Review: Three distinctly outer space-themed cuts from Greece's Alex Celler, each with a linear minimal/tech skeleton that has other, interloping musical influences draped elegantly and classily across it. 'Ancient Astronuats' has the weird, wired mystical stirrings of early Black Dog about it, complete with melting, bendy electro notations that coax it along and add a psychedelic dimension. 'Stargate To Cosmos' has a playful, Drexciyan feel to it, with crunchy, organic drum beats flirting alongside the more rigid electrics. 'Object In The Sky' is the most minimal of the pack, sleek and stalker-like, but still contains enough action - mainly floating around up there in the ether - to hold and build attention.

Review: Ever the champion of brains and brawn in equal measure, Maceo Plex makes his debut appearance on Drumcode with this punchy beast of a single. "Conjure Dreams" features plenty of Plex signifiers, from the rounded and rowdy bassline pump to the haunting tone of the synth lines, neatly packaged in a chunky framework of big room drums. "Conjure Floyd" meanwhile burrows into more minimal territory where the tones are amelodic and the percussion takes the lead, calling to mind the restraint and tension of classic M_nus productions where so much could be said with so little.

Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

Review: Techno troubadour Yan Cook has a fine discography on some of the most respected labels out there. Now he heads to Ukraine's Cooked, a young but perfectly formed imprint, and kicks off his EP with 'Blades,' which is all melon twisted synths and driving techno kicks. 'Whistleblower' then slips into a deeply atmospheric groove with gurgling bass and watery effects and 'Grom' is all about the swing in the drums. Gritty textures and insistent claps add to the thrill of it all and 'Skyhigh' is a more frosty dub techno cut that leaves out breathless.

Review: As if the first two volumes of the Dimensions series weren't enough, Steve O'Sullivan is back on Sushitech with a final Parallels addendum to the collaborative series. On this occasion, the double vinyl set is reserved for four special longform mixes which let the ideas roll out in a truly hypnotic style. Of course, that's exactly how Ricardo Villalobos likes it and 'Short Circuit' tangles up beautifully in a mesh of interlocking rhythmic hiccups and immersive pads. Thomas Melchior holds down a sweet sustained groove for O'Sullivan's illustrious melodics on 'The Shadow' before Dana Ruh helps strip things down even further on the murmuring 'Beneath The Surface'. Review: Fresh from serving up some savage "Rave Reworks" on an ultra-limited 12" single, techno's leading number crunchers return with an EP of fresh studio jams. As usual, what's on offer is intense, full-throttle and mind-altering in the extreme. Check, for example, opener (and title track) "000000005", where increasingly ragged, wayward and psychedelic acid lines surge forwards over a stomping, kick-drum dominated beat, or"000000006", an acid techno onslaught that waves a glow-stick towards the Halcyon days of German techno-trance. Review: Seminal reissue alert! Baby Ford had already been a chart-baiting acid house superstar by the time he launched the PAL SL label in 1996. He'd left behind the major label scene and moved firmly back into the underground with exploratory techno releases on Ifach and collaborations with Mark Broom. This new label marked a shift for Ford though, setting him up for the trips into minimalist club tracks that have been his bread and butter for decades now. Review: Changa Brighton-based producer Rene Wise is next up on the SK11-X offshoot run by Setaoc Mass. He has had a fine run of form recently with big outings on labels like Luke Slater's Mote Evolver and a recent collab with Rodhad. Here he shows off his versatility across four powerful cuts starting with 'Fuego', a fiery track that powers onwards. 'Tell Me' is up next and is a driving, linear and hypnotic workout with bubbling bass and paranoid vocals. 'Tizer' then ups the ante with more irresistibly pinging kick drums and coarse claps. Review: 'At Les' is one of Carl Craig's most beloved productions: a gorgeously dreamy chunk of Innerzone Orchestra style tech-jazz that first surfaced - on a now in-demand compilation - 25 years ago. Craig has revisited it several times since, but it's Christian Smith's 2010 reworks - reissued on this 12" for the first time since - that are arguably the most peak-time ready and dancefloor-centric. On the A-side 'Tronic Treatment' version Smith layers the track's iconic synthesizer motif - heart-achingly poignant and drenched in delay - and deep, spacey chords over deep, rumbling sub-bass and a crunchy deep house beat. Smith ups the tempo and intensity on the arguably even better 'Hypnotica Mix', which is closer in tone to pure Motor City techno and features a genuinely spellbinding breakdown.

Review: Some 25 years after delivering his debut 12", Richard D James hasn't lost the ability to thrill or inspire. By his obtuse standards, the material that makes up the surprise Cheetah EP is actually rather laidback and melodious. "Cheetah2 (LD Spectrum)", for example, sounds like a slow house jam written by robots, while the even deeper "Cheetah7B" shuffles along in a metronomic fashion, seemingly oblivious to the increasingly aggressive World at large. Of course, those trademark skittish IDM rhythms are present - see the B-side's lead cut - and the Cornishman has thrown in a couple of hazy ambient cuts for good measure.

