  4. Unovidual & Tara Cross - "Imponative" (3:28)
Review: Thanks to the eternally revered Minimal Wave imprint, out of NYC, Mark Phillips and Robert Lawrence's Five Times Of Dust project is going through a bit of a revival. The duo had first released some post-punk cassettes back in the 80s, and they clearly have not been forgotten. On this new remix EP, "Computer Bank" is given a makeover in the form of a The Floor remix, who proceeds to add all sorts of quirkiness over the tune's tough, heavy bass and driving rhythm; "Armoured Car" breaks the 4/4 in favour of something much closer to the band's original drum machine style. Once again, on the flip, we have a remix of "Like I Am, Comme Je Suis" by The Floor, who throws up a gnarly electro bass onto shady, neo-romantic vocals, and the whole things is finished off by "Imponative" from Unovodual and Tara Cross, who produce a slow, heady industrial groove for the dancefloor.

Review: Fleck E.S.C has been doggedly flaunting his wares in the electronic underground for some time, with a mammoth back catalogue of robotic machine soul across low key digital labels as well as the likes of Electrix and Central Processing Unit. Now he glides over to Untitled Recs with some especially dynamic cuts that balance tricksy programming and the rudeness of electro funk with a more fluttering electronica sensibility that's heavy on emotion. Just check "Free Play" with its gorgeous interplay of varying synth tones locked into a melodious funk. There's a variety in grooves to be enjoyed here too, including the stepping stutter of "Skins & Scales" and the fractured patterns of the title track.

  2. Mark Broom - "Jungle" (5:21)
  3. Floorplan - "He Can Save You" (Re-Plant) (8:53)
Review: Some tip-top Transatlantic business here, as EPM Music brings together Motor City legend Robert Hood AKA Floorplan, and veteran UK techno producer Mark Broom. There's a treat on side A as Broom finally allows us access to one of his secret weapons: a previously dubplate-only remix he did of the Floorplan gospel-techno throbber "Never Grow Old". Broom's version is tough and percussive, but also makes great use of rumbling bass, restless organ stabs and glassy-eyed late night rave riffs. Broom's own techno jack-track "Jungle" - a blizzard of distorted percussion and wild electronic noises - opens side B, before Hood offers up a chunky "Re-Plant" of classic Floorplan roller "He Can Save You". It not only features spoken word preacher-man vocals, but also a mind-altering riff reminiscent of Lil' Louis classic "French Kiss".

Review: To give you an abridged version of its press release, the second edition of Spain's TerraFirm states that they have a full range of services to return your planet to its naturally thriving, pre-apocalypse state. Detroit via Seattle's Terry Hawkins serves up his third release here, following up some great EPs for Argot, Crisis Urbana and Vanity Press. Featuring the sci-fi funk of "Crushed Blue M-Bag", the celestial FM tones of "Dematerialize" reminiscent of the breath-taking electronica of Peacefrog's early days, and the breakbeat-driven early '90s rave throwbacks on the B side "Melon Squabbles" and "Wavestation". All killer, no filler!

  4. Ontal - "Track 4" (7:04)
Review: Current heroes of the industrial techno sound here tend to focus on the industrial side of things for The Cast Project: a vinyl affair from Los Angeles based on the collective sounds from a faction of artists. They are said to gather a few artists; each of them providing several unique audio samples, clips and/or field recordings that best define their sound. They then collect the samples from each artist and redistribute them to the artists as a master pack, at which point they create a unique track. First up fellow Los Angeleno Luis Flores delivers the grinding and guttural first offering, while 138 then delivers some impressive Autechre styled IDM on his/her effort. On the flip, Dutch terroriser Bas Mooy delivers a furious and powerful warehouse techno stormer that blows the doors off as always. Finally Serbian duo Ontal deliver some more of their typically contorted takes on techno.

Review: As a staunch representative of Midwest techno since the mid-nineties, Fanon Flowers has always skirted on the periphery of the scene rather than getting placed on the pedestal many of his neighbours do, but this return to UK's Sect Records sees a further widening of his reach, with this particular record embracing his dub techno side with a cavernous chord deployment and plenty of metallic hits. Substance is on deadly form for the remix, trimming said chord down to a fine point and adding some welcome funk into the arrangement to a thoroughly engrossing end.

  2. In Your Wardrobe (part 2) (8:15)
Review: For its 15th year anniversary, Mule Musiq will release twelve 12" by close artists, with collectable artwork by Stefan Marx. The seventh edition presented here is by the label's 'hero' Roman Flugel, who presents his debut single for the label. Quite possibly named after the legendary producer's hometown, "Fun Fort" sees the man from Frankfurt deliver two emotive and hypnotic journeys on this two tracker: the title track on the A side transmits some seriously good vibes with its bouncy bassline and catchy blips and bleeps, plus an infectious shuffle throughout. On the flip, he goes further down the spiral on the moody dub techno excursion of "In Your Wardrobe (Part 2)" where long, drawn out dub chords lurk beneath some dusty late night jazz bar sounds.

