Best Outta You (3:49)
Ain't That Loving You (4:46)
Review: Owing to his undeniable skills as a belter, Roland Johnson's honourable title is the 'Elder Statesman of Saint Louis Soul'. Testifying for this comes a new 7" single from the 71-year-old soul legend. The A-side, 'Best Outta You', brings uptempo joy to a duetting ballad of mutual love and limerence, while 'Ain't That Loving You' rides the comedown, being a comparatively relaxed slow jam charting the blissful feeling of settling down with your soulmate. Backing up Johnson comes the instrumental talents of Kevin O'Connor and Paul Niehaus IV.

Review: Cherrystones returns with the second of the "Aged" EPs for Emotional Response. Time propels and so does sound, thus orbiting nuances and motion leads us here, to present whatever maybe or interpreted as. Since the acclaimed Aged Of Bronze EP a symbiotic progress of craft arrives in the aptly titled Aged Of Silver. Again each track is like a coded syntax, unlocking the puzzle to aid a listeners journey and experience, building blocks to a utopian scape in form without form notes and pictures living and residing in the dimensions.

Never pandering to trends, his art based on immediacy and the moment, no disposable sub genres that fade as fast as they emerge, transposing and emitting heard and unheard a way to communicate with himself and those that identify.

A capsule of touched emotions bearing gifts for those in the present and wishing to be present, a key with keys analogue for Silver Tongues and Brass monkeys living in the shadow of a Scorpian's Tail.

Review: Remastered on vinyl for the first time since 1980, Kano's eponymous album is given a new life through limited edition and hand-numbered vinyl. Italian production duo Stefano Pulga and Luciano Ninzatti are considered pioneers of Italo by many, with their sound serving as a bridge to electro and breakdance later in the 1980s. Features dancefloor hits such as 'It's A War' and its instantly recognisable hook, the neon-lit night drive of 'Cosmic Voyager' and another golden oldie in the form of 'I'm Ready' with its funky vocoded goodness . This one is a new must have for disco lovers.

Review: This week on Bordello A Parigi we have a release originally from 1983 on Cinofilm Produzione. Berlin-based, Italian producer Armonics (Slow Motion) came across the 'Radio' 7? by coincidence in 2020 near his home in Southern Italy. Vito Lisco wrote and produced the track together with Renzo Maria La Costa back in the 80's in a basement. The original track has been revised with the vocal parts re-recorded, plus some added guitar riffs and remixed for a modern take on this eccentric Italo production by Evolution (L&L). Review: The recent Tokyo Dreaming compilation on Wewantsounds was a huge success so the label does the right thing and follows it up with another collection of sounds from the Far East. This one again looks into the fascinatingly niche city pop sound with expert digger DJ Notoya at the wheels. He delves into the Nippon Columbia catalogue and turns out all manner of breezy and laidback gems from Hiroshi Sato, Hitomi "Penny" Tohyama, Midori Hara and more. In many cases, these tunes are making it tot vinyl for the first time. What's more, the audio has been newly remastered in Tokyo for this reissue making sure it sounds as good as possible.

I'm Housin (instrumental) (4:17)
Review: Although it was originally released at the height of hip-house mania (1988 to be exact), EPMD's 'I'm Housin' is not a rap-sporting house record. It is, though, a bona-fide club classic, with E Double E and PMD trading verses atop a rolling, dancefloor-friendly groove built from elements of Aretha Franklin's 1971 soul classic 'Rock Steady'. All these years on, it still sounds fresh - as this Mr Bongo reissue of the rare 1989 UK seven-inch version proves. In a word: essential.