Review: We've been enjoying the first few volumes of Selador Recordings's Magic Black Plastik series and this fourth one keeps the quality levels high. It assembles a fine crew of artists for some quality house steeped in emotion. 'Will We Ever Learn' (Jamiie remix) opes up with some sophisticated string stabs and nice deep groove before a Luke Brancaccio & Gai Barone remix brings a little techno futurism and steeliness to Anthony Pappa & Jamie Stevens's 'Hold You Back.' The B1 is a tune to lock a late night crowd into a melodic haze and the final Tim Engelhardt remix is a chunky but melodic roller.

Review: To celebrate its first anniversary Lempuyang firmly stakes its claim amongst the forefront of deep techno labels with an outrageous line-up consisting of eight of the most respected heads in the business, all doing their stuff across four pieces of vinyl. Among the highlights are the growling menace of Sa Pa's 'Randomer', Gradient's fizzy, dubbed up 'Dopamine Rain' wearing its Basic Channel influence on its sleeve, the ghostly rave stabs of Deadbeat's 'Planterwald' among a sea of radioactive white noise and the clear, sculpted linear grooves of 'Growing Pains' by Bluetrain. That said, there's no weak link among the eight cuts and put together into one coherent package it's more than the sum of its parts.

Review: Charlotte De Witte's KNTXT label is one of new school techno's most influential and has very much helped to take techno into harder, darker, trance-tinged realms in recent times. Alignment is one of the artists who has helped with that and now serves up more blistering cuts on the Close Your Eyes EP. The title track is a monstrous opener with bright synths and serrated saw-shaped sounds cutting up the flat-footed drums. The hard techno vibes continue on 'Deep Space' and more trance energy washes over 'Dance For Me' which is decidedly 90s in vibe. 'Fight For A New World' closes down with the sort of hands-in-the-air energy of an epic festival anthem.

Review: It comes as a surprise that brothers Tom and Ed Russell - Tessela and Truss, together known as Overmono - are set to release their debut album. That's because their names are synonymous with a certain bleak UK techno sound, following the trend of imagery associated with the likes of St. Etienne, Mt. Kimbie or Real Lies, plus their music and live sets have seen to a wealth of stonking tracks over the years. They're arguably the popularisers of live techno for the next generation, so in 2023, we're floored by the Mandela-effecting notion that they haven't put out an album before. Thankfully, 'Good Lies' is their magnum opus, blending elements from emotive UK soul (the St. Panther feature on 'Walk Thru Water'), future garage (spot the Tirzah samples on 'Is U'), and pirate radio chatter and crud (basically every other track). Nu-school ravers rejoice; this is your defining album.

Review: With a run of knockout singles on XL reaching back to 2016, Tom and Ed Russell finally deliver the album we always knew they had in them. Overmono is a project which happily gorges on the best bits of rave culture and spits back out something fresh, universal and yet still headsy enough to keep the underground faithful happy. Good Lies builds on that promise in every way, threading in anthemic vocal hooks and massive emotive brushstrokes without losing that legit bite which has made them so enduringly popular. 'Is U' has an eye on the charts for sure, with plenty of big festival moments bagged along the way for their live shows and everyone else DJ sets. 'Walk Thru Water' hits a more melancholic note with St. Panther on vocals, but it's still masterfully crafted to bring out joyous escapism with gnarly synth flex on top. Something for everyone, then.

Review: After a five year album-hiatus, the iconic UK artist is back with his highly-anticipated release, Crash Recoil, which has found its home on the equally iconic Tresor. Drawn from the spontaneous experimentation of Surgeon's live sets, Crash Recoil spans eight MIDI-sequenced, hardware-reconfigured tracks, inflected with the artist's signature penchant for raw and rugged sound. The first track, 'Oak Bank', builds up to a throbbing core - a cacophony of driving percussion and side-stepping melodic layers that shift expertly in and out of focus. 'Second Magnitude Stars' moves with a tidal rhythm, like waves retreating backwards across shingle before crashing forwards once again with force. 'We Laugh & Clap At The Circus' is, texturally speaking, a touch lighter and more spacious, yet still replete with a sense of spiralling chaos. 'Leadership Contes' feels closer to ground-level - earthy yet eerie atmospheres meld with drums that seem located in the subterranean. A masterful album from the techno key-player - well worth the five year wait.

