Kognitive
Kognitive (12")
Cat: KEY 021. Rel: 04 Dec 20
  1. Kognitive (6:03)
  2. Memory (5:50)
  3. Perception (5:50)
Review: Aiken is a techno procure from Spain who brings a stylish sound. It's full fat, clean and stylish, with a focus on the art of repetition. HIs tunes are built from simple but well-designed things - rubbery kicks, shakers, spangled synth motifs, and then he just tweaks and teases them all for the hypnotic duration of each track. 'Kognitive' eventually contorts itself into a real banger, 'Memory' is a sci-fi and melodic masterclass a la Luke Slater and then last of all, 'Perception' sinks down into a deep and linear techno tunnel where all of reality becomes distorted and unreal.

  3. Julie (6:27)
  4. Mucuya (7:01)
Review: Germany's Key Vinyl serves up not one but two banging EPs for us this month. David Lohlien is behind this one and is very much at the heart of a new school of techno producer who is doing the simple things right. His loopy, hard hitting sound is perfectly distilled to the core elements. Each one is perfectly meticulous, and together they add up to functional but also well formed techno that races straight ahead. 'Akien' it's glitchy and metallic, 'Sentena' built from wall rattling kicks, 'Julie' brings an eerie vocal to flip you out in the club and 'Mucuya' hammers you over the head and will have you screaming that you love it.

  10. Ultrasonic Sound (3:12)
Review: Born Abstract is a debut album from UK bleep and breakbeat master DAWL aka Dropout main man Darren Woollard on the Childhood Intelligence label. It's an intergalactic trip back to the future, with computerised melodies and heavy drums on 'Quadrant 6' then more manic techno stomps on 'Red Sky.' Elsewhere things get deep on 'Recon' a slippery and supple track with rich acid. 'Quantoum Jam' heads into electro territory and then it's an old school rave on 'I'm Confused'. Born Abstract is fun, fulsome, fantastic and as good as retro-future techno gets.

  14. Workaround 10 (1:12)
Review: It's been a long time coming, but finally Beatrice Dillon has delivered her debut album - and it's a peach. It sees her "Workaround" a set rhythmic idea - 150 BPM percussive polyrhythms influenced by various global drumming styles - to create a suite of tracks rooted in bass-heavy UK style "broken techno" but vastly different in tone and style. Thanks to a range of impressive guest musicians (techno experimentalists Batu and Laurel Halo both contributed alongside veteran jazz players, one of Britain's best bhangra drummers and a cellist), there's a fantastic hybrid electronic/acoustic vibe throughout, with Dillon's experimental instincts combining with her grasp of mood and melody to create a suite of impossible-to-pigeonhole tracks that genuinely sound like nothing else around. In a word: superb

  2. Make Your Own Sunshine (6:09)
  3. Serpentine Tale (6:02)
  4. The Introducer (8:10)
Review: Although rarely spoken about in hushed tones, Peter Adshead AKA Baby Ford is one of British house and techno's true pioneers. As many readers will know, he spent the first decade of his career exploring acid house and rave, before switching to a deeper and more minimalistic techno and tech-house sound towards the end of the '90s. It's in that period that BFORD14, which is finally being reissued, first appeared in stores. Intoxicating, bass-heavy and entrancing, the EP's many highlights include the hissing hypnotism of 'Serpentine Tale', the deep bass, melancholic synthesiser chords and crunchy drums of 'Night D3 Died', and the spacey, deep techno warmth of deliciously hazy closing cut 'The Introducer'.

  3. Ego Rave C (5:09)

Review: Swiss techno mainstay Deetron is much older than he looks, and a much finer producer than he often gets credit for. He speaks freely though his machines to cook up techno as pure as the snow of his homeland, as airy as the mountains around him. This Ego Rave EP on Gerd Janson's Running Back offers five hugely effective and stylish DJ tools that cover techno on 'A', and happy piano house on 'B'. 'C' throws it back, with synth funk and house colliding nicely and 'D' unhinges itself and gets lost in big chord vamps. 'D1' is pure peak time fire.

