Review: Alex "Omar" Smith has never been one for modesty, so we shouldn't be too surprised that he's called his latest full-length - his fifth in total - The Best. To be fair, he is rather good at producing high-grade deep house, and here unveils another eleven gems. Interestingly, he's recruited an impressive cast-list of collaborators and guests, including Norman Talley, Kyle Hall, OB Ignitt and, most surprisingly of all, Bristol-based Tom Bug. Highlights are plentiful, from the dusty afro and blues influences of the tribal "Chama Piru's", and hazy, Rhodes-heavy vocal cut "AhRevolution", to the hip-wigglin' disco-house influences of "Seen Was Set", and retro-futurist, Inner City style Divinity hook-up "On Your Way".

Review: It may come with an eyebrow-raising price tag, but what's on offer here is undeniably alluring: a box set of 10 seven-inch singles containing all of the songs from Louie Vega's brilliant Expansions In The NYC album - an all-star affair in which the Masters at Work man celebrated his love of New York disco, boogie and house. The album itself is incredible, with fantastic musicianship, arrangements and vocals, while the cast list - which includes original electrofunk outfit Unlimited Touch, Peech Boys main man Bernard Fowler, Honey Dijon, Cindy Mazelle, Moodymann, Kerri Chandler and his son Nico - is similarly impressive. It's a great product, packed with brilliant music: a fitting finale to this portion of the ongping 'Expansions NYC' project.

Review: Loads has been written about Kerri Chandler's inspired Spaces & Places album, an expansive set in which the legendary US producer pays tribute to some of his favourite venues around the world via tracks recorded inside them (and designed specifically with them in mind). It's a genuine triumph, as this full triple-vinyl edition (pressed to translucent green wax and accompanied by a poster featuring pictures taken by Chandler on his travels). It's basically Chandler doing what he does best - there are few musical surprises, but next to no mis-steps either - with our current favourites including the deeply emotive soulful house of 'Back To Earth (Find Your Peace)', the Berlin haziness of 'Sunrise (Watergate)', the bass-heavy brilliance of 'Subbie (Jackpot Mix)', the boogie-influenced, string-laden 'Kaiku (Disco Version)' and the sax-sporting funkiness of 'The Morning Heat (Main Mix)'.

Review: It is no secret that we here at Juno HQ are huge fans of the one and only Alex 'Omar S' Smith. He is a machine when it comes to making music and barely a year goes by without another expansive new album form the Detroit badman. Here comes this year's and it has all the things you would hope for and expect: raw, unfussy but infectious house with dusty drums and 80s synths. Supercoolwicked is a frequently appearing guest who lends these tunes alluring vocal touches while the grooves themselves are subtly, effective tweaks on Smith's tried and tested template. Review: Swiss label Drumpoet has been one of those super reliable outlets that serves up good quality deep house. It has now been doing so for 15 years and marks the occasion with a bumper triple vinyl collection featuring 13 cuts from all the label's finest associates. There is brilliantly left-of-centre minimal from Roman Flugel and Frank Weidermann to kick off, then melody-rich deep house from Bubble Wrap, and an absolute classic from the one and only Herbert who supplies 'Air.' Plenty more lushness comes from the likes of Fred Everything and Ripperton to make this a fine collection.

It arrives across six sides of opaque violet vinyl and is hugely limited. The house here is dusty and laden with great soul samples, lit up with gorgeous jazzy melodies and steeped in musicality. The opener is a real early standout while cuts like 'Up To Rise' are full of warm, joyous synth magic.

Built To Last - appearing on Theo Parrish's significant Sound Signature label - is his first album-length excursion. Review: DJ Koze's music is very much suited to the album format. Although his last effort through this medium was back in 2013, his explorative nature and wide-eyed, improvisational style are simply made to branch out into areas outside of the more predictable house and techno formats. Knock Knock comes through on his own Pampa label, with its seventeen tracks all providing us with something different and wonderful, from slo-mo r&b sounds to funky, wayward house music that is most certainly at the 'outside' of the house spectrum. There are plenty of special guests, too, including Mano Le Tough, Sophia Kennedy, and many other relevant talents. A Koze speciality.

Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: If you're going to produce a box set to celebrate your label's 25th birthday, you may as well do it in style. That was certainly Michael Reinboth's thinking when he put together this luxurious set marking a quarter of a century since the launch of his admired Compost Records imprint. It boasts no less than ten slabs of wax containing fresh remixes of catalogue cuts from a stellar cast of house, techno and disco producers (think Glenn Underground, Zenker Brothers, Francois K, Ron Trent, Moodymann, Mark E and Gerd Janson) and a handful of killer bonus cuts (most notably early Move D classic "Hurt Me"). In addition, the box also contains two mix tapes, a pin badge, bag and tons of stickers. Basically, it's a beautiful item packed full of quality music and label merchandise.

Review: If you are part of the demographic of Art Department fans who like their tote bags to be leather then this ltd edition of the Canadian tech house duo's second LP is for you! When announcing the release of Natural Selection, Johnny White and Kenny Glasgow promised a more "mature and experimental sound". Certainly, the album is a more wide-ranging and atmospheric album than their club-friendly debut, The Drawing Board. While there are forays into dancefloor-centric material - see Seth Troxler hook-up "Cruel Intentions" and the analogue techno pulse of the delay-laden "Hunt" - for the most part the duo sticks to a slower tempo, drawing influence from IDM, new wave (see "Crazy"), maudlin trip-hop, ambient and downbeat pop. As a result, Natural Selection is a surprisingly varied and inventive full-length.