Review: WestBam and Klaus Jankuhn conceived Members Of Mayday as a production team to produce the official anthems for each edition of the Mayday rave events in Germany. While that project disbanded in 2014 after more than 20 years, now the definitive of all the Mayday anthems is being revisited on Electric Ballroom. The original 'Mayday Anthem' came out in 1992, and it's absolutely redolent of the times with its killer rave stabs and proto-trance atmosphere, but there's still a welcome roughness to the tune which would soon be lost once production values and budgets started soaring. Offering something a little different on the A-side, Thomas Schumacher goes in hard with a romping arpeggio which sounds like Giorgio Moroder on steroids, strapping it under the track's classic elements to brilliant effect.

Review: Move D and the late Pete Namlook recorded a lot of material during the heady years of Fax +49 Records, with some 24 CDs issued up to 2010 and additional singles besides. It's a lot of material to make sense of, but thankfully Away Records have taken up the mantle of providing a filter by means of this series of reissues, which started in 2019 and now returns for a second round. Picking just two tracks this time around, they've chosen two surprisingly energetic tracks from a partnership more commonly imagined traversing vast spaces of ambient electronica. 'Silk Route', pulled from the 2008 album Travelling The Silk Route, is a punchy affair with shifting sands of synths and samples atop a punchy electro-techno rhythm section. On the flip, 'Sleeplearnin' is a masterclass of deep and dubby house music with an abundance of ambient techno flourishes on top - a combination which works beautifully. Collectors rejoice at this red vinyl edition, no less!

Review: Spray is an alias for Berlin-based Irish producer Tiarnan McMorrow. In the past couple of years he's been building up his own Spray label with releases from Dimensions 23, Drua, Anoesis and Marijn S. In the meantime, his own productions have been carried by Craigie Knowes and Kalahari Oyster Cult, so you should be clear on where his sonic interests lie. This is trancey tech house which tips more heavily towards trance than the average dabbler, not least on the piano soaked bombast of 'OT Rails' which should have you reaching skywards before there's even whiff of the first drop.

Review: Warp continues to comb back through the landmark Artificial Intelligence series with this landmark record from Jochem Paap, aka Speedy J. Alongside a tandem reissue of Richie Hawtin's F.U.S.E. album Dimension Intrusion, this remastered edition of Ginger takes us back into the heart of early 90s techno innovation, when new ideas were developing globally at a rate of knots. Paap had already established himself in the harder end of the techno pool, but Ginger flipped the script with an immersive, meditative exploration of minimalism and melodic structure. Amongst the eternal classics are some dazzling miniatures deemed 'Fills' which make for some of the most compelling listening on this seminal slice of early 90s techno.

Review: Neapolitan duo Fireground have been on a rapid ascent since debuting on Tresor in 2021, and following their Recreation 12" earlier this year they return to Ilian Tape for a second round of immersive, high-pressure techno soul. Compared to a lot of the dark and dystopian sounds infiltrating the faster reaches of the modern techno scene, Fireground have a strong sense of uplift which comes through in abundance on the likes of 'Memories', as harmonious, dubbed-out pads and thunderous drums collide for maximum positive response. Review: UK-based Yuri Suzuki has been sneaking out high-quality machine jams for a long time now, riffing with DMX Krew on 7777, popping up on Herbert's Accidental Jnr label and bringing the heat to Super Rhythm Trax last year. Now he's landed on German label Sketches for another expert excursion into raw outboard expression, where tension and restraint become as potent as distortion and intensity in making these dancefloor bombs. 'Drastic' is a fine case in point for build-up and release that doesn't resort to brute force but instead focuses on psychoactive sonic results. If you value rugged acid delivered with finesse, you'll be more than satisfied with Suzuki's latest set of squelchy work outs.

Review: Hailing from the brilliant, tangled web orbiting Future Sound Of London, Mental Cube was one of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans' short-lived side projects which found them indulging in the bleep and acid house sound. Given the talent at the controls, it's little wonder this release became such a holy grail - a misfit twist on the conventional formula of club records at the time and yet still as satisfying as any of the more widely played early 90s hits. This is the first time the release has been reissued in its true original form, meaning both mixes of 'So This Is Love' and the 'Santa Monica Mix' of 'Q'. Listen out for the cheeky nod to 808 State on 'So This Is Love' - a respectful tip of the hat rather than a cheeky lift, we'd say.

Review: Border One is an alias for Steven Petit, who has been exploring tough, tunnelling techno since 2015 and taking in prominent labels like Wolfskuil, Token and Voltage along the way. Now he makes a return to SK_Eleven with four formidable workouts pitched towards the most serious of dancefloors. Just listen to the creeping drones sweeping through the middle distance on 'Optical Void' and you'll know this record is no laughing matter. 'Inner Sight' is possibly the most psychoactive track on the EP thanks to its relentlessly looping synth phrases, but in fairness each and every one of these tracks will work wonders when you want to get everyone locked in good and proper.

