This album's title refers to a symbol of destruction and renewal, which appears appropriate for what is a considerable departure for the velvet-tonsilled singer-songwriter Lamontagne. Having set his stall out with several albums of Van Morrison-tinged folk-pop that found its way easily onto end-credit sequences and the like, he's shown a desire to stretch out and experiment, and this nocturnal opus, aided and abetted by all of My Morning Jacket, is a leap into sleepily expansive psychedelic - as reminiscent of mid-'70s Pink Floyd as the bucolic realm he normally inhabits, Yet it marks more than a mere reinvention, being a luminous gem in its own right.