Review: With an additional run of three club-minded MASSE remix 12"s released this week by Ostgut Ton, the hugely influential label will round up their soundtrack to the Berghain ballet with a collectors box set of six stand out scores from last year's production, six of which pressed to vinyl, with a further 16 on CD. Review: Having signalled the end of their Originals series in fine fettle with a wonderful selection from the New York based producer and selector Alex from Tokyo, Claremont 56 send out the end product of what must be one of the most onerous tasks in recent years. This rather dashing 5xLP box set house two tracks a side from each of the ten Originals compilations issued since the series commenced back in 2008. Aside from the sticky issues of actually legally licensing these tracks for a vinyl release, there's also the factor of having to whittle out just two songs from each of the compilations. Regardless, Paul Mudd Murphy has done a splendid job with inclusions such as Donna McGhee's superb disco cut from the Rong Music volume or the undervalued Anthony Watson gem from the final installment getting the approval of the Juno review team.

Review: The Prism is an aluminum cube, small enough to fit in your palm. It was designed by Nicolas Jaar as a new medium for releasing music. The first release - CSA001 - features 12 (mostly) unreleased songs from Jaar and other Clown & Sunset collaborators.
The Prism is a piece of art in and of itself; its contents beg to be shared. Twin headphone outlets encourage connections to the object and between the 2 listeners. The Prism tries to restore physicality to the listening experience. The medium and the method are as important as the music itself. The Prism makes you consider how the music is being heard, the way the object feels in your hands, and its potential to foster intimacy between listeners. When the Prism is unplugged, a beam of light passes through the empty center, revealing a void. Someone is missing.

Review: Despite Traum Schallplatten only establishing the Telrae sub label in 2010, the dub techno operation has been in remarkably prolific form, dropping some fifteen EPs from the likes of Salz, Martin Schulte, Reimut Van Bonn and Sven Weisseman. They close proceedings on 2012 in the best way possible with the rather dashing Archive Box Set, an 11 x 10" coloured vinyl package brandishing some 22 tracks. Most of the aforementioned artists contribute, as do Stefan Gubatz, Tobias Horberg and Deepchild for a Telrae showcase that will appeal equally to the dub techno completists and limited edition vinyl lovers.

Review: Sushitech's second chapter of their Tessera compilations has been in the making for over two years. It's not hard to understand why, however. This monstrous 5 disc release is riddled with techno killers of the highest calibre, from start to finish. We knew that these guys were reliable purveyors of fine electronic dance music, but this is a truly impressive showcase, and surely up there with the likes of Ostgut Ton. In fact, this compilation goes even beyond the immediate techno remit. It's difficult to pick out the highlights here; everything is solid, and even the opening dub echoes of "Prelude" is enough to get us salivating. There's a rare appearance on the dubbed-out deep house of "Skank" featuring Rhauder, Steve O'Sullivan makes a sleek appearance, Delano Smith offers two magnetic pieces of Detroit magic, XDB's "Frost" is nothing short of spectacular, and even Efdemin's glitchy, minimalist deep house seems more poignant than usual. This is a big'un - don't miss it.

Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: Earlier in the year distinguished deep house and deep techno producer Kaoru Inoue dusted off his Chari Chari alias for the first time in four years and delivered We Hear The Last Decades Dreaming, a gorgeous (and essential) fusion of new age ambient, American minimalism, jazz and dusty downtempo grooves. On the back of that acclaimed release, HMV in Japan has decided to offer-up a first ever vinyl pressing of the Japanese great's 2002 album under the alias, In Time. A little bolder and more colourful in tone, the set sees Inoue and a variety of guest musicians brilliantly blur the boundaries between ambient, modern classical, gentle Latin beats, dub-flecked grooves, numerous exotic Asian musical styles, hazy Latin techno and the deepest house around.

It was certainly the greatest house album of its period and remains - as this reissue proves - a timeless classic. Now pressed on three slabs of wax rather than two to make it more DJ-friendly, the set pairs stone cold Mr Fingers classics such as 'Mystery of Love (Dub)', 'Can You Feel It' (presented in its arguably superior instrumental form) and 'Washing Machine', with lesser-celebrated treats such as the breathlessly jacking and percussive 'Slam Dance', the lusciousl;y kaleidoscopic 'Stars' and the early morning delight that is 'For So Long'. Review: Louie Vega presents the third instalment of the Vega Records unreleased series with another quintuple LP of hard-hitting unreleased house bangers that span the breadth and width of everything the genre has to offer. Mr X's 'The Curse' is an industrial tribal house floor filler with jazz sections, 'World Collisions' is in a similar vein with a deeper more meditative thudding bass. Disc 2 sidesteps into a jazzy Latin lane with Tony Touch's sax-fueled 'Apaga La Luz' and 'Baza SOS Fever'. Disc 3 is a temple for disco-house, with two gospel-inspired funk-filled tracks from Honeysweet - 'Last Night Changed It All' is a particular favourite. If we are talking highlights, Josh Millan hits it out the park on "Let us Shine" with Elements Of Life; Side B with a jazz house instrumental that's the perfect comedown. Disc 5 sees a monumentous 11-minute funky jazz cut from Honeysweet with 'Being Free', paired with a soulful closer instrumental from Two Soul Fusion. House collectors would be crazy to pass this release up.

Recall delectably crude space jams and hardware ham-fists.
