Wormhole
Wormhole (12" )
Cat: HB 011. Rel: 22 Dec 04
DJ Quest/Odissi - "Wormhole"
DJ Quest - "Reaktor"
DJ Quest - "Get Nasty"
Review: "Wormholes" haunting dark cinematic intro gives way to the sound of baby Pterodactyls squawking for food, and then, from out of nowhere, the phattest drop unleashed since Leftfields - "Phat Planet"! The tune is just ridiculous. On the flip, Quest goes solo for a couple of funky rollers, "Reaktor" is typical badman quest, with dub-flavoured stabs and percussive licks. "Get Nasty" is something a little different: some garagey off-hi-hats and a bassline that flips back under itself. Add some orgasmic moaning and groaning with a dominatrix telling you to get your kit off and you're suddenly transported to some twisted 25th century sex palace! Nasty indeed.

Oldboy - "Blackbird" (3:55)
Oldboy - "Walrus Party" (4:50)
Xander - "If I Tell EM" (4:58)
Xander - "Get To The Point" (4:52)
Longeez - "Evermore" (4:47)
Longeez - "Wheel Up" (5:09)
Review: The latest from Burnski's Vivid label is a three way split, six track affair with Oldboy, Xander and Longeez each dispatching a pair of tunes in the label's trademark roughneck breakbeat style. - Oldboy kicks off proceedings with the speedy junglisms of 'Blackbird' before the chunkier, funkier and a little more traditionally paced breaks heft of 'Walrus Party'. Xander's 'If I Tell EM' and 'Get To The Point' both plays off two step rhythmic twists and menacing bass against dreamy synths and more breakbeaty flourishes, before Longeez closes proceedings with the slightly sparser 'Evermore' - super sharp hi hats and echoing rasta dialogue - and the appropriately spinback-peppered 'Wheel Up'.

You Are Me
Review: With two critically acclaimed albums to his name, Omid 16B is in the midst of creating a third! And whilst we await fulfillment through its fruits, here are two new prized productions providing a sweet taster of his forthcoming project. Omid's 'Psco' is an atmospheric, breaks driven beauty that seems to create its own impetus, soaring, swirling and dipping as freely as a bird in flight. An immense masterpiece sculpted from a sophisticated range of syncopated rhythms, it is saturated with the moody melodies and fierce 'Squelch Factor' of pulsating synthesisers, hypnotic key patterns and deep, growling sub-bass. With a subtle but captivating Giorgio Moroder/Midnight Express flavour, 'Psco' sounds like a fresh, electrifying soundtrack to a movie that is moving clubland. 'You Are Me', meanwhile, is a classic 16B production. A radiant metamorphosis of electronic funk, its inspired drum programming, sweeping synth patterns, crisp hi-hats and driving percussion all pave the way for a solid, uplifting 4/4 groove that is second to none. The breakdown is heavenly, honing in on cascading colours, piano melodies and infectious rhythms as the bubbling analogue-sounding bassline is dropped. Twisted, tweaked and filtered to perfection, the arrangement is achingly beautiful, its drama addictive. 100% pure16B productions, these tracks are guaranteed to move the crowds, play them loud!

Comatone
Review: Keeping up the pace set by his acclaimed 'Respond In Silence' 12" earlier this year, Demian Castellanos and his Orichalc Phase return with 'Violations' a three track EP due for release on DC Recordings on the 16th October 2006. On the A-Side, the vocal mix of 'Violations' is a beat heavy juggernaut of a track with a whole lot of crossover potential. Mixed by Tim Holmes of Death In Vegas, this is a ravenously hungry, flesh-ripping attack of strung out vocals, Can-inspired rhythms, a menacing Jah Wobble-Sequence bassline, screaming guitars and some serious sonic synthesis. Next up the 'Violations' (Dub), offers a stripped-down take of the title track, this time focusing on the pounding drums and monstrous bassline; elements that combine to create a 23 Skidoo-esque club track for no-nonsense dance fiends and maladjusted home listeners alike. On the B-side we find 'Comatone', a clubbed then dubbed eight minute instrumental epic that moves the feet then melts the mind with its devastating slo-mo reprise. Featuring an upbeat yet sparse drum pattern, an array of percussive parts and stabs of freaky guitar contortions, this is a double-headed opus that will satisfy late night portal dwellers everywhere.

Stay Beautiful (feat One-Two)
Stay Beautiful (feat One-Two - Radioclit remix)
Review: Stacs Of Stamina have managed to make quite a name for themselves in the past year - on releasing their "Tivoli" album, a diverse blend of grime, 8-bit pop, hip hop and their self styled Euro crunk they have garnered critical praise and huge acclaim from all corners of the world. Now it's time for them to make a return with a little help from their friends of course. First up is a remix from someone a little special: Wonder. As Dizzee Rascal's DJ, the man Wonder has been rather busy in the last few years, but he allowed himself time to chop Stacs's "Roll With It" into devastating pieces and come up with a mix that even surpasses the killer original. Waves of distorted bass bubble up over clipped beats that would give prime dubstepper Skream a run for his money! This is set to be one of the dancefloor grime/dubstep tracks of the year, and if you don't believe it then just try turning the track up on a big system - simply earth-shaking. Flip the record over for another surprise, a remix from the Euro crunk super group Radioclit which mangles "Stay Beautiful" until it sounds like a Germanic anthem to quasi-legal pharmaceuticals and badly shaken cocktails - this is one for those ladies out there who wanna get down! Another wicked addition to the always mind-altering Werk label, all that's left to do is roll with the punches.
