ZZZ (Volta Cab Warehouse mix)
Akom (original mix)
Inc (origina mix)
Review: Commencing the new Italian imprint Frole in style, Danny Ward, better known as Dubble D, is presenting his Moodymanc alias in a convoluted artist mix up that needn't raise concerns about the quality of house music contained within. "ZZZ" is pared right down to a minimal hum, with just the bare essentials of drums at work while developed content thrums away at the core of the track for those that listen closely enough. Volta Cab brings a much bigger sound to the remix, slapping some chunky chords and choice bleeps over the top and beefing the drums up no end. "Akom" returns to more restrained tones, with plenty of space for vocal snippets to echo in and pristinely arranged drums, while "Inc" warms things up a treat with chord-infected smooth house tones and a much breezier outlook overall.

Review: Having dropped his Lagarius album earlier this year, Detroit mainstay Gary Martin is back on his Teknotika label with a collaborative EP with fellow Motor City legend Javonntte. The story goes that Martin had planned a break from the studio, but instead wound up connecting with Javonntte to lend his considerable keyboard talents to one of Martin's beats, which wound up in two different versions of 'The Infinite Time', now found on the B-side of this single. In both mixes, Javonntte's keys soar high and Martin's beats move with a broken flex that only adds to the jazziness. A-side track 'Zurvan' came after, balancing the record out with an Eastern-tinged melodic scale which gives the record an enchanting, mysterious quality.

Zug Island
K2 Attack!
Review: Yet another bold and challenging Wild Oats 12", a label that seems to be positively affronted by some of the meekness currently getting mislabelled as techno. Zug Island sees label boss Kyle Hall team up with Detroit Underground's Kero for two productions inspired by their visit to the toxic metal factory on Zug Island, housed between Detroit and Windsor, Canada on the Detroit Rouge river. The label explicitly states this record is "intended to sonically personify the environment of Zug Island and its harmful industrial vibrations it currently has on the river, wildlife and even the humans residing there". Naturally there's an underlying anger present throughout, with "Zug Island" setting menacing 303 loops spiralling over a sparse backdrop of clattering snares. With no discernable kick drum, the track tends to float in corroded stasis, though this lack of driving force makes it a perfect track to combine with drum heavy DJ tools. Complementing this, "K2 Attack!" is less abstract but more abrasive, rising from the high frequency noise into a rigid frame of bubbling electro in the style of Detroit's techno forefathers.

Zsa Zsa (Kiani vs Red D remix)
Review: The original of this first saw the light back in autumn 2013, and it remains a dynamically built nu-disco track boasting early Aeroplane style piano licks and an arresting vocal from Kristina Train. It's Blamma Blamma at their most stately and stunning. Here we find it in remix form; Psychemagik provide a liquid, bulbous bass facelift, Cato re-emphasises the nude beauty with a few edit sparkles, Wolf + Lamb go deeper with a synth heavy late-night floor stomper while Kiani vs Red D close the show with a sunset-minded slice of modern euphoria. Each twist adding a whole new chapter to the Blamma Blamma story, the only problem is working out which rub to add in your next set.

Zopiclone (8:08)
Review: Mister Saturday Night's second release of the week comes from a new Glaswegian producer, the enigmatically names Atlus, who drops the fresh and exciting "Zopiclone", a bizarre and squawking house cut that jitters its way through stumbling low-ends and brittle pieces of percussion. While that is certainly the stand out moment in terms of pure oddity, "Gum" is nothing short of excellent, and its funky disco swing truly hits the spot, whereas "A Little More Time" is the downtempo sibling, the part of the EP that is open to interpretation and one beautiful beatless sway of melodies.

Zoned (DJ Nature remix)
Review: Red Rack'Em's first release of 2014 comes on City Fly Records, also home to artists like Flori and Kez YM, and Daniel Berman provides them with a three-track 12" complete with a DJ Nature remix of the A-side. "Zone" is a woozy deep house trip with psychedelic vocals and loud interrupting drums, while "Brazilian Nuts" keeps things in a cosmic zone, introducing fragments of electro rhythms and sub-throbbing urban basslines. DJ Nature disco's up his remix of "Zoned", letting light chords set a soft tone while stripping the original of its futuristic elements, creating something a little more grounded in traditional house music aesthetics.

Review: K.O.G's Zone 6 Agege album was recorded back in November 2020 and it pays homage to a small coastal suburb in Accra, the Ghanaian capital where he grew up. Now it gets revisited for a series of superb remixes alongside a couple of the original standout tunes. Poirier, Captain Planet and Aroop Roy all bring the class here. Each one is a fresh fusion of Afro-jazz with compelling rhythms at their heart. Originals 'Shidaa' and 'No Way' are still fresh, too.

Review: D'Marc Cantu has established himself as one the most under rated producers currently operating off a slew of killer, and occasionally mind bending releases for a small clutch of labels such as Creme, Nation, and MOS. This year it feels like the Ann Arbor-based producer is actively spreading his wings with a series of 12"s on labels further afield with this latest for pan European outfit Shaddock following releases on Desire, One Electric and Ansatz. Zone 4 effectively demonstrates what a versatile producer Cantu is now, offering sprawling hi tech soundscapes ("Point Of Fracture"), downbeat electronic introspection rich in musicality ("Psychotronics") freeform star gazing techno (release highlight "STS - 115") and bugged out acid jakbeat in "Zone 4" which we think a lot of DJs will gravitate towards.