You're A Customer (5:22)
Review: Mr Bongo has already reissued a swathe of classic albums and singles from legendary hip-hop duo EPMD, whose place in the pantheon of rap greats has long been assured. Here they continue to mine the duo's catalogue, delivering a new edition of the pair's 1987 debut single (which, it should be noted, has long been hard to find on "45"). 'It's My Thing' remains a classic hip-hop club cut, with flowing rhymes rising above a backing track rich in raw drum machine hits, aquatic p-funk bass and sampled snatches of a smooth, disco-era soul number. Flipside 'You're a Customer' is a more sparse and stripped back affair, with slightly faster-paced raps riding stuttering beats and a squelchy synth bassline.

Review: A 7" is all about having a perfect nugget of music on the most compact of wax, and here Mr Bongo pick out two of the best cuts from one of the greatest crews to touch the mic. EPMD were on their finest form when they dropped Unfinished Business in 1989, doubling down on the runaway success of their debut Strictly Business, and here we get two of the album's hottest joints for your instant gratification. 'The Big Payback' piles the funk on heavy, keeping it moody in the low end for EPMD to do their thing over the top, while original opening track 'So Wat Cha Sayin' nestles on the B side with one of the wildest rub downs Erick and Parrish ever committed to record. Truly essential hip hop from the golden era.

We don't expect these to hang around in stock too long, in part because it's one of the most consistently on-point and musically expansive sets in Tatham's vast catalogue - and that's saying something. For proof, check the soulful bruk-up business of 'To My Surprise' (reminiscent of the best of the collective Bugz in the Attic project he was a big part of), the fluid, spiritual jazz-funk brilliance of opener 'Don't Hide Your Love' and the expansive, up-tempo excellence of 'Organic Juggernaut', where fluttering flutes, squelchy bass and sparkling pianos catch the ear.

Review: Since first joining forces in 2017, Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat have released some of the most magical albums of recent times - sets that cannily combine their mutual love of pastoral music, jazz-funk, library jazz, soundtracks and heady downtempo grooves. The Upturned Glass, the pair's sixth collaborative full-length, is another genuine gem. Highlights come thick and fast, from the skewed, lo-fi jazz-funk warmth of 'Pool In The Rose' and the string-drenched beauty of opener '6,000 Drunks Clinging to a Landslip' (an amusing title for a genuinely moving track), to the chiming, low-slung brilliance of the two-part title track and the emotive, slow-motion ambient-folk beauty of 'Evening Song'.

The Mancunian channels the raw, analogue-rich heaviness of his early work throughout the EP, which sees him skip between twisted, cunningly swung, acid-fired heaviness ('Old Skool'), pleasingly metallic blends of electro, clonk and house ('Sugoi'), trippy and hypnotic early morning mysticism (the Berlin-friendly haziness of 'Flash Fight') and chunky, funk-tinged tech-house (the 'is it heavyweight house or light-touch techno' of 'False Religion', where Gerald makes a rare appearance on the mic).

It features four of his freshest tunes to date and if the title is anything to go by it could be the start of a fine new series. Things start all sensuous on 'Let's Stay Together' before the stylish cosmic disco Rhdoes and smooth grooves of 'Don't Give Up (I Believe In You)' and breezy, hip swing charms of 'Pleasure' make a great impression. As plays, these are tunes theatre packed with funky drum programming and never is that more clear than in opener 'Julia' which glides along without any sense of friction as impassioned vocal cries peel off the groove. Review: Only a year after concluding his ambitious 'Man On The Moon' trilogy, Kid Cudi is already reissuing the third and final instalment in the saga, 'The Chosen', in 2xLP format. Demonstrating the artist's bold sidestep into cloud rap (as opposed to stark classics like 'Day N Nite'), this album contains slow-chugging dreamers like 'Mr. Solo Dolo III' and playful gut-bouncers a-la 'Tequila Shots', spanning collabs with Trippie Redd, Skepta, Pop Smoke and folk pop sensation Phoebe Bridgers. For those invested in Kudi's artistic progression, this is a concept album finding the rapper in an internal struggle against his evil alter-ego, Mr. Rager - whether Cudi prevails is up to the listener's interpretation.

