Cat: FS 031. Rel: 02 Nov 15
  1. An Ever
  2. Rrecs
  3. What Is Free
  4. BR56
Review: Finale Sessions is excited about this release from Knoxville, Tennessee artist Alex Falk. He has been on our radar for some time now so we are pleased to share this with you! The A1 track "An Ever" is one of our favorite tracks on the EP, with dreamy pads and monstrous stabs making for a fantastic floor-stomper. Rounding out the A side is "Rrecs", a deep Techno cut with clattering chords and moving drums and claps. B1 track "What Is Free" is another solid peak time killer with thick stabs and cut-up vocals making for a perfect Finale Sessions release. Finally, "BR56" brings up the tempo while chilling out the vibe with dubbed-out chords, nasty filter work and a sound floating somewhere between Techno and House.

Rolling Dutch (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VV 027. Rel: 16 Oct 17
  1. Rolling Dutch
  2. Rave On Plastic
Review: Valcrond Video continues its devilish run of form with this new single from Fallbeil, a project that has previously been spotted on New York Haunted, Return To Disorder and Mannequin. That should give you an idea of the kind of deviant sonics we're dealing with here, skirting around industrial, electro and techno with limber and dirty hardware jams for the sinister dancefloor. "Rolling Dutch" clearly nods towards The Hague way of doing things, all eerie pads, gnarly acid lines and rasping drums, while on the flip side "Rave On Plastic" pushes the bubbling monosynth action to the front of the mix.

Cat: FLXK 11. Rel: 29 May 18
  1. Momentum (7:33)
  2. Out Of Food (5:36)
  3. MSCL (4:25)
Review: Co-creator and co-curator of both Nullpunkt and Hidden Hawaii, Germany's Felix K has been growing in skill and popularity since the late 00s. His imprints, packed full of incredible artists who are all seemingly on a similar wave-length, have done much to take the 'dub-techno' framework onto new and exciting frontiers, often mashing up futuristic forms of drum & bass, stepperz-style. "Momentum" is the special piece, stretching out over the entirety of the A-side, and banging out relentlessly cavernous shards of percussion, looming bass, and an aura made only possible thanks to the right sort of electronics. On the flip, "Out Of Food" is looser, more minimal, and more drone-focussed, whereas "MSCL" is a ritualistic ode to techno, carried by a 4/4 swing but launched into the airwaves by Felix K's trademark engineering. Heavy.

  1. Jason Fine - "Puttin It Out" (A Made Up Sound remix)
  2. Jason Fine - "Human Need" (Heinrich Mueller Celestial Sphere mix)
Review: Repress: As one of the younger breed of Detroit talents, Jason Fine is still just starting to get a foothold, despite having a good few years of releases behind him. His Kontra Musik relationship has proven to be the most fruitful, and this remix package capitalises on that with two top shelf commissions. A Made Up Sound brings his unmistakable broken house swing to bear, with warming subs and thick swathes of pad and melody twisted to Dave Huismann's crafty designs. Heinrich Muller brings the Drexciyan vibes in abundance with his punchy electro stance that remains peerless after all these years.

Elastic Collisions EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ORSON 018. Rel: 30 Sep 19
  1. Elastic Collisions (4:26)
  2. Octodecillion (7:05)
  3. Probabilities (7:06)
  4. Mechanomics (6:05)
Review: Unstoppable electro machine Carl Finlow (aka Silicon Scally) lands on Orson with more of that impeccable robo-funk he's so revered for. "Elastic Collisions" leads the charge with a tough and teasing workout that works around a heavy low end and plenty of sparkling sound design up top. "Octodecillion" keeps things on a dystopian tip, where a bleak future sounds as funky as it does ominous. "Probabilities" heads into a less floor-focused space where thick layers of buffed and polished synth wriggles collide in high-definition. "Mechanomics" completes the set with another taut belter geared towards the heads down section of the party.