Unsound Mind (10:20)
Review: Another week, another killer release from Kiwi deep house sorts Chaos in the CBD. This one, a two-tracker on the In Dust We Trust label that they set up with pal John Sable earlier this year, is undoubtedly one of their strongest EPs to date. On the A-side you'll find the typically drowsy and atmospheric "Zona Del Silencio", a tactile and humid chunk of early morning deep house built around languid synth-bass and rolling, carnival-friendly percussion. The rolling bongo hits return on creepier flipside "Unsound Mind", the musical equivalent of stumbling through a rainforest at 3am while high on herbal remedies. As with many of the duo's productions, it subtly builds throughout, offering movement despite the hypnotic, slow-build nature of the track's construction.

Review: Having served up a swathe of predictably mind-mangling original productions on their re-animated Droid imprint, those crazy Idjut Boys are back on Noid with more disco adjustments and two new rib-tickling aliases, Cyrus Posatron and Digby Yakdin. They start with a dash of thrusting, throbbing, devilishly dubbed-out Italo-disco sweatiness ('Zodiac Bath Bomb'), before adding their sleazy, space echo-driven touch to an eyeliner-sporting new wave chugger ('Spark Life'). Over on the B-side, they first fiddle with an extra-percussive, near no-wave disco workout (the ace 'But Why Jeff?'), before playing around with a brilliantly OTT chunk of overblown rock-not-rock silliness ('Landfill') and treating us to a dash of cosmic rock brilliance ('I Just Called To Say I Love You').

Crazy Spirit
Review: The boy Naples hooks up with Bankhead again for what looks and sounds like a sequel to last year's much loved El Portal 12" for The Trilogy Tapes. Apparently named in honour of the hospitable reception young Anthony received whilst playing a party in the Columbian town of Zipacon, this four track release opens with "Perron" which sounds like previous Naples hit "Busy Signal" hollowed out. From here, "Zipacon" feels like a real high point with fizzing, intricate drum patterns and a warbling pad line that really captivates. Flipside cut "More Problem" offers a undeniably booming interlude before Naples gets really bugged out on the excellent "Crazy Spirit".

Review: Lefferis Kalabakas may have been making and releasing music as Lee Burton for the best part of 14 years - largely for labels like Raum Musik and Up The Stuss - but this tidy EP still marks his first outing on German giant Rawax. He starts in confident mood via energy-packed peak-time workout 'Party Crusher', where acid licks, Yorkshire bleeps and piano riffs rise above an early LFO-inspired groove, before opting for a mid-90s-MK-goes-psychedelic flex on 'Nismo'. Over on the flip, 'VOT' is a rolling, acid-flecked, organ-sporting slab of rushing dancefloor positivity, while 'Zero G' is a raging, TB-303 heavy acid-breaks roller.

Review: Quirky and lo-fi minimal moods from the Pirka label, successfully blending four tracks from various artists in their repertoire as far-flung as speed garage, deep house, and broken beat. Glitchingly restless come tracks like Hendriks Toth's 'Pescado Y Limon' and Jorge Savoretti & Lulla's 'Zoot', both of which we consider to be highlights thanks to their impressively slick and agile production quality and swing. The tunes by Guy From Downstairs and Unknown Collective are no less beguiling, spanning crossrhythmic pulses to speedy hat-clap hypnotizers.

Review: Some seven years after dropping his debut solo single - an inspired collection of re-edits for the acclaimed RVNG of the NRDS series - Jacques Renault releases his debut album. Appearing on the Let's Play House label he runs with pal Nik Mercer, Zentrum is an eclectic, anything-goes affair, with an impressive cast of collaborators (The Emperor Machine, Luke Jenner and former Runaway production partner Marcos Cabral included) swinging by to lend a hand. As you might expect, it touches on many of his influences - drowsy leftfield disco, leftfield funk, eccentric broken beats, strobe-lit basement jams, wonky acid house (the rather brilliant "Touch You"), African rhythms, and vintage US garage amongst them - whilst retaining a distinctive voice throughout. Given the obvious eclecticism, it takes a few listens to really sink in, but it's certainly worth the effort; closer "Faith", featuring Karl Dixon, is particularly rewarding.

Review: This has been a long time coming! Steve Moore's Zen Spiders 12" for Future Times was first announced for release nearly twelve months ago, however in this period the DC label have encountered all manner of pressing plant issues that have played havoc with their release schedules. Such delays are no doubt frustrating in the extreme for the label and artist, though some solace can be found in the timeless, luxurious quality of both tracks from Moore here. Lead track "Zen Spiders" is a typical Moore production, commencing with a wondrous cinematic bed of synth textures upon which a sleepy bassline and crunchy percussion emerge to nudge the track forth across it's seven minutes. On the flip "Lwaxana" pairs a supple arpeggiated bassline with taut motorik drums with this dual rigidity offset by the vast swathes of synths that will you into a state of opiated calm.

Review: The always adventurous Especial label is back on its world travels once more for another cultured EP, this time from Jonne Lyden aka 53X. This is a widescreen bass exploration with trance-tinged steppas looking firmly to the future from the Finnish-born artist. He has a background in punk bands but a trip to Berlin turned his ear and now he makes experimental fusions that draw on everything from industrial to Berghain to Detroit for inspiration. His tunes are mostly started out as live jams and then edited into what we have here - club-ready sounds, rich atmospherics, acid, breaks and hypnotic rhythms.
