Dissonant I (4:38)
Dissonant II (7:27)
Dissonant III (6:51)
Dissonant IV (4:13)
Review: Adding yet another record to the pile that has so far been provided by the label A_A, the experimental dub artists behind said outfit (Satoshi Tomiie and Nao Gunji) have really outdone themselves out here. On pink splatter vinyl comes 'Dissonant', one of many EPs to have emerged from the same heads-down studio session that saw to its predecessor, 'Radiant'. Tracks 1-4 lock in a slew of impressive ear-scourings and dub-delayed experimentations, with the first and last tracks particularly blowing us away with their broken beats, which allow for more attention to be paid to every undulation, crackle and knock.

N-Ter - "We Will Emerge" (4:46)
Review: The Spanish Hypnotic Collective label attempts to capture its take on the Detroit Legacy with what looks like a new series of various artists' EP. There is plenty of Motor City soul in the gorgeous synths of Cignol's muted acid and deep house opener 'Distance' which is a soothing and reverential groove, but then its pure party from Barce, Alex Martin offers up 313 style tech and three further tunes on the flip explore blistering electro with high-speed funk and cosmic intent. Mission accomplished and we're already looking forward to the next one.

Water Drop EP Part 3
Cat: MOVIDA 0163. Rel: 22 Dec 23
Franco Cinelli - "Eternal Chant" (13:16)
Neuronal Netwrok - "Basic" (7:37)
Sascha Dive - "FEOS Treatment" (6:03)
Review: The always classy Movida calls upon Franco Cinelli, Neuronal Network and Sasha Dive for this new outing, which takes a deep dive into smooth techno with plenty of healthy Motor City overtones. Cinelli goes first with 'Eternal Chat' which rides on deep and supple drums with deft synths peeling off the groove. Neuronal Network's 'Basic' is a textbook dub techno cut with frosty chord vamps and icy hi-hats over super deep kicks. Last of all, Germany's Sasha Dive brings a little light and playful mood to his 'Foes Treatment' with its shiny leads and more tech house-style grooves.

The Exaltics - "All Of This" (5:34)
Freddie Fresh - "K-64 (Elekt-ro-Funk)" (4:17)
Neil Landstrumm - "Zosey" (4:46)
Umwelt - "Celestial Mechanics" (5:12)
Review: To mark a mighty impressive 20 years of PuZZling records in 2023, the label has put together this heavyweight mix of names for an EP that sounds as good as it looks on marbled vinyl. It's a truly global affair with artists from all over the world and The Exaltics kick off with 'All Of This', a typically rugged slide of electro. From there the quality never dips with Freddie Fresh jacking your body, the legendary Neil Landstrumm bringing his textbook machine madness and Umwelt closing down with 'Celestial Mechanics'. Old school electro, acid and techno heads take note, this is a must-buy.

Fletcher - "It's A Virtue" (7:01)
Mike Schommer - "Kingmaker" (6:06)
Nicolas Barnes - "Sonic Dial" (7:12)
Redrop - "Genesis" (6:34)
Review: Last year's superb Pura Lempuyang album has been pulled apart and served up on a couple of separate 12"s and this is the second one. It comes on limited turquoise vinyl and offers four cuts of stylish deep dub and techno. Fletcher's 'It's A Virtue' goes first with taught, twanging bass and grubby basslines then Mike Schommer's 'Kingmaker' offers liquid dub funk with watery pads and hissing static. Nicolas Barnes picks it up a little with a darker but still warm dub techno roller in 'Sonic Dial' and Redrop's 'Genesis' is the more driving of the lot but again exists right on the ocean floor.

Binary System (7:12)
Arps In Hyperspace (7:19)
Rigil (6:51)
Beyond The Nebula (Holiday In Beta Centauri) (6:06)
Review: "Way back in the 1990s, Mark Hand, Neil Iceton & Jez Nicholl channelled their love of sci-fi-fired Motor City techno into a string of inspired releases under the alias Cubic Space Collective.

After reuniting for a memorable machine jam at Freerotation festival in 2016, Hand & Iceton headed back into the studio for a one-off session and recorded 'Holiday in Beta Centauri', a musical love letter to Mad Mike and the rest of Detroit's most militant futurist techno crew.

