Wildfire (5:36)
Tea Cake (5:11)
High (4:17)
Hawthorn (5:59)
Review: Dusky enjoy lofty status in the UK underground after many years of putting out streams of assured deep-house goodness. They have done so on plenty of well-regarded labels and now return to Gerd Jansen's mighty fine Running Back for Life Signs Vol 3. Opener 'Wildfire' is a fizzy one with intense synth lines layered up next to ambient pads and dreamy vocal mutterings that all make for a fine post-rave comedown. 'Tea Cake' also harks back to the 90s with a dusty breakbeat rhythm powered by a fat bassline and twinkling keys. Flipside jam 'High' brings piano energy and 'Hawthorn' has an old school Chicago feel. Dusky cover plenty of ground in good fashion here.

Who Run Tings (5:54)
English Summer (6:52)
Awakenings (club mix) (6:28)
Take Me To The Top (6:38)
Review: Frankfurt producer Shan has enjoyed a long and productive friendship with Running Back Gerd Janson. To date, it has included a swathe of collaborative tracks and remixes, as well as regular solo releases on the label. Shan's latest EP for the imprint is naturally packed with playable material. Saucer-eyed, retro-futurist opener "Who Run Tings", for example, underpins jaunty, Inner City style stabs and piano riffs with corking, hip-house style breakbeats, while "Awakenings" offers a slightly more muscular, big room-friendly take on the turn-of-the-'90s piano house blueprint. Shan deviates further from the script on the Nu Groove style vintage deep house musicality of "English Summer" and deep '80s synth-pop-meets-deep house flex of closer "Take Me To The Top".

Carinacid (6:04)
Review: Astral techno cosmonaut Space Dimension Controller serves up his vision of acid on this new sampler via Gerd Jansen's Running Back. The storied producer kicks off with 'Kosmische Conga' which has twitchy and sinewy lines lashing about over mid-tempo drums. 'Echopet' has a dubby feel and nice undulating grocers that are coloured with a prickly 303 that gently weaves its way in and out. 'Minehead' gets more manic as the 303s are louder, brighter, and more manic in their approach and 'Carinacid' then slows down to heavy drums and a mutant acid house and techno vibe that is full of late night menace.

Review: New to Running Back is the latest record from Raphael Schon, best known for his enduring hit 'Fiesta 2000'; here the Augsburger develops that track's sound with a similarly irreverent set of lub-dubs, six to be exact. Never once skipping a beat (don't panic, palpitators), the likes of 'Baerhit', 'Breathe' and 'Do You Like That' scour the recollective depths of a childhood spent ingesting Italo, house and electro-disco, albeit bringing a modern flair to the mix via warming pad cloaks and janky, intermittent lead synthetic daggers, all to back up the crucial 4x4. Despite its mood of joy, 'Heart Times' was conceived during a very emotionally turbulent time for Schon, owing to its later vocal beltings and emotional groundswells. Danke, Schon.

Review: Eagles & Butterflies has had plenty of notable tunes over the years. No doubt that is why he gets the nod from Gerd Jansen's legendary Running back label to offer up Retropolis Vol 01. It is a four-track EP that shows off the producer's well-realised sounds. The title track is the real standout - 'Retropolis' brings electro-styled synth work with brilliantly future retro euro-disco energy. It's packed with hints of Italo and is sure to light up any club scene. Says the producer of the EP, "Retropolis is the past meets the future. I love influences and technology from the past and making music that sounds like it could be from a time yet to arrive." Mission accomplished.

Review: Back in 1996, Losoul's first outing on the now legendary Playhouse label caused such a stir across Europe and the U.S that it ended up being licensed and reissued - with additional reworks - by labels in Detroit and the Netherlands. This double-pack from Running Back brings together Losoul's original mix - a loopy, is-it-house-or-is-it-techno loop jam that cannily builds in intensity over the course of 11 and a half minutes - and two of the smartest revisions: Theo Parrish's mesmerising, deep and hypnotic revision (one of his best, we'd argue) and Dutch producer Gerd's jazzy, warm and sub-heavy shuffler. Also included is original B-side '00000000', a fine slab of minimal house hypnotism, and the previously unreleased 'D1', a more laidback and stripped-back disco-house loop jam.

