Satisfaction
Cat: SATISFACTION. Rel: 17 Nov 22
Carl Dawkins - "Satisfaction" (1:43)
JJ All Stars - "Poppy Cock" (1:50)
Review: Carl Dawkins played a big role in the evolution of reggae throughout the sixties and seventies on all the key labels for Trojan Records to JJ Records. He worked regularly with JJ All Stars, a Jamaican reggae backing bad who were active during the same decades. This reissue takes it all the way back to 1970. 'Satisfaction' is a still fresh cut with swaggering drums and earthy guitars and the vocals of Dawkins drifting up top like a lone cloud on a warm day. The flip is an instrumental in true JJ All Stars fashion that has dreamy melodies and the lazy rhythms sinking you in deep.

I Can't Turn You Loose (2:49)
Review: This new tune on the crucial Original Gravity label finds Donnoya Drake covering the classic Shirelles joint 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow.' She re-sings the vocal in her own way, adding extra soul and spice, while the reggae rhythms swagger down low with plenty of drum fills and undulating guitar riffs. On the flip, Junior Dell & The D-Lites offer up 'I Can't Turn You Loose' which is a classic reggae sound with big horns energy and fat bottomed low ends all sweeping you up inna lovely rhythm that never lets up. Another 7"s of gold from this label.

Live Wire (Take One)
Cat: TIEU 025. Rel: 23 Feb 21
The Gladiators & Tommy McCook & The Supersonics - "Live Wire (Take One)" (2:08)
Justin Hinds & Tommy McCook & The Supersonics - "Rub Up Push Up" (2:46)
Review: Duke Records' latest trawl through the vaults of Arthur 'Duke' Reid delivers another pair of gems featuring the legendary Jamaican producer's equally lauded backing band, Tommy McCook and the Supersonics. Side A's 'Live Wire (Take 1)' is - as the name suggests - the first recording of The Gladiators' 1968 single. It's a great cut all told, with glistening guitar motifs and the group's harmonic vocals dominating the mix more than the typically weighty groove. Turn to the flip for an earlier number voiced by Justin Hinds, 1965's 'Rub Up Push Up'. This is a leap-along ska number with McCook sneaking a few solos into the jaunty and energetic backing track while Hinds and uncredited backing singers belt out some strong vocals.

Derrick Harriott & The Tamlins & Joy White & Reasons & U-Brown - "Christmas Songbook" (11:27)
The Chariot Riders - "Christmas Songbook" (instrumental dub Style) (11:32)
Review: Lifelong reggae fans, vinyl lovers and frequent Juno readers will be familiar with Crystal D's Reggae Disco mix series. It was a 70s thing where artists served up their own unique reggae versions of Christmas classics and now we get volume 17 of the Christmas Songbook. This one comes on 12" in hand-stamped sleeve and the A-side is an 11+ minute collection of tunes from Derrick Harriott & The Tamlins & Joy White & Reasons & U-Brown with natty chords, sleigh bells and choral reggae vocals. What a mix. In authentic reggae fashion, the flip side is a dub of the whole lot by The Chariot Riders.

Rebel (3:32)
Review: Belgium's Roots Vibration continue to do good work and now look to Winston Jarrett (the Jamaican reggae singer who was part of Alton Ellis' group The Flames in the 1960s) for another re-issue that is well worthy of your attention. This is heavy hitting roots rarity produced by Dillinger in 1983, and here Jarrett is in fine form as he muses on self empowerment. The bass cuts deep and the tropical synths bring the sunshine into this most carefree groover. Flip over for "Rebel", all lit up with slick effects and a tinkling piano line that tugs at the heart strings.

Jay Z - "Bam" (feat Damian Marley) (4:00)
Foxy Brown - "Oh Yeah" (Featuring Spragga Benz) (4:12)
Review: The first volume in the Lickshot series serves up two almighty slabs of reggae and dancehall-influenced hip-hop from two of the biggest names in the game. On side A you'll find an edited version of Jay-Z's "Bam" from 2017 album "4:44", where the long-serving rapper trades verses with Damian Marley over a sparse beat and sampled reggae horns. Over on the flip dancehall vocalist Spragga Benz guests on Foxy Brown"Oh Yeah", a hybrid hip-hop/ragga workout . Like its' A-side companion, it's a weighty, club-ready rocker that should be in every hip-hop head's collection.

Jean & Trevor - "Back Together" (6:37)
IMF Players - "Dub Again" (6:35)
Review: It's back to 1988 as Athens Of The North reissues the impossibly good "Back Together Again" from Jean & Trevor, a golden lovers rock classic that is actually a cover version of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway's original. It's a gorgeously hazy cut with some pretty advanced-at-the-time synths and effects on top of an organic rhythm section and sliding guitar work. IMF Players then offer up "Dub Again" on the flip which delves deeper into dub science with equally compelling results.

Why Love One Another (2:43)
West Board Jungle (2:01)
Review: This double single 7" features two very rare and desirable reggae tracks. On the A-side there is 'Why? Love One Another' by Jamaican musician, recording engineer and record producer Jeffrey (Geoffrey Chung), originally recorded in 1969. The second side is from 1970 by Paul Madden titled 'West Board Jungle'. When a label puts two super rare tracks from different artists onto one record, everyone wins - including our bank accounts.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface mark on the record, but otherwise in excellent condition***

Original Gravity label maestro Neil Anderson loves to cover a broad array of sounds and has recently turned his hand to tunes by Oasis and Stereophonics. He here focusses on Madchester legends Happy Mondays and their superb 'Step On' under his Junior Dell & The D-Lites alias, while a Jamaican singer provides backing. It still has all the melon-twisting magic of the original but with some hefty reggae rhythms down low. On the reverse is 'Meanwhile On The 15th Floor' which is a fat-bottomed reggae instrumental original that rides on a nice 60s Kingston rocksteady vibe with a twelve-bar blues melody.

In A While Crocodile (3:27)
Review: Junior Dell & The Delights are back with a mighty fine new single that comes imbued with plenty of proper good old school ska and reggae values. It's an upbeat rhythm that will get you on your toes with its energetic horns and riffs, swaggering drums and superb vocal work. On the flip of this limited 7" is, of course, 'In A While Crocodile'. It's a continuation of the a-side with just as much swagger and energy. Both tunes are essential and mark another fine drop from this great modern day outfit.

Hold The Riddim (3:50)
Review: There's no information out there about Junior Dell & The D Lites, but Original Gravity have been working hard to bring their classic ska sound to life. 'Whole Lotta Skankin' Goin' On' is an infectious bouncer with that insistent offbeat rhythm which set monumental wheels in motion in Jamaican music. There's even a sweet organ solo to boot on this guaranteed sound clash winner. 'Hold The Riddim' is no slouch either, bringing all the passion and energy of the dance to you in short, sharp, reload-ready fashion.

Twenty Flight Ska (3:01)
Orange Street Breakdown (2:48)
Review: This one seems to get reissued every year, and for good reason: it's a mighty fine 7" from London reggae legends Junior Dell & The D-Lites, who are staples of the Original Gravity label and known for their expertise in vintage sounds. Many of their finest tracks have been reissued over the years and 'Twenty Flight Ska' is as worthy as any. It delivers a raw sound with punchy ska horns, smooth rhythms, and deep rolling bass. On the flip side, 'Orange Street Breakdown' takes a more laid-back approach while radiating warmth with its relaxed groove and sun-drenched melodies. Both tracks capture the beautiful essence of classic ska and reggae.