Sending us surging skywards via 'Binary System', where lilting lead lines, fizzing electronics and enveloping chords dance atop a snappy, cymbal-heavy drum machine rhythm, before 'Arps in Hyperspace' sees them step things up a notch via layered waves of synths, sparkling melodies and a driving, hyper-speed groove.

The North-East-based twosome then attempt to warm us to the core in the shape of 'Rigil': restless organ stabs, undulating Michigan bass, alien electronics, psychedelic acid lines and Galaxy 2 Galaxy style chords catching the ear. Bringing us gently back down to earth, they complete their deep space mission with 'Beyond The Nebula (Holiday in Beta Centauri)', a bustling electro number full of stabbing analogue bass, star-burst electronics, meditative ambient chords that shimmer full of night-sky melodies.

A fine return to action for this Teesside UR-loving techno twosome... 3,167 miles away in Detroit, their achievement will be noted."

Celebrate The Days

MPEG - "Datetime" (7:29)
Sasha Nevolin - "Tears At Rave" (6:26)
Seo John - "Circuit Of Light" (7:41)
Nvsession - "Endure Love" (4:53)
Review: A rather unique new EP in the straddled modes of trance of breakbeat, 'Celebrate The Days' is the latest V/A from German stalwarts Day By Day, and succeeds in motivating us to do, well, just that. Perfect material for igniting tearful beachside bum-wiggles in far-off global corners, it's evident that these tracks are cut from only the finest production cloth. It's in the name: 'Tear At Rave' by Sasha Nevolin sounds like it's just emerged from some kind of cybernetic waterfall, while B-side intrigues, like Nvsession's 'Endure Love', get at the more flow-static and hypnotic elements of ecstatic dance moments.

Third Wave (5:23)
Ritmos Oscuros (5:57)
Review: Over the past few years Nick Gynn has been whipping up a storm with his loose and limber strain of trance-inflected club melters. Now he's landing in exactly the right spot to kick off 2022 alongside the good folk at EYA Records. Minting their Lonewolf series specifically, the 2000 & Something EP deals in maximal acid wrigglers with a playful but dark-tinted edge which should go down very well with the buoyant wave of psychedelic party people. Watch out for the electro stylings of 'Ritmos Obscuros', which closes out the 12" in body-popping fashion.

Black Soil EP
Cat: DSR C19. Rel: 30 Jun 23
Inlamint (8:05)
Subway (6:05)
Black Soil (7:32)
Argonaut (6:30)
Review: Na Nich is the techno alias for Ukrainian d&b producer Alexander Pavlenko, and after choice drops on Rhythm Buro and Oblique Music and this year's knockout Semantica LP Super Earth, he's making the move to Delsin with more of his dynamic, textured deep techno. 'Inlamint' rests on a steady, throbbing rhythm section which carries an exotic, shimmering sound palette, coming on like trance without the trance, if that makes sense. 'Subway' is a slightly more minimal affair in a percussive sense, but the rich and nuanced synth tones carry the track on their own. 'Black Soil' is a psychoactive cut which has echoes of Rrose and other such textural experts, while 'Argonaut' completes the set with a heavy-lidded backroom excursion rolling at a lower tempo for the bean bag bliss-out crew.

Review: Following up releases by the likes of Mark Seven, Florist and Cygnus, Ari Goldman's Washington D.C-based World Building returns with this awesome varioust artist compilation. Neighborhood Watch Volume One features a wide selection of moods and grooves: NativeSun vs JamesBangura get stuck into some dark dubstep on 'Demon Mode' much like The Khan does later on the deeply meditative 'Part Of Me (Ode To DC), while Sami gets their swing on with the classic house of 'Marty & Jack', Juana's tunneling 'It's Low' gives you a dose of heroin house and over on the flip Max D gets deep down and dirty on 'No Snare'.

Brain-State-In-A-Box (part 1 & 2) (15:42)
Modernite Part III (16:40)
Review: 1990s electronica duo Neural Network - renowned for their contemporaneity with the likes of Biosphere and Autechre - are currently seeing a large reissues campaign by the samaritans at the label Re:discovery. These 'Excerpts' highlight the bulk of their work made from 1993-1997, which, unlike their albums, didn't gain label / distributor traction at the time. Following up part one of the EP series that focuses on the period 1993-1995, these two cuts are the dreamiest cream of that year's ream. 'Brain-State-In-A-Box' is an unusual and almost creepy acid tune perhaps drawing on the 'jokey' presentation of tracks by the likes of AFX or BoC, while 'Modernite Part III' functions as a minimalistic, arpy, electro-bossa-nova reminiscer for deep-sea plungings.

