Zydereen De Neptuno EP
Cat: PARTOUT 1801. Rel: 20 Nov 23

Zydereen De Neptuno (6:04)
Black Light (5:48)
Lead-Acid Mentality (6:20)
Nocturnal Passengers (6:15)
Review: Buckle up and hold on tight for the latest electro excursion from the French folks behind the Patrout label. Buraye is the man in the driver's seat and sets his sights on the stars with 'Zydereen De Neptuno' which has zippy synths and snappy snares all weaving in and out of the drums. 'Black Light' then has a more menacing and darker bassline and 'Lead-Acid Mentality' brings the cyborg funk with a punchy beat and snaking bassline keeping you guessing. Last of all is 'Nocturnal Passengers' - defined by its squelchy and plunging bassline.

Zvestoba (Christian Kroupa Naked version) (4:47)
Review: O! Kult was a post-punk and industrial band from Yugoslavia that was active in the 1980s. Like many of their peers at the time, they were censored by the communist party that was in charge but that didn't stop them from making music and gaining a cult following. Their cut 'Zvestoba' has been found in old Radio student archives and brought back to life here and then remixed by modern luminaries Silent Servant, Christian Kroupa (who is one half of Black Dot) and 198319831983. They add weighty tech, EBM and moody electro vibes to make for a strong package.

Review: Raw Takes offers up exactly that - perfectly imperfect electro jams direct from his machines. We last heard from him here at Juno back in 2020 on a VA via the Sample Delivery label but here he takes charge of all six cuts on this new Zement EP. '901 Area' opens with wobbly sheet metal synths and zippy pads that eventually coalesce around a nice snappy electro breakbeat. 'Sxx' pairs ambient pads with machine gun laser fire and 'JMS' then brings a more deep and reverential viber. The rich variation continues on the flip so that there is everything from tripped-out acid to hard-hitting and ear-drum-shattering electro-tech.

Ideal Future (5:05)
Acid Thirst (5:57)
Climb These Walls (5:43)
Review: M Parent's penchant for texture is laid bare on this searing and arresting new EP for Zement. It opens with 'Gravel Pit' which sounds like an audio diary from a car-wrecking plant. Twisted metal, fizzing battery acid, and crushed glass all feature over a distorted baseline and broken rhythm. Those same scuzzy sounds define the rest of the EP from the acid-laced 'Ideal Future' to the coruscated funk of 'Acid Thirst' via the caustic intensity of closer Climb These Walls'. An impressively unique offering that very much has its own singularly sound palette.

Automate Your Mind (5:45)
Body Rocking (4:24)
Smoke Break (4:11)
Review: Zement welcome back Ole Mic Odd and Alonzo for another punch of high impact tunes aimed squarely at the floor. There is plenty of cosmic urgency to the electro-tech of 'B-A-D' and all its withering sci-fi aesthetics. 'Automate Your Mind' bristles eve more with brilliantly tight drums and hits and mystic pads up above. 'Body Rocking' gets busy with pixelated melodic arps and vocoder vocals with punchy kicks and 'Smoke Break' is a more mindful and slower jam for thoughtful reflection.

Review: French electro botherer Kafkactrl came up over the past couple of years with releases on Vortex Traks, and now they've been snapped up by Kluentah's Zement label which means rubbing shoulders with the likes of LTF and Chupacabras. Fine company indeed, and this promising newcomer more than steps up to the plate with assured, moody and brooding electro gear produced with flair and precision in equal measure. Across the six tracks you get a lot of ground covered, from 'Interzone's edgy dystopian machine funk to the lurid robo-nightmares of 'Gradient Descent' and the Drexciyan body pop of 'Checksum Zero'.

Review: YUYAY Records chief Robyrt Hecht from Leipzig presents the label's next release in the form of Yskayan Knowledge, an extended EP featuring some intelligent takes on the electro sound. There's bass heavy computer funk as heard on 'Don't Sell Our Knowledge' and some minimal night moves for showroom dummies ('Earnings') on side A, while over on the flip there's the mandatory futurist epic in the form of 'Exploitation/Liquidation'.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Spanish electro stalwart Boris Divider is back on his own Drivecom label with another masterful demonstration of the synapse tickling sound he's been perfecting for nearly 20 years. 'Your Light' is a dramatic, tense affair with cinematic overtones but that doesn't detract from the punchy, floor-ready effectiveness of the track. It's left to the 'Variant Version' to head further out with a beatless excursion driven by cascading arps. The 'Infrared Version' on the B-side turns the heat back up with a snarling, full-bodied approach that will push a party to its peak whenever it gets dropped.