Nothing Stops Detroit
Cat: REKIDS 165. Rel: 03 Dec 20
  1. Nothing Stops Detroit (6:32)
  2. 7 Mile Dog (4:42)
  3. Ignite A War (6:26)
  4. The Cure (6:46)
Review: What a coming together this is - Detroit pioneer Robert Hood and European techno powerhouse Rekids on one blistering record. The title track is as powerful and unrelenting as the name suggests, with bass fired from a machine gun under militant snare rolls and sweeping filters adding to the waves of techno washing over you repeatedly. '7 Mile Dog' is a little more freeform, with synths riding up and down the mix but more high pressure drum work and coarse snares locking you down. 'Ignite A War' is the sort of expertly reduced minimal that Robert Hood is best known for and lastly, 'The Cure' builds a big old wall of techno designed purely for warehouse detonation.

Review: Ruben Uvez AKA Kondu returns to one of his home labels having also landed on Bristol's Idle Hands before now. He is notoriously hard to pin down, style wise, and constantly evolves into fresh new territory. For a kick off here he explores deep, underwater techno on the delicious 'Orbu' before then getting more tribal, with skittish toms bumping over a vast kick drum. It's fantastic body music with real character. 'Devre' is a dreamy ambient techno cut and 'Ayva' closes out with some crisp broken beat work from outer space.

  1. Downstairs (6:25)
  2. Tesseract (4:35)
  3. March 3 (5:56)
Review: Michael Diekmann is half of Morphology and here he assumes his CRC alias for a cross-genre workout on Further Electronix. 'Downstairs' is first up, and it rewires techno with cosmic electro synth lines, neo-IDM sound design and booming drums all run through with some prickly acid. What's not to love? 'Tesseract' is another kinetic cut, this time on scattered broken beats that make you want to disconnect all your limbs and get involved. Completing a small but perfectly formed EP is 'March 3', a dream-inducing ambient tech cut that drifts off into the cosmos and takes you with it. Lovely stuff.

Review: A staple of Simon Hi-Shock's Gynoid Audio and Darknet labels, Italian DJ/producer Giuseppe Scaccia (aka D Leria) now makes his debut on Avian with Still Standing, an extended EP of cerebral techno experiments. The Affekt Club resident nails that 'Sound Of Rome' quite well on the droning tunnel vision of 'Divergences' and the particularly mental 'Noises From The Room' which start off the A side in fine form. On the flip, Scaccia channels the early noughties sounds of percussive techno in the vein of Ben Sims and Oliver Ho on the fittingly titled 'Tribalism' and then closes it out with the introspective IDM of 'Il Giardino Degli Unicorni'.

  2. Tommy (5:09)
  3. Utrecht (2:24)
  4. Escape (6:06)
  5. Demonstration (5:36)
Review: Parisian scene stalwart DJ Deep has always transcended genre, keeping one foot in deep house, and the other in futurist, Detroit-inspired techno. This ability to twist elements of both styles - and more - into thrilling new dancefloor shapes is evident on Fosph, his first EP for Tresor in five years. He begins by adding humid field recordings and booming bass to a polyrhythmic Afro-tech rhythm on 'Swamps', before unleashing a jacking techno drum jam (the sweaty and intense 'Tommy'). 'Utrecht' is a hushed, spaced-out ambient soundscape, while 'Escape' is a panicked, paranoid techno throb-job that features subtle nods (to our ears at least) to the '88 version of the KLF's 'What Time is Love'. To round things off, he returns to chunky, polyrhythmic techno via the late-night murkiness of 'Demonstration'.

Race For The Vaccine
Race For The Vaccine (white vinyl 7")
Cat: TWA 001. Rel: 02 Dec 20
  1. Race For The Vaccine (version A) (3:35)
  2. Race For The Vaccine (version B) (3:27)
Review: Two underrated legends of The Motor City's second wave unite on Third Wave Audio's inaugural release: Gary Martin of Teknotika Records fame with Sean Deason of Matrix. It's titled 'Race For The Vaccine' and it's a fitting one that's best illustrated by two masters of sonic dystopia. Part A is unlike what we have heard from either producer before, with its loose and off-kilter broken beat/future jazz fusion it definitely sounds more from Jupiter than our humble planet - we can dig it! On the flip, there's the more straight ahead version we were expecting: a deep, slinky and hypnotic excursion in hi-tech soul that makes perfect mood music for the warm up - or closing track - alike.