Review: 2016 marks two decades since Roman Flugel made his debut. It says much about the productive, genre-straddling German that he retains the desire to do things differently after all these years. Verscheibung is his first EP of 2016, and arrives for the rather fine Die Orakel label overseen by LARJ's Oliver Hafenbauer. The four tracks are split between stripped-back techno and druggy, off-piste ambient (the bubbly, post-party weirdness of closer "Track 4"). The most obviously floor-friendly cut opens the EP, with Flugel layering wonky, minor key melody lines over a dense but minimalist groove. Elsewhere, check the Villalobos-ish strangeness of "Track 3", and the druggy, pitched-down experimental throb of "Track 2".

Review: Lustwerk Music presents a mysterious new entity known simply as The Fock. With little to no background information, this record stakes its own claim within the Galcher-verse by offering up a range of mixes of "Shat Pop." The "Saldes Mix" is a proper immersion heater of cerebral techno, while the nervy, stomping "Flood1 Remix" is credited to White Material regular Young Male. The "Electro Mix" has a squelchy, boogie-inflected palette offset by woozy atmospherics, and the "Ambient Mix" unsurprisingly does away with the drums and drifts in limbo with a disembodied tannoy announcement for company.

Review: Over the course of his short career to date, Forest Drive West producer Joe Baker has developed a trademark sound that gleefully mixes and mangles elements of techno, post-dubstep bass music and vintage jungle. That trademark sound is naturally at the heart of the producer's first outing on Neighbourhood, from the smooth, spacey and slightly creepy hypnotism of opener "Un", to the deep space electronics and jazzy, off-kilter rhythms of EP highlight "Reshape". It can be heard, too, on the locked-in peak-time techno of 12" closer "Functional" and within the delay-laden blacksmith's percussion hits, moody bass and body-jacking kick-drum beat of the mind-altering "Wait". Supported by Etapp Kyle, Sigha, Ben Sims, JP Enfant - this will go fast, don't wait!

Review: The Peer Pressure EP from the under-rated Mark Forshaw finds Scenery Records once again highlighting the rich strain of local production talent in the Liverpool area. Involved in the Merseyside scene since the '90s, Forshaw has released on labels like Mathematics, Tabernacle and Apartment and is also a member of Phantom Planet Outlaws with John Heckle and Binny. If you've checked Forshaw's prior output you will be happy with Peer Pressure as soon as the grubby, jacked up house of the title track hits its groove, with his four other cuts heading down a similarly unpredictable path. Kudos to Scenery for seeking out Swedish producer Daniel Andreasson to remix the title track too! This is another no nonsense EP from Scenery that is lovably rugged and unpredictably creative.

  3. Witch Hazel (Nomadico remix) (5:53)
  4. Crossing The Boundary (7:27)
Review: A new aDepth audio record featuring Canadian Rennie Foster, including a remix of Nomadico (DJ Dex/Underground Resistance).
The title track Witch Hazel is a 9 minute long track with no breakdown and a minimal approach to arrangement, with organic elements cycling in and out subtly rather than obviously beginning and ending. A rolling half time, tribal groove drives the power of the track with a haunting vocal sample and layers of percussion creating a heady, polyrhythmic hypnosis on the dance floor. Not since Rennie's well known Devil's Water has he presented such an overtly occult offering as this extremely finely crafted EP, and this song represents the initial seduction of the record to the listener very effectively.
The second track, Navigator, is a drum machine driven workout, again with a polyrhythmic and tribal vibe, this time drenched in a rich, holographic pad that morphs and moves in unexpected ways. Minimalistic in presentation, this track is bass heavy and functional for the DJ, yet artistic and emotional.
The Nomadico remix by DJ Dex of Underground Resistance takes the elements of Witch Hazel and re-constructs them in a futuristic style with a more driving kick and molten Detroit attitude. A heavier techno approach to the piece, but still intact is the melancholic atmosphere of the original and siren song of the vocal sample. This mix includes a dramatic breakdown and unique arrangement familiar to fans of Nomadico's awesome Yaxteq label.
The last track on the EP is called Crossing The Boundary is possibly the only track in this style to sample distorted vocals usually associated with black metal, making this a very unique, perhaps polarizing, experiment in sound. Evocative of the desolation of deep space and suggestive of sonic dark matter. This track combines Rennie's singular approach to dub techno with ambient and drone music and the result is like nothing else currently in existence.

  1. Give It Up For My DJ
  2. Love Works
Review: Eddie Fowlkes is one of Detroit's finest, still working doggedly to push his own distinct spin on the Motor City sound. He's taking no prisoners on this latest 12" on his own Detroit Wax label, bringing a tough and righteous rhythm to the foreground on "Give It Up For My DJ" with some of those head-spinning melodic flourishes that are his trademark. "Love Works" is a crooked groover that piles the bass on generously and keeps the swing up high - if this one doesn't get bodies jerking then nothing will. No-one does it quite like Fowlkes, and he's on impeccable form here.

Review: Eddie Fowlkes is back on his Detroit Wax label with more forthright jams that show off his distinctive approach to techno. As one of the originators of the sound, it's only logical he knows how to do this stuff properly. "Route 88" is a seductive, muscular piece with bold lead lines and a constant, driving rhythm section, while "Pass The Butter" takes a deeper route without losing the finely balanced and rich arrangement approach that his sound is built on. This is fully realised, classily executed Motor City machine soul from a man who helped define the culture.