Strangers On The Train (3:35)
Review: Midland has been smart about his arc as a producer, taking his time rather than churning out releases for the sake of it. As such, when we do get something new from the lad, it always feels like an occasion, and of course the music invariably matches the mood. 'You Never Take Me Dancing' is in fact the B-side opener on this new four-track record, but it plays out like the lead role on an EP bursting with fresh ideas. 'Strangers On The Train' toys with more experimental synthesis and a stripped back mix down that takes its cues from footwork, while 'Drift Into The Algorithm' plays out as the slinkier, shimmering house he's perhaps been better known for of late. The class and consideration just spills out of this record - more than worth waiting for.

Review: If this is your first encounter with Har Mar Superstar, prepare to be amazed. Much like another icon known to not take himself too seriously while also still being deadly, deadly serious - Chilly Gonzales - Sean Tillmann, AKA Har Mar Superstar, AKA Calvin Krime, AKA Sean Na Na, this is a guy who doesn't fit the typically smooth and polished aesthetics of US R&B chart toppers, is happy to be professionally photographed in his y-fronts, but makes music that can compete with the genre's finest. And then some.

You Can Feel Me marked the artist's second full length release, and one look at the collabs is enough to prove just how respected he already was. On the track list you've got Beth Ditto, dirty Preston, Clark Baechle, Tiny E and a remix by Mint Royale, but the real shining light is the man himself, who delivers 14 stone cold jams, from sultry and sexy to drop-top bumpers.

Review: There is some serious electro talent on this new EP from Fanzine, starting with now US-based, UK-favourite Carl Finlow. His machines are in fine fettle once more as crisp, kicking electro rhythms are overlaid with bright, silvery, pixelated melodic fireworks on the sublime 'Organoiods'. Hoax Believers get more gritty with the sheet metal snares and in-your-face arps of 'Short Circuit' while Sound Synthesis offers something moody and unsettling on their 'Vertex43'. Univac will make your eyes water with the abrasive textures of 'H Beat.'

Review: Fanzine Records out of sunny A Coruna, Spain returns this week with the next installment in its Xuntanza series. On both sides they've made contact with some homegrown veterans of the scene in the form of Annie Hall, who executes the contemplative beat programme of 'Seventy3' followed by Madrid's Boris Divider who goes fast forward into the future on the glitchy IDM of 'Perfect Ratio'. Over on the flip, Terassa's Dark Vektor launches some sci-fi funk at you on 'Look Into Da Fiucha' followed by local producer Lefrenk on the dystopian bass assault of 'Shurko'.

Review: Those who know, know how strong the Dutch electro scene has been since the early 90s and Netherlands label BAKK has a special compilation here with many excellent electro tracks to enjoy - no less than 11 tunes in total, spread across three pieces of wax. The list of artists is impressive, from Legowelt, Antenna, SFV Acid and more. This pack starts off with a stunner called 'Bos Ochtendmist' by Legowelt, a phased out and radiant futuristic theme song that's just downright beautiful! Rather than imitating any other city's history of the style's, these artists have their own style - see Aurora Halal's 'Spiral' as a great example, or Sfv Acid 's 'Urbanfury' which adds some nice IDM influences. The slow and deep bass on Tala Drum Corps's 'Gargoyle' is killer too. An early candidate for best electro comp of the year 2024.

Review: Russian-born, Jerusalem-raised and now Berlin-based Serge Geyzel has released on labels such as Mindcolormusic, Brokntoys, Flesh Or Die and Zodiak Commune Records. From a classical and jazz music background, he combines a love of early noughties electronica with influences of electro and dark ambient in his distinct brand of modern drum 'n' bass for his new opus titled Xenophonic. From the dreamy Jupiter jazz of 'Double Fantasy', the grey area steppa that is 'I Wonder' to the off-kilter IDM of 'Keep Walking' being just some highlights - Geyzel delivers his finest moment yet.

Review: To deliver their third release since debuting in 2018, from the less-than-prolific DXL Records has recruited Pressure Point, a producer who received plenty of praise for his earlier singles on Sol Asylum, Telharmonic Texture and All On Tape. The Wrong System EP is a quietly impressive return to form, with the little-known producer smoothly moving between intergalactic tech-house funk (the leaping, sci-fi sounds, shuffling drums and bubbly melodies of 'Timepiece'), mind-altering tech-house box jams (see 'Wrong Systems', with its chiming lead lines and hypnotic vibe), and tech-tinged deep house goodness ('Tom Cat'). The accompanying 'Spacetravel Mix' of 'Tom Cat' is also rather good, in part because it features what sounds like a broken modem having a meltdown over bustling machine drums, foreboding bass and soft-touch chords.