Crimson (17:32)
Review: The work of 1990s German electronic group Neural Network is titularly apt for the times. The mood around public-facing AI like ChatGPT and DALL-E has aroused much anxiety and curiosity of late, and they're only the tip of the iceberg. Surprisingly enough for new listeners, though, they'll find that the work of Neural Network - renowned for their contemporaneity with the likes of Biosphere and Autechre - is serene compared to the current mood of AI furore. These 'Excerpts' highlight the bulk of their work made between 1993-1995, which, unlike their former albums, didn't gain label / distributor traction at the time.

Nexus (6:36)
No Statues (5:00)
Review: During their time as Nexus 21, Altern-8 pair Mark Archer and Chris Peat were given the opportunity to head to Detroit and record with some of their techno heroes, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May included. "Made In Detroit" presents these rare and significant recordings for the first time, offering a suite of tracks that fix UK-style bleep melodies (all the rage in late 1989/early 1990) to the kind of fizzing rhythms, warm bass and futuristic electronics then popular in the Motor City. There are two versions of house-tempo standout "Don't Do It Like That" (one with a whispered lead vocal by Ann Saunderson), while the clanking and metallic "Nexus" and more ghostly "No Statues" accurately fuse the best bits of both British and American techno at the time.

Dazed Dreams (7:48)
Dirty Vision (5:36)
Synthetic Wars (5:41)
Review: 18437 is only four releases deep but is already a revered outlet renowned for its quality output thanks to, in part, a couple of great EPs by the late great Soulphiction. This time out it is Nico Lahs using his NLXLB moniker who takes control with deep, dubby techno for the backroom or late-night hours. The blissful 'Dazed Dreams' is a pad-laced early evening warm-up. 'Dirty Vision' is a little more textured with background drums trying to hurry as lush freeform chords do a slow dance in the foreground. 'Synthetic Wars' gets all squelchy, with hefty, splintered, and wooden drums and hits tumbling in off-grid patterns.

Thibaud Said It's Sharp (6:04)
Review: Heads down, eyes closed and get marching because this is another muscular outing from the Portuguese techno label HAYES. It is a 40th, in fact, so by now the label knows how to unearth the most compelling of sounds and that's just what Norbak serves up here: these are bangers steeped in traditionalism with hulking great drums and layers of percussion and synth texture peeling off as the drums march on. Heavy, hypnotic, and with a dark funk at their core, they're perfect weapons for a wide range of strobe-lit club settings.

Emision (3:20)
Review: Notzing makes his debut on the Spanish label Warm UP here having impressed with several solid EPs before now. This one has already been road-tested around the world by label head Oscar Mulero so it is pretty much guaranteed to make an impact. It is brutally raw and industrial-tinged techno with hard yet intricate, mental and physical details. 'Protae' is the first to make a mark with its rusted loops and unrelenting drums, then 'Fagus' pulls back to more minimal and atmospheric loops full of menace. 'Ekaterin' is a hazy mix of fuzzy frequencies and whacked-out drums and two further cuts layer up intense bass tones and deft synth manipulations. Artful tackle, for sure.

Rebound (7:12)

Hyperbell (5:29)
Dialogue (6:36)
Review: The latest release on TH Tar Hallow finds long-standing techno explorers Nihad Tule and Roseen linking up for a collaborative EP of no-nonsense hardware jams that capture the energy of live techno in its raw essence. Whether these tracks were made on hardware of even jammed out is a moot point - either way they bristle with that energy as the sequences flicker and the effects warp and weave with a hand-wrought energy. There's funk in the bones of 'Rebound' thanks to a tightly-spring swing, while 'Odyssey' tunnels downwards with linear precision. 'Hyperbell' is more of a tense, looping psyche-out, and 'Dialogue' focuses on edgy high frequency bleeps to create its own manic intensity.

