Rice Up (12")
Cat: DEATHCHANT 108. Rel: 14 Feb 24
Rice Up (5:18)
Smoke Dad (4:29)
Vegan Rice Beats (1:02)
Review: Deathchant continues its mission to put out the most deranged and situated hardcore out there with this new one from Akira, which takes the label well over 100 releases. 'Rice Up' kicks off with an unlikely sample from the tune best known for defining the Rocky soundtrack and it comes in a world of caustic fuzz and noise. After that one, 'Smoke Dad' is another techno blizzard with dense synth winds howling away over the edgy and serrated bass and beats. 'Vegan Rice Beats' shuts down with hip-hop samples and plenty of scratching.

Break Of Day (5:01)
Break Of Dawn (with Andrew C) (4:50)
Review: Longtime drum & bass legend Aphrodite carved out his own path, helming up his very own Aphrodite Recordings almost from the word jump. The infamously groovy humanoid figure on the front cover of each release (a bit like the Moving Shadow logo, albeit more spiritual) sums up the mood of his releases: hardcore, ecstatic, demi-divine. On 'The Stonka' EP, the producer leans far more in the former territory, however, with 'Stonka' portraying a sub-heavy reversy-breaks cacophony and 'Break Of Day' laying down a ragga-sample-inflected mind-expander, not to mention a clever pun.

Can't Get Enough (5:19)
Review: The latest Coco Bryce EP is different to much of his previous work, eschewing the retro-modern banger-science for something that edges much closer to liquid jungle. Fittingly for the style, an core theme on 'My Space' is that of personal dominion and interiors; like the reams of potential found in a family living room or kitchen, the tracks here are interpretable as everything from 'chill' to 'nostalgic' to 'creepy', depending on how you choose to hear them. The palette is eerie and objective, though Bryce's usual preference for unpolished joy shines through as ever in his choice of samples.

Ready To Go (6:02)
Review: Breakbeat brederen unite for another sermon at the altar of Dawl who brings the chaos to this new 12", Slice & Dice. The title track kicks off with some mad old school scratching before fresh breaks bounce along and a ragged bassline joins in the fun. 'Let's Go For A Ride is another percussive workout with snares and toms all flapping away at high speed and 'Sonic Boom' keeps up the madness with slick, high-speed beats and corrugated bassline. Last but not least, 'Ready To Go' completes the picture with another fresh collision of breaks and scratching.

Over Again (mix 2) (5:12)
Review: As any keen breakbeat heads will know, DJ H's 'The Bass Project' EP came originally back in 1993 and is something of a classic in the genre. It is now getting reissued on nice heavyweight and pink marled vinyl in mad limited quantities but all mastered from a mint vinyl copy. The record infamously suffered from a questionable mixdown and so for this new reissue, the original samples have been re-sourced and layered over the restored files. Apparently, it took some 23 straight man-hours to get the work done - but it has paid off as these sound superb.

Hypnotising (5:06)
Review: We're back in that electrifying breakthrough breakbeat period courtesy of Amen Brother to revisit the sound of the mighty DJ Pooch. This latest volume brings you more of those ruff 'n' tuff crossovers between early hardcore, jungle techno and more besides, beefed up to swing it with the best of them in the modern era. You might well recognise one or two of the samples flying around in 'Mind, Body & Soul (Remix)', while 'Rush On Me' has its own iconic hooks alongside some deadly, skull-crushing breakbeat pressure. 'I Need U' is a vintage, bleepy workout of the highest calibre and 'Hypnotising' finishes the record off in chilling old-skool style. Essential gear for rave veterans and revivalists alike.

Review: Timeless hardcore breakbeat action as label newcomer DJ Stephano makes his debut on Luna C's seminal Kniteforce imprint. 'Heaven' sets the scene with all big flavours from the time; euphoric pianos, wild time-stretched drums and a feel good energy. Deeper into the EP we rave as 'Stella' takes us into deep space with its prowling arpeggio and alien-landing pads. Flip for more piano positivity and hardcore style pitched up vocals while 'Out There' brings the EP to a contemplative close. Classic Kniteforce tackle.

