Raggamuffin Soldiers (6:11)
Moving On (6:06)
Galactica (6:18)
The Hangman (5:12)
Review: If you're unaware of Aston Harvey's influence and legacy across the entire rave spectrum do yourself a favour, press play and do a little reading. From his role in the Blapps Posse to being Ray Keith's early engineer to his decades in The Freestylers, Aston's DNA is integral to rave culture just as much as Suburban Base is. And here are four fine examples why. Teaming up with DJ Quicklung, each cut his hard with that classic jungle breakbeat sound. Highlights include the dubby tension of 'The Hangman' and the pure unabashed euphoria of 'Moving On'. Oof!

Review: Drum & bass giants Hospital Records get involved with this year's Record Store Day by serving up a limited white vinyl that also serves as further 25th anniversary celebrations. This is on top of the huge 25 rack album that came back in March and features a load more essential remixes, reworks, VIPs and covers of NHS drum & bass classics. Together they serve as a fine snapshot of the label's past, present and future with Camo & Krooked, S.P.Y, Kings Of The Rollers, Lynx, Think Tonk, Kessler, Villem and The Caracal Project all coming correct.

Logistics - "City Life" (4:34)
Q-Project - "Obsession" (5:51)
London Elektricity - "Fast Soul Music" (6:27)
Danny Byrd - "Soul Function" (7:02)
Review: Hospital reach for the reload as their collectable Classic Symptoms series continues with another blast from liquid past. And this one's especially a hoot; all taken from that sweet spot around the mid 2000s, every cut still sparkles with that raw sample-heavy vibe the label was best known for. Logistics' 'City Life' and its melancholy pianos take us back to his debut album in 2006, Total Science's Q Project went full on organ back in 2005 to tremendous effect on 'Obsession' while London Elektricity's 'Fast Soul Music' remains the blueprint for his signature to this day. Last but not least the seminal filtered fire-up 'Soul Function' from Danny Byrd. Old but liquid gold.

Champion Sound (7:01)
Night Moves (6:34)
Review: When it comes to UK hardcore/jungle schematics, they don't come much more authoritative than Q Project's 'Champion Sound'. That growing hoover sound and iconic vocal stab and those mercenary breaks... Like Total Science's Q himself, this still tears up dancefloors almost 30 years later. As does the often overlooked B-side 'Night Moves'. Bumping and rolling in the shadow of the anthem on the a-side, this wonderfully minimalistic track highlights the power of that essential stripped back dynamic of breaks and big bulging subs - the only ingredients any good D&B track truly needs.

Deep Concentration (7:59)
Champion Sound (Doc Scott remix) (6:51)
Review: The Quiffmeister goes back to his most formative era pre Total Science and reloads 'Deep Concentration', the heavily emotional and deep rolling follow-up to the seminal hardcore anthem 'Champion Sound'. Pristine breaks and those beautiful chord changes still hold firm today, this remains a seminal crossover hardcore/jungle blueprint. As does Scotty's remix of 'Champion Sound' on the B. Taking the epic rave thunder of the original and completely subverting it, this remix was another one of Doc Scott's finest operations during this period of UK dance music. Essential history.

Guitar Thing (7:31)
Wild Pitched (5:45)
Instrumental (remix) (7:08)
Review: Total vibes from one half of Total Science; "Guitar Thing" is one of many long sought after Q Project dubs from the man they call Quiff and it still sounds every bit as beguiling and of its own universe as it did back in the mid 90s. So do the Bs: "Wild Pitched" is a timeless stepper stripped back to its essence with crafty switched up drums and eerie pipes while "Instrumental" takes us deep into the desert then whips a sandstorm around us with chop slapping rim shots, harmonised chirps and pads that push you deeper and deeper back in time. The truth never ages.

Sinister Connection (6:18)
The Bongo (6:06)
Lively Connection (6:07)
Mellow Rif (6:11)
Review: What a repress! Pre Total Science era business from Q and Smithy right here as their first ever release together sees the light of day for the first time since 93. Written during their peak free party era, the vibes ooze off the edges as we're thrust onto a rave rollercoaster that takes off with the sweeping chords of "Sinister Connection" and lands with the Detroit-edged tension "Mellow Rif". In between we have the introspective, deeper feels of "The Bongo" and the breakbeat mischief of "Lively Connection". It's a connection that remains just as deep today as it did 27 years ago. Stone cold dons.

Inkipak - "Schedule" (6:44)
Inkipak - "Wetlands" (3:23)
Review: Qeta and Inkipak show off their respective skills on this fine split EP on Sound Synthesis's Wave Function label. Qeta takes care of the a-side with a serene opener in the form of 'Idream' which pairs lush ambient designs with pristine breakbeats. 'Revved Orb' is a more dubbed-out and trippy post-jungle rhythm with 'Redawn' bringing soulful Detroit techno style to the floor. With his trio of tunes, Inkipak offers stripped-back breaks and celestial chords, heavenly moods on 'Schedule' and a cosmic comedown soundtrack with 'Wetlands.'

