INNATE 004
INNATE 004 (12")
Cat: INN8 004. Rel: 11 Jan 21
  1. Aroy Dee - "Leegte" (5:29)
  2. Gilbert - "Furthest Planet" (7:26)
  3. Jonski - "Venusian Surface" (6:23)
  4. DJ Guy - "Aphelion Orbit" (5:56)
Review: The fourth multi-artist EP from blog-turned-record label Innate takes the imprint's inherently warm and far-sighted sound into new intergalactic directions. Offering a quartet of cuts from established producers and rising stars, all inspired by dreams of cross-cosmic travel and the alluring weightlessness of deep space. 004 explores the love of stargazing electronics in much greater deapth.

The A-side is all about melodious and spacey electro with Dutch legend Aroy Dee making a rare appearance away from his acclaimed M>O>S Recordings label. "Leegte" A1 is impressively immersive, cloaking a jaunty bassline and lo-fi beats in sumptuous aural textures and glassy-eyed chords. Accompanied by Innate label regular Gilbert, "Furthest Planet" A2 is a deep roller whose lilting lead lines, shimmering electronics and tumbling acid lines are little less than life-affirming.

On side B, the sound subtly shifts towards the multi-coloured, sci-fi shimmer of techno. Newcomer Jonski, (aka Bristol electro producer Zobol) drops "Venusian Surface" B1 - a classic interstellar jam full of vivid chords, echoing synth squiggles and alluring leads that rise above a classic tech-funk bassline. Last but not least, effervescent Welshman DJ Guy (Unthank/Other World Music) slams down an energetic techno stomper in "Aphelion Orbit": boasting brilliantly breathless drum programming, illuminated by the celestial shimmer of accompanying chords. A perfect conclusion to Innate's most action-packed release to date.

  1. Most High (6:10)
  2. Twelve Gates (6:06)
  3. Dwelling Place (7:23)
Review: Detroit techno veteran Luke Hess is back on his DeepLabs imprint, and on this one he teams up with brother Jeff who makes another rare appearance since his great debut on FXHE back in 2012. There's some sublime dub techno on offer here (as you'd well expect from the pair), and you will immediately feel lost in the groove of slinky and hypnotic A side cut 'Most High' as it glides elegantly through layers of vintage delay and glacial reverbs. The following cut 'Twelve Gates' is a stomping DJ tool that takes it cues from the timeless aesthetic of Axis/Purposemaker releases. The flipside belongs to the majestic deep techno epic 'Dwelling Place', the perfect soundtrack for a winter night drive along Lake Michigan. This is the 10th anniversary release on Hess's label, featuring full sleeve artwork by Haqq.

  3. Preacha Bonus (5:08)
Review: It's been a while since Zolta Pal last used the Jaffa Surfa alias. In fact, his last outing under the pseudonym dropped three years ago on Houseworx (the US garage-flavoured Pimpin' EP). This three-tracker happily finds him in fine form, delivering a more tech-tinged trio of aquatic deep house cuts. There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the subterranean shuffle and liquid melodies of "Bazz" and heavy percussive bump of "Psy Lance" - all thickset, multi-tracked drums, calming pads and fizzing electronics - to the beatless bliss of "Preacha Bonus", which - unsurprisingly given the title - features a deep south preacher chatting over heady ambient chords.

Cat: DB 001. Rel: 29 Dec 20

Review: Two slices of wonderfully wonky techno explorations from the genre's leftfield territories from Us producer Jack Coleman aka The Jak, following appearances on a host of respectable labels including Torque, Fade Records, Subspec, 530Techno and his own SubSensory Recordings. This limited-to-300 run features 'Tribute', big on bulging, vivid bleeps, dayglo tones and skittering electro-related drum machination, while flip track 'Wicked Hysteria' offers slightly steadier if still relatively giddy grooves. Gorgeous analogue delights aplenty, in short.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working order***

Jinn April is a South Korean born, now Detroit based artist who moved to the Motor City in pursuit of the music she loves. She has since established herself in the city as DJ PIA with sets at all the right venues and a cross-genre style that is the norm for the originators in the Mid West. Now comes her own self released first EP, and it's a fine one. "Heal Myself N Moving On" is raw, unapologetically rough house with hi hats, gauzy chords, wooden hits and knackered kicks all chucked into a loose mix and allowed to evolve on their own. "Somewhere Deep In My Heart" is another ramshackle mix of odd melodies and detuned jazz, while "Reincarnation" is a melange of keys and chords, occult synth sounds and icy hi hats that is purely experimental and "You Can Do It Baby" ends in similarly singular fashion. This is exactly the sort of unusualness you would expect of an artist who has established herself in Detroit.

