Review: Frank Zappa left a lot of complex musical mysteries for the intrepid explorer to discover, but there's unanimous appreciation for Hot Rats which makes it a great entry point into the maverick's career after his initial rock outfit The Mothers Of Invention disbanded. Released in 1969, it was a more jazz-oriented affair with mostly instrumental pieces that sometimes rocked, sometimes wigged out and sometimes did both in a manner akin to the free jazz pioneers of the era. Sonically, it's out of this world too and now it's repressed on heavyweight wax with a bonus insert to take you into the story behind one of the finest albums in the Zappa canon.

Review: Orison is the latest aural exploration between zake & City of Dawn and a predecessor to their previous orchestral effort, 'A Sorrow Unrequited'. Orison is a prayer or plea to a deity. The archaic origins of the term stem from the Latin language simply meaning to 'speak to God'. Patient and solemn symphonic drifts that foster stillness, boundless thought, introspection, and eternal contemplation.

Review: Scaling Triangles is a curious early 80s DIY oddity, serving up a three-way split between experimental synth-punk outfit Petticoats, the equally motorik coldwave post-punk of Sub Verse, and the Tangerine Dream indebted synth-prog of Sole Sister. All female groups, all overlooked and largely forgotten to time, this 1981 gem captures the sonic and creative expansion that saw the parameters of genres being torn down almost as quickly as they were being established during those formative years; providing a uniquely raw, underground, tangible piece of electronic/post-punk fusion and fearlessness.

Review: Singer, songwriter, former Navy sailor and Oklahoma native Zach Bryan first rose to fame in 2019 with his self-released debut country album DeAnn. Bryan's raw storytelling approach attracted a dedicated following, justifying many follow-ups - his latest EP Summertime Blues included. Something of a sibling piece to the recent album American Heartbreak, the EP deploys sweet vocal lilts, banjo strums and fiddle bowings to channels many brooding, blue-collar emotions, reflecting lives lived on the road and bittersweet days gone by.

Review: Dave 'Joey Negro' Lee's Z Record imprint hit the compilation gold mine once again, calling on the curatorial skills of Dave Hill, former Ballistic Brother and founder of the iconic Nuphonic label, to flex his latter day Gospel expertise for the superb Overdose Of The Holy Ghost. This double LP collection sees Hill chart Gospel music through it's 70s and 80s period as the influences of nascent disco and boogie bore fruit. The chance to own the absolutely belting cover version of Sylvester's "I Need You" by Ricky Womack & Christian Essence in edited Joey Negro format will mean instant purchase for many current disc jockeys, but there is plenty more spiritually enlightened disco heat around it. Essential release!

Review: Hit makers Rodgers and Edwards' mammothly influential Chic songs enjoy one of the finest curatorial salutes from UK disco's most discerning torch-bearer/creator Dave Lee. Digging deep into his vaults and unearthing some of the best homages, references and blatant covers, Negro join the dots and delivers some rarities you may have never heard before. Get lost in the music of She's shiny guitar strumming "Easy Money", freak out to Charanga 76's "Good Times" and get lucky with Van Jones's "Not About That"... Everyone knows about the hits and influence, most of us know how important a role Chic played in sample culture but Negro has gone the extra mile to celebrate some of the lesser known references Chic have had over the years. Freaking great.

Review: DJ, curator and producer Dave Lee (fka. Joey Negro) continues to celebrate his 30-odd year long career in music with his second curatorital comp release. The 'Produced With Love' series charts all of Lee's original productions in soulful house and disco, and this second edition includes choices songs by the likes of Destiny II, Leroy Burgess and Andreya Triana. Always collaborative and with effortless attention to funking detail, Lee brings it once again.

Review: Colin Curtis returns with another finely-curated selection of the best 'Jazz Dance Fusion' records he could find. In Curtis' own words, Volume 4 reflects a combination of new music, unreleased music, and tracks that have never been on vinyl before or have not attained the recognition they deserve. A whopping 26 tracks are racked up on the digital edition, but this special vinyl record yields just thirteen further selections from that initial batch; leading the charge is the Rhodesy, hi-hatty '46 To Somewhere' by the Sultan's Swing, capturing the free-spiritedness of hitching a ride to somewhere untrammeled. Further choice sonic infections, infusing elements of vocal jazz, salsa and Latin spoken word, include Somos Amigos' 'Pa'gozar' and GeeW's 'Kyoto'. Get grooving!

Review: The Jazz Dance Fusion series is a compilation-based series collecting some of the finest songs in the Jazzdance, Latin Jazz and Fusion. Each volume is careful cultivated by the well-known British DJ Colin Curtis. After the first three successful editions, the fourth boasts tracks like 'Mother Of The Future" by Venus Dodson, 'I Face East' by Mary Greer Mudiku and 'Ponteio' by Miho Nobuzane, to name but a few. Volume Four Part 2 is spread across two pieces of vinyl housed in a beautiful gatefold vinyl. If you are a jazz fan looking for a compilation to expand your knowledge and love the style, then look no further than this one here! Thanks ro Colin Curtis for continuing to curate such a great series!

Review: Vultures, Kanye West's collaborative effort with Ty Dolla $ign, arrives amid a tumultuous period for the legendary rapper and despite controversies surrounding his personal life and erratic behavior, the album shows a surprising completeness. The production is polished, showcasing West's improved technical precision as a rapper. The writing is on point, with creative versus found throughout the album. The beats are mesmerising and varied and the album overall feels cohesive and accomplished. Vultures present a competent and well-crafted offering, leaving fans satisfied while gaining new fans too.

