Review: Tunnie Smith was born to sing, and 'Dancing On Da Clouds' is the biggest belting under his belt. Handpicked by his pastor in the early 1970s, this lesser-known golden child soon found himself touring every corner of his home state of Louisiana. His first record deal followed, which led to a slew of promised releases and shelvings, rises and falls. 10 years later, a chance meeting with producer George 'Paco' Patterson helped catapult Smith to indie stardom, and his relatively underground status helped foster the uniquely atmospheric mood of these two devotional pieces. They somehow straddle the rapture of soul and the later washiness of dream pop; a strangely beautiful release.

Review: St Paul's Catholic Church in Louisiana was hosting a summer youth program in 1970 and 1971 and it was there that Tunnie Smith was spotted by Father George Artist, who saw potential in his great singing abilities. Smith was introduced to local musicians and bands as a result and was soon playing the local circuit. He landed a record label 18 months later and his first single came in 1973. Success followed as did an album that never actually got roasted. It was then in 1983 that he laid down the slow-burning mid-tempo soul numbers which feature in this 7" for the first time.

This one has a concept that finds the beatmaker drawing solely on gospel samples from his own personal record collection. Review: Floridian musician Tedi Robinson specialises in what he calls "mellowfunkism" - a smooth, colourful, Prince-influenced take on retro-futurist soul that various draws inspiration from jazz-funk, '80s groove, contemporary R&B and P-funk. It's this attractive, effortlessly soulful trademark sound that's showcased on Robinson's second Six Nine Music "45" as Son of Pearl. Robinson's dazzling bass and smooth vocals take pride of place on A-side 'Wonderful', alongside head-nodding, hip-hop style beats, glistening guitars and twinkling electric piano sounds. Over on the reverse, 'The Other Side of Nowhere' boasts all manner of kaleidoscopic, P-funk-influenced synth sounds, crunchy R&B drums and more elastic bass courtesy of Robinson, whose vocals are once again superb.

They released a number of albums with Fabio at the centre and wowed fans and critics alike around the world. The baritone male vocal is impossibly warm and smoking as it effortlessly delivers lines about the building love between new partners. Review: Outta Sight's latest monthly rare soul missive contains hard-to-find and overlooked classics from "hard-hitting" New Jersey vocal group Soul Brothers Six and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues man Willie Tee. It's the former's wonderfully sweet and loose "I'll Be Loving You" (first released in 1966, fact fans) that takes pride of place on the A-side, serving up a lightly sauteed soul take on the rhythm and blues template. Willie Tee's 1967 jam "Walking Up A One Way Street", a summery affair blessed with a superb horn section, leisurely groove and brilliant lead vocal from the man himself, can be found on the B-side.

Review: UK Northern soul-food wholesalers Kent Dance are experts in procuring and supplying and continue to stick their necks out in this regard with a brand new reissue of The Soul Children's 'Standing In The Safety Zone', backed up by Sylvia And The Blue Jays' 'Put Me In The Mood' on the flip. The former track is an androgyne vocal soul, car-stereo'ed burst of joy, on which, despite the overarching feel of ecstasy, we hear duetting singers Anita Louis' and John Colbert's lyrics sing of remaining in one's comfort zone, which depending on the interpretation could either be heard as sardonic or earnest. Sylvia and co.'s B-side sounds as great as ever, being the breathy, flirtatious number it always was, yet with its best elements fleshed out ever-further by this 7" pressing.

Review: Long-serving New Orleans soul man Willie West has previous form when it comes to collaborating with The Soul Investigators, Finland's funkiest backing band. He's joined forces with them plenty of times over the years, though this is their first joint release for nearly two years. "I Just Can't Leave You Alone" is particularly sweet, with West's heart-felt vocal combining brilliantly with guest Jimi Tenor's drifting flute lines and the band's rich jazz guitars, fuzzy grooves and '60s style production. The sublime quality of their playing and production is even clearer on the accompanying Instrumental take.

Review: There is very little if any information out there about The Soul Sensations, a group of musicians active in the 60s. They recorded for Phil Gaber at his famous studio and one of their standouts was the heavy, frantic 'Baby I Love Part 1' which is here pressed up as part of a limited run of 500 singles. It's all big horns, rumbling rhythms and raw instrumental funk. The fantastic flip side features 'Part 2' which is only available on the MD release and frankly you need both versions in order to ensure maximum dance floor destruction.

Review: Soul Sugar's signature, fruitful blend of reggae and soul once more oozes forth with 'Top Of My List'. Featuring the vocals of Shniece McMenamin, the track is a liquefyingly dreamy song, unhesitatingly letting in the sunny rays of rocksteady through the Venetians. But in contrast to the mood, it also tells the dubious story of our protagonist placing their self-respect and self-love in the hands of a former lover, with social-fabric-tearing consequences, a funk from which McMenamin sings to help pick up the pieces. The dub version helps; it's a refractive and soft version, emphasising more atmosphere than hardness or forward propulsion.

Review: Not to be confused with the independent funk and soul exhumers Strut Records, who were acquired by the !K7 monopoly in 2008, Strut Records (here recorded as Strutt) was a short-lived North Carolinian, now apparently resurrected, record label active in the early 1970s and exclusively dedicated to the work of the band the Soulfull Strutters. The Fayetteville octet drove a rousing bargain with the soul stomper 'Let Your Feelings Go', indeed seeming to incite the mass-reflexive impulse buy (and with no remorse) by entreating the listener to abandon all emotional valence and make a kind of Kierkegaardian leap of faith - not only into the void of love, but into a commitment to dancing and dancing well, as well as into copping the record. Review: Izipho Soul once again link up with Sound of Superbad here on a super smooth and seductive funk 7". This one raises the bar even in comparison to the super nice 'I Want Cha' last time out. Chicago-based singer extraordinaire Robert IMtume Owens is the man who offers up his beautifully buttery tones, which are layered over nice classy drums and warm synths, with trumpets and strings all adding ear golden texture. The 'S.O.S. Vibe Mix' on the flip is a heavier jam thanks to the more direct percussion, but with everything else also turned up it's still a super lush tune with those vocals doing plenty of great work.

Review: DC based imprint Peoples Potential Unlimited have really cornered the market in highly collectable reissued boogie funk rarities in 2010 and end the year on a high note with the three vocal cuts lifted from Real Love, a mid 80s mini album from Michael Soward that mixes new gospel dynamics and heavy synthesiser funk. Dam Funk fans will delight in the vintage sounds spread across this dinky 45 with the dusted groove of "He's Alive" particularly impressive.

Review: Spirit's impossible-to-find 1979 debut album "Put Your Hands Together" has long been a favourite of those dusty-fingered crate diggers who love gospel soul, funk and disco. Here Rain & Shine offer a chance to own the album's standout moment, 12 minute opener "Spirit", for a fraction of the cost of the album. It's an absolute stunner - a busy, energetic gospel-soul/gospel-disco hybrid that simply increases in intensity throughout (with no small thanks to some killer organ solos). Review: Colemine Records has devoted itself to releasing top notch soul music for close to 20 years now. Those who follow the label closely trust the purveyor of the label (Terry Cole) enough to blindly pick up each and almost every release. The label's knack for finding and sharing some of the best versions of soul music is clearly evident from the latest by a group called The Splendids. Originally recorded in 1961, these two songs were destined to launch this talented ensemble. Two things' happened in 1962 though. Beatles music made Doo-Wop almost irrelevant overnight. In addition, members of the group got called into Vietnam. 63 years later after originally forming, the surviving three of the five members recording once again. The result is phenomenal and makes us feel like we are back in the 1950s. Only 500 copies in total have been pressed.