Review: Pan Pot's Second State label strides into 2021 with a big new slab of techno from Joyhauser. It is a direct to dance floor three tracker that launches off with 'Think People', a techno tune as frazzled, high impact and hard hitting as you could wish for. The drums are monstrous, the kick swing low and the whole thing will fry your brain. 'Molly' is more stripped back but not less high impact as it barrels forwards on a surging groove with sleek synths peeling off the beats. Michael Klein remixes 'Think People' to close out on another powerful techno groove.

Review: Truth is stranger than fiction they say, 2020 has proven it. This is not the year we asked for, but it's the year we received. Remarkably, even as clubs and social events across the world shuttered, the spirit of Techno remained alive in living rooms, bedrooms, and basements planet-wide. We hope you still draw inspiration, and excitement in the culture we've collectively nurtured for so many years. Before long we will see each other again, hug and kiss one another, and reconnect under more auspicious stars. For now, we wait. Luckily, we have new music for you to pass the time. We present our latest vinyl 12" record release: 'Life Under Lockdown', featuring tracks by Kessell (1/2 of the legendary Spanish duo, Exium), Joton (founder of Newrhythmic Rec.), HD Substance (co-founder of Sub_tl, and teacher at the Bass Valley), and JX-216 (co-founder of From 0-1). Modern, syncopated Techno for the new world.

Review: James Ruskin and Mark Broom are tow of the most iconic names in techno. They are a dream team pairing and prove that once more with this collaborative four tracker on Ruskin's legendary Blueprint label. 'Pr1' is lithe but muscular, with rubbery kick drums pounding away beneath frazzled stabs that all work you into a state of hypnosis. 'Ocs' is another subtle and supple fusion of bendy synths and well cushioned kicks and 'Tkn' heads off down a loopy melodic minimal rabbit hole. 'Sn7' is the most rave of the lot with its undulating synths bringing texture to more cantering techno drums. Classy, effective, essential.

  4. Jackson Lee - "Clouds Of Xeen" (5:56)
Review: Deep Club launches another split-12" consisting of two unlikely pairings. Berlin via Chicago's Snad leads the A-side. After co-founding Gandu Records in Chicago he jumped across the pond, where his output increased quickly for the likes of Minibar and Smallville while contributing to US favorites Kimochi and TerraFirm. On Jargon / Syntax Error, "Jargon" encompasses his signature style of deep, minimal, swinging house. The track builds over almost eight minutes with a massive rolling baseline and sporadic synth stabs and pads. Mix out too early and you miss the point. "Urban Decay" is a bass massage that hits only on the right sound system or headphones. Jackson Lee takes side B in a different direction while still exploring themes around deep and minimal. The mysterious NYC via Memphis techno producer boasts an impressive catalog on his Mystical Disco imprint, as well as collaborations with Ben Jenkins, R Gamble and Grey People. "Syntax Error" is an extended techno bomb with a massive kickdrum that will leave dancefloors sizzling. The eerie effects crawling in and out of the texture and sharp hats combine with the low end for a masterclass in deep techno. "Clouds of Xeen" brings the energy down with distortion, wispy pads, and glistening layers, making it a great choice for 6 AM sleaze.

Review: Brooklyn-based queer nightlife luminary Jasmine Infiniti self-released her debut album, BXTCH SLAP, in March 2020. Dark Entries steps forward to present the album remastered and on double vinyl. Over the thirteen disruptive club cuts of BXTCH SLAP, Jasmine conjures occult rave incantations with sub-tectonic bass and seductive harmonies. Audaciously championing R&B, vogue, and hip-hop sounds, Jasmine Infiniti's latest collection of techno-hybrid dance tunes is built for the dancefloors of underground nightlife. While SiS, her debut EP, was an ode to queer solidarity, community, and sisterhood, BXTCH SLAP refines the art of personal myth-building. It is an unflinching and uncompromising album, but it also boasts surprising range, moving briskly between ethereal hardcore house ("HOTT"), anxious dark electro ("SPOOKED"), and certifiable techno bangers ("YES, SIR", "WELLFAIR"). Meanwhile album standout "<3" hovers just above 100 BPM, a defiant statement of euphoric sensuality that's no less gripping for its dramatic deceleration. Closing number "SHONUFF" clocks in at ten and half minutes, but not a second of this acid-laced adrenaline rush feels wasted. BXTCH SLAP might be suited for the high-impact dancefloor, but this music takes on a new life in the moments we spend between the parties, alone and full of desire.

Review: Canadian minimal veteran Tomas Jirku has been a little quiet of late, but now he makes a welcome and unexpected return with something quite different for Silent Season. You can hear echoes of his earlier work in the soundscapes he's sculpted across Touching The Sublime, as high-definition sonic manipulation draws on his experience and eye for detail in wielding music technology, but rather than creating pointillist rhythmic structures, he's more concerned with billowing clouds of ambience. It's easy to draw parallels with the likes of Tim Hecker, but there's space for more techno-oriented productions in the midst of the maelstrom. Epic in scope and powerfully rendered, this is an album that will feed your head for a long time to come.