Review: The all powerful Drumcode label still does a fine line in big room techno after countless years and even more releases of the stuff. This third part of the A Sides collection brings together a towering selection of names from that scene including Tiger Stripes with the smooth cruise that is 'Altar'. Veterans Pig & Dan vs Gregor Tresher get more intense with frosty loops and dubby hits building a vibe and Wehbba ups the ante with acid daubs and fizzing drums on 'The Next Step.' Review: With releases like Psychedelic Renaissance in their portfolio, you can be sure the Real Interactions label crew are committed to taking your brain for one hell of a ride with their records. The fourth release on the Leeds-based label is a split affair which kicks off with the intriguing pst-trance meets UK bass flex of Toke's 'Random Action'. Nico Lampariello taps into an electro framework while keeping some of those freaky synths on hand for the trance-y vibe hanging over the label. Miles & Josh Law make up 23B, a partnership resulting in moody, dramatic tackle for maximum mind control, while Zuul (Burge) completes the set with the playfully creepy acid cut 'Iloveyou'.

Review: Portugal's HAYES label clocks up a fifth EP here and once again takes us deep into a world of supple but subversive techno. It is a mix of artists who serve up the sounds with VIL's dancey 'Dothejazz' layering minimal synths and drums with potent bass rumbles. Norbak & Temudo then rock you back and forth on your heels as drunken synths evoke and adapt to the icy groove on 'Cloud Seeding.' VIL & Temudo then pair off for the more twisted 'Pampomaniac' and Quelza closes down with 'Arnold,' a whacked-out and skeletal techno rhythm that borrows from early jungle.

Review: Two key pushers of New York tactile ambient-techno, Anthony Naples and DJ Python, here present a fittingly named compilation (and the third in the series) curating only the best found in that style and scene: 'Air Texture VIII'. Spurred on by a cost of living crisis in Manhattan, areas further afield in neighbouring Brooklyn have become much more central to artists such as Beta Librae, Downstairs J and 5AM, spurring their rise and that of producers like them. Don't miss this important chronicling of the scene, which still unfolds in real time.

She then finally came good on all her promise with a debut album that blended bass, techno and plenty of her own cultural heritage. Ali arrived in 2021 but only now lands on wax via Incienso. It's an album that processes personal grief and mourning with melancholic melodies, moody grooves and introspective soundscapes that allow for deep thought processing. At times psyched out, at others manic, and always alluring, it's a real triumph.

Review: Broken Techno / Electronica label Theoretical Rhythms is taking it to the next level with their first vinyl release. Label boss Nickel Eye is honoured with the production duties and come up with a beautiful album which can be described as an audio Sci-Fi poem. Rich textures and pads are present in all tracks giving the album trippiness bringing the listener on a cosmic excursion. Steady broken beats keep the things on a dancier side and the listener can have a dance while watching the stars listening to the album.
Space Child is an album that would work equally well at home on an individual journey as well as on the dance floor where each party goer can take their personal trip.

Review: During the early-to-mid 1990s, Nurmad Jusat released a string of now sought-after singles on Likemind that showcased an emotive, far-sighted take on techno that still sounds timeless all these years on. This fine collection features various recordings he made - but never released - as Nuron and Fuge back in 1993 and '94. As inspired by the techno sounds of his native UK as the far-sighted brilliance of purist Detroit techno and the dreamy soundscapes of Larry Heard, it's a genuinely brilliant collection of long-lost gems. Our picks include the subtly clonk-influenced opener 'The Coded Message', the skewed deep electro shuffle of 'Another Way', the sci-fi techno brilliance of 'Contrapoin (First Version)' and the out-there ambient soundscape that is 'Dialectic Confusion'.

Norm Talley - "Blak Bottom" (unreleased edit)
Norm Talley - "The Flip"
Delano Smith - "The Bassline"
Delano Smith - "Travels 23"
Norm Talley - "ISO Vision"
Delano Smith - "The Drive"
Norm Talley - "Believe It"
Delano Smith - "Remembrance"
Review: Norm Talley returns to his Upstairs Asylum label alongside fellow US house pioneer Delano Smith for Straight Up No Chaser, an eight-track opus featuring four solo cuts each. Talley's gritty, dubbed-out, low-rolling house style is present and correct throughout with the loopy chords of 'Blak Bottom' getting things going, 'The Flip' getting more cavernous and aqueous and 'ISO Vision' leaning into dub techno. 'Believe It' is a soulful deep house looper, while Smith gets bubbly with 'The Bassline', lays down thumping kicks on 'Travels 23' and his trademark synth smears on 'The Drive' while 'Remembrance' is a heady dub house cut that locks you into a state of perfect hypnosis.