Floorplan V Mark Broom (white vinyl 12")
EPM
Cat: EPM 20V. Rel: 20 Feb 19
  1. Floorplan - "Never Grow Old" (Mark Broom dubplate mix) (5:38)
  2. Mark Broom - "Jungle" (5:21)
  3. Floorplan - "He Can Save You" (Re-Plant) (8:53)
Review: Some tip-top Transatlantic business here, as EPM Music brings together Motor City legend Robert Hood AKA Floorplan, and veteran UK techno producer Mark Broom. There's a treat on side A as Broom finally allows us access to one of his secret weapons: a previously dubplate-only remix he did of the Floorplan gospel-techno throbber "Never Grow Old". Broom's version is tough and percussive, but also makes great use of rumbling bass, restless organ stabs and glassy-eyed late night rave riffs. Broom's own techno jack-track "Jungle" - a blizzard of distorted percussion and wild electronic noises - opens side B, before Hood offers up a chunky "Re-Plant" of classic Floorplan roller "He Can Save You". It not only features spoken word preacher-man vocals, but also a mind-altering riff reminiscent of Lil' Louis classic "French Kiss".

  3. Verschiebung 3 (5:08)
  4. Verschiebung 4 (3:45)
Review: 2016 marks two decades since Roman Flugel made his debut. It says much about the productive, genre-straddling German that he retains the desire to do things differently after all these years. Verscheibung is his first EP of 2016, and arrives for the rather fine Die Orakel label overseen by LARJ's Oliver Hafenbauer. The four tracks are split between stripped-back techno and druggy, off-piste ambient (the bubbly, post-party weirdness of closer "Track 4"). The most obviously floor-friendly cut opens the EP, with Flugel layering wonky, minor key melody lines over a dense but minimalist groove. Elsewhere, check the Villalobos-ish strangeness of "Track 3", and the druggy, pitched-down experimental throb of "Track 2".

  1. Un (7:51)
  2. Wait (6:08)
  3. Reshape (7:21)
  4. Functional (6:48)
Review: Over the course of his short career to date, Forest Drive West producer Joe Baker has developed a trademark sound that gleefully mixes and mangles elements of techno, post-dubstep bass music and vintage jungle. That trademark sound is naturally at the heart of the producer's first outing on Neighbourhood, from the smooth, spacey and slightly creepy hypnotism of opener "Un", to the deep space electronics and jazzy, off-kilter rhythms of EP highlight "Reshape". It can be heard, too, on the locked-in peak-time techno of 12" closer "Functional" and within the delay-laden blacksmith's percussion hits, moody bass and body-jacking kick-drum beat of the mind-altering "Wait". Supported by Etapp Kyle, Sigha, Ben Sims, JP Enfant - this will go fast, don't wait!

Techno Soul Vol 1 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DW 0013. Rel: 23 Jul 18
  1. Give It Up For My DJ
  2. Love Works
Review: Eddie Fowlkes is one of Detroit's finest, still working doggedly to push his own distinct spin on the Motor City sound. He's taking no prisoners on this latest 12" on his own Detroit Wax label, bringing a tough and righteous rhythm to the foreground on "Give It Up For My DJ" with some of those head-spinning melodic flourishes that are his trademark. "Love Works" is a crooked groover that piles the bass on generously and keeps the swing up high - if this one doesn't get bodies jerking then nothing will. No-one does it quite like Fowlkes, and he's on impeccable form here.

Cat: GFEP 05. Rel: 21 Oct 19
  1. Starter Pack (8:51)
  2. Congestion (6:18)
  3. Bruhn Agitation (6:21)
Review: Swedish outliers Frak have been on rampant form recently, channelling their 30-plus years of machine battering into material that stands up to demands of the contemporary scene with ease. "Starter Pack" is a muscular workout with a choice selection of gnarly synth lines, while "Congestion" has some wiggly filter sweeping and the off-kilter acid freakery you'd expect from the Scandinavian techno heroes. "Bruhn Agitation" takes things slower and meaner, leading you into a dungeon of deviant techno delights. Totally workable and yet still undeniably different, Frak continue to be a treasure for those who like their machine music rugged and raw.

  3. Astrea - "Sere Di Marzo" (Seismal D remix) (7:20)
  4. Burden & DLTN - "TKY" (4:59)
Review: Riot (Revolutionary Idea On Time) is a young and independent electronic music label founded and managed by F.Fava (Frankyeffe). The musical style of their releases is mainly techno - based on quality sounds involving rhythms and soft material. They declare that it's for 'listening rather than dancing.' That being said, on the Limited V2 various artists compilation, you are treated to a banger of a track by the label head honcho himself in the form of "Motorway" - a steely and functional cut in the vein of the Drumcode sound, Edone's brooding "Firm" makes use of intricate melodic structures that would make even Stephan Bodzin stand up and notice, while the snarling and broken techno assault "TKY" by Burden & DLTN is reminiscent of Force & From era Surgeon.