'Casino' compiled their greatest hits on CD format at the time - including 'Transmetropolis', a Haddaway-sampling slice of robotic fun, and their first single 'Shine On', an equally kitsch new age trip hop ballad showing off the trio's high-end vision of sonic urbanity. Review: Diego Strausz's first outing on Razor N Tape, a seven-inch single released in January 2021, was a thrillingly vibrant and hard-to-pigeonhole affair, with the Brazilian joining the dots between Batacuda, Brazilian disco, boogie and deep jazz-funk. This belated follow-up features superb, never-before-heard extended versions of those two tracks: the Azymuth-esque drums-synths-and-percussion explosion that is 'Emancipacao' and '50 Anos Em 5', a TB-303 acid-sporting slab of Latin jazz-fusion with bonus spacey synths. Perhaps the package's most notable moment though is Ron Trent's inspired remix of the title track, which in typical fashion sees the legendary deep house producer add extra layers of musicality, sun-kissed positivity and plenty of killer house-not-house beats.

Earth Mirror marks Layla and Phil Legard's second album for the Ba Da Bing! label out of NYC after 2018's Red Goddess (Of This Men Shall Know Nothing). Weaving a compelling mixture of low, murmuring industrial tones and pastoral folk with an occult twist, the duo move through enveloping, atmospheric spaces. At times Layla Legard's voice cuts through the mist, and elsewhere we reside in instrumental pastures, but the mood remains haunting and evocative from start to finish, not to mention masterfully rendered.

The cool jazz maestro and visionary American soul jazz vibraphonist had already put two albums at that point but Spider Man is his most revered. This lead tune is a beguiling and shuffling Latin rhythm with dancing keys and busy percussive layers insisting that you move your ass. On the backside is 'Soul Yogi' which actually sounds something like his take on Northern Soul. It's an uptempo, string-driven head spinner for sure.

Originally released in 1977, the timeless slice of uptempo disco funk was a mighty meeting of minds - any track penned by Ashford & Simpson is set for iconic status, and with Sylvester up front it's even more of a sure thing. Quite simply eternal. Of course, Sylvester's most famous collaborator was Patrick Cowley, whose magic touch is all over the wriggling, brooding synth boogie of 'I Need Somebody To Love Tonight', presented here as a compact 7" edit for a short sharp blast of perfection.

Review: Last October, acclaimed saxophonist Pharoah Sanders turned 80 years young, and his input on this album is testimony to the fact he has clearly aged like a fine wine. Not that this is to suggest preceding outings were anything less worthy than this collaborative project, which sees Sam Shepherd, the British electronic artist better known to most as Floating Points, write nine spectacular arrangements which are then performed by said brass legend, alongside The London Symphony Orchestra.

The results are spectacular, and wildly far-reaching, albeit firmly rooted in jazz with classical undertones. From the movements that made this final cut, some are whisper quiet and delicate to the point of risking breaking off if you were handling haphazardly. Others are booming loud, musical jumbo jets landing at the end of another great crescendo. Whether hushed or monumental, though, we can feel every note and bar of this masterpiece.

Review: Mr Bongo's EPMD reissue series continues with a fresh pressing of one of the NYC duo's most significant and best-loved singles, 1988's 'You Gots To Chill'. Predating much of the West Coast G-funk material that later covered similar sonic ground, it sees the duo delivering some of their rap verses over a beat crafted from samples of Zapp's P-funk classic 'More Bounce To The Ounce' and Kool & The Gang party classic 'Jungle Boogie'. This time round, it comes backed by another EPMD classic from the same period: the mid-tempo, JB's-sampling head-nodder that is 'Let The Funk Flow'. That's never appeared on a single before, making this "45" even more desirable.