Review: Strap in for a punchy techno ride here as Micropulse wastes no time in setting the dial to warp speed on this Midnight EP for Atom Trance Force. The title cut opens up and is a hard techno pumper with some flat footed drum funk and edgy chords up top. 'Doesn't Matter' then has a hands in the air synth lead darting about the mix next to old school trance pads and a warped bassline over more hammering drums. 'Entry' shuts down with a final mix of trance and techno that is are to bring real carnage to the club.

Review: Ukraine's Yan Cook is one of those low-key but highly skilled producers who have mastered the art of turning out consistently excellent techno cuts. It is Planet Rhythm that snap him up now for more of his linear bangers starting with the moody and paranoid opener 'Hydraulic', a pressurised cut that will bowl any dancefloor over. 'Null' then gets more gritty and textured as it rocks back and forth and 'Imla' (Red Rooms remix) takes a more subliminal and stripped-back approach to techno hypnosis.

Review: TV Hill Records starts things off rough and curiosity-rousing, with a technical itch from OG AG (Andrew Grant) in collaboration with fellow producer Dimneonsum. A mid-paced deep techno calculator, 'What's Up Everybody' pares back any semblance of emotion for pure robotic urgency, with every sound moving in juddering clockwork lockstep in an abstracted world of pure, preservative mathematic topology. Opener 'San Fran' pits nervous FM loops against an equally anxious Shepard-tonal riser, while calmer moments such as the beatless 'Drakey' still disquiet with their eerie glassiness. One for the bleepy heads, the only humanistic element is the revelatory vocal sample on 'Found Out'.

Review: It's been a long time since we heard from Pangaea, one of the three famous faces who made up the original Leeds label come ubiquitous DJ's DJ's DJ imprint - Hessle Audio. Though perhaps less appreciated than his contemporaries Ben UFO and Pearson Sound, now's his time to shine again: Changing Channels is his second ever album, following up 2016's In Drum Play (which for all its quality, rough, juddering techno experiments, will always line the shelves of many a budding selector). Like its predecessor, oddball bassy techno is here Pangaea's preferred mode, whether reflected in the sassy femme vocal cutups of 'Installation' or the spitting basses of 'Squid'. Review: German label Cocoon is a real icon when it comes to techno. It very much introduced the genre to the mainstream with its presence in Ibiza and continues to put out plenty of useful 12"s as well as its wide array of compilations. This latest is an eighth edition of the Dots & Pearls collection which tends to more stripped back and underground than some of its other annual round-ups. As such we get dark and menacing techno growers like 'Antidot' from Alex Bau, Redshape's misty and loft creeper 'Ghost Story' and Aocram & Ramsey Neville team up for the ghoulish and swampy techno energy of 'Brooklyn Structure', with plenty more besides.

Review: Ohm and Kvadrant continue to offer their services in the dub techno vein; clearly, this isn't their first Kontakt. 'Treasure Of Kings Garden' reflects a single fantasy: the muted pleasure of discovering a forbidden gem buried at the bottom of his royal majesty's grounds. We imagine Ohm and Kvadrant's king to be a tyrant; necessarily, in fact, his sadism is the exact measure against which this diamond's value can be measured. The three mixes of the sole track 'Precious Little Diamond' unfurl like different stages of bejewelled delight and respite, from the initial 4x4 discovery to Deadbeat's halfstep black market laundering, and followed shortly by Levon Vincent's impressively textural evocation of cathartic relief, on receipt of such requisitioned-then-resold royal riches.

Review: The Nullpunkt label is fast approaching its 25th release but first comes this fearsome outing from F&E. The third installment in the Forschung & Entwicklung series comes on grey vinyl and does not mess about with five more cuts all served up as Antal or Rural versions from 2016. The first rides on rusty jungle breaks, the second, 'Conclusion', is an atmospheric piece with a minimal rhythm and warped synth daubs while 'Six Days' is a dark and heavy piece of ambient techno dystopia. 'Outro' is the lightest and brightest piece of synth work on the EP then 'Research' brings back the jungle techno with more serrated synths and loopy, jagged rhythms.

Review: Jinn April is a South Korean born, now Detroit based artist who moved to the Motor City in pursuit of the music she loves. She has since established herself in the city as DJ PIA with sets at all the right venues and a cross-genre style that is the norm for the originators in the Mid West. Now comes her own self released first EP, and it's a fine one. "Heal Myself N Moving On" is raw, unapologetically rough house with hi hats, gauzy chords, wooden hits and knackered kicks all chucked into a loose mix and allowed to evolve on their own. "Somewhere Deep In My Heart" is another ramshackle mix of odd melodies and detuned jazz, while "Reincarnation" is a melange of keys and chords, occult synth sounds and icy hi hats that is purely experimental and "You Can Do It Baby" ends in similarly singular fashion. This is exactly the sort of unusualness you would expect of an artist who has established herself in Detroit.
