Review: Red Ember Records main man Ewan Jansen may have been serving up dusty deep house and tactile dancefloor workouts since the late 1990s, but he's not released many full-length excursions. In fact, this outing Butter Sessions is his first longform release for nearly 16 years. It's a proper album, too, with the Perth-based producer using the opportunity to experiment with different rhythms, tempos and sounds whilst retaining his usual melodiousness and keen sense of atmosphere. Highlights include, but are in no way limited to, off-kilter opener 'Mussel Hustle', the acid-flecked, early morning dancefloor fever dream 'Kooka', the melodious electro sea breeze of 'Watertable' and the mid-80s Japanese synth-pop/electrofunk eccentricity of 'Proteus vs Yoshimitsu'.

Review: Tusken Raiders is of course Michael Paradinas, the man behind Planet Mu as well as many of his own killer productions. Famously, this alias had to be put to sleep after George Lucas's lawyers found out about it after one of his releases on Clear back in the day, so he renamed himself Rude Ass Tinker - an anagram the original alias. But now it is back out of retirement for this collection on Further Electronix of all the recent EPs he has released. The tracks are built on brilliantly squelchy electro funk, cosmic techno, brain dance melodies abound and the whole thing comes from a world controlled by AI and robots, but never loses sight of the dancefloor.

Review: Freeez founder John Rocca made these cuts between London and New York City from 1982 to 1987. Once Upon A Time in N.Y.C is a pioneering compilation of proto-electro and house cuts that, for this reissue, come on nice splattered orange vinyl. As well as the six standouts on the original abut, there is also a bonus 7" with two extra cuts, one of which is the international hit 'I.O.U.' Elsewhere, jams like 'Englishman In New York', 'I Dub U' and 'I Want It To Be Real' all still bang as brilliantly now as they did almost 40 years ago.

Review: Prins Thomas' recently released album, 8, was undoubtedly one of the most accomplished sets of his long career - an atmospheric, musically intricate affair that drenched his trademark sound in warm sonic sunlight. This partner album, which was recorded at the same time, continues in a similar vein, sashaying between AOR-influenced shuffling dub disco ('Layback Rollout'), intergalactic chuggers ('Earthbound'), morning-fresh Balearica ('Evig Ung'), nods to Tangerine Dream ('Film 0005'), slo-mo chuggers (the "watching the sun come up while suitably saucer eyed" vibes of 'I Love You'), and suitably dubby, spaced-out workouts ('Take Over Fjorden'). Review: The term Afro-house seems to be getting chukka bout ever more freely and ever less responsibly these days. This second volume of Afro Rhythms from Comet France does have some credible and authentic claims on the term though with source material by Afro beat legend Tony Allen amongst others getting some fine remix treatment. Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer go first with an elastic dub, Jeff Sharel layers in more minimal textures to his remix of Brighter Nights and on the flip is a standout from Ed Banger's Krazy Baldhead which is all tin-pot percussion, shuffling broken rhythms and off grid madness.

Review: Fizzing all over the shop like an F1 winner's magnum, Frank Timm celebrates 20 years of Sound Stream with this outstanding slab of uncut floor jams. No messing around, just straight up disco house music. At points plain trippy ("Flash Back"), at others straight up sexy ("Love Remedy", "Get Down") but always unifying and obese in width and weight ("Disco Advisor" especially) Timm has cleared the board right here with the full range. Review: Following a rework of their 1991 hit 'I'm Gonna Love You' on Groove Culture back in April, Italian soul legends Jestofunk get their 1997 album Universal Mother reissued on IRMA. Comprised of northerners Alessandro Staderini, Claudio 'Moz-Art' Rispoli and Farias, they went on to release six albums. All the anthems you probably remember still sound as good on here as they did 24 years ago, such as the disco explosion of 'Be A Warrior' featuring vocals by legend Ce Ce Rogers, the deep down and dirty groove of 'Special Love' with the one and only Jocelyn Brown, to the funky acid jazz joint "If You've Got It, You'll Get It" with percussionist Bill Summers and Fred Wesley on the trombone. Timeless.