Operator Select (America, What Time Is Love?)
Review: Austin based producer Disco Nihilist makes a triumphant return to Running Back, having scored one of our favourite 12"s of last year with Running (Far Away). Two tracks shorter than his debut for Gerd Janson's reliably consistent label, but no less impressive, Moving Forward will captivate many from the moment the elasticated bass line of "House Rent Boogie" launches into action. From here, the track playfully swings from its jack hammering groove into moments of wondrously detuned synth solos. Alongside this, "Beatdown Drums" lays its rhythmic palette thick and hard, practically bruising your cochlea in the process, whilst flipside opener "Film Grain" is an equally intense exercise - though one that matches rasping hi hats with emotion laden keys. The tempo is eased to allow some respite on "Operator Please" a sprawling mass of thick 303 modulations and loose, tumbling drums.

Review: Having dropped digitally a few weeks back via his own Bubbletease Communications label, Maurice Fulton's latest album as Boof has finally landed on wax courtesy of Gerd Janson and Running Back. It's worth picking up, not least because Fulton's musical vision is so vibrant and distinctive. Over two slabs of wax, the Sheffield-based American delivers a swathe of ear-pleasing, off-kilter deep house numbers laden with colourful synthesizer sounds, jazzy electric piano stabs, opaque chords and rubbery bass guitar. There are of course plenty of interesting and oddball diversions to be found throughout (see "Ana's F Is Chillin", the intoxicating and exotic "Japanese Indian Shrimp Curry", and the totle track's kaleidoscopic space jazz), as well as a handful of ultra-percussive peak-time beasts (see "Luam Has Found Her Z").

It came as part of the high energy and highly textured blog house scene but leaned more on electro and made them main stage festival favs who made an entry into the DJ-kicks mix series and plenty of epic tunes. Well now after three years out they return to Running Back - the last label they appeared on in 2020 - for some more raved-up electro bangers.

Review: Described by Running Back boss Gerd Janson as "studies in the transformation of emotional states" and inspired by the music of his youth, Deetron's latest EP is a wholehearted, saucer-eyed riff on music of the rave era, given his usual 21st century twist. He begins in confident fashion with 'Mind Eclipse (TranceHouzz Tool)', cannily manipulating waves of hypnotic electronics and glassy-eyed synthesizer riffs atop a sturdy house beat, before joining the dots between bleep techno, jacking house and vintage Alter Ego on 'HG'. Over on the flip, 'Phoenix' is a locked-in chunk of rolling techno/trance fusion, while 'The Shore (808 Mix)' is a gorgeous exercise in rushing, retro-futurist deep house bliss that will have the hairs on the back of your attention standing to attention.

The Frankfurt man mixes up his usual influences - indie-dance, Italo, power pop and house - into fresh and colourful new sounds. Melody rules OK across these cuts as they take in vocal gems and instrumental beats with lottos joyfulness along the way. 'Somebody' with Dena is a standout and timeless anthem for any dance floor, then 'Resonancer' has a retro-future disco-house vibe and 'Friends' is so perfectly pleasing it cannot fail to make you smile.

Review: Gerd Janson's Running Back seemingly has no borders or boundaries when it come to the sort of music it will put out. Next up is Partiboi69 with Call of The Void, a zippy outing that kicks off with the psychoactive synth swirls and hurried beats of 'Playin'' while 'Bodies' is a sleazy and ghetto-tinged tech pumper with well-treated vocals and big old school piano chords that endlessly stab away. 'Feel This' brings a subtly celebratory mood with splashy cymbals and wispy cosmic pads darting about up top and 'Call Of The Void' shuts down with a deeper house sound but one still lit brightly by the astral pads.