And this five-piece party pack from one of London's most consistent breaksmiths right now - man like Dwarde - is the perfect way to herald their hardcore legacy. Big pianos, pitched up vocals, swashbuckling Amens and house samples galore, Dwarde takes everyone to 1994 on a big old ravey magic carpet but with an edge and energy that will fit all junglist sets at the same time. Review: Dutch hardcore label Sealand have tapped up legendary breakbeat antagonist FFF for a special 7' release which stays true to the rowdy, cut-up style both label and artist are known for. On the A-side, Tommy de Roos flies solo for 'Titan (Back On The Case)', a full-tilt raggacore explosion to set the dance alight in all the right ways. On the flip, we get a true insight into the hardcore culture from this part of the world as sealand's finest rapper KD and local scratch legend DJ Vindictiv jump on for a 'Dead City Version' of the track, marking the first time the old friends of FFF's have appeared on the same record as him.

Review: Filth Rich gets suitably filthy on this fresh outing on Zimp. His Rave EP collides many different influences from techno to electro, acid to rave, and also chucks in some classic samples to really make the tunes pop. The first is a peak-time breakbeat bruiser with slapping hits and yelping vocals, then 'Hippies Gathering' is a prog techno classic from the late 90s Castle Morten rave scene. Randolph offers his own Filthy Rave remix that gets even more wild and included along the way are some sample-tactic snippets to liven up your set no end.

Review: Vinyl Fanatiks take it all the way back to 1993 with this reissued EP by Fruit & Veg. It has been fully remastered of the occasion and sounds as good now in terms of the fidelity, as well as the style, as it did 30+ years ago. 'Dark Enough?' is a nice heads-down and hardcore jungle roller with broad, menacing bass that booms out beneath the silky loops. Flip it over and '25%' again has some devastating amen breaks looped to infinity while more tripped melodies bring a darker rave edge to this one.

Review: It is now Jack Smooth's turn to serve up some sonic brilliance on the hardcore-focused Cantina Cuts. And he does so with a great blend of old-school authenticity but new-school sound design. His rave stabs are tightly coiled and looped, the bass is fleshy and elastic and the vocal samples add that unique character. Once the pianos arrive, the euphoria flows freely. On the reverse is 'Groove Tek' which is a prog techno come jungle fusion which never lets up and is packed with energy and deepness.

Review: Following up some big recent tunes on Noire & Blanche and Scruniversal Tunes, Juravlove is back with more party starting and sample-heavy jams. These are DJ and dancer-friendly tunes suited to a range of settings. First up classic vocal samples define the fresh beats of 'Eleonora' then 'Crystal Cave' is all silky disco loops and 'Stoner Doner' slips into a sunset vibe for beach parties and open-air dancing. Review: Lone's music has always been hugely colourful and has often taken huge inspiration from the rave era of the UK scene's 90s heyday. All that is true again of this new 12" on Greco Roman. It kicks off with 'Waterfall Reverse' which is a day glow, hands in the air, piano-laced jungle banger that does not hold back and douses you in inescapable euphoria. On the flip side is an utterly different proposition. 'Triton' is a pumping house cut with tight chord vamps, bumping drums and throwback r&b vocals. Two killers.

Review: The continued exploration of Marlon Hart's jungle legacy continues apace as Mekatune carries this essential blast from the past. The M-Beat tracks carry that electricity which comes from the breakthrough breakbeat hardcore days, when the ideas took precedence over studio engineering and anything seemed possible. The samples ping around the pitch range, the beats clatter and tumble, and it all sounds absolutely proper. Whether it's the chirpy chipmunk vocal vibes of 'Forever' or the chopped up ragga and mammoth subs of 'Style', this is some of the best gear to come out of that seminal era and the pure swagger of the tracks just can't be replicated in the modern era.

Review: The Vinyl Fanatiks label is doing a superb job of offering up classics from days gone by that need to be heard again. They do so in a range of genres and Mad Dog is behind many of them. He is a hardcore maestro and two of his most explosive sounds are offered up on this new limited 7". There is no let up on the flip when 'Secret Garden' storms out the blocks with just as much breaks-driven energy but more smooth and pensive synth work.