Review: German scientist Current Value elevates his 14th studio album to wax status and the world is a better place. Rolling out over two heavyweight 12"s, this particular body of work explores the relationship between drum & bass and techno in a whole rainbow of interesting and uncompromising ways. From the pummelling non-stop 4x4s of 'Greed' to the glitchy, rising frequencies and twisted emotions of the title track, each cut takes a snapshot or a pinch of ingredients, inspects them on a microscopic level and turns them inside out. Elsewhere cuts like 'TNM' melt your face off with thundering beats and momentous energy while other tracks such as 'Deep Mind' go straight for the cranial sensation and fry your brain within seconds. An exceptional exploration. No one does it like Current Value.

Review: Yuku come correct with this special blue vinyl remix 12". Two vibes per side, both Traka and Granul go under the knife. On one side we have Serbian crew Traka under scrutiny as Commodo flips 'Yosai' into a menacing slab of tension while Muqata takes the Killa P-fronted 'Start Taking Note' into a brutalist sonic rainbow. Flip for two remixes of Turkish maverick Granul; Jtamul turns two-step inside out with stacks of eerie space on 'Deformity' while Iskeletor turns 'Interconnected' into the twisted, halftime heaver of your dreams. Stark sermons!

Review: Roger Gerressen's previous album, 2017's Sushitech-released "Monoaware", did a fine job in delivering atmospheric slabs of dancefloor hypnotism that were variously inspired by tech-house, dub techno and the deeper end of the European techno sound. "Heading In A Backwards Direction" feels like a more open and expansive take on the same basic blueprint, with Gerressen quietly slipping between beat-free dub techno soundscapes (blissful opener "Fragil (Dub)"), sun-kissed tech-house/dub techno fusion (the ear-pleasing "Draxis"), deep house inspired dancefloor warmth ("Cerendipity"), heavier peak-time workouts (bass-heavy tech-house jack track "Don't Be Neutron"), crackling minimalism ("Continued Momentum") and hushed, sub-heavy goodness (closing cut "Holding Thoughts"). It all adds up to another impressively atmospheric excursion.

Review: Perennially indie-dance favs Primal Scream might be best known for albums like the seminal Screamadelica but did you know they wrote an album that never was? Reverberations (Travelling In Time)' is just that - a debut that wasn't a debut. It lasts just 35 minutes but has 16 perfectly formed pop tunes on it, 11 of them previously unreleased BBC session recordings, and the final five are tunes from their earliest singles on Creation Records. Here the record is pressed up on translucent blue vinyl in limited quantities and includes newly commissioned artwork and a large format booklet with extra context.

Review: You are sure to have your favourite Primal Scream tracks but did you know there was a whole selection of them recorded early on that never ended up getting realised as once intended. Well now you can get your hands on them in an array of CD and vinyl forms. This is a limited gatefold version of Reverberations (Travelling In Time) which has 16 perfectly formed pop nuggets. Five of the tunes are from singles released early in their careers and the other 11 tunes are previously unreleased BBC session recordings that all perfectly captures what many believe to be a crucial era for one of the UK's most important groups.

Review: Public Castration Is A Good Idea is one of the rare instances of a bootleg instantly becoming part of a band's canon. As Michael Gira's Swans grew in stature on the outer edges of industrial rock through the 80s, their reputation as an incendiary live act rose in tandem. Some Bizarre gave their blessing to this recording which wound up as the first Swans live album, captured in the UK in 1986 in the wake of the Greed and Holy Money tours. It's a forbidding listen, as you might well expect - all clanking metal, barbed noise and Gira's troubled invocations - and it takes you right to the heart of the band in this formative era.

Journals, stories, and songs span the years 1981 to present. Includes visual archives and artwork dating back to 1974.

"From the Preface to The Knot: This book contains the words to every song I've written worth collecting to date from all my musical projects throughout the years. I've left out various imbecilities and feckless half-starts. Also included in this book are several previously published short stories. They're taken from the collections The Consumer and The Egg, as well as a few other hand- made limited editions of stories. In a few cases I've included excerpts rather than the entire story. This was done for aesthetic purposes, with the overall feel of this current volume in mind. There are a great many journal entries in this book. For the most part they are also, emphatically fiction. They're from an ongoing journal, not a diary. My journals are where I often allow a disembodied, fictional 1st person narrator to take over and unspool imagined events, diatribes, impossible scenarios, psychic auto-cannibalisms, and corrosive or ecstatic dreams etc. Again, these are fiction. Certain things I've written about (in fiction and in song form) seem to exist beneath the surface (in myself and others) and I find them compelling to look at and to describe. I view this as a positive act. In acknowledgment of the constricting and microscopically judgmental and censorious times we live in, the usual authorial caveats apply here. Certainly there are many purely anecdotal journal entries included in this book as well, and my presumption is that an intelligent reader would be able to differentiate one from the other. Personally, I'm very suspicious of memory (especially my own), so I can't definitively vouch for the veracity of the recounting of the literal events herein either. I have also excised material that I felt too personal to include, out of respect for the people involved as well as for myself. There are several large gaps in the journal entries over the years. This is due to lost journals of the time, and in one case a lost laptop (which, painfully, contained a great deal of writing). There are also periods where I didn't keep a journal and didn't write fiction. In any event, I've tried to include fiction and journal entries that correspond roughly to the period before and after a musical album's release and the words that were written for that music. The end section of this book consists of recently unearthed visual documents and imagery and functions here as an incidental archive. The images span the years from 1974 to the present."