On the first side we have the deep, down and dirty retro house shenanigans of Yungruzt's 'Starlight' (feat Eluize) followed by strobed-out rave energy of Baldo's 'Human Connection'. To take it even further, it's exactly six tracks for the sixth part of the VA-series that is One Swallow Doesn't Make A Summer. Hit men include friends new and old: Llewellyn, Stereocalypse, Zillas On Acid, Storken & Hammer, Ede, SeNor Chugger & Count Van Delicious. The pace is cool and hot at the same time. Rave signals by Ede foil the nouveau disco by Stereocalypse or Storken & Hammer, Llewellyn does a classic house piano hop, Zilles On Acid deliver mid-tempo acid, and last, but not least, SeNor Chugger & Count Van Delicious strike a delicious pose.

'Reuben' is a sprightly slice of 90s-tinted euphoria while 'Midas' tips further towards the bold melodic sensibilities of trance for a proper hands-in-the-air situation. At every turn this EP offers the richest harmonies and rhythm sections you just can't mess with - a truly steadfast, feel-good EP to get a sizeable mass of bodies moving in unison.

Review: Despite coming from the maverick mind of eccentric genius Maurice Fulton, this third Boof full-length was criminally overlooked when it first came out digitally earlier in the year on his own Bubbletease imprint. Major props, then, to Gerd Jansen's Running Back imprint for rescuing it from obscurity and pressing up this CD version. It's in many ways typical of Fulton's work, mixing gorgeous piano flourishes and inventive percussion with distinct electro-jazz, deep house and dub disco influences. It's perhaps more obvious musical than some of his output, but that's a good thing; as an album, it's a far more enjoyable and rewarding listen than, say, his Syclops work. If you missed out first time round, dive in.

Todd Terje - "Snooze 4 Love" (version)
Son Of Sam - "Nature Makes A Mistake" (Jack Plug Supernatural dub)
Review: 2011 was a pretty special year for Gerd Janson's imperious Running Back imprint and they open proceedings on the next annual chapter with two cuts from their digital archives on this killer Digital Dubplates 10". The A Side houses an absolutely sublime version of Todd Terje's "Snooze 4 Luv" from the magnificent Ragysh EP, further exposing the sumptuous horizontal qualities with aplomb. Providing some nice contrast is an equally refined remix of Son of Sam's "Nature Makes A Mistake" from Jack Plug. The reissue of this 1984 industrially charged oddity was our favourite Running Back release of last year, and the chance to grasp a physical copy of Plug's effort (which is superior to the more highly lauded Ame remix) should not be passed up. Running Back also win the prize for first great runout groove inscriptions of 2012.

Review: Fresh from the success of their Salty Days LP, Julis Steinhoff and Just Von Ahlefeld sneak over to Running Back to deliver another master class in delicately poised but righteously pumping deep house. "Nofretete" chugs along at a steady pace, but the interlocked locomotion of the drums and the arpeggios keeps a healthy amount of energy in what is ostensibly a deep cut. "Ninja Restaurant" slips into a more prominent groove, keeping the beat sparse and funky, and the smatterings of synth touches freaky. "In The Jungle" heads into a more jacking refrain, rich and warm in equal measure whilst still tapping into that tripped out mindset that comes with the Smallville set.

Displaying a wide range of influences, it nevertheless offers a typically melodic German take on early Chicago house, electro and disco. Opening with the 80s TV theme styles of "70000 AC" the album moves through the deep electro flex of "Sheldor", the guitar led pop soundscape of "Frontex Slowfox", the slo-mo grooves of "Sandalscene", before finishing with the deep Chi town grooves of "Trainman". Review: The phrase "Gerd Janson does it again" seems to be uttered all too often here at Juno HQ, with his Running Back imprint somehow maintaining a standard of quality that's matched by the lack of fuss Janson makes about it. The latest 12" reeks of Running Back brilliance with finely judged artwork complemented by superb music - courtesy of mysterious producer BDI who was last seen dropping the brilliant "City & Industry" on Rush Hour. Described with typical verve as "Vatican house", this three track release has the erstwhile BDI operating under the Compassion Crew name drawing out three variants on "Paper Tears" with the jangly insouciance of the Tribal Tears Dub perhaps the pick of the lot.

