Following an incredibly well received LP on reissue label, For Those That Knoe, Swatten returns here with more expansive, smokey and utterly consuming deep house cuts, stamped with his unique sound but offering a different flavour from his Definitive Transmission LP - one which immediately stands out from the crowd. Being only his third release in 20 years, there's an understandable sense of anticipation around Swatten's output. Review: Thomas Xu tends not to release much music, but when he does it tends to be musically rich, rhythmically complex and very, very good. That's certainly the case with "Places In Time", his second EP on Steady Flight following an inspired 2017 debut on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature imprint. There's much to set the pulse racing across the EP, from the heavily analogue, synthesizer-powered, intergalactic jazz-funk looseness of "Easin", and the slipped 21st century instrumental space-jazz of "Tired A Being Tired (What Are We Here For)", to the densely layered, piano-driven ambience of "Promise 2", and the hard-to-pigeonhole eccentricity of closing cut "Let's Go See Roy".

Review: Odopt have been responsible for some serious, sinewy heaters on labels like Born Free, 777 and Discos Capablanca. That should give you some idea of the kind of sonic sphere they operate in - rugged hardware house with a wavey bite and a playful instinct. It makes total sense then to see them sidle up to [Emotional] Especial with this four-tracker of surefooted deviant dance. 'A14' opens up proceedings on an ominous bassline and plenty of mechanical grind, while 'Keylat' jacks things up a smidge while resolutely wallowing in the muck of Odopt's studio practices. 'Sample Commerce Shot' is the catchiest cut on the record, riding a slinky beat and featuring a powerful lead hook that sounds beamed in from somewhere in a distant galaxy. 'Holy Motor$' finishes the record off on another brooding, death disco groover, bringing things full circle with the nocturnal offerings of 'A14'.

Review: All of the talk surrounding Ben UFO ahead of the release of his Rinse:16 mix focused squarely on the fact he is a rarity on the contemporary club scene, having built his considerable reputation as a DJ, not a producer. This is wonderfully showcased on a 29-track set that twists, turns, ebbs and flows, with the Hessle Audio chief always thinking one step ahead. Before there is time for the flow to drop into dark, undanceable corners, a sun-kissed curveball - be it the rapid arpeggios of 2562's "Winamp Melodrama" or the saccharine vocals of Champion's "Sensitivity" - is thrown and the mix is yanked in a new, pleasing direction. The upward progression through BPMs is barely perceptible; hardly surprising for someone who makes a living ignoring genre and stylistic restrictions and effortlessly joins the musical dots between modern day London, Bristol and Berlin.

Review: Melbourne outfit Cut Copy have long straddled the worlds of indie and dance (and the doomed middle ground where the twain meets) with aplomb. This has extended to their remix commissions - 2011 alone has seen the likes of Gavin Russom, Azari & III and, gulp, Carl Craig tweaking Cut Copy material (fair dues must go to their record label Modular for their part in this curation too). Here they enlist the services of some UK and Australian talent to remix "Blink And You'll Miss A Revolution". First up is a Chicken Lips malfunction, with some early cowbell carnage giving way into a pulsating bassline and twinkling keys. This shares the A-Side with the equally ace Tornado Wallace version, which settles into a murky, rolling groove - file under "late night throbber". On the flip you'll find the original version of the track nestled alongside a clubby, acid-tinged remake from Das Moth and Kenji Takimi.

Review: Despite the doors being closed on Dissident in 2009, former boss Andy Blake has been anything but quiet, with his World Unknown imprint bringing the acid and EBM sounds of his night of the same name to the world. This year saw him start another new label, In Plain Sight, which looks set to bring more esoteric house sounds to our ears, with the first release coming from the hitherto unknown YoungTEE. The first track, "Dr Chocolate" fuses the kind of oddball low-slung sounds and spoken-word samples that In Flagranti have been masters of for years, with jazzy keys and 808 cowbells which hint at a subtle Chicago influence. The classic house influence continues of "Perfect Model", which combines misty chords with an 80s pop groove, falsetto vocal sample and synth jam solo which comes across as alternate universe Michael Jackson track. As you'd expect from a label curated by Blake, it's house music, but not quite as you know it.

Review: The artwork, title and general feel of this debut full-length from Boston-based hipsters Soul Clap leads us to one startling conclusion: they want to be thought of as a kind of modern-day Prince for the E generation. It's a noble and daring aspiration fraught with danger. Yet for the most part, they pull it off. Flitting between touchy-feely, synth-heavy deepness, tactile house, fluid MDMA-funk, Balearic hip-house (really) and comfy, radio-friendly synth-soul, EFunk: The Album darts in many different directions but never loses sight of its ultimate purpose - namely to inspire mile-wide grins and spine-tingling dancefloor singalongs. It's not quite Sign 'O' The Times on gurners, but it's pretty good.

Review: Coldcut return with the stand-out single from their critically-acclaimed album, "Sound Mirrors". The pioneering duo take Joe South's classic 70s hit "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" and re-work it in the tradition which started with their own "Autumn Leaves" and incorporates Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" amongst others. And, as usual, Coldcut know how to pick a collaborator. Robert Owens should need no introduction. One of the true legends of house music, his career as a musical innovator (as well as the possessor of an all-time great voice) runs from pioneer days as one half of Fingers Inc in Chicago in the 80s right up to collaborations with Photek and London Elektricity, via any number of classic tunes including "Tears", "I'll Be Your Friend" and "Ordinary Son". The version of the tune included on the single ties the epic nature of Coldcut's production to a skipping, swinging house rhythm and the kind of anthemic build that leaves you exhausted. It's a truly beautiful piece of music, the contrast between the delicacy of Owens' voice and the weight of the orchestration perfectly realised. And that's before you've even reached the mixes. Tiga takes the original, strips out the music and replaces it with technoid pulses and a harder dancefloor rhythm, with the sweetness of Owens' voice cutting through the intensity. Henrik Schwarz (of Berlin-based Sonar Kollektiv) builds the original into a melancholy, jazzy number which still sets the foot tapping. Tom Belton goes straight for the disco-funk hands-in-the-air jugular, before Timo Garcia hardens up the kick for a full-on club odyssey.

Review: Taken from Osunalde's amazing new "Aquarian Moonö" album. This is a hot sampler of tracks from the dynamic producer/musician. Recorded live over a 12 day period, this is a stunningly beautiful soundscape, taking house tempos and lushly orchestrating them with strings and divine horn solos to produce a masterpiece.