Eternal Light
Cat: SYST 01296. Rel: 02 Dec 20
  1. Eternal Light (Martin Landsky remix) (6:19)
  2. Eternal Light (remastered) (10:54)
Review: 'Eternal Light' was the B side of 1995's Microwave Prince ?- Vol. 3 on German imprint Le Petit Prince - a right classic for those who know. It also happened to be the first business venture for Klaus Derichs and Marc Romboy - the latter reissuing it here on his established Systematic imprint. Usually associated with the group Rave Allstars, Steffen Mueller-Gaertner struck out on his own here for this deep and evocative acid trance epic - a true zeitgeist of mid '90s German electronic music. It comes with a rework by Poker Flat staple Martin Landsky, who deviates from his usual tech house style to take the track into cavernous and glacial dub techno territory.

Review: S.O.N.S and Pyramid Of Knowledge present their new collaborative endeavour here and set off on a rich techno adventure that draws influxes from a wide sphere of reference. There is rubbery, bounce stuff in the form of 'The Hunter', which barrels along at a high speed and with real funk, while 'Plasma Leak' is a more subliminal, underwater affair, though with more brilliantly drum programming. Things then begin to pick up with the pumping kicks and rugged synth loops of 'Venom' before really cutting loose on the second side of the wax and heading into ancient rituals, tribal grooves and mind melting territory.

All We Have is Now is a Bristol-based label launched earlier this year by Will Clarke, having made big waves already via three successful singles and a collaboration with US house legend Marc Kinchen. Said singles are all included here on this special 12' vinyl sampler, with the tracks being quite a departure from the cheeky, bouncy and bass-driven tracks he first made his name with. From the powerful and uplifting Stateside house sound of 'U Take Me Higher', or the stomping heads-down basement jam 'Hallelujah' through to the roaring peak time banger 'Lord' with a ripping Reese bassline, steely rhythms and gospel vocals in the vein of Robert Hood's Floorplan project.

Doo
Cat: DOO 411. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. Doctors Pepper - "Sgt Pepper" (7:10)
  2. Fashion - "U Mind" (6:33)
  3. Fashion - "Blown" (feat Eggman & DJ Spence) (4:47)
Review: It's an utterly heads down, eyes forward affair that kicks off the new Doo EP. Doctors Pepper is the man on the buttons, and he crafts a perfectly distilled minimal techno groove so deep it almost disappears out of sight. Fashion then steps up with 'U Mind', which is just as barely-there, but with a more eerie lead and icy pads. It's heady tackle to get you in a trance. Last of all, Fashion enlists Eggman & DJ Spence to feature on 'Blown', which is a creeping, stuttering bass tune with cavernous beats and late night mischief in the impish synth spirits.

Review: If you've ever wondered where Italy's obsession with dark, moody, industrial-tinged techno comes from, look no further than this freshly reissued 1991 EP from Leo Anibaldi. Of the six tracks, it's the EP-opening title track that remains the most potent and historic cut, with its blend of hard acid and metallic percussion hits helping to define the Roman style of industrial techno that was further developed and refined by his friend Lory D. That said, there are plenty of treats elsewhere across the EP, from the raw rave stabs and druggy drums of 'Rhythm', and the twisted, breakbeat-driven insanity of 'Bassbar', to the Larry Heard style deep house of 'Universal' and the bleeping, acid-fired brilliance of 'Odissey March'.

Review: A formidable reminder that 2020 hasn't been a complete wash-out, along comes Robert Hood following up his recent EP on Rekids with a brand new album. Three years - and what feels like a lifetime - since his Dekmantel collection Paradygm Shift, where his last LP saw a focused return to his most famous signature of minimal techno, Mirror Man is fully maximal. Digging deep across the spectrum, Hood cooks up a feast that spans emotional score-like beatless pieces ('Through A Looking Glass Darkly'), cloud-leaping, crystalline house music ('Face In The Water'), pranged-out acid that builds and builds without fully letting loose ('Prism') and some of the most wholesome bone-shaking techno he's made in years ('Run Bobby Run', 'Fear Not') As Hood says himself; nothing stops Detroit!