Review: While the recent news from Gerd Janson regarding a decision to slowly peel back on his duties as a music journalist is undoubtedly a blow to the art of composing sentences, it will undoubtedly free up more time for him to focus on ensuring standards at Running Back HQ don't slip. This second 12" off cut from Lauer's recent LP is a clear example of these standards with Runaway and I:Cube employed to sprinkle their own production ideas on the punky chugger "Tentatious". Jacques and Marcos Runaway call shotgun with a heavily percussive and decidedly more energetic rendition than Phillip's original, while I:Cube flexes his synth playing muscles with a Turkish disco pumper of a remix. Heck Lauer even slips in two prime slabs of all new house on the flip - need anymore enticement?

Relatively unknown South African producer Rezkar's superbly spacey single boasts synths that glimmer dreamily over a chunky yet minimal beat, with only the sparsest of bass notes to keep you on the ground. The Mystery Boy edit pads the drums out and rearranges the distinctive melody around them, while John Daly's mix returns to the cosmic vibe of the original by adding a two-note synth line that slowly worms its way into your head.

Colliding Stars (part 2)
Review: Running Back continue to impress in 2011, following crucial releases like the Son Of Sam reissue and the truly odd Hammon Decks twelve with some more swooping cross city house pollination from Marco Passarani. There's a steady, constantly building vibe to "White Dwarf" that proves to be quite consuming; layers of mid tempo percussive bump drawing you in before Passarani introduces subtle acid bubbles and great big dramatic Detroit string flourishes. Watch out for the totally gorgeous drop into synthtastic white light towards the end. On the flip Passarani introduces the darker, more percussive counterpart "Black Dwarf" with only jagged shards of dubbed synths to separate the relentless rhythmic rattle of percussion. This contrasts nicely with mutant house bomb that is "Colliding Stars (Part 2)", an increasingly psychedelic melange of subterranean Italo arpeggios, euphoric keys, searing discoid strings and rasping metallic rhythms.

No Requests (Special Request Fantasy FM mix) (10:26)
Review: Like many producers who grew up in Yorkshire during the early '90s, Paul Woolford has fond memories of Sheffield-based pirate radio station Fantasy FM. As the cover - based on the station's distinctive logo - makes clear, Forever More is little less than a love letter to the rave-era pirate. While the title track sparkles with vintage Italo-house attitude - think bold piano riffs, bouncy grooves and extended solos - it's the accompanying "No Requests (Special Request Fantasy FM Mix)" that really hits home hard. Under the hardcore and jungle influenced Special Request moniker, Woolford delivers a retro-futurist smasher that effortless joins the dots between Yorkshire bleep, early hardcore, and the Belgian rave records that followed. Brilliantly, it also finishes with a two-minute advert for a party in Bridlington, lifted from an old Fantasy FM recording.

Review: Having contributed a stellar track to Gerd Janson's Musik For Autobahns 2 compilation, it's little surprise to see Leon Vynehall pop up on Running Back. Rojus (Designed To Dance) is an expansive affair, with eight tracks stretched across two slabs of wax. It's also predictably varied; contrast, for example, the drowsy ambient chords and twinkling electronics of opener "Beyond This", and the deep-jack-goes-rave sweatiness of "Beau Sovereign". Vynehall also finds space for the Balearic jazz-house swing of "Paradisea", the wall-of-sound Detroit deep house of "Blush", and the African influenced drum workout "...There Is You". In other words, it's a versatile cracker.

Review: Whether operating solo or alongside Gerd Janson as Tuff City Kids, Phillip Lauer's productions have always tended towards the loved-up, glassy-eyed and retro-futurist. "Power" - his first solo album for three years - ripples with giddy references to vintage dance styles of the '80s and '90s, from the synth-heavy Italo-disco revivalism of "Phaser7" and "Mirrors", to the rush-inducing electro positivity of "Direction" and the almost overwhelmingly sun-kissed pulse of Balearic-minded ambient opener "Blissos". While his inspirations are overwhelmingly old-fashioned in nature, the resultant tracks are rarely less than brilliant, with the instrumental synth-pop rush of "Realistic" and muscular, Bobby Orlando-esque sing-along "Power" amongst the many sparkling highlights.