It's a sound that is ever more back in vogue right now as people crave something dark when hitting up their local disco. The single is by New Atlantic and is presented as four different cuts. A collab with Subsidance founder Pressa, 'Dream Machine' is a rolling, break-heavy banger that's not shy of some proper ploughman 4x4. Tapping into the deepest of hardcore and acid house roots, it comes with a fittingly wide-armed range of remixers. Review: Previously operating as Deadly Nightshade, Stuart Brown ignites a brand new alias for this fantastic Kniteforce debut 'Outer Limits'. A love letter to the primordial hardcore soup of the early 90s, each cut flexes a different tempo and vibe as he pays homage to a different shade of hardcore/jungle/techno. 'The Pulse' sounds like something that would have come out of the Jack Smooth HQ in 1991, all rampant pace, heavy kicks and lush pianos. 'Into The Unknown' hits with a Blapps Posse style swagger. 'Feel The Bass' is pure UK hardcore breaks with big Belgian sweeps while 'Memories In Time' brings us to a Subliminal Cuts style euphoric finale. Authentic to the core; keep your finger on this guy!

Review: Three years in and Guachinche are proving themselves to be an essential outpost for UK hardcore and rave styles in Spain. Making their interests abundantly clear, their latest 12" is a VA affair simply titled The Rave. You know exactly what to expect from this release then, and DJ Rasco and Bubble Couple more than deliver on the rolling breakbeat and euphoric piano of 'Old Groove'. Suga7 mixes things up a little with some trancey elements folded into a deft, moody workout, while Mutantbreakz brings all the emotions to 'Keep It Up'. Raverman completes the set with a sound which is closer to the US big beat style of the late 90s, complete with some cyberpunk acid lines and a thread of mysticism in the breakdown. If you want big, bold rave styles, this record has got them in abundance.

Tailored for festivals, it pays homage to the roots with big party energy. Meanwhile on the remix front we're bombarded with an all-star cast as UK OGs Bizzy B and Ed Rush both get stuck in alongside Mike under his Deformer alias. Bizzy is all about the modern rave twist while Ed Rush gets an old Bad Company style and Deformer goes all-out breakcore. The Crack Of Dawn 12" actually dropped in 1993 and is an experimental jungle techno mash up for peak time listening. It's dark, energising and packed with great samples about being high. Review: 31 years have now passed since Smart E's gate-crashed the charts with their contribution to the (short-lived) 'toytown rave' movement, 'Sesame's Treet' - a rather silly (but, in its own way, joyous) breakbeat hardcore tune featuring snippets of the theme tune to 'Sesame Street'. Here the track gets the 2023 remix treatment. Fast flowing 'chap hop' rapper Professor Elemental stars on 'Sesame's Treet 2023', a funkier but no less celebratory re-imagining that retains core elements from the original mix (the raw rave stabs, the boisterous breaks and, yes, bits of that oh-so-familiar theme tune), while the HSI remix is an energetic, extra-percussive, sample-heavy take built around a deliciously wobbly bassline and saucer-eyed chords. The EP also features remastered 1992 album track 'Magnificent', a slightly darker but even more potent hardcore workout.

Review: This is the first full-length LP from DJ and producer Tripped, known for his hard, fast, raw experimental techno style. Despite having released his own music since 2004 - mainly on labels such as Industrial Strength, Motormouth Recordz, and PRSPCT - Tripped may never have worked himself this hard. On 'A Thing About Something', he stretches the foundation of genres like hardcore techno, breakcore, gabber and schranz into entirely new reconstitutions. Strange hardstyle kick armaggedons, serene breakbeat floaters turned creepy and pressurized chambers of claustrophobic doom ensue in an overall whirlwind of pure mayhem.

Review: Did you know that Iceland had its own rather influential rave scene back in the 1990s? Whatever the answer to that question, you will want to check out this first-ever collection of anthems from that era which is now on vinyl for the first time. This collection came on Thule offshoot label TMT Entertainment as a CD in 1992 and features memorable and timeless tracks from back then, many of them now with cult status. It's called Alsaela, which translates as "ecstasy" and gives you some idea of what to expect from it. It features a non-stop selection of old school rave alongside some lost and previously unavailable classics by Agzilla & DJ L.S.K and some unreleased gems from AJAX. A great bit of history that still does the trick.