Review: Astonishingly, almost 20 years has now passed since Chelonis R Jones showcased the emotional potential of tech-house via his effortlessly soulful single 'I Don't Know'. It was a huge underground smash at the time and has returned to stores sporadically ever since. This reissue, which is part of Get Physical's Classics series of 12" singles, backs his superb original mix (track four) with a more thickset (but nevertheless sonically starry) 2012 rework by Butch and two previously unheard revisions. Oscar L's tweak is insanely bass-heavy and foreboding, while Matthew Herbert's rub reimagines the track as a loose-limbed chunk of micro-house/deep house fusion that only emphasizes the soulfulness of Jones' lead vocal.

Review: Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy's debut album Mam Yinne Wa was a real triumph. A sensuous fusion of international rhythms, gospel vocals and jubilant vibes that was an instant hit with lovers of world music. His new single is said to be a teaser for a seance upcoming album and is another masterpiece from Frafra Gospe, a legend of this genre. First up is 'Doose Mam,' a repetitive rhythm that goes right for the hips. The big horns bring the character and sensuous vocals are the icing on the cake. On the flip is 'Gure Yose Me,' a tune rooted in reggae rhythms thanks to the work of Josie Coppola, Europe's No.1 reggae drummer.

Review: Who remembers when Hip Hop was a force for good? A happy, colourful sound brimming with positivity and realness, rather than the blingy boasts of studio gangsters? Whether you do or don't, this new Daisy Age compilation by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley is a timely release that shines a light on that small but golden era back in the late 80s. Key protagonists like Jungle Brothers and A Tribe Called Quest, as well as De La Soul, whose "3 Feet High and Rising" album was at the centre of this micro-movement, all feature alongside Pop and R&B with a similarly positive outlook. Essential.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Ennio Morricone's legacy is well known across the world, or at least the world of cinephiles. The legendary film composer is responsible or no less than 400 movie and TV scores (in fact, he's made a few more), with a 100-strong oeuvre of classical compositions to add to that storied back catalogue. Sadly lost last year at the age of 91- unrelated to coronavirus - much of his work is now rightfully returning to the release schedule.

Of course, none of his output can match the music he created to accompany Spaghetti Westerns - Italian made cowboy movies from directors such as another late-great, Sergio Leone, including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars. 134 of the finest arrangements from that part of his life are included on this mammoth collector's item, which proves you don't really need visuals to be transported to the wild frontier towns of yesterday.

Review: Long-serving Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker has made some magical solo albums in recent times, combining his particular take on jazz guitar with chopped-up instrumentation, dusty samples, post hip-hop beats and a large dollop of experimental intent. On Forfolks, his latest missive on Chicagoan imprint International Anthem, Parker flips the script, delivering an octet of solo guitar works that's as varied as it is jaw-droppingly good. Beginning with a piece of layered, cyclical minimalism reminiscent of Reich and Pat Metheny's 'Electric Counterpoint', Parker flits between jazzy interpretations of classic guitar pieces, droning and effects-laden soundscapes, lilting soundscapes, melancholic masterpieces and meditations on a theme.

Review: Detroit and Chicago influenced sounds by a pair of French producers here on a new banging crossover project called Motorbremsen. Marius Cyrilou (Cyril Martin) and Popodi Venturi (Olivier Azemar) serve up a wide variety of moods and grooves on the So Confused EP: the deep and emotive soul-funk of the title track is clearly indebted to the Three Chairs sound, while the minimal electro-funk of "Sanctuary" explores the same depths of legends Drexciya. Over on side B, you've got material that takes a more housey turn, with the late night mood music of "Riding Over The Darkness" followed by the spooky after hours minimalism of "Human Freaks". Tip!

Review: Gang of Duck's co-founder Sabla serves up a debut album on new label Pensaments Sonics, which has been conceived out of the necessity "to release albums from a sonic perspective." This one is a brilliantly frayed-edge, soft focus work of ambient electronics, swirling pads and found sounds that add rich detail to the often sparse tracks. Lots of shadows, dream states and hallucinations feature throughout as tracks get dark and sub aquatic like 'Ground Loop' and more post-human and desolate on 'Constellation Of Data.' Introspective yet propulsive, this is a hugely absorbing listen.