Eating Darkness
Review: When composing his first album since 2018's all-ambient Themes I-XIII, Roman Flugel decided to opt for a more open-minded and eclectic approach. As a result, Eating Darkness touches on many of the stylistic themes that have played a part in his famously lengthy career, while also prioritising the use of modular and analogue synthesis. It's an approach that has paid dividends, with Flugel smartly strutting between evocative IDM ('Magic Briefcase', 'The Best is Yet To Come', the Autechre inspired title track), druggy slo-mo fare ('Chemicals'), new wave throb-jobs ('Wow'), acid-flecked jack-tracks ('Jocks & Freaks;), hypnotic late night minimal techno ('Cluttered Homes'), drowsy downtempo cheeriness ('Locked'), beautiful ambient synth-scapes ('Charles') and revivalist Euro-disco pump ('D.I.S.C.O').

Review: Roman Flugel is back with his seventh full length titled Eating Darkness. The nine tracks were created during the coronavirus lockdown of 2020, and are testament to the Frankfurt legend's penchant for mixing elements of pop with sounds of the underground - a scene he has been affiliated with since the early '90s. A variety of moods and grooves are all delivered in his idiosyncratic style: from the woozy and broken slow burner 'Chemicals', to the majestic and spellbinding dancefloor drama of 'Wow' or the raw hardware acid jack of 'Jocks And Freaks' which harks to his days as Alter Ego. Elsewhere, there's the heartfelt and bittersweet ambient house of 'Cluttered Homes' and the downbeat bliss of closing epic 'Charles'.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record ever so slightly warped with minor split/tear on spine of outer sleeve but otherwise in perfect working condition***

Although Henrik Schwarz has kept himself busy in recent years, it's been a while since he released a full-throttle dancefloor workout. This debut appearance on Gerd Janson's Running Back label - the German producer's first solo single 2013 - is arguably his most forthright and floor-friendly missive since the turn of the decade. "Not Only You" is a thumping techno stomper, where ragged, mutant, repetitive lead lines are propelled forwards by some seriously good drum machine programming. Flipside "Not You Also" offers a slightly more eccentric riff on the same blueprint, with Schwarz adding some eccentric spoken word segments and a couple of bold synth fills.

Review: Thanks to a string of fine disco and gospel-fired releases and remixes for the likes of Midnight Riot and Lumberjacks in Hell, Alan Dixon has become a must-check artist. Here he makes his bow on Running Back with arguably his most arresting and inspired EP to date. The real star of the show is co-producer Darren Morris (a regular Ashley Beedle collaborator), whose dazzling solos surge from the speakers on the driving, 1989 style piano house rush of "Moments" (reminiscent of his work on Beedle's peerless remix of Bent's "Always" in the early 2000s) and the Balearic house brilliance of "Star Dance" (think Phillip Lauer/Tuff City Kids). The fun continues on muscular, Italo-disco influenced opener "La Danza" and the colourful, sunrise-ready soundscape "Ambient Braindisk".

Review: Bella Boo's debut EP on Running Back is a fantastic statement of her style. The Studio Barnhus associate has a refined take on house that is genial and melodic and of course for anyone associated with that crew, playful and with a great sense of its own character. This EP was meant to be a full length with features and collaborations by COVID-19 put paid to that so instead we get a rich eight tracker. Dreamy deep house, skeletal jungle rhythms, funky drum patterns and balmy late night lullabies all make this as varied and vital an EP as you could wish for.

Review: Having recently revived his Utopia Project alias for a surprise new 12" on Running Back, legendary New York deep house producer Rheji Burrell returns to Gerd Janson's label with an EP credited to another one of his Nu Groove era pseudonyms, NY Housin' Authority. "Out Of Body Experience" boasts seven tracks, all of which explore similar sonic pastures to the project's classic, late '80s/early '90s material. That means tactile synthesizer basslines, ear-catching melodies, classic house synth sounds and drum machine beats rich in Burrell's usual infectious swing. Highlights include the breezy and life-affirming jazziness of "3rd Time", the bass-heavy, intergalactic thump of "5th Time" (a cut that would neatly fit into Bleep techno-influenced sets) and the summery warmth of "2nd Time".
