Review: Coming back with a vengeance, The Brand New Heavies are releasing a classic double vinyl 12" of their new single "I Don't Know Why (I Love You)" from their new album "Get Used To It" on Delicious Vinyl. The awesome Heavies version of the Stevie Wonder cover gets multiple remixes from an all-star lineup of mixologists. Outta the box, 4Hero crew from the UK deliver two signature funk jazz classics, the "Electric Soul mix" will keep your head knocking and the "Folk Soul mix" will send your head on a trip into new sounds and textures that have become 4Hero's speciality. Flip over record one and you have the king of house music, Kenny Dope delivering the goods as only he can. His main and dub versions put a pumping house twist on N'Dea's classic soulful delivery. Cool chords and dynamic beats make this another classic Heavies remix by the dopest one. But wait, there's more! On wax number two, the king and pioneer of remixing, Tom Moulton steps up and delivers a hot buttered soul remix of the album version. Coupled with an instrumental and acappella, Moulton's mix brings out every nuance of the Heavies funky live playing. Sounds like the record came right off the Stax assembly line. Finally, last but definitely not least, DJ Spinna takes his swing with a double dose of Heavies soul. Not only does he deliver a stellar beat heavy rendition of "I Don't Know Why" but adds an additional remix of "Sex God" featuring Phonte from Little Brother! The additional track is only available on this 12", and takes the sultry song to new levels of sexy soul bliss.

Review: 'Everytime' is the first single off the new album by Lisa Decker and Nautilus. It came about after the label head wondered how Lisa's songs would sound if Japanese jazz trio Nautilus arranged some of them. They have, and here are the results, a very personal new single off a great new album. 'Everytime' is tieless funk with a super sweet and innocent vocal over crisp drums. On the flip is a remix that takes it in new directions with Pat Van Dyke, a longtime known producer and multi-instrumentalist from New Jersey, at the helm. He brings good time horn led sounds with a guest appearance by Brooklyn based lyricist John Robinson.

Review: Kiss Klassics have been producing some high-quality promo double singles for a while now, this double headliner of Nelly and Fat Joe being the eighth instalment in their archival series. Side A was the runaway standout from New York rap legend Fat Joe's 2001 titanic-sized album 'Jealous Ones Still Envy (J.O.S.E.)', 'Whats Luv' with the one and only Ashanti. This marked Ashanti's debut year as an artist, the Tina Turner sample hook becoming the soundtrack of the block party and becoming one of the biggest songs of 2002. Side B needs no introduction. "It's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes". No matter what you think of Nelly, 'Hot in Herre' continues to have the world in a chokehold over 20 years later.

Review: Cold Busted has long been setting the standard for hip hop and instrumental goodness. As well as serving up the latest in their Jet Set series this month, they also invite Belgian beatmaker and fine sonic journeyman Sim Nagai to make an entry into the same much-loved series. 'In Rotation' opens with funky drumming and pitch-shifted guitar licks before Latin flavours wash over 'Cuban Delirium,' a deeper beat with reverential pianos. There is a pure beachside bliss to 'Palm Dreams' with its tumbling drums and hits and languid vocal samples and 'Copacabana Sand' completes the trip with a nice shuffling beat and some gorgeous acoustic string work.

Review: US rap royalty Nas's 'Ultra Black' features producer Hit-Boy and was released in mid-summer 2020 as the lead single from his thirteenth album, King's Disease. Lyrically, Nas pays homage to all things Black as he draws on his black heritage and African-American culture while the beats remain deeply laidback with jazzy chords up top. In an interview at the time with NME, the rapper said the song "represents love" although some interpreted the lyrics as a diss towards singer and rapper Doja Cat. This 7" features the vocal version and an instrumental.

Review: Game-changing US MC Nas dropped his 'Rare' back in 2021. It has indeed since become a classic and rather rare and so now it now gets reissued on white 7" with an instrumental on the flip. It was produced by Hit-Boy and was the first single to be released from his Grammyr-nominated fourteenth studio album, King's Disease II. A printed sheet includes the lyrics and features the raw boom-bap drums that had always underpinned his sound with dark soul melodies and textbook bars from the legend himself.

Review: Some fans argue that "It Ain't Hard To Tell" is the best production on Nas' legendary "Illmatic" album. Large Professor certainly did his job in making it pop: the beat is killer, and the whole thing is driven by a Michael Jackson sample of "Human Nature". As if that weren't enough, samples from Stanley Clarke and Mountain are layered in to perfection and the smooth, sweet rolling beat draws you in over and over and Nas' creamy delivery finishes it in style. Flip over for the instrumental and bask in the glow of it all. Classic.

A whole bunch of Nas singles are being reissued on 7" courtesy of Mass Appeal at the moment, and each one is as essential now as it was when it first arrived. This one is slightly different as 'Life is like a Dice Game' was a demo and one of the firm fan favourites from the legendary New York mic man, taken from his undeniably best period - the Illmatic era. Now 30 years old, it gets revisited and completed properly with Freddie Gibbs and Cordae, who were 11 years old and not born when the track was initially recorded in 1993. The unfinished original version leaked in 1995 so to finally have it officially completed is epic.

Review: 'One Love', here reissued by DRP, is a classic track that first appeared on the NYC rapper Nas' first album Illmatic, as its final track. With an all-encompassingly raucous boom-bap backing whipped up by Mister Mushi and its namesake drawn from the Bob Marley song, the song is composed as a string of letters written by Nas to his incarcerated friends, including fellow rapper Cormega, who went down in the early 90s - musing on personal loyalties and disloyalties.

Review: For a while now, DJ Djar-One's Beats House imprint has specialized in limited, blink-and-you-miss-it singles laden with re-edits and mash ups. The imprint's latest missive conforms to the formula, with Djar-One and Kesta offering up remixes of two classic hip-hop cuts on a seven-inch of which only 200 copies have been pressed. Djar-One handles Side A, offering up an exceptionally fat revision of Naughty By Nature's "It's On" that places that acapella atop a beat reminiscent of some of the Bomb Squad's most floor-rocking productions for Public Enemy. Over on side B Kesta has his wicked way with Jurassic 5's "In The House", swapping the killer, P-funk-tinged disco-rap beat for a fresh backing track based around an entirely different, and arguably better known, low-slung disco workout.