How Superstitious (instrumental mix) (4:14)
Review: Limited white vinyl repress.DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip-hop classic 'How High' atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie's party-starting floor-heater 'Superstition'. It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonder-ful jam.

Review: The original deep house master Ron Trent is back with one more soul soothing and utterly cathartic outing before this most turbulent of years draws to a close. This is the third release from his forthcoming Romantic Flight album and is a real house lament. He is in particularly spiritual mode here with 'Black Romantic' being a delicate house dance with sprinklings of percussion, acoustic guitar sounds and streaming synths all sinking you into a reverie while vocals drift up top. The instrumental removes that vocal and so ore focus is on the fantastic arrangement and instrumentation. Lush.

Review: French DJ-turned-remixer Young Pulse's popular Paris Edits series notches up seven volumes, this time via a three-tracker packed to the rafters with heavyweight disco-funk grooves. Arguably the best of a very strong bunch is 'Bobo's Reason', a reverb and delay-laden, slightly beefed-up rearrangement of an excitable, horn-heavy disco-soul tune from the Philadelphia school of orchestrated dancefloor fun. There is of course plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP though, with the spacey, synth-laden, percussion-rich disco-boogie of 'Beggar's Run' being joined on side two by the high-octane disco-funk weight of 'Bisso's Love'.

The second installment is equally as inspired, with highlights including the ever-changing, acid-flecked exoticism of the Black Dog's 'Psyil Cosyin', Autechre's haunting, 12-minute remix of Seefeel's 'Spangle', the Tangerine Dream-does-ambient trip that is Beautyon's 'To Swing Pil', and the stately beauty of Beaumant Hannant's 'Utuba (Reprised Version)'. Rallying round in support of World Mental Health Day 2020, Shanti Celeste kicks the record off in style with the rapid fire, deep-diving workout 'Fantasma'. OCB keeps the pressure up with the psychotropic techno of 'RS3', while Michelle works up some delightfully freaky synths on playful jacker 'Aesthetic'. Bobby's 'Free Your Mind' is a 90s-tinged, full fat techno production indebted to Detroit, Peder Mannerfelt keeps things stripped and raw on 'Our Levels' and Yu Su weaves a beautiful tapestry of interweaving rhythms on 'Brittney'. Adam Pits' trippy techno sounds resplendent on 'Wind Tunnel' and DJ Sports completes the set with the inventive, dembow slanted funk of 'Needs Dub'.

Review: Produced by Henry 'Junjo' Lawes and mixed by Scientist, 'Ice Cream Love' first slipped out it in its native Jamaica way back in 1980. The typically languid, weighty and dub flecked cut is built around a tweaked, replayed version of Coxsone Dodd's legendary 'He Prayed' riddim (a groove that has been used on countless reggae records before and since). Osbourne's lead vocal is typically relaxed and quietly soulful, while the involvement of Scientist on mixing desk duties guarantees more bass-weight and subtle dub inflections than your average roots number. Turn to the flip for a more spaced-out instrumental dub version based around the same riddim recording, with more effects-laden magic from Scientist.

Review: This record is a re-make of a Carmen Amez disco and boogie gem from 1983. The original goes for well over L200 and isn't even that good a pressing. This cover first saw the light of day as a 12" in September that was only acquired by certain DJs. It soon started trading for high prices as people wondered what the hell it was, who it was by, and whether it was a shifty bootleg. That's all resolved now as it gets a proper out with a freshly re-recorded version with strings, horns, bells, whistles and Vanessa Haynes on vocals. It's a lush bit of floor filling heart swelling disco, funk and soul gold with soaring strings to boot.