Clad in artwork details by Swedish graffiti legend Nug, Wormhole Of Time comprises unreleased cuts and long out-of-print jams spanning many of Huhta's aliases. The release also comes with a zine featuring photographs and an interview reflecting on Huhta's multifarious life in music.

Review: Soul Jazz Records promise this is a one off and strictly limited pressing of Alien Starr's 'World Of Ecstasy.' It is a faithful reproduction of the original in terms of art and sound and has been restored from the label after they included it on their excellent recent Space Funk 2 - Afro-Futurist Electro Funk In Space 1976-84 compilation. tUSA in 1985 featuring big slap bass energy, hand claps, drum funk and electro boogie bass. .

Review: Two years ago, UK techno mainstay Gabriel made his bow on Rawax's Motor City Edition series with an EP of cuts drawn from his seemingly endless archive of unreleased gems. We're not sure whether the four tracks on this belated sequel are old and new, but they're certainly timeless-sounding and impressively deep. Check first 'Mordax', an impeccable mixture of Motor City star-gazing and analogue deep house blessed with a ridiculously good bassline, before admiring the sun-splashed warmth of 'The Multicoloured Mind', where jazzy piano motifs, sustained synth-strings and warming chords dance atop a loose-limbed house-not-house beat. Over on the B-side 'It's All Pam's (Marseille)' is another gorgeous chunk of ageless deep house bliss, while 'Into Week Two' sees Gabriel once again blur the boundaries between Detroit techno and futurist deep house tropes.

Review: Many of us pine for a 'scene shift', not least since most music scenes are prone to growing stagnant before succumbing to uncreative forces. With that in mind, Rez19nineteen hears a full-on resurrection of the EP Word To The Wise by Sceneshifters (under a different name), in doing so revitalizing the freshness of UK house in its entirety. Or at least, our enthusiasm for it. Proper retro vocal shouts, garage house beats, and alt-mixes make for a sweet trip back down memory lane, as if rubbing the dirt of the Denon lens and taking just one last snap of a long-foregone rave.

Review: Shadowy techno talent Daniel Avery has been associated with playing killer sets at fabric for more than a decade now. He was entrusted with warm up duties at a very early stage in his career and now carries on his relationship with a second release via fabric Originals which is part of the iconic clubs's ongoing 25 year anniversary celebrations. Says the man himself about this new two-tracker, "as with every club record I ever make, [this one] has Room 1 coursing through its veins. I know that room like the back of my hand and this is how the room sounds in my skull."

Review: Introducing Wobbly Mob, a new independent label based between Germany and the UK. Their debut release is by rising producer Glockta (aka Popka) from York, who serves up a collection of diverse tracks on WMR001. Detroit meets 2-step on the wondrous opener 'Plastic Fiver' which receives a ravey remix by Shawn Cartier over on the flip later, there's also off-kilter late night mood music on 'No Diamonds' and the rolling low end theory of 'Next Year'.

Review: Arpanet is Gerald Donald, the Detroit techno producer who is most famous for his work as Drexciya alongside the late great James Stinson. Following the reissue of his most essential 2006 album Inertial Frame, it is now Wireless Internet that gets served up afresh by the French label Record Makers. In the 19 years since the album first arrived - his first under the alias - nothing has dimmed its shine. The sound throughout is warm and futuristic, with bleeping melodies and bumping drums, silvery hits and a cyborg funk that defines everything Donald ever does. From the bright lights and optimism of 'Illuminated Displays' to the more down, dirty and rugged bass of 'NTT Docomo,' you do not want to sleep on this one.

Review: An especially astute 90s throwback comes in the form of this Lapsus Records reissue of Cold Storage's 'wipE'out' - The Zero Gravity' soundtrack. Cold Storage is the one-time moniker of Welsh game musician Tim Wright, whose original pieces making up this work - the OST for the nominal, lightning-fast futuristic racing game - come amidst well-known soundtrack curations a-la Leftfield, The Chemical Brothers and Orbital. But it's Wright's work that is most novel here, centring on accelerated notes of drum & bass and the pure synth rush of trance; the kinds of sonic signifiers that production newcomers know, love and constantly rehash today.
