like 'Halcyon + On + On,' 'Impact (The Earth Is Burning)' and 'Lush 3-1/3-2' showcase the duo's masterful blend of driving rhythms and lush melodic textures. It was hailed as an instant classic at the time and made Mixmag's Best Dance Albums of All Time list. It has endured well over the last 30 years and is now reissued on vinyl for the first time in a decade, with a half-speed remaster and new liner notes by Andrew Harrison.

Review: Although their debut single 'Chime' hit the UK top 20, it's the duo's iconic second album in 1993 that marks the moment when the Hartnoll brothers transcended the UK rave underground and became bona fide electronic superstars. This faithful reissue brings back a record that didn't just capture the spirit of the time i it helped shape it. The Brown Album takes Orbital's sound to a new level of sophistication and emotional depth. Tracks like 'Halcyon + On + On' are serene, dreamlike soundscapes that remain some of the most beautiful in electronic music history. Meanwhile, 'Lush 3-1' builds and blossoms with hypnotic layers, a masterclass in dynamic progression, a perfect balance between transcendence and tension. 'Remind' and 'Impact (The Earth Is Burning)' are pulsing techno beasts that dip and drive, blending rave intensity with atmospheric richness. Each track flows into the next with seamless ease, crafting a journey that feels both epic and intimate. The Brown Album isn't just a milestone in Orbital's career i it's a timeless work that continues to influence electronic music today. Essential listening for anyone who wants to understand the genre's evolution.

Review: Orbital remain titans of the global electronic scene which is no doubt why their self-titled album from 1991 now gets mastered and reissued for this year's Record Store Day. A pioneering work in electronic music, this landmark debut is a rich world of driving drums, hypnotic melodies, and intricate soundscapes. From the propulsive energy of the seminal 'Chime' to the dreamy ambience of 'Belfast,' each track showcases the duo's mastery of rhythm and texture. Orbital's use of innovative sampling techniques and atmospheric synths creates a distinct sonic universe that still stands them apart and helps make this a timeless classic that has influenced generations of electronic artists ever since.

Review: After the 30 Something retrospective that landed during 2022, comes a new Orbital album proper, Optical Delusion, set to be accompanied by a busy summer of gig and festival dates by the looks of it. The album's taster single 'Dirty Rat' was a corker, too, full of post-Brexit/Boris bile and a biting vocal from Sleaford Mods frontman Jason Williamson, not to mention some striking Orbital musical trademarks. It could well point the way forward for more interesting collaborations - perhaps taking a leaf out of Leftfield's book - on the album, though only time will tell. Either way, a serious portion of new material from one of the dance world's most enduring and best loved acts will be feverishly anticipated.

Review: Early 1990s classic The Green Album features iconic Orbital tracks like their breakthrough single 'Chime' and the legendary comedown tune 'Belfast.' After the success of 'Chime,' Pete Tong signed Orbital to London/FFRR Records and granted them the creative freedom to craft an album beyond the typical rave formula. Influenced by Kraftwerk and Cabaret Voltaire, the Hartnoll brothers came through and then some as they aimed to create a fully immersive and innovative album full of ambition which helped the duo become pioneers in electronic music, influencing artists from Bjork to Bicep and collaborating with figures like Madonna and Kraftwerk. Their second self-titled album solidified their visionary status, while their groundbreaking live performances are also by now the stuff of legend.

Review: The Redskins released just one studio album, their well received debut Neither Washington Nor Moscow in 1986. It came on London Records and now for the very first time since the first time, it reappears on vinyl and CD with new sleeve notes by bassist Martin Hewes. The album came just two years after the band formed but already their soulful songs were packed with passion and political undertones as a result of the band all being members of the Socialist Workers Party. Highlights include 'Bring It Down! (This Insane Thing)' which was the band's only Top 40 hit. The band split the same year this was rebased.

Review: A significant return to the core of Goldie's pioneering drum & bass project, here in collaboration with Bournemouth beatsmith Submotive. Since the early 90s, Rufige Kru have ve redefined breakbeat science, with Goldie's early tracks like 'Darkrider' and 'Terminator' laying the foundation for modern drum & bass. Now, over a decade since their last release, the duo's chemistry is palpable, revisiting their roots while steering the genre forward. The opening track, 'Alpha Omega', sets the tone with intricate beats and emotional intensity, while 'Goldikus' (feat. Cleveland Watkiss) layers jazz influence with expansive soundscapes. 'Still The Same' (feat. Casisdead) blends grimy vocals with atmospheric pads, reaffirming their connection to the genre's experimental edge. With tracks like 'Mercury' and 'The Guardianz', the album remains rooted in the soulful, deep bass culture Goldie helped create. A fresh chapter in the legendary Rufige Kru legacy.

Review: Rufige Kru, the legendary alias of Goldie, has long been a cornerstone of breakbeat enervation and innovation. First tizzwozzing dancefloors in 1992 with the hardcore classic 'Darkrider', Rufige Kru delivered pivotal tracks like 'Ghosts of My Life' and 'Terminator'. Now, for the first time since 2009, Rufige Kru returns with new LP Alpha Omega, featuring longtime collaborator and krumate Submotive. Leading the charge is 'Still The Same', a heavyweight single featuring CASISDEAD, fresh off his BRIT Award win, interceded by 'Goldikus' with Cleveland Watkiss, a chance early jazzstep pioneer from the far-flung realm of piano jazz and soul.

Review: Utah Saints, the debut album from the British electronic duo, was originally released in the U.S., followed by a UK release in 1993. This album played a pivotal role in establishing the band as household names in the burgeoning techno scene, reaching number ten on the UK Albums Chart. The singles 'Something Good', 'I Want You' and 'What Can You Do for Me' showed the band's crossover appeal, with 'Something Good becoming a staple on college radio in America. A standout on the album, 'Something Good', prominently samples Kate Bush's 'Cloudbusting', lending it a nostalgic yet fresh vibe. Released as a single in May 1992, it soared to number four on the UK Singles Chart and captured attention on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart as well. The song also gained prominence during the BBC's coverage of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. The album is full of great techno and dance music. This vinyl reissue features striking new artwork that beautifully balances modern aesthetics with a classic feel, ensuring it appeals to both new listeners and longtime fans. Utah Saints remains a defining work of its time, reflecting the innovative spirit of early 90s electronic music.