Predictably, the included material is every bit as well-crafted as its' similarly inclined predecessors. The standout is undoubtedly A-side 'They Speak Colour', a loopy, soft-focus disco-house jam whose relentless grooves, synthesizer splashes and simmering orchestration make it sound like Soundstream after a bong full of Marijuana smoke and several disco biscuits. Elsewhere, 'The City' is a canny revision of an unusual disco-boogie number that builds through sections of drums and cut-up, scat style vocals before finally flourishing late on, while 'The Cull' is a deep and meandering head-nodder tailor-made for warm-up sets and sit-down bar gigs.

Review: Anyone with at least a rudimentary knowledge of the history of UK dance music, and deep house in particular, will tell you that this album is a big deal. It's the first full-length in 19 years from Charles Webster, a producer whose atmospheric, smoky take on deep house and downtempo grooves has always been a cut above his UK contemporaries. The big question is this: is it any good? Predictably, it most certainly is. Featuring a wealth of guest vocalists (Sia, Shara Nelson and Terra Deva included), Decision Time sees Webster effortlessly blur the boundaries between smoky soul, trip-hop, jazz, future R&B, broken beat and house so deep it may take you a while to resurface. In a word: brilliant.

Fans of cult TV might recognise the snatch of Badalamenti strings that announce "Radar" in such ominous fashion, though it's they way this element is weaved amidst ever groaning insect like bass and murderous strains of dystopian acid that truly impresses. And of course the brittle click clack of drums that always threatens to smash to pieces. In contrast, "Vacuum States" offers a more optimistic slant on the sci fi electro poise, gradually letting loose a succession of kaleidoscopic synth flutters over the stripped down kick thrust and glooping bass.

Review: There's naturally much to enjoy on the latest volume in Africa Seven's A7 Edits series, which pairs original - and usually obscure - old Afro-disco and Afro-boogie gems with fresh 21st century edits. This time round, the A-side is all about Kemayo & K System's piano and horn-heavy disco-funk jam 'Biram', a two-minute blast of dancefloor exuberance that Phillip Lauer cleverly re-imagines as loopy, locked-in chunk of Afro-disco/disco house fusion. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour Afro National's heavy, low-slung stomper 'Push Forward', a cut that brilliantly adds chanted vocals and Hendrix style guitar solos to a sweaty, non-stop groove. Al Zanders does a great job in ratcheting up the tension and heaviness on his accompanying club-ready extension.

Review: Serious disco business here from Felix Bastedos. He may not have been born in wedlock but he sure knows his way around an edit. Two pretty obscure cuts here get Bastedized: on the A we have 'Anywhere You Want To Go', a big old heavy disco funk groove with plenty of switches and surprises along the way. Meanwhile on the B things step up a notch or two tempo wise as the almost country-styled vocal takes the lead as we pray for the night to never end. Keep on dancing.

Review: Diogo Strausz has previously released on Razor-N-Tape as part of the duo Balako but now steps up as a solo artist to kick off the label's 2021. A Sao Paulista now living in Paris, he brings plenty of musicality to the slick 7", firstly with 'Emancipacao,' which is awash with melancholic keys and rich bass but also plenty of fantastic leads from both synths and sax. It's splashy and splashy and colourful disco. '50 Anos Em 5' then gets playful and funky with a Latin twist as the salsa beats an squelchy bass all make you want to spin on your heels.

Review: First released back in 2015, the third album from Bjorn Wagner's break-fired revivalist funk combo, the Mighty Mocambos, has been given the reissue treatment on vibrant red vinyl. It's arguably the most notable of the eight-piece band's full-length excursions, primarily because it features an impressive cast-list of guest rappers, singers and musicians (Shawn Lee even plays autoharp on side two joint 'Cat Fight'). Musically, it's a boisterous and party-starting affair, with Wanger and co flitting between breakdancer-friendly instrumental funk, 1960s style vocal soul ('In The Dark', with Nicola Richards, is a highlight), and largely up-tempo, club-ready numbers featuring singing and rapping from the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Charlie Funk and Donald D.