Inkipak - "Wetlands" (3:23)
Review: Coming to Sound Synthesis' very own imprint, Wave Function, producers Qeta and Inkipak go head-to-head on this incredible new six-tracker, in a rare contemporary example of a "versus" record. Qeta's approach to production makes more sense when we bear his prior explorations in jungle under the name The Jaffa Kid, in mind; helming up the first three tracks that make up the A-side's corpus, the likes of 'Idream' and 'Corpus' reveal a preference for precision, taken to increasingly bloopy, novel and spacious logical conclusions. Inkipak's rebuttal is to resort to cascading breaks blissouts, preferring a more euphoric arsenal made up of ethereal vocals and trilling arps, of which 'Schedule' is the highlight.

Review: Hotline Recordings has you pressing all the right buttons with another devastating deep dubstep outing. This one is from Cardiff boy Quartz and has all the classic genre hallmarks next to some fresh new perspectives. 'Black Decay' rides menacing bass and crispy hits with some jungle fills and eerie sustained chords. 'Abstract' picks up the pace with a broken beat that rides over a booming bottom end with plenty of fizzing synth energy filling in the spaces and 'Pale Tongue' layers up tough drum patterns and dark warehouse vibes.

Review: Quartz on Dispatch? Now this is the type of stuff dreams are made of. Albeit intense, hectic and paranoid dreams that involve lots of running, chasing and jumping off epic cliff edges. All tension and not let-up; 'Static' is pure nervous breakbeat energy, rattling and fizzing with intention. 'Brass Knuckles' corners you and pummels you with its rippling, unending percussive hits. 'Columns' closes this dark saga by firing shots 10 years into the future, all with razor sharp stepper precision. Quartz... The quintessential rock AND hard place.

Rebore (7:21)
Review: Heavyweight Welshman Quartz on one of the UK's most respected jungle D&B platforms Rupture... This is only going to lead to trouble. Each cut tailored for those sweaty, intense Corsica Studio late nights, the Metalheadz artist comes correct on every track. 'Hyrda' is a sonic cutlass, swathing down on heads left-right-centre, 'One Ghetto' is a lesson is glacial tension while 'Lies' is a powerful exercise in drum science, leaving stacks of space for the paranoid basslines to glower and groan through. Last but not least 'Rebore' flips the vibe for more of a steppy, halftime swing laced with percussive ricochets and dense, bewildering textures. Stone cold.

Do It
Runtime
Review: Wild post-d&b from Cardiff music producer Quartz, whose music speaks for itself: in Elliot Garvey, we find an artist rightly hesitant to involve himself in the gaudy blare of online releasing. What is lost in the way of covetous imitativeness, which goes all too commonly with the territory of attempting to maintain an online presence, is made up for with a raw, unversed and entirely original sound, which builds on the tempos and harshnesses of drum & bass while otherwise upending its banalities. 'Russian Roulette' and 'Lucid' hardly care to qualify as d&b tracks proper, more than they do to simply compel the raver to shake uncontrollably, with their gatling percs and no-man's textures. 'Do It', meanwhile, contrasts the A-side's intuit-iators with an intelligent chopper-upper, working rattling and languid voices around a mercenary mix. This is the exception; 'Runtime' returns to the primeval sixteenths and flareup Reese textures that define this wicked EP.

Lilac Cobwebs (feat Selena Jones) (6:06)
Deity Spear (5:22)
Cosmic Horror (6:35)
Switchblade Groove (6:12)
Review: It's been a while since we heard from R&S Records, so we're more than chuffed at news of this latest EP, which this time hears them extend their prolific, ravenous taste for new music ever-further, into what could be described as halftime drum & bass. This time the productions come courtesy of British producer Quartz, and perhaps a name like 'Deity Spear' tells you all you need to know; this is an angelic, synaptic, rapturous EP. Megadeep subs underlie snappy, endlessly-varied hat combos on the openers 'Lilac Cobwebs' and 'Deity Spear', which recall the contributions of Djrum or Lone to the label in recent years, with their cavernous space and extra attention to detail. 'Cosmic Horror' and 'Switchable Groove' refuse to let up on this overarching atmosphere, but lend it a new light altogether, fleshing out evermore sinister contours.

Rikers Island (Dream mix)
Review: Here lie the deepest foundations for drum & bass music's longest standing, most consistent and influential act of all time. Smithy Spinback and Quiffy Q Project comprise Total Science and this is one of their earliest collaborations. A dedication to our hip-hop cousins due west, 'Rikers Island' is a deep and breezy breakbeat cut heavily influenced by the jazzier side of the burgeoning jungle and drum & bass sound coming from the likes of Good Looking and LTJ Bukem at the time. Both remastered here by seminal label Kniteforce , the Dream mix has more jazzy flourishes while the On The Run mix has more drive and heads down energy. Both totally timeless.

Review: Some things are worth waiting for: it's been 11 years since Total Science's debut Tuned In collection. Not ones to fire out releases willy-nilly, they've toiled hard to curate an immaculate compendium that celebrates drum & bass's most timeless, enduring aspects. Over three plates we're treated to some immense cuts that will tickle all D&B DJs flavours. Break's outrageous sub session "Slipstream", Calibre's dubcentric stepper "Clipper Man" and Serum's ghetto-bang drama screamer "Vendetta" are just three of these gems. Get tuned in or go home!

All vinyl tracks have been supported heavily by the likes of Fabio & Grooverider, Friction, Baron and High Contrast.
